Glad to see your take on this! It's a great updated toolset, but I wished they paired the package opener with a thicker combo tool so you wouldn't lose the can opening function.
I agree with you on the file. That is an important tool I've always looked for in their knives. I find it very useful, not only for annoying jagged edges that appear on my fingernails at very inconvenient times, but also for burrs I encounter on various materials.
A file needs to be offered on more of their knives, especially the metal file. The inclusion of a file is usually what determines which SAK model I buy. Thinner, medium sized models with a metal file is something that is missing. It used to be offered on the Automobile/Motorist models, arguably the best SAK model.
Heck yeah! Great look at this tool and toolset; it’s great to see a video from you again. I’m a woman, I’ve had one for months, and I’ve tested the package opener on a TON of stuff, and it works great. Love the serrated part for those thick plastic ties that hold some things into the packaging. Love the 2d Phillips which is perfect for so many things (but obviously not everything). Love the nail file - this whole toolset just reeks with practicality (let’s just not talk about the hook and corkscrew). This has not replaced my usual EDC SAK, but I think for many people it could be all they need.
Great addition to the toolset. Hopefully the special editions are just here to create some buzz, and we’ll see this on regular models (at regular prices.)
I am a female and added a straight pin to my NY Style Companion. I have this exact same model/color. The other colors were too gaudy looking. I hate pink. And yes I use the SAK nail file with the nail pick all the time, which is why I bought a SAK Cadet and the SAK Sportsman too. I also have a SD Classic but don't like the other style of the nail files. I prefer the serrated grooves on the nail file.
I love your content dude. Been a fan for a while, glad to see you back. Beautiful knife. Really nice functionality and didn’t know about it till your video. Cheers!
I literally sent them an almost identical design through their product idea submission page about two years ago and never heard back. I'm sure I wasn't the only person to think of this idea, but damn that makes me wonder.
I wish they made the bottle opener the combo bottle opener/can opener like with the Compact. They could probably make it as thick as the Companions, but with the extra functionality. Especially since theyre removing the dedicated can opening tool.
Got one and it might actually be my perfect SAK - nothing I would change! The New York scales also make it look more modern and less ‘tooly’ so nobody bats an eyelid even you pull out a knife in the office!
The package opener with the combo tool. Of course, I've used a combo tool to rip tape and score cardboard for over a decade when the Compact and Waiter became my go-tos for EDC (leaving the house today, or working from home).
I want that package opener, and I like the tool set over all. However, I hate the patterned scales, and it’s way too expensive because of the lanyard and plus scales/pen. If they offer it with solid color scales I may buy it, especially if they offer it with standard scales at a lower price.
Another great no bs review. I do wonder why they don't put that eyeglass driver in all corkscrews but overall like this tool. I do like the package opener on my Wingman. That is another tool I would like to see more broadly. The Victorinox version does look at least as good. Thanks for the review.
100% , they should offer all their tools with a choice of can opener or that package opener, I would swap my ranger for the package opener version. Cheers
Woulda thought it being a NY style tool they’d remove the blades all together or just had the tiny pen blade. Ive heard its super easy to get a weapons charge over there but correct me if im wrong on that
I'd love to see the standard can opener/bottle opener scale replaced with the combo tool (flathead, can/bottle opener) and the box cutter on some models! I would absolutely love a Ranger with that
What do you think of the Roxon Flex modular multitool? I went ahead and preordered one. Looks pretty promising. I wish they had a premium steel blade option right away, but I’m sure that’ll be a priority in the near future.
@@txtoolcrib I don’t think its realistic to compare it to the Surge or Swisstool in terms of robustness, but if all goes well it could seriously contend with the spirit series, the wave and so on as a mid size light-medium duty edc.
I think the companion is now around long enough. Next step should be to use this package opener in mainstream 91mm models. The Tinker would be ideal. Many guys find it more modern than the Spartan because the cork srew is replaced by a phillips. Vic can modernize it even more by using the combo tool of the compact instead of the bottle opener and this package toll instead of the can opener. Just change it, name remains Tinker. Price should also not increase much.
I dunno - this model and its approach (as well as a few other bladed options) from Victorinox worry me. Just feels like they are finding ways to release 'specials' at double the price of their original product lines. Kind of points to a company resting on their cache than actually really evolve products. IE they're on their way to becoming a fashion brand... I don't know why they didn't use the can/bottle top combo tool as well as the package opener or simply modify either the bottle cap or can tool just slightly to also act as a package opener. Like just a sharpened V towards the tip of the cap lifter...
Im considering to get one of these just to gut it and put the nail tool and the package opener in my Cybertool M as I dont use the can opener nor the small blade
Great video! Seems like a strange combination of implements to me for a city dweller's tool set. Of course, this can very from person to person, but I'd lose the corkscrew and awl and put in a decent screwdriver with a Phillips.
Probably more useful than the Evo 18 which has a similar tool set and costs a similar amount. Companion (91mm, pen, pin, package opener, hook, corkscrew) vs. Evo S18 (85mm, saw, locking blade, can opener, back layer Phillips)?
I use the package opener on the Leatherman wingman a lot. Really great for clamshell packaging amongst other things. Having said that, it's cheaper than this New York SAK.
I, too, have found that the Victorinox can opener doesn't work as well for me as the Leatherman. I personally use my can opener all the time but I can understand why many people think it is obsolete.
I have "saved the day" on multiple occasions including my sister's wedding by having a can opener. I might not use the can opener every day but it's one of those tools I don't mind being included because when I do need it, I'm super glad I have it.
If Victorinox just made all the different 91mm two layer knives variations they'd be printing money 💰 🤑 I know they know this because they're charging twice as much for a compact as any 3 layer
IF they replaced the Cap Lifter/FlatHead/Wire stripper with the Combo Tool (that the Compact SAK has) you would have all of the benefit of the Cap Lifter/FlatHead/Wire Stripper AND an able Can Opener as well. I agree that it is ridiculous that they didn't provide a straight pin or the mini screw driver in the cork screw on an $80 knife. Straight pins are virtually free and almost everyone I know who is an SAK fan usually uses the tip of the tweezers for the same sized screws the mini screw driver works with, so we replace that in the Cork Screw with Helix Tinder and replace the toothpick with a Firefly mini Ferro rod for greater utility. I really hope to see the new Box Cutter on the Ranger and/or Hunstman paired with the Combo Tool.
should have demoed the serrated part of the box opener also. it works great also for all kinds if things. everybody whined over a year ago when they saw the look and I was saying wait to use it and then judge it and now everyone loves it because it works so good and so what that it looks weird. the Victorinox can opener looked weird when it came out in 1952 and we all got use to that and we we all get use to the box opener. It just works and I knew it would because they are engineering genius's at Victorinox
Wow... I love tools specifically designed to destroy annoying packages. The only thing still missing is a very sharp (carbide?) cutter with hard-limited depth that can just destroy upper layer of duct tape and nothing else. TBH i sometimes waant a multitool designed just for packages, that has ALL the things just for that and nothing else.
The bottle opener should have been sacrificed rather than the can opener. You can easily open a bottle without a bottle opener but not easy opening a can without a can opener
@@MrLlama999 That's fair enough. You will get people who use the bottle opener a lot more than the can opener. But in emergency situations, which the Swiss Army Knife was originally developed for, the can opener is a much more valuable tool than a bottle opener
I love Victorinox but they're resting on their laurels, regarding tools, which made them Victorinox in the first place. I'm a watch geek and in my opinion, the watch department of Victorinox is excelling, they're constantly releasing new materials, models and very very interesting accessories. They look like 2 complete different companies.
These sell themselves though price is excessive. Women pay more for stuff - haircut, razors etc. So Victorinox strategy is sound sadly. Will be interesting to see the box cutter on red version down the line.
I almost unsubbed when I saw the black and yellow but then you redeemed yourself by destroying the packaging and bringing out the red ... I guess I'll let that one slide then ...😂
1) I know it's just aesthetics, but ye gods these offerings are ugly, can I have basic red scales please Victorinox. 2) seems like you're paying a lot for junk most people are not going to use with that weird lanyard thing 3) it amuses me that in any of the cities these colorways are named for, carrying this knife would get you arrested I like the knife itself just fine but put red plus scales on it and I don't need all that silly stuff.
Thanks for the update but I can't get over the fact Victorinox strayed from it's loyal fan base in order to be woke and try to appeal to a more 'feminine' fan base and to those who wouldn't buy SAK's. They also assume that every WOMAN is sitting around opening packages and doing their nails all day. That is the undisputed reason (written in the description) as to why they did away with the pen knife and put in the nail cleaner and file. Don't get me WRONG here, this would be a great addition IF they were re-vamping and putting out other NEW models which they are not. They have haven't released a new standard 91mm into production for years and the 1st hint of a new model is this WOKE design. Why not in the standard red or other standard colours? WHY, because they tell they want to appeal to a different market than the SAK collectors and EDC enthusiast. AS much as want to try out the box cutter and combination of tools, I refuse to buy this series. STRAIGHT FROM THE WEBSITE since I know the ignorant can't read or won't take the time to read: In a choice of three fresh styles to express your FEMININE side; The Companion from the Live to Explore collection comes in three fresh looks for every modern WOMAN and features a handy tool combo to simplify daily tasks.
I feel like I'm losing my mind. Have people been to a store? Half of canned foods still don't have pull tabs. To call the can opener obsolete is just ignorant. Also a package opener only does one thing, and that one thing can be done by a knife. A knife can do a billion things including open packages. I really don't understand why people want such a tool.
Woke victorinox marketing this as specific for woman is BS. Same as the price. Hope this comes in a regular edition soon with decent pricetag cause I want one.Now I just have to explain to my GF why she has to give me back my old compact since victorinox now has a knife just for her.
Victorinox are certainly not keeping up with the times. After many years of being a fan of victorinox, i will say that there are far better tools coming out of new kids on the block like roxon and nextool. Victorinox haven't brought a new tool out in years barring this pathetic upgrade to an already existing knife/ tool
Glad to see your take on this! It's a great updated toolset, but I wished they paired the package opener with a thicker combo tool so you wouldn't lose the can opening function.
That style of can opener sucks. Losing that functionality is not that big of a deal.
My thought exactly ! A thicker combo tool would have been perfect to complete the toolset !

That new box/clam shell cutter will get much more use during every day applications than the can opener. Wise decision on Victorinox’s part.
I definitely agree

Probably more useful than the Evo 18 which has a similar tool set and costs a similar amount. Companion (91mm, pen, pin, package opener, hook, corkscrew) vs. Evo S18 (85mm, saw, locking blade, can opener, back layer Phillips)?
I feel conflicted about this. It's almost like a regular Climber, but 2 tools and the scales changed. For how much? Exactly...
$74 plus tax right now
