Having spent more time working in the office than with my hands at this point in my life, this would cover 99% of my problems: One blade, thin stock, flat grind Scissors Combination small flat screwdriver/can/bottle opener Large screwdriver with chisel grind nail file 3D Phillips driver The tiny little pliers like on the Deluxe Tinker/Swisschamp is optional but would be tottally worth it for me Most of what I use a tool for in an office is opening things, tightening screws on risers and chairs and equipment, and occassionally I have to bend a thick staple or bend something back into shape. The occasional office party requires mixing some punch or something and no one but me ever has a can opener, so that tool is worth carrying. Every once in a while, our building is shut down. There could come the occassion I have to walk a few miles if we're ever evacuated and it's not safe to go back to our cars, my only recourse may be what I have in my pockets, so it doesn't hurt my feelings any to carry a SAK. I often need a small light (lights on sensors don't always trip, or have go navigate to car in the dark sometimes) I would also say a pen, but I need paper so I just carry those together. And once or twice I've needed a match, but I'm not going so far as to add a lighter just not frequent enough. I could take a package opener, sometimes clam packs of supplies are a PITA Now this is me being honest about what I need, I usually have more tools than I could possibly need at work in my backpack. Though there was that one time I had to put a canopy together (company picnic) and those tools came in handy.
In an urban setting I would want 3 areas covered: - basic nailcare stuff (scissors, nailfile, nailcleaner - no, a "cuticle pusher" is not needed) - tools for paperwork (scissors, pen and a tool to open packages/letters with) - very basic screwdriving capabilities (maybe No.1 Phillips and No.1 flathead for most electronic devices) If I worked at Victorinox I'd look around in the company office and look for further office tools that could maybe be implemented in a new SAK. I don't know, maybe a small ruler engraved on the edges of the scales (one side metric, the other imperial) would be a good start. By the way what I described is almost exactly what the Manager had to offer (minus the ruler). Yes, the one Victorinox discontinued. Good job, guys...
I want to make a 58mm with a pair of scissors on one side and the ruler/2.5mm SD and nail file/nail cleaner on the other. No blade but I would add a lanyard with the Quattro screwdriver. I know people will ask about the combo tool but I wouldn’t need it with a Waiter.
Honestly, I like the Felix Immler modification of dremeling the underside of the can opener into a hook knife. Now all my SAKs have a package opener/box cutter. Victorinox should just redesign the can opener with this modification from the factory.
I absolutely love my alox electrician for urban pocket carry it’s very friendly looking and useful. Same with tinker and my rambler which is also great. I really want to pick up a alox with a saw. At work having something to cut a little drywall, wood or a root or branch real quick would be really useful. Keep up the great videos!
In recent years I have found the corkscrew very useful for holding the micro flathead which i use frequently for my glasses. Back when my eye were younger I went with the philips.
A Cadet X Alox with the new package opener/screwdriver instead of the can opener would be my preferred urban EDC, but i doubt if this would be good for business for Victorinox.
My urban carry and daily carry is the Rambler. As for the new opener tool, I totally agree the classic opener layer should be replaced by the new opener and combo opener tool (making the combo tool a little sturdier).
One day Victorinox will offer the choice of a factory made custom build. Alternatively they could offer a build your own option to buy all the bits and build your own at home. Now that could be fun.
I don't think they will ever do this because it gives too much power to the consumer. The way things are now they can leverage limited edition models, they can pair new tools that are desirable with tools that are not desirable so that you have to buy multiple.
My dream list: 1. Victorinox Compact with all the bottom tools gone. For me, I don't give a crap about the bottom tools of the Compact. 2. An 84 version of the Rambler. 3. Powerpint but where the side tools aren't crap but are as good as Victorinox peripherals. Powerpint has crap side-tools. 4. Gerber Dime or Pint PS4 made with magnacut 5. Juice S2 back in stock 6. Alox Bantam X - basically a Bantam but with scissors. Nothing else. 7. Gerber Slim Drive but where the screwdriver ACTUALLY locks. 8. The concept of the Milwaukee 6 in 1 with bit driver but made by Big Idea Design to look more sleek.
For an urban carry, I think the Compact is unbeatable, but if you don't wear glasses the backside Philips is an option Vic should keep in the catalog. Sure, there are minor tweeks that could be made, like opening up the fourth slot for a "just in case" Firefly ferro rod and a second pin hole on the scales, but that's minutae and slightly paranoid. But when I'm working from home and wearing sweats, honestly I carry a waiter with a glasses driver on the corkscrew.
I made a custom 2 layer 91mm with scissors and file/bottle opener driver. Phillips and parcel hook on the back and plus scales with the Toothpick Swapped out for a fire still 🔥 I didn't include a blade because I carry a primary blade. Thanks for the videos tool crib 👍
Nice video 😊👍🏻 My ideal urban carry knife would be a Pioneer X but instead of the can and bottle openers, the 4-in-1 tool (same as on the Compact) and a long Philipps screwdriver. The reasons for that are: 1) I would use the 4-in-1 as a 2-in-1 (flat screwdriver and bottle opener), 2) the long Philipps screwdriver would be way more efficient than the usual one. I have no idea whether this combination is technically possible with 3 layers or not, but I assume yes; in this case you would have a more versatile Pioneer X without more bulk. Oh and make an external side of the scissors or the 4-in-1 a nail file, and 100% my urban needs are covered 🤗
Personally I think the Companion is almost the perfect urban carry knife. I carry a Swiss tool because the metal file works well as a nail file for hogging material off my nails. I don’t love the scales but that’s easily changeable. I personally use the corkscrew way more than a Phillips though. If for nothing else holding the eye glass screwdriver though I’ve used the corkscrew a fair bit too.
The thing at one time with SAK with two blades the small blade handles general cutting jobs and the big blade was saved for food. The screw driver on the can opener will handle Phillips in a pinch.
As a small urban SAK why not go a stage smaller in the Recruit or Tourist 84mm . With a small mod on the can opener (improving can opener, and giving a good 2d Phillips /small flat with good reach ) the Tourist is all i ever need , never miss the scissors. For even more simplicity the Recruit will cover almost all .
Hard to come up with the perfect mix of tools/form/function etc, but I do know that I'd LOVE there to be more models with the new package opener, and also with the nail file/cleaner (also works as small phillips). And call me crazy, but I'd love more models to NOT have a 'main' blade (something like the Electrician's little blade will suffice).
The only SAK tools I have used in an office/urban environment are 1. Small pen knife to sharpen pencils, 2. Large Knife to cut fruit, 3, Scissors to cut paper 4. Tooth Pick 5. Tweezers...anything else is not used or sparsely used. The only other tool that I would find useful which I carry separately is a nail clipper with its own nail file.
I’m a big fan of axial tools instead of T tools. How about a Yeoman variant but with the new package tool instead of the magnifying glass? Most folks use their phones these days as a magnifier.
I think the tinker is about "perfect" for my urban carry. I think victorinox should put the nail file on the parcel hook (since the parcel hook is needed in this era.....) for SAKs that do not have a dedicated nail cleaner/file. When I am carrying the tinker I use the awl if I need to clean my nails. Having the driver instead of the cork screw is probably best in my opinion. If you need a cork screw you probably have plans going on so you can switch your knife for an occasion.
I carry a classic in a small leather pouch around my neck and a swisstool on my hip. Still think the Swisstool is the best multitool ever created and the classic is just so useful in i tiny package.
I like your ideas Ben. I'd like to further expand on the celidor version. Let's ditch the celidor for g10, it's high time, also upgrade the blade to either 154CM or 14C28N. I'd rather have the reamer in place of the fingernail file and swap out the awl / corkscrew for a new tool similar to the cybertool's driver just on the backside. Living in Canada now and having to do home repairs I often find myself needing 3 separate screwdrivers since Robinson has been added to the mix up here, I want that versatility.
14C28N in the blades makes sense, as long as price stays in line. Current steel can get screaming sharp and touches up easily. I use it as a backup to a dedicated folder (usually a crucarta pm2 or stretch) when I want a precise cutting task done. I really like the geometry of the small blade for this reason.
the Cadet is more suited for the box opener and the combo tool than 93mm Alox stuff because it's a lighter duty knife than 93 mm Alox knives. The box opener won't probably get put on other knives for a long while. The Companion is made to be unique, kind of like how the Compact is unique. Should see regular production Companion's next year and probably around the $40-ish price point on Amazon. I want a 93mm Alox Voyageur to go regular production. People thought the Pioneer X would never happen and it became so popular that Victorinox decided to make it. An Alox 93mm Voyageur would hurt the sales of Compact's and Pioneer X's and probably won't ever happen
I think the package opener should be included in all 2 and 3 layer SAKS- sissors are a requirement for me in any model. I prefer 3 layer 91mm. I can see an argument for the phillips or the corkscrew, because of what the corkscrew can hold
I do not understand the excitement for the package opener whatsoever. The package opener can only do one thing and that one thing can be done by the knife blade or the saw or the small knife blade, it's easily replaceable. The other factor is, where are you most likely to need to open a package? If you have a package you're probably at home, where you have thousands of things that could open the damn package. Really stupid tool.
My Companion just came in. I will be adding a Cybertool layer for driving screws. It will be the same width and weight as a Ranger. The Ranger is king for outdoor adventures. The Cyber Companion for urban adventures.
I love my Companion (NY Style). Right now I'm carrying my SAK Cadet in my bag because its so lightweight and unobtrusive. I love my SAK Compact so much, I don't carry it very much because I'm scared of losing it, along with my Companion. I also love my SAK Pioneer X because of its elegance. I carry a separate pen. My SAK Sportsman would be perfect if it had a scissors because its small and isn't expensive like the Alox, Compact and Companion. I got my Sportsman for $30 and would gladly get rid of the can opener for the scissors, or better yet, get rid of the corkscrew for a small sized scissor like whats on the Classic SD.
Add the magnifying glass and phillips from the explorer to the companion and it's perfect to me. That or add the file/metal saw to the explorer and go 5 layers.

They should have added a pocket clip years ago, like Boker. Leatherman T4 has a pocket clip and locking tools. SAK is coasting on nostalgia and public ignorance of alternatives.

I know what you mean, I use that blade more than the main blade, it's perfect for controlled cuts which you need when opening packaging. It gets gunked up so I keep my main blade clean for cutting fruit etc.
You're saying that we shouldn't use new tools designed to specific tasks, so we should use just stones and sticks to be true man, or are you saying that people with less confidence with a knife probably are married to a man and shouldn't be allowed to open packages? In any case you're just being a prick, not all people are the tactical commando guy with 3 knifes in their EDC, just let we have a easier way around problems
Who is being a prick ? You have your opinion and I can have mine. Everything on a multi tool is a compromise and space is limited. If packages can be easily opened by a small knife then I do not want a dedicated package opener.
If you can use a small blade just use the big one, or use your tooth and nails like a true man. And if I say that IN MY OPINION you were a prick it is ok? Lol, what the husband thing have to do with space saving in a tool, grow a pair and own what you said If you don't like the tool just don't buy it

Victorinox could gear any of their models to women with custom color/pattern scales. In this lineup, the Paris model is pink and the Sydney model is mostly purple. Ben is going with the option least likely to get him teased by the guys at the shop.

Why do Swiss Army knives have bottle openers? Every modern bottle has a twist top…
You must not be from Texas: Topo Chico, Mexican cokes, Shiner.
If people have trouble opening packages with the small pen blade on SAK, they should just let their husbands do it.
I know what you mean, I use that blade more than the main blade, it's perfect for controlled cuts which you need when opening packaging. It gets gunked up so I keep my main blade clean for cutting fruit etc.
Amen, that pen knife is super sharp and thin, perfect for opening packages, easy to reshape as well.
Lol, what the husband thing have to do with space saving in a tool, grow a pair and own what you said
If you don't like the tool just don't buy it
Rip buddy you had a great channel

@@NaturalSynthetic777 My old college roommate knows his family. I guess he died in a bad truck accident.
Really sucks. His channel was one of the best
@@thisfishsmellsgood4084 damn dude, so many people die to road accidents. Sad
@@thisfishsmellsgood4084 I’m not sure who your friend is, but this is his wife and he is indeed NOT dead. He has been very busy with his business. He is working on his next video as we speak.
@@NaturalSynthetic777no. He is not. This is his wife. He is alive and well.
Y'all know that new swiss army knives line are for women, right?! 😂
I know they are geared towards women, but I don’t care. My interest is solely in the tools themselves.
Victorinox could gear any of their models to women with custom color/pattern scales. In this lineup, the Paris model is pink and the Sydney model is mostly purple. Ben is going with the option least likely to get him teased by the guys at the shop.
