- 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander SEL. 2.4L 4cylinder engine. SWAC. 40mm strut spacer lift, 29” tall all terrain tires. Vs 1999 Toyota Land Cruiser, torsion bar front lift/level. 33” flaken wildpeak AT tires, full underbody skid plates. Center diff locker, rear locker, and front locker. Operated during this video either entirely unlocked or entirely locked. Mitsubishi was operated this entire video in lock mode, traction control on, tires aired down to 17psi. Land cruiser has no additional electronic traction adds and ran tires at street pressure, approximately 35psi.
No surprise, Mitsubishi built the best rally car (Lancer), and best off-road SUV (Pajero) in its time. It's still my favorite japanese car company, Too bad, they went almost bankrupt because its US dealers were mostly crooks with zero customer care.
Actually for a company that is only relying on internet marketing and royal mitsubishi followers, they are doing quite well.

No issues as of yet. 117,000 miles on it so far. Bought it brand new.
Limitation... there’s lots of limitations to any AWD vehicle. Especially with a CVT transmission. All the general concerns to off roading a AWD vehicle with a CVT transmission also apply to this vehicle. To have to be careful not to over heat your transmission. You can’t push it to hard. You can’t do slow speed steep crawling. But if you no how to drive what you got you can do a lot. You just have to maintain momentum and don’t push it past what it’s capable of doing. You have to no when to stop.

@@DoubtingThomas333 that’s awesome! Unfortunately in America there is no diesel option currently. And only the the V6 versions come with a regular non-CVT automatic transmission. But you can only get a V6 in the top of the line GT trim. It’s not available in any other trim levels.
@@jklpino what does America have against Diesel vehicles? They tried to convert you guys in the 70s and 80s for the fuel economy side of things but they never took off... Seems rare for diesel options to even be offered over there except for the usual trucks everyone loves.
@@DoubtingThomas333 it’s mostly due to American culture, misconception, cost, and emissions. Gas engines have been the thing for so long in America it’s just something most Americans prefer.
Most Americans also think diesels are slow, dirty engines.
The initial purchasing price of a Diesel engine option vehicle is higher, also the cost of maintenance and repairs is higher.
And emissions, diesels produce high amounts of Nox emissions, and the systems they’ve put in place to reduce emissions over all in diesels in America is costly and problematic.
So even though diesels are far more efficient engines, there’s several reasons why they’re not popular in America. Atleast in cars and SUV’s.

Great video. I was told that an Outlander Sport can keep up with a Tacoma/4 Runner off road you just have to take it easier than you would in a Tacoma or 4 Runner. Your video seems to prove that. Thanks.

Well I hate to say it. But honestly there’s no way in heck a outlander sport could keep up with a Tacoma/4Runner in all conditions. I’ll tell you where the outlander will keep up or out perform a true 4x4.
Any slippery or off camber situation where it’s not a steep crawl. The outlanders AWD system will walking right through it for the most part, if the Toyota does NOT have there traction control aids or lockers it will easily out do it. Anything that’s real steep or needs a lot more ground clearance a real 4x4 with a low range will for the most part easily out do the outlander. Especially if there’s big ruts or steeps that require slow crawling. Where the outlander can keep up with a true 4x4 in those situations is only if the outlander can maintain momentum. But your risking damaging your car if your not careful or the terrain is just to tough.
Plus, the likelihood of wearing out or breaking your outlander is way higher. Especially a outlander sport with their CVT transmission! Only the V6 outlander GT comes with a conventional 6 speed automatic transmission. The outlander sport in all models only comes with a CVT. And only the GT in the outlander comes with a non-CVT transmission.
But as long as your not rocking crawling or trying to crawl pretty steep terrain, the outlanders AWD system does pretty good. Better than any other non-luxury SUV I’ve seen or come across. Besides Volkswagen, they have the most capable AWD vehicles I’ve seen that I would kinda consider a non-luxury vehicle.
If you follow JonDZ Adventuring or TH-cam or instagram you’ll find more videos of AWD SUV’s going off road. If you watch my newest video the white outlander on there is on a few of Jon’s videos. He has a GT outlander with a V6 and conventional automatic transmission.

Awesome video. I have the 2018 version of the Outlander. I've been leary about up-sizing my tires because I'm told they'd be murder on my CVT - but your rug seems to be running just fine. Maybe I will look into it. As it stands I have a new pair of the Falken WildPeak A/T Trails, which I'm enjoying and are a decent compromise (for now...). The only thing is change about my Outlander after driving it for a few years is the engine. I shoulda went with the V6 (for the better transmission and towing). That being said, I do enjoy the great gas mileage. It gets the same as my previous car, a 2010 Chevrolet Aveo5.
I have 120k miles on my car. And I’ve had the larger tires on there since 60k miles. Change your transmission fluid every 15k miles and you’ll be fine. It’s 5 quarts. Drain and fill.

I just got a new 2024 outlander sport a couple of weeks ago es 2.0 liter and i am loving driving the outlander and very pleased with it and it's the nicest vehicle ive had than any other vehicles i had before.
Keep up on your maintenance. At a minimum change your transmission fluid every 30k miles. If your doing anything more then highway driving, change it sooner. I bought my outlander brand new and it now has over 200k miles on it. With no issues at all. I changed my transmission fluid every 15-20k miles myself at home. It’s super easy drain and fill. 5 quarts of oil. I’d recommend Mitsubishi transmission fluid. Engine oil and everything else you can buy what ever brand you like.
Nice to watch, the outlander seems pretty well in off road.

Only thing wrong with the Outlander is that you can't fit 33" tiers that will improve it's performance. Yes, it is not a rock crawler but it can off-road

Wrong tires for the outlander
@@rishop07 they are all terrain tires, 2 inches taller then stock. Not many options for this tire size. Can’t get much better tires for this size at this time.

@@rishop07 any tire can slide given the right circumstances. Tires are Yokohama Geolander A/T G015. They are a mild all terrain tire. But limited options for this tire size were available when the tires were purchased.

Mine is only the 2.4L gas engine with the CVT transmission. If you want to push it hard. Be sure to buy a scan gauge to monitor your transmission temps. That’s where all these AWD SUV’s fail. They can’t handle extended abuse off roading. You have to give it time to cool down if you do a steep or long climb. Or buy a aftermarket transmission cooler.
Best ever was the Mitsubishi Endeavor XLS. Got me out of a major mud slide as well as many snowy/ icy conditions. After 17 years had to give her up as repairs were costing more than her worth.
I love my endeavor.
If they were still making them I would have no question about my next vehicle.
How's it holding up? I change my transmission fluid every 30k. Mine has been doing well no oil burning runs great at 103,000 miles
170,000 miles. Still runs like a champ. Changed my transmission fluid every 15-30k miles depending on how much off roading I was doing. A/C compressor doesn’t work anymore. But other then that, everything else works perfect.
do you think the PHEV plug-in hybrid is capable of doing the same with a lift kit, or due to the battery it's a dumb idea to use it for offroading?
The same body style PHEV can be lifted with the same part numbers that fit the regular ones. But as far as capability, unfortunately the rear electric motor is not nearly as strong as the physical connection like mine has. So when you’re trying to climb or need more traction from the rear, it’s just not as capable. On flat ground as far as the system being able to move power around. It’s pretty good. But not quite as good as the regular outlanders.

Mitsubishi has over 34 world rally wins since 1974.
Rear suspension articulation at 2:41 is what most off-roaders about.
Articulation only gets you so far without lockers. Spinning tires and then gaining traction is a good way to snap axles! Especially front CV’s!
There was several times on this trail where my friend could not make it through the obstacle without engaging his lockers or using a dangerous amount of my momentum and wheel spin.
I have an Oct. 2015 Outlander model 2016 (2.3 Liter Diesel, 6 speed automatic). 7 years, 150 000 kilometers, no troubles, very good AWD performance.
The thing I found is the open diffs really suck. If you get yourself in a position where one front and one rear tire have a lot less load than the other, it’s essentially sending all the power to those 2 tires making it a 2wd and you’re going nowhere. I saw it happen a few times in your video too as it does on mine. You gotta go backwards and get a run at it in that situation. They’re great for extremely light off roading
The software isn’t the greatest for off roading. It seems more geared for on road driving. But it does brake the spinning wheels. Just not that aggressively. It is better then open diff 4x4 that doesn’t have computer intervention. Like my buddies Land Cruiser. Without his lockers he wouldn’t have been able to follow me. So for mild off roading. A basic AWD system with descent software is slightly better then real 4x4 with no software. But the other 99% of the time the vehicle is on road, pretty much every other category you rate a vehicle on, the AWD vehicle is better. I just stick to the trails I can do and just no when to call it and turn around when it’s to much for your vehicle.
@@jklpino yep I agree. I’m more so used to my Evo and Ralliarts AWD systems where the computer can actually lock and unlock the diffs and they have actual LSD’s. Unfortunately the cars have no ground clearance. If we could mix that drivetrain into the outlander it would be pretty killer

Actually, in Canada, they do have LSD’s. The front has a clutched based electronically “locking” front diff in America, But open rear. The Canadian version has a LSD rear and same front. Not sure why the American version doesn’t get the LSD. People have swapped in the Evo parts into them. But it’s not really worth putting those expensive parts in our cheap outlanders.

Thank you. The Mitsubishi Outlander does good in a lot of scenarios. But it struggles with steep terrain. You have to understand this vehicles strengths and weaknesses to drive it well off road. It’s a fun weekend vehicle and a great family vehicle!

Do you think a 2017 used Mitsubishi Outlander kaiteki is worth purchasing at 105,000 miles? There are other options with less miles, but the kaieki has the nice pearl white i like.
Mine has 200,000 miles now. And it’s been great so far. Only part I’ve had to replace is the AC compressor. Engine and transmission and everything has been great so far.

@@DanielESeo it has a soft suspension, so it is very comfortable. But it’s not made for 6 adults to be in. It’s meant for a family with kids. So the rear suspension is soft. If you’re planning on transporting a group of adults or loading it down with heavy cargo, it’s not ideal for that. If you have just 4 adults it’s fine.

I regret not buying 3.0 s awc. 2.4 awd not as good off road. A lot depends on tires. Great video and very under appreciated vehicle overall.
Watch my other videos. The white Outlander is a V6 GT model. And I’ll say it has more power off road. But only slightly more capable. I’d say the tires make a bigger difference than the engine does. But the GT will definitely be more reliable in the long run!

@@cameronbyrne8972 Yokohama Geolander G015 A/T tires. 235/60R18. They lasted me almost 80k miles. I highly recommend them as a great all around mild A/T tire! Im on my 2nd set now and I like them even more now!

I'm eyeballing a 2022 Outlander Sport 4cyl 2L cvt/4wd. After watching your video, I'm guessing I wouldn't have any trouble getting around in steep snow covered roads in Pennsylvania mountains in the winter?
As long as you have the proper tires for the conditions it will do great!

I’ve got a 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander myself and love taking it out. Is there any issues you’ve had with the lift?
None at all. It’s been over a years and 40k miles. Get an alignment after and enjoy your adventures! I no probably a dozen other outlanders with lifts and they’re all perfectly fine. No issues from anyone I no or even heard of.

Super video how much is the tire pressure to get the best grip outlander ?
Roughly 20psi has been the best all around tire pressure for me. I’ve gone down to 18psi on just rocky fire roads that didn’t have any big rocks, but I would go that low and hit any big rocks at speed, you’d likely bottom out your tire and hit your rim. If your on super soft sand and you get stuck, you can go down to 15psi for a short time. But 20psi was perfectly fine for me, never got stuck at all. But you also need to no I have 2 inch taller then stock tires. Also different brands and sizes of tires will also act differently at different pressures. And the weight in the vehicle also dictates how much pressure you should run. For the most part I don’t carry any extra weight in my vehicle besides normal stuff. And I’ve also run 20psi with stock tires. So generally speaking 20psi is a pressure.
How do you get to the top bolts for the rear shocks to put in the lift spacer?
On the passenger side you can get to them through the little pocket/cup holder thing. Just pop it out, it’s just clips. On the drivers side you can also pop it out but the nuts were at an angle making to hard to get to. So I removed the rear seats and the side panel to access the nuts. Once you have all that out of the way it’s easy. It probably took me as long to get to those 2 bolts as it took doing all other 3 corners of the vehicle. If your pretty mechanically inclined and your doing it by yourself it will take between half and a whole day depending on your skill level and tools. If your doing it with a friend, easily only a half a day.
that is the same AWD system from derived from Mitsubishi's iconic Lancer Evolution off-road rallye cars working well with 2.4L CVT keeping up with Land Cruiser. i also own a 2016 Outlander, but in V6 GT model.
Yep! This current AWD system is pretty much the old version of the Evo’s AWD system. It works well. The Outlander GT’s are great off road! I wish mine was a GT, but it does pretty well for what it is.
EVO has a compeltly different s-awc configure than the s-awc in the outlander. the yaw contol is on the front axle for outlander while the yaw control is on the back for EVO

They are Yokohama geolander AT G015’s all Terran tires, just a little worn down to about 5/32”. I’ll change them soon, but I’ll finish wearing them down 1st. I have about 50k miles on them, I expect to get 60k miles out of them.

@@brian315530 the tires are good enough for most of the things I do. They were the cheapest at the time and my 1st set of AT tires. So I went with them. My next set will be a more aggressive AT tire. Either a falken wildpeak or Toyo.
@@brian315530 it has a 1.5” strut spacer like and 2” taller then stock height tires. So over all 2.5” lift. I’m sitting at a physically measure 10” ground clearance at the oil pan and 10.25” at the center of the rear diff. Advertised ground clearance on this and other SUV’s isn’t super accurate. Mine was claimed to be 8.6”. So I should have 11.1” of ground clearance but that’s just not the case unfortunately.
Off road driving is only partially about AWD/4WD capabilities. It's also about suspension travel, comfort for passengers on bumpy roads, and, for durability, the sturdiness of the drivetrain. You don't want to wreck the suspension in 2 years of bumpy gravel roads. IMO, I wouln't recommend RAV4, Sportage, Tiguan or Changan as everyday dirt road cars. They seem more fragile. I know for a fact that Mazda CX-5 can handle the hits, but not gracefully, as it is not a comfortable place to be in such conditions. In change, Forester, Rogue and Outlander seem much more comfortable for long hours on bumpy gravel roads. I only fear that for some people, the softer Rogue suspension would make them dizzy. I stay with the Forester and Outlander as the best options for people living in rural areas where they abuse their suspensions on long term, not only occasionally on complicated obstacles.

Congrats. Gets yourself a tema4x4 40mm lift from Amazon. And some 235/60R18 all terrain tires and you’ll be set for some awesome adventures! I highly recommend Yokohama Geolander A/T G015’s. Mine last me 80,000 miles. I’m on my 2nd set now. They’re a great mild all terrain tire that performs well on and off road. And that tire size I mentioned will also fit without a lift!

traction control on or off?
Traction control on.
If it’s real steep or you need momentum more than traction control, I turn it off. But the traction control system transfers power much more effectively when it’s on, but it will only let you rev so high. With traction control off, it will still transfer power, and let you rev all the way up, but it doesn’t transfer power nearly as effectively. So mostly I would attempt to try most obstacles with traction control on. If it cuts to much power, I turn it off.

Why? 1st of all, I don’t recommend using any unibody vehicle, 4 cylinder vehicle, non-4x4 vehicle, non-low range 4x4 vehicle for the type of driving your talking about. You would need a true 4x4 vehicle with body on frame construction. My vehicle or any vehicle in its category is not meant for that type of driving. If your going to buy a vehicle specifically or that type of driving you need to get something like a Toyota 4Runner/4Tunner. Or something similar or better. You will spend more money up front. But you’ll have a more capable more reliable vehicle in the long run. If you buy my vehicle or a similar one and use and abuse if off road often, you’ll just destroy it. They’re not meant to handle that kind of use.

Да. Шина такого размера подойдет для чужестранки. Даже без лифта. Без руб. Никаких проблем, что бы то ни было. У меня был такой размер шины на моем автомобиле более 100 000 миль без каких-либо проблем.

Seems like the Outlander has a touch of Montero in it.
It has a heritage of off road racing. Years of development and testing. It’s not a purpose built off roader by any means. But the basics are there. Some mirror mods and skilled driving gets you a lot father than most think is possible. I surprise people every time I take it off roading somewhere. It’s a great family vehicle for the price and fun for weekend adventures.
@@jklpino I was very surprised to see that an unibody vehicle could "keep" up with an LC, but Mitsubishi owned the Dakar Rally races for years. It looks like they produced another winner with the Outlander. Great video!

Who did you buy 50mm spacers from? The biggest I’ve seen is 40mm, which is what I have.

@@jklpino Using 50mm in front need to change the tie rod for a longer one. The toe rod from VW Polo 2009 fits.

Hola, las únicas modificaciones que se han hecho son un elevador espaciador de puntal de 1,5 pulgadas de Amazon de tema4x4 y neumáticos todo terreno más grandes, de tamaño 235/60R18. Yokohama Geolander A/T G015. Actualmente no tengo ninguna protección corporal.

In this particular situation, yes I do believe a 2wd outlander could of done with water crossing. But due to the Ruts on the ground it would also need to have atleast the same lift and larger tires I have.

60+ years of off road racing pedigree, 12 WRC championships. I think Mitsubishi has plenty of game off road. The fact that this on road specifically designed SUV can do any off roading at all speaks volumes of the brands off roading history. Without any intention of making an off road vehicle they made a very capable off road vehicle. Imagine if they made a truly off road oriented vehicle like the old montero’s. Mitsubishi does still make true off road vehicles in other countries. Although unfortunately they build them of the low budget end compared to some other manufacturers.
This is basically an 8 cylinder vs a 4 cylinder!
V8, true 4x4, with a low range transfercase, triple lockers, on 33” tires, with an original starting price around $80k… vs 4 cylinder, AWD, no low range, no lockers, on 29” tires, with an original starting price around $24k.
You can still have fun with a AWD vehicle, and a true 4x4 without lockers or traction control aids is only slightly better than a good AWD system car, and in some cases the AWD will actually do better due to intelligence traction control systems.
Hoepe you have full size spare sorted cause that space saver underneath is fare from ideal for off roading.
This particular trail I was only a mile or 2 from a paved road. I have only the stock spare tire and AAA at the moment. A full sized spare is in the works. Coming soon when I get the tires replaced.

Wider tires don’t really help very much on this vehicle. It doesn’t have enough power to get good use out of them. Plus I like to do a good amount of snow driving, so narrower tires are best for that.

@@mitchellshadrin1172 my tires are over all 2 inches taller then the stock tires. They will also fit without a lift. My size is the max size you can run height and width with stock suspension. Lift you can do slightly more. I no for sure you can do a 29.5” tall tire. I’m planning on attempting to run a 30” tall tire soon.

I own a 2018 outlander SE great car. I was wondering about the driving mode Normal, Awc eco I was wondering what mode should I use in what situation/condition?
You can use normal mode all the time. Eco mode isn’t much different from normal mode, it won’t save you gas it will just numb your throttle sensitivity. Snow mode is obviously best when your driving in the snow. It also numbs the throttle sensitivity some but it also makes the AWD system work at a much higher sensitivity level. Lock mode should only be used when your wheels are no longer touching pavement. If the snow is thick enough your no longer touching pavement lock mode should be used. Anytime when off roading on any terrain lock mode is best. When driving in sand, traction control should be turned off via the button. Other than that, leave traction control on unless you fail to over come the obstacles with it on do to lack of power. Then you can turn it off. But you will loose some of the functionality of the AWD system, it will works but not as effectively, now you would be relying on wheel speed and momentum to over come the obstacle.

@@ryanhuang3175 that is for a oil change. I’d read through your owners Manuel. It’s a bit confusing on how to reset that. If your vehicle has more than 30k miles. I’d recommend doing a transmission fluid drain and fill every 30k miles and sooner if your off roading it. I would also recommend doing the transfer case fluid at the same intervals. I do mine every 15-20k miles when I’m off roading semi regularly.
@@jklpino can that be done at any mechanic/auto Body Shop or does it have to be from a Mitsubishi dealership? Also if I were to be behind on transmission fluid would it be a major issue in the future?
@@ryanhuang3175 any shop should be able to perform those services easily. I would use Mitsubishi brand fluid tho. Depending on the vehicle has been used. Being behind on some of those services isn’t a huge deal. But all vehicles with CVT transmission are notorious for going out before a conventional transmission would go out. So if you don’t keep up on your maintenance you’ll only accelerate that problem.

@@LocoMe4u ahhh… yes, S-AWC does brake the spinning wheel. The regular AWC does not.
@@jklpino no real SAWC doesn't need too as it can send 100% of torque at any wheel at any time
AWC can only do 80% or so before limited slip diff slips, so they then apply brake to one wheel to artificially raise that % for a short while
the Outlander should come in proper 4 Wheel Drive, The AWD is just not up to it.

@@markworth8135 it’s not meant for rougher tracks. No AWD SUV is. If your trying to compare a AWD SUV to a true 4x4 vehicle. That’s not even a comparison. They are built for completely different reasons on completely different platforms.

@@markworth8135 if you want fuel economy and passenger capacity there’s nothing better. I did not buy this vehicle for off roading. It’s just something we do occasionally for fun. I have over 113,000 miles on the 4 cylinder engine with the CVT transmission. Bought it brand new and haven’t had any issues so far. I do 100% of the maintenance myself. I’m a former dealer mechanic (not Mitsubishi).

The flicker? That’s just the update speed of the camera catching the LED lights in between frames making them look like they flicker when they don’t.
amazing video!! finally something where I can gauge its capabilities. I have a 2016 Outlander GT (v6) stock. Where on earth did you get your lift from?? I haven't been able to find anything in north America! I might opt to get dedicated rims for my all-terrain tires; I see that you're using the OEM (whew) lol good on you.
My lift is from Amazon by Tema4x4. It’s a 40mm strut spacer lift. King, H&R, dobilson and more all make list springs. Highest I believe is 30mm. You can mix the strut spacers along with lift springs and get a max of 70mm lift or about 2.5 inches. You can also fit 2” larger tires and get a total of 3.5 inches of lift. Tema4x4 is the cheapest lift. But I highly recommend Anderson design fabrication lift. I’m happy to answer anymore questions you have. If you look through my other videos you’ll find a white outlander GT. To get an idea of how capable they are. The GT’s are definitely the most capable of the outlanders and best suited for modifying and having fun off road.

@@tinatee276 you can run 235/60R18’s stock without any lift and without rubbing anything. They’re 29” tall, 2” taller than stock. You can run 29.5” with a lift with slight rubbing at full lock under articulation. To my knowledge no ones gone taller than a 29.5” tire. If you wanna contact me on Instagram I’m @j_k_adventuring. Jake, I’m liking these longer offroad videos! Interesting to see that the pre-Atrac Landcruiser 100 remind us of what happens when an open diff vehicle get its axles crossed up. That landcruiser has a rear LSD, but after many miles they just turn into an open diff.
4x4 vehicles are great, but without LSD or lockers they’ll get stuck way faster then a advanced AWD SUV with minor mods will.
This particular land cruiser has a factor center and rear lock, as well as a aftermarket electronic front locker. So if you read the description I put in this video. You’ll see the entire time he was either fully unlocked or fully triple locked. It’s pretty obvious when he’s unlocked.
Jon... idk how you do it. Making these long videos and all the video editing you do. It takes a huge amount of time to make the videos and run the trails at the same time. I’m not much for video editing so this video is completely unedited. It’s just all spliced together. But doing trails with another vehicle and have another person to spot me with a dedicated videoing person made things way easier! I’m still just a guy with a camera phone making random videos. But I have fun doing it.
@@jklpino that is why outlanders/Montero(sport) are better than any Land cruiser. My fj80 had a SFA as they do, which is more important than lsd or lockers. But my Montero sport performed 2x with that 4wd/awd system. Soild axles and lockers react to fallbacks due to physics, but a great awd systems prevent fallbacks by providing smart power to 4 wheels.

@@shaiapouf420 yes sir! In more extreme terrain you need a different type of vehicle than mine. But for the most part you can do a lot with a AWD vehicle if you are careful and no how to drive. Not saying I’m the best driving in the world, I’m learning more and more every time I go out just like anyone else. But I think I surprise most people with what my vehicle can do. It doesn’t look very impressive on video. But in person it certainly does. My land cruiser buddy was very shocked and surprised it even made it up the 1st obstacle much less the rest of them. The only ones I could not do was do to my approach angle. The Outlander have a large front nose that just sticks out to far. But I pushed it as far as I was comfortable pushing it that day, so I’m not sad I couldn’t do one or 2 obstacles. Other than that, for a daily driven family vehicle, I couldn’t be happier with its capabilities. The only thing I wish was different is the CVT transmission.
