      Dan great video! Keep up the great work. - I've got one on preorder. Still torn on making the switch from current Fuji setup to this a7riii. For someone who mainly uses camera for Travel, Landscapes, Everyday Documentary and doing more video lately... do you think it's worth making the switch??? Thanks in advance!

      In 3 more sleeps! ! Great vid, Dan! Do you think I should pick up the small grip even if I'll probably end up getting the battery grip?

      One is enough for now :)

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @snapclik Thanks! Probably skip the small grip then. It's not the greatest anyway because you lose the tripod socket and can't remove a battery so I'd just get the grip. I used the camera for 3 days without the battery grip and I even had one with me! Just wanted to be smaller/lighter because we were traveling so I never ended up even using it so I'm sure you will be fine until you get the grip. You will want it if you are hand holding a 70-200 all day but for normal use it's fine without it.

      Didn't realize it blocked the battery door as well. Wont bother with it, thanks!

    I just ordered one of these and i'm excited about having my first camera with an evf. I made a rookie mistake last week while shooting wildlife with my canon sl2 where I took pictures through the viewfinder only to find out later that I forgot to adjust the settings and came out with dark images. So having an evf that will show me exactly what the pictures will look like before i even press the shutter will be tremendously helpful

      @@rymdskrotet it is definitely a great camera for the money. The autofocus isn't the greatest compared to other cameras on the market but for an all around professional grade shooter you can't go wrong with this camera. I've been getting great images so far and I'm very happy with it

    Your best review yet - and you and your wife are now the #1 photo/video expert couple. Were you using the 70-200 f4 or 2.8 in some of your shots? Which of these two lenses would you recommend.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Charles!!! Really appreciate it. We used the 70-200 f2.8 GM and the 24-70 f2.8 GM almost exclusively. I don't use the F4 much because we shoot weddings which pretty much demands F2.8 glass. It's a great lens and crazy sharp but also unbelievably expensive. If you don't absolutely need F2.8, the F4 is on an awesome sale right now: bhpho.to/2iaMZ9T so I would be more likely to pick that up and maybe add the Sony 85mm F1.8 for when you need the wider aperture which is also on sale: bhpho.to/2hPVmaO . You could do both those and still save around $700 vs getting the 70-200 F2.8 GM

  • @appleninja4ever

    I've played around with the Sony a7RIII and I found it to be on the smaller size and not fully weather hardened. I'm likely going for the Nikon D850 that is battle weatherproofed and built strong like the famed Nikon F3 and F4's if you remember those. By the way, I'm not a Nikon focused person. I own various camera manufacturers. I require the specialized lenses and other attachments of the multi-faceted Nikon line. Also, if you haven't checked out the Sigma 14mm f/1.8 ART DG HSM Lens (a lens of the year contender) for the Nikon, Canon and Sigma line you should at least read about it. The shot count per battery charge is an amazing 5100 + with battery grip. It does set you back 1000.00 but you get a vertical grip with control buttons, 9FPS and excellent balance. The 45.7 megapixels provides outstanding resolution. However, its not for everyone when you consider the size and weight. For street/doc photography you can't go wrong with the high res/dynamic range of the smaller Fuji line. And for video the top Panasonic GH5 is in a league of its own. If you want the best you can get a Hasselblad but we can't have everything. I've found that you need certain cameras for specialized needs. The idea that one camera fits all is wishful thinking. Sony has done a great job with this camera but with so many great cameras on the market, the real differntiation is the person behind it.

    On this Sony A7r III 3 an important thing is missing which is the color inversion or negative. Very useful for reproducing color or black and white negatives. Many photographers have these negatives in stock and could digitize them. I hope this message reaches Mr. Sony's ears.

  • @CartubeCoIl
    @CartubeCoIl 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great review. I wish Sony would listen to the pros, which might care about weight but much less about size. GH5 is a great example of how you should make a camera. It's lite and very comfortable to use. Well, maybe Sony a7riv?

      +Soumendra Jena yeah, I'm going to try to throw a couple 4k files in a folder tonight along with some original raw files. Link will be in the description. 4k video seems great with a bit more detail using S35 due to the oversampling. If you need a stills camera that can shoot video, there is absolutely nothing better than the a7riii. I still found some interesting color shifts though and obviously no 10 bit is a bummer especially if you shoot log. Screen is also not as bright as I would like

    Mr. Dan the Man
    I think you would have the hottest views on youtube if you took the A7r lll and the Sigma mc-11 adapter to a lens rental place. And you tried every lens possible all in one video. Testing focus speed and eye focus. Like every Canon, Sigma, and Tamron lens at the rental place. And any other Canon mount company. Especially the original Sigma 50 and 85 f1.4 lenses. And the first Tamron 24/70 f2.8 VC Just for me haha. But i really do believe it would get a huge amount of views. Many people want to know what lenses work good and witch ones don't.

    Hey Dan,
    After watching a couple of ur reviews I subscribed.
    I notice two great quality in you.
    1. You connect and reply to ur fans
    2. Your reviews are honest and inclusive.
    Now time for my Question.
    Shall I buy Sony A7RIV or wait for Sony A7IV.
    When u expect A7IV in market , any idea approx price.
    Thanks.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the sub!!!
      So, I have no idea when the A7IV will hit but I full expect it to be in the next few months. My guess on price would be about $2300. Now that Sony has the A7c as the "entry" full frame camera, they can move a bit up-market with the A7IV. Now, about which one to get...if you shoot photos mainly, the A7RIV is absolutely amazing and there will be very little reason for the A7IV over the A7RIV in my opinion. However, if you are a video shooter as well, there will be some massive upgrades on the A7IV that would be well worth waiting for since the A7RIV is a bit behind in the video department. Hope that helps! The A7RIV is on a rare awesome sale right now too: bhpho.to/3jKNxgt

    I have mine on preorder. It's nice to have 2 card slots, but it's a bummer they did not put both UHS II slots in their. I think this is going to be a hybrid shooters dream camera. Do you have an intervalometer you can recommend for the Sony a7r iii? It is a shame it's not built-in. Hopefully it will come back with a firmware update.

    There is something about Sony system never been mentioned or even noticed by reviewers. Of course, people always complaining sony system's lousy menus and control, but actually the real problem is neither the menu itself nor the button layout. The most obvious feature that sony need to improve is the way to toggle between different modes/settings, For example, if i want to change from AF-s to AF-c, even if assigned to one of the custom function button, after pressing that button, there will be a short menu showing up, occupying the entire LCD screen, and you have to scroll though several lines (AF-s, AF-c, MF, DMF in this case) which is, due to smooth action, very slow and very easy to over scroll. There is no way to quickly lock on AF-c with muscle memory. After selecting AF-c, I have to press shutter release once to go back to normal screen to continue shotting. The same goes to changing RAW/JPG, Focus area, WB, on/off steady shot, Full frame/crop mode et al. It requires at lease three sequential steps to complete one change, during which you are not able to frame again, and forced to open LCD screen, since there is no shoulder screen. Whereas, with Nikon/canon system, all you need to do is hold a button (AF mode, WB, RAW, et al) and at the same time push the rear wheel one or two clicks to complete to toggle. In the mean time, you can keep looking through the viewfinder to frame/focus/track the subject, or just look down the shoulder screen, there will be no menu involved in the whole process. I hope sony can get this improved in the future, as this together with slow startup time is probably the last two steps that sony is from a real pro camera as compared with nikon/canon DSLRs, giving the already improved battery and auto focus.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sony does now have a menu option for having custom modes triggered by a programmed button. So you COULD program your AF on button for AF-C JPEG to quickly navigate to that. Very similar to what Canon does in the 5D4. You can also setup one of the custom modes to whatever settings you want

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The RIII is still great but if you don't need all those megapixels, it's pretty close to the A7IV which is a huge improvement in a few areas

  • @Photographicelements
    @Photographicelements 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video! Would ever consider using this camera for a wedding, both for photography & video?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, I absolutely plan on using it for both. Sally and I shoot weddings (both photo and video) and we will be giving our impressions on it soon. Camera arrives tomorrow!
      With the longer batter, dual cards, better controls, and solid focus system, I think Sony is finally ready for this market. I still think it has some weaknesses for video such as a limited 30 min record time, no flip out screen (a little dim too), and average IBIS for video, but certainly no other single camera does both photo and video better.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have both and a comparison is on the way! The D850 is great as long as you don't need to use live view and don't care about the size. But I do think the features on the a7RIII start adding up to a slightly better camera, especially if you want to shoot video.

    Hi Dan, I see you know a lot about photography and asking if you can clear something for me... I was importing some raw files from my nikon D500 and saw same huge difference in exposure between the preview I had before importing the NEF files with acdsee 9 and the imported RAW into lightroom CC classic... The huge difference is that if I open the NEF files into acdsee just to visualize the exposure is higher and closer to the right light... in lightroom the nef files seems so dark.... without post processing at all... I can see a little diference in exposure if I set the camera profile from adobe standard to camera standard etc but the diff in exposure are not so much into lightroom and still so dark...I just realisez I am increasing almost all my photos exposures into lightroom among 1.5-2.5 stops.... I mean to equalize what I am seeing for the same raw file in acdsee I must increase the Exposure in lightroom like 2 stops... why this huge difference and why acdsee seems to read a more correct exposure ?

    Hi Dan, I'm looking into buying my first full-frame for portraits. My biggest hesitation with mirrorless is that EVF vs OVF which I am accustomed to. Any thoughts about adjusting to EVF? Debating between this and Canon 5D Mk4 for natural buttery light.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! Honestly as long as you are buying a decent camera with a good EVF (A7RIII, Z6, EOS R, XT-3 or better), the EVF will be EASY to adjust to and being able to see exactly what your image will look like before shooting will make you wonder why you didn't go mirrorless EVF earlier lol. The only adjustment points will be when you are shooting flash and when in super low light where the EVF is better because it will show you the scene brighter than your eyes will see it but it will also have grain. The only big negative to an EVF is when shooting crazy slow shutter speeds under 1/15 where the refresh of the viewfinder will become an issue. In those cases the EVF has the option of showing you your ACTUAL settings OR a more natural view. Typically you would want to show your actual settings unless you are in one of the bad cases I mentioned when the natural view will be best

      In super 35, the a7RIII will have more detail though likely worse high iso performance. In full frame mode the a7SII will most likely be the champion based on what I have seen. Have not compared both directly but I have shot with both. My guess is that the a7SIII will have something like a 16MP sensor for oversampling to improve detail slightly

    Hello Dan,
    I am coming from fuji x t2 and I had 56mm , 16mm and 35mm prime lenses. now would like to shift to sony and would you recommend a3 or ar3 for me. Generally I shoot portraits of family and friends, some videos and some nature photography. I am just a hobbyist but like sharp pictures which I normally used to achieve with fuji 56mm for portraits. Please advise me

      @learningcameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! So while the A73 is certainly plenty camera for you and would indeed be an upgrade from the XT2, the A7R3 is a bit nicer with more resolution which can be great for retouching portraits and a better viewfinder/screen. It's probably not worth the upgrade from a financial perspective, especially if you are just a hobbyist, but if you have the budget, the R3 is technically a tad better. Otherwise save the $ and get the A73 and use the savings for some nice lenses. The Sony 85mm F1.8 is a great lens, not too expensive, and would be similar to that 56mm but if you have the budget, the Sony 85mm F1.4GM is dreamy. Here are my recommended lenses: goo.gl/ic5Uqd

      Hey! So definitely not. The only advantage to the RIII is slightly more resolution which isn't important unless you are printing crazy large, a slightly higher resolution screen/viewfinder, and a bit better weather sealing. Nothing that most people would miss. Definitely keep the A7III and we might actually see an A7IV coming up in the next few months that should be a better upgrade

    Hi Dan I’m in the market for mirroeless camera coming from Fuji XT2. Wanted to switch to Sony A7riii and or the A9. I tried the A7iii at the nearby best buy and not a fan of the lower res EVF and LCD that’s why I’m leaning towards the Riii or the A9. My question is, is it worth the extra $$ to get the A9? I’m a hobbyist but planning to make photography as a business this year. Shooting more of family (with kids), portraits, editorial/lifestyle style shoots and second shooting weddings too other than that I shoot just normal stuff in the house with my family and little kids. Should I get the A9 to catch the fast moving kids and also so when I shoot more weddings then i’m covered with the silent shutter. Or go for the R3 for better MP. What would you get if you will pick one as a event and portrait shooter? Pls help me decide. Thanks in advance.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would have said no to the A9 before but Sony just announced an insane firmware upgrade for it that takes it a step ahead of the A7RIII in many ways. I definitely think the A7RIII is fast enough for what you are shooting though but the A9 would offer silent shooting for weddings, higher frame rate, better autofocus, and a few other upgrades although with slightly lower MP. I like having more MP for editing portraits (you can zoom closer for skin retouching) but I almost never want more than 24MP unless I'm working for a print magazine or doing super large prints. Tough call though

    • @kobyas
      @kobyas 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for you honest opinion and advice I really appreciate it! I think I’ll get the A9 for now. I dont think I will need the 42MP for the stuff I do, last thing I want to worry about is my computer slowing down due to larger files. And plus they have the Sony trade up event now, with a trade in it make’s the A9 price very reasonable on the stuff it can do specially with the newest firmware.
      Thanks again Dan 😊

      Not really the same class given it's micro 4/3. Gopros could handle 120fps back in 2014 (and for way cheaper) but again, the smaller sensor size makes this easier to handle. Getting a full frame sensor to hit 120fps is tough.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm between the a7RIII and GH5. The a7RIII is better quality for sure and my personal favorite to own but I feel like it was more of Sony just getting in to the zone and fixing the things that were still behind the competition from the a7RII. The GH5 for me was just a complete forward push for videographers with tons of features/abilities that were not available in any other sub $5000 camera and it is still unmatched in many ways.

  • @trevorpinnocky
    @trevorpinnocky 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    If you're shooting portraits, landscape or product there's basically no reason to buy an a7r III, imo. The idea of 10 42MP images shooting through a buffer has little appeal to me. I already spend enough time culling. *But* for wedding, event or serious astrophotographers there are some interesting features and it's a nice little *upgrade* over the a7r ii.

    • @rattoh
      @rattoh 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No option to shoot smaller raw files kills it for me as a wedding photographer, and no play memories in the a7riii is really disappointing as I use it for casual shooting and landscapes a lot. 42mp IS overkill, slows my workflow and eats u away too much HDD space for weddings. I'm sticking to my a7rii until I can afford an a9 or when sony finally releases a 24MP camera with dual card slots and better AF.

  • @ttight11
    @ttight11 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    So, it's a wonderful camera because it finally caught up with the competition? Oh, but it is still to small to handle well. Dan Watson? Who is he???

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Does the competition have IBIS, an EVF, 4k oversampled video with log recording/peaking/zebra/timecode/hlg, 68% AF coverage, 10fps mech or 10fps silent shooting, usb c charging, pixel shift, & Eye AF? I think they did a bit more than catch up with the competition.

    • @ttight11
      @ttight11 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Valid, but the way this marketing game is played is to offer more than the competition at competitive pricing. Sony wants ~ $1k (street) more for that stuff and that is all some of it is, is stuff. Image quality is just on par with the competition. I rue the day that DSLRs only have a EVF option. Pixel shift is basically worthless at this point (perfect it before you make us pay for it). I'll give you the usb charging point (that's one). Watch Tony Northrup ... then make him not so nice. That's me :)

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jeff Tight the cameras themselves are very price competitive. This is lower than the 5d4 was for example but Sony lenses are still extremely expensive and no 3rd party native options exist so that's partly to blame. I actually could see the difference in pixel shift at 200% in my file (you can download my files below) so it could be valuable for large prints. There are few situations that warrant it and I wish you could generate it in camera but I certainly wouldn't call it broken. I also believe this generation of evf is good enough to compete with optical and they will only get better unlike optical. It's nice to see your exposure in the viewfinder and you can chimp without taking your eye out of the viewfinder with no glare at 100%! Great on a sunny day

      +Nelstill so all the shots of me talking to the camera were actually shot on the GH5 which is my main video camera so use that for reference. Technically the GH5 is a better video camera in many ways but the smaller sensor means you can't shoot above 800iso without grain, you need wide aperture primes or speed Boosters to get shallow depth of field, and the autofocus sucks. Shooting at an aperture of F16-F22 gives you the starburst effect. You would not do that for portraits where you want your person to be the subject and not the sun.

In the UK that is 2 months salary for some people and you say it as though it is just something you put on your credit card. You have not bought a lens yet, so you are talking mega money. There are many Uk residents would love to own such a camera, but do not have and will never have that kind of money. Realism is needed in your reviews as for many it will always be a dream.

      hahahaha @Carl. My last Nikon camera I actually purchased was the D600 which was famously recalled but only after Nikon screwed us owners over by putting out the D610, an IDENTICAL camera with a fixed shutter. I think at least half of their cameras since then have had a recall. But you are right @bass that a 600mm lens doesn't balance well on a small body....of course Sony doesn't have anything even close to that long at the moment. But even if you have a D5 & a 600mm, it's usually the lens that carries the body not the other way around so in reality, Sony's camera will be putting less stress on your 600mm lens! An EVF takes getting used to but once you have used a good one, it's tough to go back. It's also great for previewing your images in direct sun where even the best screens are tough to see. It's like having a loupe with you everywhere you go. You also never need to take your eye out of the viewfinder whether you are shooting or previewing images

      Mako Sports I knew you would reply...lol...dont get me wrong if Sony's your thing go for it, I was actually impressed with the A9 but I just prefer a bigger heavier camera body
