One of my favorite features about this camera is the manual focus system. I love how it automatically zooms in when I turn the focus ring so I can really dial it in. It makes me actually want to take more manually focused shots now.
With the recent price drop on the a7RIII with the launch of the a7RIV, the a7RIII has become quite compelling. Got one and enjoying it. My a6300 is now the backup or b cam.
Thanks, Dustin for your fantastically detailed reviews. This is my first upgrade from a Canon 550D, which I have been using for what seems like an eternity. I had looked at getting the A7III and a Tamron 28-75, but after your reviews, I switched to an A7RIII and both the Samyang 35mm & 85mm f/1.4 lenses. It's a little more $ but I'm super excited to have some new tools to shoot with. Again a big thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Awesome review! I’ve been waiting for someone to do a long term review on the camera, and not just an “initial thoughts”. I’ve had the A7Riii since release day, and I absolutely love it. You really nailed it though when you covered all of its strengths and weaknesses. Seriously good work, especially with staying so subjective throughout the whole review. I’m glad to see you are picking up one for your personal kit, I hope you love yours as much as I love mine.
Thank you. I too find TH-cam reviews often go no deeper than either a quick trade show breakdown (just to be first) or drawing a conclusion based on a trip paid for by Sony for a day or two using the camera only in situations designed to emphasize its strengths.
i don’t want to buy anything but i still watch your videos because i enjoy watching someone who know what he is talking about , i’m an old fan of your channel dustin just with a new account :) keep up the stellar work that you do on reviewing these gears 👊🏻
EXCELLENT review, Dustin. Even better considering we can check out the more specific videos you already made. Best review on this cam to me. Thanks, we appreciate your work.
Brilliant work Dustin, a typical unbiased, comprehensive review from you, very much appreciate all your work, you echo my thoughts exactly, i changed over from many years shooting Canon when the A7r3 came out, I have now sold all my Canon gear and couldn’t be happier with the results.
Superb carefully presented review, as always. I’m just so pleased that, as an a7 series shooter, youtube’s best camera gear reviewer (imo) is covering the FE platform on a regular basis. Thank you Dustin!
Hi Dustin. Great review. In 2020, would you still recommend purchasing one? I have an A7R2 and a bunch of FE glass. A 16-35 F4 Zeiss, 24-105 F4, 70-200 F4, 50 1.8 and most recently the 100-400 GM with a 1.4 TC. I shoot mainly landscapes but have started doing some wildlife and birding. Trying to convince myself to get an A9 and keep the A7R2 but that might not be the most economical route. I’ve considered selling it and upgrading to an A7R3 or even maybe keeping the A7R2 and buying a a6400 to address my buffer and auto focus issues with the A7R2. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks.
Dustin would this camera do well for shooting college sports as well as wildlife? Many call this a great all around camera. It can do multiple things well. Or should I go with the A9?
Awesome review as always! I picked up a used A7R II after the III came out. Even though it doesn’t do things as fast, it’s still a remarkable camera. Most of my adapted canon lenses work well with the Metabones adapter and latest firmwares, though some of them hunt for focus in “advanced” mode. My 6D still focuses better in extreme low light, but switching over to manual focus on the Sony is easy enough. I’m in love with eye-AF and IBIS. I can get consistent pin-sharp handheld photos with the Canon 135mm f/2 EF @ 1/40 second shutter speed!
That really depends on your needs. I personally have no interest in the A9 because the burst rate and buffer of the a7R3 is plenty for me, so I prize the higher resolution (and lower price). The opposite may be true for you. I shoot very little sports or action.
Hey Dustin, your video was so useful that now I cant make up my mind whether to get a7riii or any other high end cameras. Does sony a7riii worth the cash? or prolly with the same amount of money I can get a better camera than a7riii? Hope to get good opinions from you as Im getting my a7riii in few days.
Great review thanks! Hard choice whether to invest into Nikon or Sony. Certainly on the Sony side the sensor dust issues and weather sealing are concerns as I will be using the camera for hiking trips in the mountains. Is the Nikon D850 that much more rugged that it’s a better adventure camera than the A7riii?
John Boy There a You Tube video called Sony Mirrorless in Africa - a discussion with Matt Granger. Depending on where your going it’s well worth watching although it was made before the A7R iii came out. I’ve been & live in dustier countries than I suspect where Dustin made this & I would still trust Nikon & Canon long before Sony for all but City & indoor use. Nikon D850 which I have is excellent for outdoor use & if you want similar in mirrorless than you may want to consider m4/3 system. Also not mentioned in the long term review , the water test was a disgrace for Sony given the asking price . That also applies to Sony lenses like the 24-105 f/4 reviewed by Dustin , compact & very well balanced but it too has been reported to be a little more susceptible to dust than maybe you’d like. For me I’d wait for the Sony A7R IV model, but certainly test the 3. Ergonomics still favour the D850 for me & if you value engagement than Sony is the last brand I’d choose DSLR or mirrorless, other brands Fuji , Panasonic, Olympus are far more enjoyable in the photographic process, that’s me try it for yourself if you haven’t already?
Superb review again Dustin. You do the most thorough and comprehensive reviews on youtube. You are the reference by which I judge all others. Thank you.
Another objective and thoughtful review by DA. All reviewers need to take a page from this playbook. I’ll likely never be a Sony user as the form factor and ergonomics with 400-500mm glass tracking 600mph jets at Airshows doesn’t work for ME (I’m a Canon diehard) but clearly Sony is breaking new ground and deserves its place. We all benefit from choices and options. Thanks as always (glad you’re keeping your 5DM4 🙂)
What I wonder on both the A7 III and A7R III is the LCD and colour reproduction in general. I have come from an A7 II and I read a lot of people complaining how bad the colors were with it etc etc. Switching to the regular 7 III, the LCD on the back of the camera was horrible. The colors shown there did have nothing in common with what I would later see on my computer, everything was shifted towards red/orange on a very drastic way. I have read more complaints on this on the internet, however it didn't seem to be a problem for everybody or the majority. On the 7R III, however, that's a bit different. The LCD itself is no problem. However, as soon as you use creative mode rendering for JPGs or movies or use a picture profile based on any colour profile not being "Still", there is a noticeable reddish shift, too. I have now configured a picture profile based on "Still" colour mode, however I lose silent shooting that way on any occasion where I don't want to edit RAWs. Interestingly, turning down magenta by -5 in colour depth settings turns out to be the major factor. That's not a perfect solution, though.
I have found that colors haven't gotten a lot better after this generation of Sony cameras. I have no complaints about the a7IV, a7RV, or Alpha 1 that I or my team own.
@@DustinAbbottTWI After some confusion, despair and working into the colour theme, I can declare this as "solved". The problem for me are the WB presets. I don't know why, but somehow they don't work properly for me, especially yellow/red/magenta always freak out if I use these in combination with SOOC-JPGs. They are just "too warm", especially overcast and shadow. I tried to tweak the presets from yellow/red/magenta tint more towards green and blue, but I couldn't really achieve a final breakthrough there, so I decided to return to setting WB manually as Kelvin value - et voila, the problem isn't there anymore. Strange!
Great review thanks Dustin. If you were still shooting on the 6D with canon glass had not got your 5div yet and were now looking to upgrade which would you choose , this or the 5D? Given they are in the same price bracket.
That would probably depend on how deep my investment in Canon glass was. Canon still has the best selection of lenses, and selling and replacing lenses gets expensive.
Love your detailed review of this camera. Definitely on my short list of cameras to upgrade to for hybrid photo/video coming from a D750. Thanks for sharing!
This is along with your other videos, the most extensive review of the a7riii. I am excited for your reviews of FE lens especially the Tamron and Sigmas that will be coming out. Thank you for you detailed reviews.
Fantastic review. I sent to one of our team. I also told them we can't upgrade until our videos look like yours as you said this was shot on the a6500. Cheers.
Hi Dustin! I'm considering buying this camera plus an adapter to use as a second camera. I'm a Canon user with Canon, Tamron and Sigma lenses and I'm curious to hear from you if it's a viable option to actually use it in real life with an adapter? I currently shoot with a 6D Mk2 and an 80D for sports and extra reach. The Sony would be awesome for still portraits, landscapes and such from what I read about it. Would love the extra resolution and to try out mirrorless. What adapter would you recommend and like I said, is it even an option without going for native lenses? Thanks in advance!
Michael, the Sigma MC-11 is the best all-round adapter. It works pretty well for a lot of lenses, but it does take learning the focus system to get the best out of adapted glass. It's generally great for slow moving subjects, but fast moving subjects will be lens-specific.
Yes. The PDAF points on the Sony cover a large part of the frame but don't cover most of the edges. At the edges you only have contrast detect AF. The A9 has PDAF on the whole frame though.
Thank you once again Mr. Abbott i always enjoy your detailed reviews. I am now considering an upgrade to my A7ii, a camera that i have enjoyed using. Is thare much of a image quality difference with the Bsi sensor in the A7iii. I am trending toward the A7R3. With the exception of one autofocus Zeiss all my Glass, some of it old are manual focus. Just a by the way question, would you replace your A7R3 with another if it were to be stolen or badly damaged. Thanks
Regarding being stuck with FF stills shooting on the A7R3, I have assigned the FF/APS-C toggle to the joy stick button, allowing me to immediately toggle between them as I often do shooting birds. I love that ability.
As always, great review ! May I ask you, what would you think about buying the a7r3, without any intention on switching to the overpriced sony lenses? There is no way for me to replace my 8 L series lenses.
I've got a kit of lenses that mostly translates well via adapter to Sony. I think recent announcements by Tamron and Sigma for native FE lenses is huge. It will give a wider lens selection at better prices and will also put some pressure on Sony to come in at more reasonable price points on new lenses.
capture one does look far better, highly recommend. Afterall they are made by pro (phrase one) so the workflow definitely makes a lot of sense. you can simply open some raws to compare. color is sort of reinterpreted by the software so what you use to open affects the images.
Thank you for being so honest. You’re the first review I’ve seen on TH-cam addressing dust on the sensor. After the second time shooting on the a7rii I noticed the same thing. Returned it last night. Ordered a7riii. Doesn’t look like I’ll be getting rid of my problem. I cleaned my sensor on my 5DMarkii after 10 years. I’ve never had this issue. I looked up some forums stating cause was the IBIS. “Oil spots on sensor” You notice them f/11-22.
It's still an issue with the a73, too, though, surprisingly, I've had little issue with the a6500. The best camera I've ever used for that is the 5D Mark IV. It's sensor almost never needs cleaning, even for a pro like me.
Wow, I'm pretty new to the system, so that's a tough call. My next project that I've just started is a review of the top 3 50mm options for FE, though, so stay tuned.
Top Review Dustin :) , the weather sealing or lack thereof made me go with the Canon 5DSR and it got drenched in Kyoto and was working perfectly, the only issue was the weight. Was thinking of buying an A7III Or A7RIII for travel and use my L Glass but it's really not that much of a weight saving, so may take the 5DSR on more travels, what would you do if you were in my position wanting to save weight for my travels ?
If you really want to travel light, the a73 or a7r3 are solid choices. Pair them with some of the smaller, lighter lenses (Zeiss Batis or Loxia lenses are good choices if you want amazing image quality). The Tamron 28-75mm RXD F2.8 is a great choice, too. Awesome image quality, relatively light, and very versatile.
Hello Dustin , thanks for the wonderful review . How do you compare the video autofocus of the r3 and the 6500? . My 6500 seems to focusing faster , I’m really surprised about that .
Awesome as usual. I love your reviews! I also notice that the unprotected sensor gets dusty fast! Did you wet clean it? The air blower doesn’t seem to get the sensor clean. I also noticed that the camera freezes randomly when clicking the shutter button while back-focusing or clicking the eye focus button (when using a sigma adapter with EF lenses). I had to turn the camera off and on again to get it to work! Have you encountered that problem since you are using the same combo of adapter and EF lenses?
I agree, there is no option to choose the raw file size in Sony A7riii. In Canon, there is Raw, M-Raw and S-Raw. It is not every time, we need to the 42MP raw files. It is an overkill and it takes lots of time to import all the raw files into LR for editing. I wish Sony can provide the option to choose the raw file size.
Dustin Abbott, I think your consistency and integrity along with the history in the Camera industry drives that positivity. They trust you Dustin and believe that you're speaking the truth. Which makes any review worthy of peoples time. Have a good day and again thanks for all of your contributions to the TH-cam and camera community.
Comprehensive and Entertaining delivery. I wont sell my my Mark IV just yet. I have all IS and AF lenses, but i understandi the compelling reasons to add one to your kit, Great Video... I sense you enjoyed that one too.. The few that dislike this video, may either think their A7rIII is perfect, or wont appreciate the rush to get the best second hand dollar on a 5D4. I cannot see any other reason, except of course, the lacking appearance of a bold bow-tie... Hahaha... Thank you Dustin...
One Dollar a month.. Yes you.. Get on patreon and give Dustin support. No better deserving photographic reviewer in the cosmos! These reviews will save you that... hundred fold...
Thanks for that! As a Canon shooter i always admired the A7R bodies. I thought you would like it but that review of you gives no doubt that the mirrorless age has finally started! (unfortunately we needed a „new“ player on the field to give us this technology, the others were too busy making money...)
Hi Dustin, I understand that the EVF of the Sony a7RIII is really relevant when you use manual lenses. But is it still the case when you do low light photography? Indeed, I imagine that in this situation the EVF must have a lot of noise and in this respect should not be as efficient as an optical viewfinder. What do you think about it? Thank you for your reply.
Really nice review, this could be my next camera, unfortunately I live in Faroe Islands where the weather can be challenging, lot of rain and windy conditions, and the weather sealing is said not to be very impressive! Also problem with easily getting stain on the sensor is something that I don’t have with my Pentax K3, hopefully the next version will be better weather sealed. One nice thing with the Pentax K series is that the weather sealing is probably the best out there, which makes it perfect for my environment. Just wish Pentax would be faster updating there cameras, they are not very fast to adept new technologies, so my K3 feels very old now and it’s slow focusing system that is Pentax biggest problem has not gotten much better with the newer cameras!. Like your channel, keep up the good work.
For static subjects, I find MF superior and Sony's MF system has changed that for the better for me, massively. It's great. Also, I literally just ordered my A7RIII from B&H this morning. Whoot whoot!
I'm assuming you refer to the a7RIII, as the a7III has not yet been announced. I don't really have an answer to that yet, as I would have to compare footage side by side with an equivalent lens.
I'm actually surprised how much better it is. I own the a6500, too, and the focus system (which I thought was really good) seems almost primitive by comparison.
Great detailed review Dustin! , I agree with your observations for the most part. I have made the switch from Canon to Sony and now own the a9 and the a7R3. For my needs they are a great combination of camera bodies. I am mostly a Performing Arts and Landscape photographer but also do Architecture, some Environmental Portraits and events. The three things that I find most useful in the Sony system and for which I made the switch are 100% silent shooting mode, EVF and the AF system. There are other things that I really like and like any camera system there are things I don't like so much.
It really is, and it has given me an advantage over some other photographers using Canon 1DX MKIIs and Nikon D5s. I've been able to stay and shoot while they had to take a few quick shots and leave, mostly in quiet art performances.
Hii Dustin! Beautifully narrated details. I would like to know, how much slower with shutter speed you can go with a7riii while using anything 85 mm or longer focal length during portrait photography, before the camera shake starts to blur the image? I highly appreciate & regard your reply! Thanks!
Your problem for shooting portraits is not camera shake with IBIS; it is tiny movements of your subject. You should keep your shutter speed up at least 1/100th second to avoid subject movement.
I still stand that if you OWN a Sony and it is your primary shooter, get Capture One for Sony and use it alongside of LR. I just did some dual editing today. The skin tones out of Capture One are much better than LR.
I can't tell you how much I appreciate your review. I own a Sony a7riii and I'm extremely pleased with the quality of the images I've gotten. I really don't do video, but may give it a go one day due to its popularity. Dustin, I don't have any crop sensor lenses like the sigma 16mm....well these work on the Sony a7riii? Thanks again.
Dustin Abbott thank you very much. Most don't reply back. I'm thinking of the sigma 16mm that's gotten really good reviews. Thanks again. Beautiful pictures you take. You're a true professional, speak very well with class!
Does EVF usable for high contrast landscape scenes? With such a high dynamic range you might over and underexpose your image for PP, but can you actually see what you shoot there?
Great review Dustin. Ive put an order to join with my Canon 5DMKIV. I also have old and quirky lenses as well as old FD and EOS Non Is Tele lenses which Sony A7RIII would be perfect for it :)
Hi dustin, Many thanks for this review, i wanted to know if there is a way to get a budget lens with such camera as i cannot bear the value of any G master lens :/ I still haven’t bought that cam but i think that it is the best cam out there and for me i can buy the best cam but not the best lens. Needed for portrait as i might help my friend for shooting weddings and for travels stills and video) I am currently thinking of buying the 6dii used with g2 tamron lens 70-200 but am still love to have the a7riii Hoping for an advice from ur end Thank u in advance 😊
I had an a7r II and I hated the colors, especially the green skin. Disappointed to hear that it hasn't been fixed in the a7r III. Another concern is the depreciation. I lost a lot money when I sold my camera just 6 months after purchasing it. On forums like FredMiranda I'm already seeing A9s for $3000 and a7rIII for $2800.
Thank you for a great video. just a beginner hobbyist. i wanted to know really just how big of a difference the 42mp vs 24mp resolution has when viewing it on phones or ipads after post production. Considering the photos will be heavily cropped and downsized, (comparing both 42mp & 24 mp photos) will I still be able to notice a difference in sharpness or would that be a hard-to-tell result due to the quality of display screen - which is the likely answer I’ve been reading online. And for such heavily cropped image, will I be seeing a noticeable difference when printing at a size around 20*24 ? I’ve tried to read every reviews out there. It still is hard to grasp with my lack of experience just by reading texts :( Thank you!
Short answer is that you won't see much of a difference on a small screen (though that will depend on how deeply you crop an image). You will likely see a difference in a large print.
Thanks a lot for this entire series. I’m a long time Canon user and I found you the most objective and fair. In fact you made me put the 5dmkiv back into contention and really made look at what type of shooter I am, in the end I have decided to buy the A7riii. Would be great if you could analyze the metabonesV one of these days and more pictures of your cat. Thanks again.
I have owned the a7r2 and now have the a7r3. I also still have and use the Canon 5D3. The biggest negative of mirror less systems as I see it is their susceptibility to attract dust on the sensor. This is a seriously weak Achilles heel especially if you shoot primarily with primes and need to switch lenses regularly.
wonderful review as always. you are becoming one of the best reviewers in my opinion. most of those guys these days just focus on video. like its only a video camera. so thank you so very much. i also have the a7r3 and i absolutely love it. but i am in the same boat as you ive seen dust or even maybe an oil spot. i did compare it to my previews d850 and i found that the d850 has much much better colors. they seem more natural. sony to me are very oversaturated maybe youve noticed that as well?
Trust me man, i hav watched a dozen of video reviews on a7rIII online and your videos on a7rIII itself covers about 120min in total. i really appreciate your work here. hopefullly u'll always have time to do these kinds of review. thanks.
Thanks for the review Dustin! I think I'll probably upgrade from my A7R II, there seems to be enough reasons for me to do so. The one thing that keeps making me hesitate is the disappearance of the apps. They were slow and cumbersome, but they were there if I needed them. Plus, it was nice to be able to record videos for longer than the limit with the hack. But damn, all the rest really makes me want to upgrade. It makes me want to have two bodies, actually, but I can't justify the expense.
Sony's handling of the app store is puzzling. They deleted it without any replacement, leaving some holes in the feature list (like time lapses, for example).
Dustin Abbott If they could just do that, add the lens correction module and an in-camera raw processor, it would be really awesome. (And also remove the recording limit on non-European cameras.)
Thank you. As a user of both Canon, Nikon, and Sony, I can affirm your experience with the A7riii and appreciate your excellent explanations. Shalom uvracha.
Hi ! Currently with nikon D750 and Im looking to get a second camera, with longer lens that can do both stills and videos well. Have a gh5 and gh4 dedicated to video and it's for my second shooter. But can't decided, I want a Sony for mirroless and silence, but no trust with the body menu ect and the extra differently lens... or getting canon for theirs amazing video and stills but same lens problem. Or d850. It's hard. 😁
No to so much shaken, though there are definitely aspects I wish Canon matched (And vice versa). I'm fortunate enough to get to own and use both systems.
After viewing images from the A7r3 I am almost convinced they got the color science right. What would you say Dustin? I am almost questioning my self if I should have got the A7r3 instead of the 5D4. I like my 5D4 but for the same money the Sony A7r3 is very appealing.
Very well done! I’ve got mine for a month and been using it nearly exclusively since. It’s quite amazing that the camera works pretty well with my Commlite adaptor that most of my Nikkor or Nikon mount Sigma Art lenses autofocus quickly and accurately (with eye AF in both AFS and AFC). However, I’ve experienced one quirk that when I’m using m mode and auto ISO at the same time the camera would not let the user know whether the current setting is over exposed or not. Did you experience the same?
Dustin Abbott No this issue is not adapted lens-specific. The same has been experienced when I use my other Sony GM lenses. That said the camera would only inform you of under exposed settings but not otherwise.
Dustin Abbott This issue only shows up when you use both m mode and auto ISO at the same time. No problem whatsoever when you use other modes or dial in ISO manually. Maybe it’s just me being a long time Nikon user which doesn’t have the same quirk. Anyway thanks for your prompt replies!
Steven Lui lens rental took apart an a7riii and extensively examined the weather sealing. The weather sealing is much improved throughout the camera, except one place, the bottom plate. Which confirms that video. For me, I shoot in rain sometimes, which I'm confident the camera will be fine in. I will be very weary of where I set it down, however I always use a strap and when I set it down I put in my bag.
Hello Dustin, I've been tied up for a couple of weeks and just got to watch your last two Sony videos for autofocus and for your long term conclusions. Great videos as always!! I'm hoping to rent one of these and test it out with my Sigma 150-600 C one day. Your videos have me so excited about the camera and it finally seems like there is a FF camera that would make me leave my 7Dmkii for wildlife shooting. The focusing prowess of that camera coupled with the 10fps just hasn't been equaled except for the mighty Canon 1D series. I'm hesitant to just pull the trigger as I want to know more from a wildlife perspective first and especially with my sigma lens attached. I've found one video that covered it a little but it didn't help me much. Do you have any plans on showing this bad boy in wildlife /bird photography situations? There is really nothing out there right now on it.
I will shoot in that situation, but it has to be with the right lens (probably the Sony 100-400). I wouldn't trust an adapted long lens for critical situations right now. It seems the best performance with adapted lenses is wide aperture primes.
Thanks Dustin and that is good news you plan on doing something like that. If when doing it you can get your hands on a 150-600 to test it, even anecdotal, it would go a long way. I've been scouring forums with a lot of people asking about it in my situation but no real responses yet. Also, you might be able to clear something up that would be a game changer for BIF as well. I heard that an adapted lens would only shoot at 3 fps. Is this true? I'm not saying you can't take BIF at 3fps but it sure doesn't promote getting the wing and head position just how you'd like it. As always, thanks again for your great video reviews. I still find no one who puts as much thought and care into their reviews nor do I find anyone else who takes more time to respond and help their followers!!
Thanks and that makes me feel MUCH better. While searching this subject out I watched a video on the focusing with adapted tamron lenses and I think it was the "brotographer" who said it. I instantly said Whoa!
I think it's probably due to the fact that my channel isn't particularly "sensational", so nothing goes viral. My growth has been steady and solid, though.
Hi Dustin what about canon lenses on Sony A7Rlll what is the AF tracking ? I have first version of 1DX and many canon glass. I need second camera for the events canon 1DX will be mine main but I dont have any high res body yet. I could you this cam for portraits instead 1DX
Here's the "ultimate takeaway". Dustin Abbott: "Most of the short-comings that are left in this (Sony mirror-less) camera... I can look at them and say ' uh, I can live with that'". I think that's an utterly fair statement to make... and this is from a Nikon D850 and Nikon D810 owner. I love my primary D850, but having used an A7Rlll over the course of a recent weekend of shooting, I can say that the A7Rlll provided D850 equivalent images, with similar dynamic range, via an electronic viewfinder, and in silent mode via the outstanding EVF. No chimping. It was almost a step into the future of photography, for me, but where A7Rlll users exist today.
I continue to stand by that statement, too. After nearly a year of using the a7R3 now, I continue to think it is a useful camera...not just mirrorless camera.
I own the A7R3 with the GM 24-70 using a Siri Carbon Fiber tripod balances fine and had no issues. I used the siri plate as well as the slightly thinner plate that comes with the Peak Design Clip v2 and although the Siri plate is definitely better I had no problems. Hope this helps
Dustin please do one for a7iii once it launches (probably feb26). A7riii is quite out of my budget but a7iii would fit in perfect. All my glass would be old manual focus stuff (just snagged a Zeiss 28mm f/2.8).
Dustin Abbott I haven’t owned or used the Sony cameras so you would know better than I in terms of comparing the two. For me though with my 85L and 50L I ( and all other lenses ) I use AI Servo with Auto Select AF as my primary focus mode assigned to the shutter half press. For me, with iTR on, this always focuses on the eye even at 1.2. Of course I have had the occasional imperfect shot like one would expect with any tech. This is with my 5DIV and 1DXII
Dustin Abbott Dustin. Just reporting back to say that I was mistaken with my earlier statement. When I first started utilizing this iTR feature more, it’s been with the 1DXII much more so than with the 5DIV. The 1DXII both in practice and in theory seems to have the advantage here due to iTR with face detect as it uses the 360,000 pixel metering sensor to detect the scene vs the 5DIV’s 150,000 pixel sensor. I have done detailed testing comparing these two cameras regarding af previous to this that excluded the iTR / auto select af ability.
Thank you for tip, this strap looks perfect for mirrorless ! I was using Slide Summit Edition until now, but it was better with DSLR, quite too thick for this, resembling of car seatbelt thickness :) ( Also buying R3, used R2 before and tried III also for few days )
I will give Sony this, that their camera bodies as compared up against the competition are much easier and more advanced to shoot with and you do an excellent job explaining this fact, at least for me this is all true......It is their lenses that fall short as far as quality of image and price that draws my attention as compared to the competition, but their camera bodies, no question, they are great.......Another excellent job Dustin.....
hello there. a general question about zooming.Could you tell how to zoom less while viewing pictures, I see the double tap on the screen zooms in 100 %, I mean like half zoom or something. I'm coming from a canon and I want that amount of zoom when I press the Magnifying tool at displaying a picture! thanks
The stabilization seems to work very well (if you put in the right setting for the focal length), but I'm not familiar enough with how the IBIS works to give you a definitive answer to that scenario. I don't think the system works differently than the a7RII - it just works better.
Long glass (telephoto), for one. There are still advantages to an optical viewfinder over an EVF in terms of actually seeing and framing a scene in a variety of conditions. Ergonomics still favor DSLRs.
One of my favorite features about this camera is the manual focus system. I love how it automatically zooms in when I turn the focus ring so I can really dial it in. It makes me actually want to take more manually focused shots now.
That is a very cool aspect of this.
Well done Dustin, i like it how much effort you put into these!
Much appreciated!
You're welcome
With the recent price drop on the a7RIII with the launch of the a7RIV, the a7RIII has become quite compelling. Got one and enjoying it. My a6300 is now the backup or b cam.
Exactly
Thanks, Dustin for your fantastically detailed reviews.
This is my first upgrade from a Canon 550D, which I have been using for what seems like an eternity.
I had looked at getting the A7III and a Tamron 28-75, but after your reviews, I switched to an A7RIII and both the Samyang 35mm & 85mm f/1.4 lenses. It's a little more $ but I'm super excited to have some new tools to shoot with.
Again a big thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Enjoy your new kit!
Well, it is about time these Manufacturer's are showing their appreciation for you.....Well earned.....
Ghost Grown Medicine objective. He remains objective throughout.
i don’t want to buy anything but i still watch your videos because i enjoy watching someone who know what he is talking about , i’m an old fan of your channel dustin just with a new account :)
keep up the stellar work that you do on reviewing these gears 👊🏻
Thanks for the nice feedback.
EXCELLENT review, Dustin. Even better considering we can check out the more specific videos you already made. Best review on this cam to me. Thanks, we appreciate your work.
Thanks for the nice feedback, Jorge.
Brilliant work Dustin, a typical unbiased, comprehensive review from you, very much appreciate all your work, you echo my thoughts exactly, i changed over from many years shooting Canon when the A7r3 came out, I have now sold all my Canon gear and couldn’t be happier with the results.
I'm glad you're happy with the camera.
Superb carefully presented review, as always. I’m just so pleased that, as an a7 series shooter, youtube’s best camera gear reviewer (imo) is covering the FE platform on a regular basis. Thank you Dustin!
Thanks, David!
Thanks.
I still use the RIII all the time and think it remains a very versatile camera.
Thank you for the time, effort and thoroughness you put into these reviews. You are my most trusted youtube camera gear reviewer.
You're welcome.
The best critical review I've watched till now for this camera, or other cameras! beautifully put.
Thanks a lot!
That's high praise. Thank you
Great review as usual. I am learning English from your Reviews.
That's pretty amazing!
Dustin would this camera do well for shooting college sports as well as wildlife? Many call this a great all around camera. It can do multiple things well. Or should I go with the A9?
If you don't need more than 10 FPS or the deeper buffer, the a7R3 is a very nice choice. The a73 is even better for sports.
Pretty awesome to get sharp photos with the 135L at those shutter speeds.
Hi Mr Abott. Great review ! If you had your choice between this camera and an a9 which would it be?
That really depends on your needs. I personally have no interest in the A9 because the burst rate and buffer of the a7R3 is plenty for me, so I prize the higher resolution (and lower price). The opposite may be true for you. I shoot very little sports or action.
Dustin Abbott thank you
Hey Dustin, your video was so useful that now I cant make up my mind whether to get a7riii or any other high end cameras. Does sony a7riii worth the cash? or prolly with the same amount of money I can get a better camera than a7riii? Hope to get good opinions from you as Im getting my a7riii in few days.
I don't know that any equivalent camera offers better value.
If you're in a dusty environment, I do think that the D850 is the better choice.
Superb review again Dustin. You do the most thorough and comprehensive reviews on youtube. You are the reference by which I judge all others. Thank you.
That's high praise, Bella, thank you!
Thanks for the feedback, Mark
My pleasure
This is along with your other videos, the most extensive review of the a7riii. I am excited for your reviews of FE lens especially the Tamron and Sigmas that will be coming out. Thank you for you detailed reviews.
My pleasure. Thanks
Fantastic review. I sent to one of our team. I also told them we can't upgrade until our videos look like yours as you said this was shot on the a6500. Cheers.
Thanks for the nice feedback.
Dustin Abbott Ok! I'll try it out. Thanks!
Yes. The PDAF points on the Sony cover a large part of the frame but don't cover most of the edges. At the edges you only have contrast detect AF. The A9 has PDAF on the whole frame though.
Hard to complain here, though, as the focus system is pretty fab!
Thanks
Hi Trevor, all I can say is that my a7RIII is the camera body I reach for most out of my 5 bodies. I'd definitely buy another.
Great review, as always. What are your thoughts of the Sony, as a system? Lenses, flashes etc.
That will take more time, as I become more familiar with the system. I'm starting with 3 of the primary 50mm options for my next project.
Regarding being stuck with FF stills shooting on the A7R3, I have assigned the FF/APS-C toggle to the joy stick button, allowing me to immediately toggle between them as I often do shooting birds. I love that ability.
I assigned it to a button, too, and often use the different framing - particularly when shooting events where I don't need the higher resolution.
I’m going to order one soon :) which lens will you recommend to get first for general photography, family etc.. 35 1.4 or 50 1.4 Sony ?
Wow, I'm pretty new to the system, so that's a tough call. My next project that I've just started is a review of the top 3 50mm options for FE, though, so stay tuned.
Dustin Abbott I will :) can’t wait for that to be honest. Keep up the good work 👍 thanks
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks Dustin, great advice as always , I will consider:)
Thanks for the review. May I ask you what lens have you used on the A6500 for this video? The image quality looks stunning on my screen.
The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DN. It's a very nice video lens.
Hello Dustin , thanks for the wonderful review . How do you compare the video autofocus of the r3 and the 6500? . My 6500 seems to focusing faster , I’m really surprised about that .
Hmmm, I'm finding the autofocus performance better all around on the a7R3. The face tracking is smoother, too.
Hi Dustin, which adapter do you use to mount your Canon lenses on the Sony a7RIII? Does your adapter work well? Thank you for your reply.
I cover adapters in some detail in another video. I primarily use the Sigma MC-11 adapter.
I didn't experience the freezing issue, but definitely the sensor dust issue. A blower seemed to work for me.
such a fluent review. i've listened/watched in just one breath. thank you Dustin.
That's great praise. Thanks
you are welcome
I agree, there is no option to choose the raw file size in Sony A7riii. In Canon, there is Raw, M-Raw and S-Raw. It is not every time, we need to the 42MP raw files. It is an overkill and it takes lots of time to import all the raw files into LR for editing. I wish Sony can provide the option to choose the raw file size.
Would be nice.
Dustin, I value your opinion most of all the reviewers out there. Thx for the input.
That's high praise. Thank you!
Very honest and comprehensive review with substance - thank you.
My pleasure.
Only you could've done this review so masterfully. Like always great work Dustin.
Thanks, Michael. People seem pretty positive about the end result.
I suspect that when Canon finally launched full frame mirrorless it will be pretty good.
Thank you so much Dustin for your very informative and detailed review of the a7RIII , God bless you!
Glad it was helpful!
To be honest I haven't seen it to be an issue. Even shooting astro.
My pleasure!
For static subjects, I find MF superior and Sony's MF system has changed that for the better for me, massively. It's great.
Also, I literally just ordered my A7RIII from B&H this morning. Whoot whoot!
Enjoy. It's a great camera.
What a wonderful review !!! Excellent job sir.
Thank you!
Dustin do you like the video better on the a6500 or a7iii
I'm assuming you refer to the a7RIII, as the a7III has not yet been announced. I don't really have an answer to that yet, as I would have to compare footage side by side with an equivalent lens.
I got mine since 2000 its my present on my birthday until Now 2022 shes kicking ass !!
I'm a little confused by this comment, but you seem happy :)
How good is the Sony with Canon glass? most importnat for 16-35 2.8 iii and 24-70 2.8 ii, and any issue with corner performance and AF?
I haven't seen any real corner issues. AF performance varies from lens to lens.
Great review how does the focusing compare with the a6500 which is my current camera
The silent mode is genuinely useful.
It really is, and it has given me an advantage over some other photographers using Canon 1DX MKIIs and Nikon D5s. I've been able to stay and shoot while they had to take a few quick shots and leave, mostly in quiet art performances.
Would you recommend a7 iii or 1dx ii for run and gun filmmaking, and also photos, so hybrid?
If filmmaking is your priority, I think the a73 may be the better choice.
Dustin Abbott thank you
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you very much!
I still stand that if you OWN a Sony and it is your primary shooter, get Capture One for Sony and use it alongside of LR. I just did some dual editing today. The skin tones out of Capture One are much better than LR.
I'll give it a spin at some point, but once I've gotten the custom profiles set up in Adobe I'm pretty happy with the results.
They will, in APS-C/Super 35 mode. They work very well, actually, though you get 18 MP of resolution instead of 42 (still plenty for many situations).
I've found a few scenes so bright that it was a little hard to visualize, but only around the extremes.
Great review Dustin. Ive put an order to join with my Canon 5DMKIV. I also have old and quirky lenses as well as old FD and EOS Non Is Tele lenses which Sony A7RIII would be perfect for it :)
It really is fun to bring out those old lenses and give them new life. Sometimes they surprise you!
Hi dustin,
Many thanks for this review, i wanted to know if there is a way to get a budget lens with such camera as i cannot bear the value of any G master lens :/
I still haven’t bought that cam but i think that it is the best cam out there and for me i can buy the best cam but not the best lens.
Needed for portrait as i might help my friend for shooting weddings and for travels stills and video)
I am currently thinking of buying the 6dii used with g2 tamron lens 70-200 but am still love to have the a7riii
Hoping for an advice from ur end
Thank u in advance 😊
I haven't used it yet, but a lot of people think the 85mm f/1.8 lens is great value for money.
Excellent review. Very detailed and informative.
My pleasure.
I think the depreciation on Sony's is helped along by the fact that Sony tends to release new models faster than everyone else.
It still is hard to grasp with my lack of experience just by reading texts :(
Thank you!
Short answer is that you won't see much of a difference on a small screen (though that will depend on how deeply you crop an image). You will likely see a difference in a large print.
Thank you for the reply. Guess it comes down to my personal user experience in the end. You have amazing contents, I'll be subscribing! :)
Hi, i am about to switch from canon to Sony... does lightroom 6 (perpetual licence) support ARW Sony raw files for both A7Riii and A7iii?
Thank’s
I don't know the answer to that, as I use the CC subscription model.
I've got the Metabones review scheduled. I'm first tackling a project with the three top 50mm options for Sony FE that I've already gotten started on.
I’m afraid that seems to be the case.
wonderful review as always. you are becoming one of the best reviewers in my opinion. most of those guys these days just focus on video. like its only a video camera. so thank you so very much. i also have the a7r3 and i absolutely love it. but i am in the same boat as you ive seen dust or even maybe an oil spot. i did compare it to my previews d850 and i found that the d850 has much much better colors. they seem more natural. sony to me are very oversaturated maybe youve noticed that as well?
I elected to go with the "Light" profile in camera and it produces less oversaturated results.
the content of this video is so packed and informative, its like watching a full 1 hr long review. haha
Wow...I'd hate to put in the work of a review that long!!
Trust me man, i hav watched a dozen of video reviews on a7rIII online and your videos on a7rIII itself covers about 120min in total. i really appreciate your work here. hopefullly u'll always have time to do these kinds of review. thanks.
We think alike on what Sony needs to fix but all in all a hell of a camera I love it. Great review!
Thanks!
Dustin Abbott I know, if only they just added an intervalometer in the shooting modes or something.
Exactly. It's like they forgot to put it in there!
Dustin Abbott If they could just do that, add the lens correction module and an in-camera raw processor, it would be really awesome. (And also remove the recording limit on non-European cameras.)
That would be nice. I'm hoping that something could be added via firmware.
Thank you. As a user of both Canon, Nikon, and Sony, I can affirm your experience with the A7riii and appreciate your excellent explanations. Shalom uvracha.
It's always nice when real users of the cameras can relate to my conclusions.
We love ya!
Or d850. It's hard. 😁
Great reviews on the A7R III. Has Sony shaken your devotion to Canon or will you remain faithful to your old standby?
No to so much shaken, though there are definitely aspects I wish Canon matched (And vice versa). I'm fortunate enough to get to own and use both systems.
After viewing images from the A7r3 I am almost convinced they got the color science right. What would you say Dustin? I am almost questioning my self if I should have got the A7r3 instead of the 5D4. I like my 5D4 but for the same money the Sony A7r3 is very appealing.
It's getting there, particularly if you apply a few tweaks.
I don't remember seeing that issue. It could be adapter specific.
Dustin Abbott No this issue is not adapted lens-specific. The same has been experienced when I use my other Sony GM lenses. That said the camera would only inform you of under exposed settings but not otherwise.
Hmm, maybe I just missed it then.
You said that there is only one Raw size, but what do you get when you switch to Crop mode? Is the Raw file still 42MP, I'm confused with this a bit?
No, it is 18 MP, but it is cropped (1.5x APS-C), and the framing has changed.
So the Raw file is 18MP in this case....thanks for quick replay, I do enjoy your reviews!
I sold my A73, thinking to buy an A74 or A7R3 or A9 when COVID is over. Very detail review.
I'm glad to help out.
I don't think that is true. I've not seen a slowdown with adapted lenses.
Thanks and that makes me feel MUCH better. While searching this subject out I watched a video on the focusing with adapted tamron lenses and I think it was the "brotographer" who said it. I instantly said Whoa!
Very high quality review.. Not much room for haters and trolls.
There will be a few creep in...I have no doubt :)
That you don’t have a significantly larger subscriber base is a mystery. Oh well!
Keep up the excellent work!
I think it's probably due to the fact that my channel isn't particularly "sensational", so nothing goes viral. My growth has been steady and solid, though.
Excellent review..Thank you
You're welcome.
Hi Dustin what about canon lenses on Sony A7Rlll what is the AF tracking ? I have first version of 1DX and many canon glass. I need second camera for the events canon 1DX will be mine main but I dont have any high res body yet. I could you this cam for portraits instead 1DX
For portraits it will work. Not so much for action.
Dustin, Thank you, brilliant review, you have helped me made my mind up. Excellent
Enjoy your new camera. My a7R3 is my favorite of my current crop of cameras.
As always, great review.
Thanks!
I was wondering how does this small camera balance on a tripod when used with a lens like the 24-70 GM?
I haven't used that lens, per se, but others of similar size and weight, and it hasn't been an issue that I've see.
Thanks a lot, very helpful :)
You are the king of photography Equipment review world!!
Wow! Is there some kind of salary that comes with that? :)
@@DustinAbbottTWI I wish!!
Dustin please do one for a7iii once it launches (probably feb26). A7riii is quite out of my budget but a7iii would fit in perfect. All my glass would be old manual focus stuff (just snagged a Zeiss 28mm f/2.8).
I'll try to take a look at one down the road, but I've got a number of commitments already.
Dustin Abbott that means more photography reviews? 😉
Can't wait for Sigma 14-24 2.8 review.
Should be an interesting lens.
If you want to look at what the colors look like outside Adobe, you can just use the in-camera JPEG for comparison, couldn't you?
I did, actually, and didn't find they looked much different.
Hey Dustin, I just want to add that the Canon iTR is eye af. It works perfectly with auto select af at 1.2 at basically any useful distance.
That's true to an extent, though they are not identical technologies.
Love your VIDEOS.
Thank you!
Thank you for tip, this strap looks perfect for mirrorless ! I was using Slide Summit Edition until now, but it was better with DSLR, quite too thick for this, resembling of car seatbelt thickness :)
( Also buying R3, used R2 before and tried III also for few days )
The Slide Lite is definitely the strap for the A7R series.
I'm coming from a canon and I want that amount of zoom when I press the Magnifying tool at displaying a picture! thanks
If you will use the scroll wheel next to the EV wheel you can adjust in and out.
hello again . i mean when i firstly press the magnifying not to zoom that much.
im not talking while im " in the zoom section"
@@filipposSioupoulis Have you checked the manual?
@@DustinAbbottTWI yep didnt see anything. i hope it works
I would recommend you reach out to Sony, then.
Great review Dustin.
Thanks
do manual vintage lenses still get 3 axis ibis in video like on the a7r2? or 5 axis?
The stabilization seems to work very well (if you put in the right setting for the focal length), but I'm not familiar enough with how the IBIS works to give you a definitive answer to that scenario. I don't think the system works differently than the a7RII - it just works better.
"I do think there are still advantages for DSLRs.." - interested to hear which ones for example? Thanks!
Long glass (telephoto), for one. There are still advantages to an optical viewfinder over an EVF in terms of actually seeing and framing a scene in a variety of conditions. Ergonomics still favor DSLRs.
Dustin abbot is the Best expert reviewer
