- You can't be blamed for watching Steven Universe and thinking that, just maybe, Pearl used to belong to White Diamond. A white-skinned Gem with her gem in her forehead? What does Steven Universe want you to think, anyway?
Well, White Diamond doesn't need a Pearl to feel superior to; the only reason she ended up with one was to punish Pink, and to give her a more sensible one-that is to say, one that was just as rigid as she was. It's a good thing for Steven Universe that White failed on that one too, because Pearl turned out to be more than she could have ever imagined.

I felt like it was really clear that our Pearl was made by the other Diamonds for Pink. Her mixed color scheme and personality traits line up with each of the other Diamonds; them wanting her to guide Pink the way THEY would. That's why Pearl is "stuffy" or "no fun," cause she wasn't made with any of Pinks essence like her OG Pearl was.
I think it's likely Pink just went with default Pearl because making her pink would make her look like her old Pearl. And honestly a Pearl isn't supposed to guide the diamond in their society, just be their servent to make them happy. Pearl being more stuffy is her being allowed to be who she really is on Earth and choosing to be the responsible one. Parenting is hard, and isn't always fun and doesn't always make everyone happy and Pearl sort of plays parent for both Steven and Amethyst a lot of the time.
Steven universe fans are weirdass because they like to reach to the deepest corners of the universe and find confirmation that Pearl was once White's. Even Pearl herself mentioned that she was made FOR Pink. She had never served anyone else prior because her only purpose of existence was to watch over Pink. Her gem placement is probably a nod to the theory that smart Gems have forehead gems.
Actually, that's a good point. Pear isn't a white pearl she's a polychrome pearl. In fact, she has one of the most diverse color schemes of any Crystal Gem. Most are only shade variations of one color.
This also explains why Pearl has so many abilities that, as far as we can tell, other pearls don't. If a Pearl is basically designed to just serve as it's superior Gem's general servant, the fact ours not only comes with a weapon, but has piloting skills, is a bit odd. Homeworld is very big into "single gem, single function" if a gem needs a pilot, that's what Nephrites are for (or Emeralds for bigger ships.) Need a guard, there are Jaspers, Amethysts Agates Rubies, etc.
Given how volatile Pink Diamond was, I think the others made her that way becuase, not only did Pink need a guide, but she also needed something more like a valet than a regular maid, someone who could do pretty much ANYTHING since they couldn't count on Pink to be "sensible" and take her entourage with her when needed. Pearl needed to be EVERYTHING, her servant, her chauffeur, AND her bodyguard.

In the movie, we see that the "default" customization option is selected for Pearl, which would explain why her original outfit has all four colors. Therefore, her white skin can be ruled out as evidence towards the Pearl Swap theory
I was thinking maybe she was kind of modelled in the image after what a pearl would look like if White Diamond made one. After all, the gem is on the forehead as white's would be and it would've been white who demanded that a new pearl was made for Pink. But I think what you're saying makes more sense. In which case, I would rationalise that her gem is in her forehead because, as white puts it, "I'm every colour of the light!"
The default pearl is a multicoloured pearl, because she is not given any colour in particular. She has no flaws to soak up colours in her spectrum. She may not be controlled by white, or have ever served white, but she was created to be quiet and obedient and deferent like the perfect goody two shoes little pearl would be. What white didn't count on is a gem's ability to learn, grow and change over time~
Which is exactly what leads to her downfall.

I think Pearl had her gem placement in her forehead because White believed that Pink needed to be supervised by someone like herself, so knowing that gem placement influences the personality of a gem, she gave her a pearl with a forehead gem.

@@Nachullyy yeah but the placement of the gem doesn't correlate that they are the default form of a gem. Take Amethyst for example, she took on multiple forms when reforming during season 1 and not once did she moved her to another part of her body. Even Pink Diamond didn't. Although she moved the orientation of her gem, it doesn't mean she moved it somewhere else besides her belly button. Yes, it is the default form of a pearl but, any pearl could've just as easily have their gem somewhere else whilst looking the same.

I think Pearl was definitely made to serve only Pink BUT she was made it the image of White Diamond just like how Pink’s first Pearl and Blue’s and Yellow’s are. All of the Pearls are created from the image of their diamond, and because White was unhappy with Pink’s behavior and (seems to) think of herself as the perfect image of a diamond, it would make sense for her to send her a reflection of herself as a way to “correct” Pink.

Ehh not really, plenty of gems in Pink's court must've seen her when she was with Pink and still couldn't connect that she is the renegade pearl. Changing forms seems to be enough to seem like a different gem entirely so no one had a reason to think further than "she's a really fancy pearl" like Peridot

making this comment about 3 minutes into the video. despite rainbow pearl being made FOR pink, I'm fairly confident she was mostly made BY white diamond, the similarity in a sense could be considered "genetic". also pearl's insecurities seem to stem from self-worth, which seems connected to how white diamond views her self-worth as the biggest deal ever.

Based on another comment I saw (and my interpretation of it), White Diamond was likely the one to order Pear so it was made in her image, either because the machine just like automatically bases their appearance of the gem that gives the order, or perhaps to serve as a constant reminder for Pink Diamond, feeling like a part of White Diamond is always there or at least try to guide her in the direction that White Diamond would want by having a similar mindset to hopefully influence her

It makes the most sense to me that she was made with aspects of all four diamonds-- or possibly all but pink-- but mostly white. The color palette backs this up as well as the gem placement and her personality. Although she loved Pink, she wasn't that much like her and admired those traits she didn't have.
Pearl has self-worth insecurities as another commenter said, which reflects White's powers. She also tends to have a bit of a superiority complex (e.g. Her tendency to never outright apologize) which could potentially be aspects of any but I think it could be White. She's more inherently sentimental, emotional, logical, and petty (blue, blue, yellow, yellow) than fun-loving and imaginative. While her rebel streak could be argued as more Pink essence, I think it's more her loyalty and love for Pink that got that ball rolling. So I think she was made mostly with White's essence (gem placement, white skin and gem), equal but lesser parts Blue (blue eyes) and Yellow (pinkish orange hair), and maybe just a tiny bit of Pink (pinkish orange hair). The reasoning for so much of White's essence being that White thought Pink's new pearl would need some extra "perfection" to keep Pink more in line.
This was my theory since finishing the series anyways. The Pearl Swap theory is definitely interesting but while it's possible, there's nothing definitive and I just don't think it'd be the case. Unless White specifically didn't want a fully white Pearl for some reason but I'm having trouble justifying that. She was a big part of making her but I don't think Pearl served under White, or was ever meant to serve White. As for the "default customization settings" I don't think that would change the colors much. Not any more than reforming would anyways.

In the movie, Pearl is on her second rejuvination (the song after she reforms says she's Pearl 3.0 meaning there have been two earlier versions of her.) This means either there was a time period between Pink losing her first Pearl and gaining her second that Rose remembered but Pearl couldn't due to being rejuvenated, which while an interesting idea is less likely than the second option. It is far more likely that Pearl 1.0 had a different owner, and when white took Pinks original Pearl, Pearl was rejuvenated and taken to the pearl customization place, and customized to what the other Diamonds thought Pink needed in a Pearl. Given White does not appear to have another Pearl, being the only Diamond seemingly not to have one, and Pearls similarities to White, there is a good chance there was a Pearl swap.
That's a good theory, but I still remember there being one episode in the first or second season where Steven, playing with a sword, stabs her and she has to reform (making her reformed version Pearl 2.0)
@@radioactivepower600nanaspersec We know Pearl was poofed many times in the war protecting Rose, and for that matter at least twice in during the show before Pearl 3.0 (during the episodes Steven the Sword Fighter and Together Alone) so we can assume poofing does not count as an entirely new version. Instead, Pearl getting poofed in season 1 would have been like her going from Pearl 2.100 to 2.101.

See the issue with there being no Pearl swap is that it implies White Diamond doesn't have her own Pearl. Think about it, all the other Diamonds have their own Pearls but White doesn't seem to have her own White Pearl, she only has a mind-controlled Pink Pearl that she stole from Pink Diamond after Pink Diamond broke her.
If Our Pearl isn't White Diamond's original Pearl and we don't see any Pearl who seems to be originally made for White Diamond, then that's weird. It implies White didn't have a Pearl of her own until she stole Pink's Pearl but that's weird. Why wouldn't White have her own Pearl? Why did she need to steal Pink's Pearl? Why couldn't she just make her own?
She's the most powerful Gem of all, you'd think if the other Diamonds have Pearls that are theirs then she should have one too.

White claims that she's the most powerful a'd capable gem. She is perfect in everyway. She wouldn't want someone else to do her job and possibly mess it up, when she could do it perfectly herself
Even if she wasn't made for White, it is possible her appearance was very much on purpose, likely White's choice, so Pink could not escape White's "presence" (figuratively). So just to have a psychological effect.
Maybe remind her what happened to her previous Pearl (who looked more like herself and thus was "closer" to her own self-expression), so she behaves properly with this one, who will remind her of an authority figure in her life to some extend.

I had never even heard of that theory before. It never even crossed my mind. I had just assumed that Pearl was created for Pink after Pink Pearl was confiscated. Specifically, I figured that, by the time Pink Diamond was allowed a Pearl again, White Diamond had become possessive over Pink Pearl, so she gave Pink Diamond a new Pearl instead.

I still like to head canon that Pearl originally belonged to White, but when White took Pink Pearl away from her. She rejuvenated her own Pearl because she thought she would be more sensible for her. The only line you'd have to change is the "I'm older than you"

I think Pearl was probably made with a larger proportion of white diamonds essence, which is the reason for her skin tone being white.
The mind gem placement was probably custom selected by white when she ordered Pearl to be made as she’d want a Pearl less like pink Pearl and more like herself.
(I remember hearing from somewhere that gem placements reflect a gems personality)

I honestly think our pearl being just custom for pink is a way less interesting reality. I know gem placement is arbitrary, but the choice to make the 3 out of 4 pearls match feels too intentional for the last one to be white, have her gem placement, but she's just a new pearl.
This is the type of thing where there's a crew members response is interesting to see, but It probably wouldn't shift my thoughts

I imagine Volleyball was created for Pink. But at some point, as we learned from the episode "Volleyball" Pink broke her Pearl (PP). I think this was the reason why she got Pearl (THE Pearl we get to know in the seria). An interesting detail, tho; most Gems have one set of colour as suit (⚪🟨🟦or🩷) and not any other really. But our Pearl had blue and yellow present in greater amount of her dresd, which makes me think she was a present from eithet all 3, or just the "lower" 2 of the Diamonds. And I can imagine, instead of a swap, after dammaging Pink Pearl, Pink Diamond simply got a new pearl, and the old one was simply used by White
I hadn't noticed the Pearl swap signs. Thinking about it, though, I do think that White made our Pearl a lot more like herself than like pink, though. Blue's pearl is really somber, like she is, and Yellow's pearl is brash and demanding like her diamond, but our Pearl has always been a lot more methodical and organized than Pink/Rose. I think that, and pearl's adaptability and more multicolored aesthetic, plus her gem position, come from the fact that she was designed *for* Pink, but she was designed *by* White. So Pearl is what White thinks the perfect servant for Pink is, while the other Pearls are what their owners thought the perfect pearls for them were.
The idea of rejuvenation doesn't help against it either, I'll say both are still possible at least in headcanon. It's possible that White simply had that pearl made by her interests, and it's also possible White just reset her pearl and handed her to Pink. I can still see white doing either so I'm not one to complain. Either way I wouldn't imagine Pearl to have any distinct memories of White so to put it in the best of terms, she belongs to no one

I believe Pink has the ability to command like she did pearl in general, that she could do this to other gems. Infact, in the episode "the answer", Rose told Garnet to never question who she was. And we later hear that explained when Ruby and sapphire unfused when it was revealed she was pink.
Pink used that ability on pearl, and garnet. She has that power as pink diamond.
She could therefore do it on any pearl, and thus would mean

3:20 this can easily be explained away by the movie, where, when pearl rejuvenated there was a whole sequence about her customization, this does not happen with other gems, therefore diamonds can't give them commands like they do their pearls. In suf, volleyball literally states that she's older than Pearl which is more than enough to debunk the pearl switch theory, I still hc that they switched tho

I always assumed she was the "default" pearl, because iirc there were customization options in the pearl/volleyball episode in SUF, and that White made default pearls in her image. The pearl swap theory always was a pet peeve of mine though lol.
The reason of her skin being white is white light has also blue yellow and pink light. You might think that we should get something like pale yellow when you mix yellow and white light but that's how it works on dye colors not on light colors.

After they fused, they even say that Pearl and Pink Pearl have a better understanding of *their* Diamond. Implying that Pink Pearl is Pink Diamond's Pearl, or you know, used to be.
And Pearl not remembering White Diamond can be explained by the fact that she's probably been rejuvenated before being given to Pink.
And maybe her especially bad feeling about White comes from her subconscious, from a time she doesn't even remember herself.

In the movie we see that even after rejuvenated; All gems keep their *gem* in the same place it always is. It's very possible that White had a pearl but didn't really need it. So when taking away the Pink Pearl, White just gave her the Pearl she had but never used.
I still think they swapped because of the movie song "system/BOOT.PearlFinal(3).Info". It has "(3)" for PearlFinal meaning she has made a final form three times and booted to her "owners"

She had default custom options when she was still in shell form and didn't made a Final. The diamonds decided with default look (that was seen in Now We're Only Falling Apart).
I had thought this as well. But if the crew has said she wasn't then that simply is how it is no matter how cool it would've been. I've seen another comment mention here that PearlFinal(1) could've just been some random pearl that was taken to the shell and customized further.

As for the crew thing, I think the file name and number are very plausible. It wouldn't make sense if the "(3)" was there for no reason. The random pearl theory doesn't make much sense to me.

I always figured that our Pearl was originally intended for White Diamond, but she was left in the backburner because she didn't actually need or wanted a pearl. Then Pink Diamond damaged her own pearl so she was given our Pearl based after White Diamond's image. The other Pearls match their Diamond's personality, and our Pearl's neurotic and controling nature seem to mostly match White Diamond.

In the movie with Spinnel, it's possible to 'reset' a gem. White diamond's pearl couldve gone through this. So that would explain why Pink could give orders and why the space suit was aligned with Pink.
I still like the idea of our Pearl originally belonging/being made for White better tbh and since there's nothing to concretely disprove it in canon, that'll be my interpretation of Pearl's origins. Not to mention that to me the whole Pink/Pearl relationship was already icky enough, adding to it that she was literally made for Pink makes it worse in my eyes so I like to discard it.

I mean, if the creators say there was no pearl swap then it didn't happen. However this is how I viewed it, White views herself as perfect and thus not needing a pearl. So she can give the perfect pearl, hers, to the most flawed diamond, pink, to make her fall in line, and then she can just control the flawed pearl and make her perfect
maybe Pinks second Pearl was made specifically for Pink, but ob purpose had more of Whites influence "baked into her" so that this new Pearl would've the desired effect on Pink. And that's why she resembles how a Pearly made for White would look like.
My theory is that Pink had no regard for this Pearl in the beginning, seeing what happened to Pink Pearl, and simply chose to leave her as default when given the choice to customize her. Seeing that it was confirmed that White is personally involved with the making of Pearls, I think it makes sense that the default would be white and have a forehead gem.

The pearl swap theory made sense at first and then made less and kess sense as we learned more about the diamonds and gems in general and then was completely implausible after the final episodes where they reach Homeworld.
With what little we knew originally, it was possible that Pearl maybhave belonged to White oeiginally, especially when we learned about Pinks original pearl, but once we understood White Diamond more, it didn't make sense for her to even have had a pearl in the first place. She clearly didn't need one and seemed to really have no desire for one until after she became a recluse.
Now that we know the circumstances that lead to Pink losing Volleyball, it makes more sense that each of the diamonds contiebuted to our Pearl's creation, especially since none of them really trusted Pink with her own colony. If White wanted to swap pearls, she would've used our pearl as a spy by just mind controlling her. But we also learned that White didn't need a spy since she was always aware that Pink and Rose were the same person.
So there's really just no reason for a pearl swap to have happened
My theory was always that Pearl had served Pink Diamond. Then, as the show went on, when Zircon suggested that only someone like a pearl could have gotten close enough to shatter Pink Diamond, I took that as confirmation both that Pearl had served Pink Diamond, and that the secret Pearl was keeping was that she had been the one to shatter Pink Diamond, rather than it having been Rose Quartz. Of course, only one of those things happened to be true lol.
“we can’t look to the show for clarity” we can. pearl was obsessed with rose, in all flashbacks we see of her, even moreso. it wasn’t because of rose leading the gems like the others it was, stalker -esc. pearl didn’t really see rose for who rose was, only what she dreamed her to be. that obsession never went to the next leader of the crystal gems, it didn’t go to steven, it lived and died with her diamond. it was designed. and not only is this blatantly spelled out in the movie, but there are numerous hints that make sense with how she talks about her. even as she started getting more romantic involvement, she never got the same dutiful unhealthy obsession she had with pink diamond or rose.
sources, when she started trining connie, any flashbacks where she sparred against greg, the musical episode mr greg, steven universe future the movie, the episode we learn rose and pink are the same person. pearl was made for rose.

I only came to this vid after watching the episode in SU Future where pink pearl remarks that she’s older than pearl. I have a theory that this could mean one of two things:
- Our Pearl was created after the original Pink Pearl. This highly supports the idea that the pearls were never swapped to begin with and that our Pearl was truly created only for Pink after the incident with Pink Pearl.
- Our Pearl was rejuvenated and actually swapped with Pink Pearl. Think of it this way - when the gems rejuvenated, they had no recollection of their former selves. It’s quite possible that when a gem is rejuvenated, their age also resets. It’s quite possible that Pink Pearl knew our Pearl was rejuvenated and therefore “younger” than her even though they may actually be the same age. (I believe that Pink Pearl was never rejuvenated, hence her abilities to recall her memories of Pink. It’s quite possible that Pearl might’ve suffered the same treatment as Pink Pearl - complete mind control - if she was ever owned by white and possibly rejuvenated for absolutely no reason other than to reset her for pink). Rejuvenation could also explain the customization of pearls outfit for pink while still retaining features that specifically make her look like a white Pearl and as another comment pointed out, could explain the “3” mentioned when Pearl rejuvenated during the movie.
Personally, based on the video, comments from the crewniverse, and the way the line was worded in the episode, I highly believe the first of my two theories is probably correct. (Which leaves the question of why white diamond would never have a Pearl until taking Pinks Pearl).
I know Pearl swap isn’t true, but personally I really do like to headcanon it because it gives an interesting dynamic

I think they did swap, maybe because pink diamond felt so bad for pink pearl when she did that to her eye so she wanted to swap. When pink diamond got her colony she and pearl didn’t get along that well, pearl looked more shy, even though they should’ve known each for a long time. In the movie the title says 3.0 if you think about it the first time was when she was created and shown to white, then she swapped and shown to pink and then to Greg which is the third time. And that she could only take an order like that from her diamond is true, but she totally forgot her past which makes pink her first diamond. Steven’s flashback also shows volleyball with pink diamond and they look like they’re getting really along and know each other. She wanted her colony which, but didn’t get on then she hurt volleyball (pink pearl), then when she has her colony we see only OG pearl so I guess after she hurt volleyball she and white switched.

I don’t believe there was a “Pearl swap”, but I do think White Diamond is the one who ordered our Pearl, and thats why she has White Diamond’s gem placement and white skin.

Pink had her own that was taken by white and our pearl is a "gift" from white but she's basic and default which white sees as bad but pink sees as a blank slate to be molded into whatever pearl wants to be herself
my theory is that white never had a pearl, pink pearl used to be pink diamonds pearl and was swapped out for a ‘more sensible pearl’ because she believed pink pearl was a bad influence on pink diamond. pearl was made specifically for pink diamond, but was made to be more like white diamond so she could balance out pink’s chaotic personality. and i think the reason why white diamond kept pink pearl is simply to enact a weird punishment on her. why else would white diamond need a pearl, especially one as cutesy and fun as pink pearl, other than to puppet around a gem who stepped out of line.

my response to folks saying 'why did she take pink's pearl then if she didn't have a pearl before?' is simple Parental Emotional Abuse. losing her pearl was a punishment. white diamond would absolutely parade her around simply to rub it in and Make Pink Learn Her Lesson. white diamond wanted her to know that she was being punished. for the record im slightly skeptical about the line of argument that pearl is only pink's because pearl is the only gem that can be commanded by pink. it seems garnet was commanded by pink to not ask questions and the only times she breaks that rule are when the crew admitted to making a mistake. but i definitely agree that pearl was made for pink. my interpretation of the (3) in the movie is one i haven't seen here -- i assumed the diamonds did a beta version to make sure she was made with the right personality to "guide" pink. then when they were satisfied they reformed her, maybe to give the illusion that they hadn't been messing around with pearl's programming prior to giving her to pink.
Nothing in this world will ever make me believe that our pearl was made for pink…. There are only 4 pearls in the whole show and each one has a gem placement corresponding to their respective diamond… if our pearl was “made” for pink, why wasn’t her gem placed on her stomach? I will always believe tiara she was originally made for white diamond but was deemed “defective” because of her colors.. same as how pink was deemed defective because of her size.

In the film when pearl is rebooted, the clam says "pearl system reboot 3" (I think even her song in the scene has the same name) since greg was owner three and her previous owner was pink, somebody else was the original owner, since pearls are luxury acessories they are made to match the gem placement of the gem they're designed to, they can take upon the appearance of the owner by customization, but gem placement can't be changed, also you know what else has all colors? White light, it's a mixture of all light colors together, defract that and you will have any color you like, plus would it be so out of character for the diamonds to just replaced pink's damaged pearl by one of theirs as a cover up for the tantrum of a spoiled child? When blue and yellow saw pink pearl in the ball they were in horror, maybe afraid of exposing their secret to other gems, and pearl would need to have her memory wiped, otherwise she would remember seeing pink pearl damaged by pink's abuse, maybe she wasn't white's, but she was definitely somebody else's, that little tiny detail I first mentioned debunks your whole theory
The pearl swap theory is honestly not for discussion unless you want it as a headcannon. Pearl was never white’s and specifically made for pink. However, the creation of pearls are indeed connected to white diamond. White diamond created the reef on her 5th colony (as said by one of the makers). So it makes sense as to why pearls default design has her gem in her forehead. If she was customized, her gem would be place elsewhere and look more like pink. Our pearl’s design is the default. So she’s gonna represent white originally.

I'm gonna be honest, even if the intention of the creators is that Pearl was made to be Pink's it doesn't make sense.
Why is she white? Why does she have all the colors like White Diamond does? Why is her gem at her forehead and not belly? Why is shethe one to talk about White Diamond to Steven?
I also don't understand this idea that White doesn't need a Pearl. No one "needs" Pearls, Pearls don't really do anything other gems can't, their role in gem society is of status, being essentially "trophy wives." If White is at the top of the hierarchy, in fact, the one controlling it, why doesn't she have one? Why doesn't she have multiple Pearls? Why is her only Pearl the one Pink broke?
soo my theory was that either there was a pearl swap orr the original pink's pearl was damaged (and as we saw she couldn't be fixed) so maybe pink asked white to spare her so white took her in and made pink another one thats why our pearl is white
