To anyone who hasn't watched it yet, do so asap. Absolutely amazing television. Alicent has grown to be my second favorite character, second only to King Viserys. Hope you enjoy this video as it was quite fun to make.

Both sides are right. Both sides have faults. But I am team green. The moment Alicent spoke of "Where is duty, where is sacrifice?", she is absolutely right. Rhaenyra, no matter how unfortunate her circumstance becomes in the end, you cannot deny that she played her cards poorly. She had been dealt a great hand yet failed to see how doing as she pleased would end up as her downfall. Alicent, despite the terrible hand she was dealt, rose up and everything she has done was out of duty, out of the necessity to protect her children and house, and in a way, for the good of the realm. When Viserys was sick and dying she ruled in his stead long with his small council while Rhaenyra was nowhere in sight. She has sacrificed so much and truly, deep down, you can see she has no desire for bloodshed and hesitates or outright rejects whenever the option of murder is presented.
Rhaneyra was nowhere on site because the Hightower ruled in her stead her father gave Otto power instead of Daemon and Rhaneyra. Also Alicent is reluctant to murder? She literally ordered the murder of Mysaria she only wants to refrain from killing Rhaneyra cause of her shared youth and also because that would be Kinslaying. If she were such a good queen who cares about her people then why is the child fighting pits flourishing under her rule.
@@daemontarg000 1. Rhaenyra left KL long before Viserys was nearly entirely catatonic. She left because she felt threatened which is valid but a foolish decision considering you are heir. You have your duties. You should step up and weather the storm but she didn't and it just goes to show she's ill-prepared for her supposed "right to the throne". 2. Alicent is reluctant to murder. She was hesitant to order the disposal of her handmaiden whose allegiance did not actually align with hers. Anyone in her position playing the game of thrones would've done so. Not once had she just reached for murder as a first option unlike Daemon and Rhaenyra (in the show they watered down just how brutal Rhaenyra already is by not having her directly order Vaemond's death and then feeding his corpse to the dragon, but then again, she didn't seem to care at all that Daemon just murdered him out right). 3. The fighting pits are flourishing because 1. she doesn't control the gold cloaks directly. 2. these fight pits are secretive and meant to be hidden away. If they are so easily dealt with, they wouldn't be there. By all accounts, the small council and Alicent's rule thus far has been good or at least adequate that the small folk are cheering them on during Aegon II's corenation.
@@trueblueedits4673 1. Had she stayed she would’ve been killed the moment Viserys died. Sure she would’ve built up her own spies in the court and would have guards protecting her but with so many kids one of them would’ve been taken prisoner for sure. Otto and the small council were already against Rhaneyra since Aegon was born the only thing keeping her head after Viserys died was Lyonel Strong as hand and that was also another murder innocent Alicent covered up. 2. Alicent was reluctant to be a whore and sell her body for getting something out of Larys not of murdering her handmaiden. 3. If Otto and Alicent can’t even control the Gold Cloaks/Local Police that shows how ineffectual their rule actually is. She doesn’t even know where her sons spends his time and instead of teaching him to be a good man she covers up all his mistakes. Same with Aemond she has bred hate so far in their hearts and now she is telling to be peaceful with Rhaneyra? The only thing Alicent is a hot mess.
P.S Rhaenyra is equally foolish but unlike Alicent she actually has better advisors
@@daemontarg000 1. This is just plain wrong. As easy as it would be to just kill her, she has too many connections to just get rid of like that. It would've sparked war instantaneously. I highly doubt it would've happened. But sure, let's say that she would've been killed. She's still highly negligent regarding court politics and the state of KL. She hasn't done enough. 2. She was hesitant. She was slow to nod and agree to having the backstabbing handmaiden killed because unlike what a lot of people think, Alicent isn't some cold-blooded calloused killer. In that position, getting ride of a backstabber is the best option and anyone would've done so but her uneasy slow nod is clearly her not wanting to do it but being backed into a corner. "Alicent was reluctant to be a whore and sell her body" who wouldn't? But she did it anyways to better equip herself with information that could aid her children. It's highly admirable and selfless. 3. Otto and Alicent *have* control the gold cloaks but it's not like they *are* the gold cloaks. Just because you have control over then doesn't mean you can monitor every single move. Petty crime that just happens is very different from the high illicit underground fight pits. It's like lowering petty theft rates vs lowering child sex trafficking. One is a lot easier to deal with. Besides, they showed us these pits in KL, it doesn't mean they haven't existed before. Besides, Viserys couldn't control Daemon and his gold cloaks' actions either and I'd say looking at the state of the city and how it is being run by no the king but the council the hand and the queen, I'd say they have to do at least a decently good job to keep the smallfolk seemingly content. 4. As for her children yeah, she isn't a perfect mother by any means but she's saddled with more responsibility than any other mother in the realm arguably + the highest consequence for any mistake. Any little hiccup and her sons and daughter and her family could die because of the unique nature of Rhaenyra's succession. It's hardly a surprise her family is the way it is (and let's not pretend Aemond and Aegon's nature isn't because of Viserys' complete deadbeat fathering either. He didn't love his sons at all). Alicent is not perfect. Not by a long shot. But between the two, she is MUCH more sympathetic from my point of view. Her back has always been in a corner while Rhaenyra backed herself into it (but that's another conversation entirely)
@@trueblueedits4673 Rewatched her scene with Larys and there is no hesitancy at all in killing Talya just surprise that she spies on her she straight out orders if he can kill the Queen Bee. She has actually ordered the deaths of people for her own political benefit yet pretends that she isn’t a murder herself. She is just as weak as Rhaneyra imo as she actually has power to change matters yet goes about it in the most silliest of ways. If she were a better ruler she would’ve had Aegons Kingsguard report all his doings to her to make sure he is actually ready to rule and not the mess he is. Is Viserys to blame as well yes of course but Aegon feels unloved by her as well not just Viserys. She picks and chooses the children she wishes to show her love too she’s a good mom to both Aemond and Helena but terrible to Aegon so much so that he craves the love of strangers because he doesn’t get it from his family
alicent is easily my favorite character in recent memory.. so nuanced and tragic. olivia cooke and emily carey embody her amazingly. this is a beautiful edit and tribute to the character, thank you.

I didn't understand either, then I read the book and now I understand why. They make her innocent for this season, but when something unforgettable happens to her and her family, she will become full Cercei

I think Viserys and Alicent are very similar to each other. Each cares for the people in their lives and is trying to cope best with the situation they are in. They are both in their own ways hostages to power. They occasionally lose their temper but are not natural born cut-throat power seekers.
