I would like to write an essay about Alicent, but my video turned out to be quite eloquent.

The core issue is Alicent does everything expected of her and gets neglected while Rhaenyra does whatever she wants and gets covered for it by her father because she's the favorite.
The whole reason Viserys marries her is to have a male heir, but by the time Alicent gives him that several times over, he's changed his mind and decided he does want Rhaenyra as his successor.
This basically makes Alicent’s entire struggle not only pointless, but also dangerous because Rhaenyra will always see her children as a threat. Now whether or not she'd actually kill them is speculative.
But once she has the throne and Viserys is dead, there is nothing that would stop her as she already hates Alicent, her father and her children.
At the end of the day Alicent is fighting for recognition and survival, something that Rhaenyra does not have to worry about.
Rhaenyra wants the throne because she believes it's her right but Alicent wants it for Aegon to give her life meaning and to ensure hers children's survival.
I changed my favorite from blacks to greens
At the end of the day, Alicent's kids are a threat to Rhaenyra's rule. Whether or not she wants to kill them, they will eventually be disposed of if she's queen. If Team Green didn't push their claim, the boys would likely have been imprisoned, and later killed quietly because that would be the only way to secure her own or her children's claims to quiet people who would rather not have a queen or not have illegitimate children succeed her. Whether or not Rhaenyra wants it doesn't matter. It's what will happen. If she doesn't do it herself, her supporters will for her. It's literally repeated throughout history.

Rhaenyra is also fighting for the lives of her and her children. Both are in that same boat.

Everyone hates her but to me she's one of the most realistic and complex characters in the show! I'm critical of some of the changes from the books but the actresses were amazing in the role. Great edit! 💚

I would have mounted my dragon and burned down the Red Keep with all green faction inside, along with the Iron Throne. Then I would have gone to burn down everyone who sided with them, take their swords and make a much bigger and better Iron Throne for myself… simple.

I love Alicent. Let's be honest, if she's the regent/monarch, atleast the small folk would be better off. Rhaenyra spares no thought for the people she governs. Remember the argument on the stepstones about putting a garrison and alicent says they crown has no enough funds? Well t the end, her high taxes and the death of Helaena instigated the revolt that killed the dragons.

She can't raise the taxes of lords because that might alienate her own supporters
The lords may get pissed off and switch allegiance to Aegon which may become disastrous for her
Rhaenyra was put in an impossible situation by the greens who usurped her
Alicent isn't better but she and Rhaenyra are equals

That's inaccurate. Building fortifications are way less expensive than another war with the stepstones and reduced trade because of the pirates (which is what happens, and Coryls has to go and fight again to save the realm). They had enough money to renovate and redecorate the red keep but not enough to fortify the stepstones to save the realm from another war. Also, what have we seen from Alicent that shows she's better for the small folk? She has the entire city pulled out of their homes and workplaces and dragged across the entire city (which isn't small) just so her son can have a full coronation. Do you not think people were injured from that? Do you not think people were killed? I love Alicent, but she's just like all the other nobles--willing to sacrifice the small folk for their own personal gain.

Allicent gets unfair villification. She's flawed and she's been violent, but I feel she is demonized by the fandom whereas ther worse characters are whitewashed.
It's so embarrassing to hear people call Alicent an EVIL, lol. It seems that everyone has forgotten that life is not divided into black and white.
I cringe when I hear people praise daemon, yet they cast allicent into the shadows. Her development is so complex and tragic to witness, but such a good part of the story.
alicent is villified in my eyes for a number of reasons, though i do feel bad for her for everything her father forced upon her, she betrayed nyra multiple times, and then literally COVERED UP for her r4pist son. that for me was the straw that broke the camel's back.
I'll never understand why a mother trying to protect her kids is looked at as bad. All rhaenyra did is prove those thoughts to be true when her son took her brother's eye and all she could do is say he committed treason. Basically proposing an even worse outcome where he should be executed, the damn prince.
If somebody maimed my child (THE PRINCE) and no justice was delivered, in that era, I'd definitely pull a knife too. Someone has to pay.

Rhaenyra covered up for her son who maimed her own brother after jumping him.
I don’t get the hate for Alicent. The first half of the season, she’s what she’s been raised to be - a pious, well behaved, obedient highborn lady. What was she expected to do when Viserys announced he wished to marry her? Disobey both her father and her king? Not likely.
And then she realises she’ll not always be able to rely on her father, her husband or her friends to protect her. That she’s surrounded by people who will gladly cause her pain to gain power. So she becomes a political creature with only one goal - protect her children and herself. And she will be as terrible as she must be in order to do so.
In the words of cersei "love no one but your children". Viserys surely didn't so Alicent had to go even harder. It's clear to me he hated those kids. He only had one favorite

Rhaenys few moments later kills with her dragon dozens of people.
That is like she gave her a massage that as Targaryen on a dragon you are above the people.
Rhaenys on her dragon is probably the dumbest fanservice in TV history 💀 They wanted to show the girlboss moment, but for me the real girlboss moment was with Alicent, when she shielded her children without thinking.
@@bazingonator I'm sure the show's writers know what they were doing with that scene by showing us the innocent victims among the smallfolk. Mysaria's speech to Otto in the same episode announces that there will one day be a price to be paid for these innocent victims. And I 100% agree that it's Alicent who has the real girlboss moment in this sequence. What an epic way to answer the question Aegon posed to her just before when he asked "do you love, mother?"
@@natzbarney4504 I would really like your theory about innocent victims to be true. As someone who has read the book, I even WANT to say that this is true, but the way the writers talked about this scene just kills me. "Civilians don't count," they said.
I also do not understand the reaction of the audience, who, in all seriousness, rejoiced at the act of terror that Rhaenys committed...
@@bazingonator I think they implied that "Civilians don't count" for the nobility of the 7 kingdoms, which is generally true. For the feudal lords, the commoners towards whom they have no duty of protection are nothing and do not count. And in every case, their opinion doesn't matter either, as Rhaenyra says in Episode 4.
But Mysaria's speech to Otto reassures me of the show's writers' intentions. It shows that they know, deep down, that smallfolk truly matters in the end. I think they know what they are doing and that they will show us that the opinion of the commoners sometimes counts for a lot and that there will ultimately be consequences for the victims of Rhaenys' outburst in the Dragonpit.

I absolutely loved this video. Alicent is one of the most complex characters on this show. Shame so many can't see it behind their bias and over-hatred.

Olivia's portrayal of Queen Alicent gives me shivers also the way she talks, her voice and her mannerisms. It feels like I'm watching a historical documentary and not a fantasy show. Henry Cavill and Anya Chalotra of the Witcher had similar performances which made me forget its fantasy. Really good video this is 🍀

Doesn't matter if you are Team Black or Team Green; both actresses, Emily Carey and Olivia Cooke, did a fantastic job. Emily's facial expressions and Olivia's expressive eyes and how her voice shakes- you can really feel their disappointment, their pain, their hatred. I can't wait for season 2!

Alicent's story is not tragic at all . He became what every woman wanted : she became queen , her husband was the king , her son became king , her daughter became queen , her second son was a great warrior and her third son was a good man

The Greens are the new Lannisters, complex and compelling characters
Alicent is very admirable, a great queen. She was a blessing to her father, and a good wife serving for sick and old husband, a good mother to her children looking after them, and she was a good friend to rheanyra and tried reconciling with her when she was constantly giving Alicent the cold shoulder. She was merciful to Ser Criston Cole.
She is dutiful, kind, has a servant’s heart, is honest, protective of her children, loyal to her family, faithful, and merciful. I look up to her and am encouraged by her character.
She's a badass! Always thought she was underrated. The character I don't like in this show is Criston Cole lmao (sorry Criston Cole fans). Alicent has always been a top tier person. Likable version of Cersei.

I'm still watching this, like this is maybe my 500th time, maybe 750th, really!. 🤣😅😁 I have never identified with author's storyline like yours. "What have I done, but what was expected of me?". A masterpiece. Alicent is such a powerful, complex and living character. As for actresses I adore whole Emily and Olivia's work, but my fave is "You are the challenge, simply by leaving and breathing" scene 🥲🥺
So much better than book Alicent. I went into this series thinking I would be a staunch black supporter now I’m kinda rooting for both sides and their stories to be told. 💚🖤

The way they made her in the series is way better than in the books to me... In the serie, she is complexe, loyal, deep and was played by the men in her life.... I really like her character. In the books she is way more colder, calculating and fake to me.
I’ve read the book fire and blood,Viserys does love or at least is very found of Alicent. He wasn’t forced to marry her or anything.
She fears for her son’s lives, I do believe it was a wrong turn to begin that war, but she was only thinking about protecting her family, she is not a monster.

As "young Alicent" she was definitely a victim and your clip with this soundtrack from Leftovers shows it so emotionally. I feel soooo sorry for her. And later.... Let me say I am woman and mom of 4 children and I know what she felt. I would litteraly do ANYTHING to stay my kids alive and in good condition, I cannot blame her. And in the meantime as a mother of 3 girls (only 1 is a boy) I feel so so so so sorry for young Alicent. I bet her mother wouldnt let all of this happen to her, she was not supposed to cheer up greaving old king (I know in books he is younger but we are talking about TV show). And I f***ing love Olivia Cooke for "simply living and breathing" scene

А Алисенте против воли пришлось участвовать в играх отца. Она действительно была хорошей женой и матерью, она пыталась поступать правильно, но все мы совершаем ошибки, многие вещи она делала из страха за своих детей.

Before this show began i was all for the Blacks but now im reconsidering...
Alicent was manipulated by the man who was supposed to love her most and have her best interest, unwillingly married off to a man that was easily twice her age if not more, had 3 ungrateful and rotten children, and loses her best friend and even becomes her enemy. It's a lot easier to feel bad for her than a girl that didn't want to marry even though that's what a princess was for then, continued to screw her uncle and a knight just as an eff you to her dad.
Oh you are totally right !!! I do not like Raenyra because she always does whatever she wants, whiteout thinking to consequences… Alicent is rightfully and she works a lot 4 the good of the people !

It’s sad and ironic. Alicent Hightower our lives all her children. Two out of three of her grandchildren, her parents. Her family, Farther, her plan all up in smoke and ash. She will die all broken and alone.
In the book she dies broken and alone. Imprisoned in a tower all by herself for the rest of her life by Aegon The Younger, so she won't ever be a threat after the dance of the dragons. In the book, F&B, she dies from some type of severe illness which kills about 1/2 the entire population of King's Landing AND Westeros as well. She's in her 50s or 60s when she dies. At least she was spared a lot of even further suffering. Unlike the Sea Snake who in the book lives to be 79 before dying of natural causes, his accidental, fatal fall on a staircase, Alicent's really not THAT old. In real life medieval times, King Charlemagne was 72 or 73 when he died of natural causes.

Alicent is the Sansa Stark of this show.
She is a mixed of Cersei for being cunning and strategic, sansa for her vulnerability and Olenna for being calculated. I love her she is my favorite caracter.
How stupid was Viserys to marry her, if he really wanted his first daughter on the throne. Was it lust? A mud life crisis? He seemed intelligent and decent...
Viserys was far from intelligent in my opinion. He was a plain fool and a perv. He couldn't admit to his daughter he wanted some ass and that's what drove him.
I feel for Alicent...Did not have a mother in childhood...Father was always busy in politics...did not get that love,comfort,trust from her friend...She has always doubts in her mind for rhaneyra and she proved her right by claiming to the throne...
She was married to aan who did not love her...Nobody would want a life like her...

She was twisted in a game. Her father wanted her to be Queen so he convinced her to seduce the king and be his new wife. Even though she was rhenerya best friend.

Her character is VERY well built one of the best, but my emotional side just despises her. I honestly felt betrayed.

What have I done but what's expected of me? She's slapped her children, she's allowed them to become the type of person who rapes and puts their bastard in fighting pits. Her legacy is cruelty. The contrast of her children and Rhaenyra's speaks for itself.

She didn't just let him be .If you think that she is cruel then so is Vesris since they were his children too and he let them become idiots. She did everything she was asked while rhaenyra flew off to dragonstone stayed there for years and forgot her father She came back after years to find out her dad was sick and she didn't even come for him she came because she had some problems and then after he he helped her she left him again knowing he was really sick . Then she had the audacity to accuse alicent of killing her father . Rhaenyra was a liar.

I do think Viserys has some degree of cruelty in his lack of interaction with the kids, he left them entirely to her which was an uneven yoke. He did however have the excuse of Slowly And Agonizingly DYING. She did not.
She was a pisspoor parent. She was performative and not hands on. Multiple scenes show her rolling her eyes at her boys being aggressive and enduring her daughter who quite literally pushes her away because she’s had enough of her mothers pathetic attempts at endurance.
I’m rewatching GOT and the parenting determines the child so clearly. Caitlin and Ned raised noble boys who looked out for others and had zero interest in bloodshed for bloodshed’s sake. So did Rhaenyra. It can be done.
But Alicent has this boys will be boys attitude and let’s them run amock so early in that by the time they’re adults they have not only found the fighting pits but actively participate in throwing kids in. That is a parental fuckup decades in the making.
