  • Hi everyone, this video is a KDP tutorial on how to self publish a picture book. It's all the technical info like formatting the book, creating templates, what the bleed and safe zones are. Do you need to buy your own ISBN number? What extra pages do you need in your book, like Copyright page, Endpapers, Title page. I hope you find this helpful.

      @@EmmaCarpenterIllustration So glad the move went well and Wales, how beautiful. I have only been to North Wales but the shots you showed in your newest video look so beautiful. I would love to see a seal one day. There are 3 different ones in dummy stage or early development - one is called “How Maud met Anne” on how Lucy Maud Montgomery got her book Anne of Green Gables published, the other one is called “Bim and the Brass Band on Silent Island” about the power of music and overcoming old conventions, and then one more about a little mouse that has wings but cannot fly due to all the things he cannot let go of called “Archimedes learns to fly” :)

    Hi Emma, Good tutorial. After reading all about what expanded publisher means. My question is, if I were to choose that expanded option, at the lesser royalties rate of 40%, would I receive royalties from publishers behind the expanded publishers, like libraries and unis, etc., if they choose to buy...AND royalties from Amazon KDP sales and the 60% rate from their sales of my book?
    WOW! Is not clear as mud?

  • @cloverblossom9801
    @cloverblossom9801 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Thank you! I have a question. Printing through Amazon, wouldn’t make an Amazon as a publisher? If not then what would you put because if someone wants to reference your book in their writing, they need this information. And what name for Amazon exactly do I put. Because Amazon kdp registers their free ISBN with Bowker (it says on kdp website), in Bowker’s field for publisher kdp writes “Independently published” and not “Amazon kdp”. Where is if you get free ISBN from Barns & Noble Press in the box for publisher they put their name “Barnes & Noble Press”.

  • @JasonHauser125
    @JasonHauser125 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Also, from what I have learned (and from creating books on KDP) you really do want to buy your own ISBN's for maximum market coverage. Limiting it to just Amazon - albeit free - limits how much your book gets seen.

    What I find very odd is that they only give you one size for a landscape. When I wrote my book, I was hoping it was going to be a little bigger but because the only size I could choose in landscape form was a 6 by 8. Or somewhere close to that. I wish they would give us more choices for landscape style books.

    What a beautiful book! Congratulations🎉 and thank you for sharing such an informative process! I was wondering what was your scanning or photographing process? Any tips? I am creating a childrens book with watercolor illustrations and that is my next step!

      Thank you so much 😄 I scanned everything in at 600dpi (300dpi is the standard). Then I edit in Photoshop, brighten, contrast, up the saturation a bit. I would recommend watching Kendyll Hillegas, she has a great video on scanning & editing traditional art here th-cam.com/video/4KX9a1iMugs/w-d-xo.html Good luck with your book! 📚

    Is 600 vs. 300 DPI important? Seems like 300 is sufficient, but I'm not sure.

      @EmmaCarpenterIllustration  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for watching Jason, 300dpi is fine. I'm just future proofing in case I want to make really big art prints or something, I've got the option of going bigger.

    Thank you for sharing. I published a paper back on Amazon kdp, but the colors were not vibrant. I chose the best option for a color printed book, and the print quality was still poor. The colors looked faded.

    • @EmmaCarpenterIllustration
      @EmmaCarpenterIllustration  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes the colours look faded if you were working with RGB colours. Make sure your files are in CMYK. You could then adjust the saturation to make it more vibrant. Hope that helps, and good luck 😊📚

    So I guess the illustrator has to do everything in photoshop? (It's not like I can create a word document, type in the text and then send it to the illustrator to do design around it, unless I have photoshop, right?) bummer.

      Thanks for watching Juliette ☺️ scanning your artwork would be best. If you don’t have a scanner you can take photos of your work, but try to make sure the lighting isn’t too dramatic and you take the photos straight so they don’t look stretched. If you do have access to a scanner there’s a great video from Kendyll Hillegas about scanning & editing traditional art here th-cam.com/video/4KX9a1iMugs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=kmsaO4PUMeu3KYVj

    Do all hardback books need to be a minimum of 75 pages ? I want to write a Childrens book for toddlers and 75 pages would be too much for a toddler. It will have illustrations.

      Hi Janice, thanks for watching ☺Yes the min number of pages for hardback books on kdp is 75. I think Ingram Sparks you can do a hardback for less pages, but I haven't tried them out. Good luck with your book!

    I didn´t know you can design a book in Photoshop. I designed all my published books with InDesign. I self publish all books locally and do not sell through Amazon. Good information anyway. Greetings from Patagonia.

    Do you or anyone know if I can just get the ISBN # and have my book printed myself and just sell it on my amazon seller account? I've been selling used and new books on Amazon for years, and many times when the price of the book goes down, they de-activate my listing until I bring my price down to match the lowest. This worries me that they might do that with my book. Anybody know?

    Helpful video, thanks for the tips in set-ups. From my understanding you don’t need to buy a barcode, though, you can generate a barcode through any number of free generators. It’s just about making the series of numbers machine-readable.

      @@EmmaCarpenterIllustration Thank you for replying! I watched your entire video and loved seeing you color and decide everything. But I still do not understand how you do the illustrations. I understand how to color on paper but at the 7 minute mark you talk about an ipad. At 7:30 I don't understand what you are doing. Can you please explain? What is the whole process from coloring on paper to submitting digitally? What apps and stuff do you use? Thank you!
