"Strangling is really a theme in this movie." The Riddler's henchmen weren't being strangled or hung. They tethered themselves to the arena's rafters so they wouldn't fall.
Batman injected himself with epinephrine to give himself an adrenaline boost. Some thought it could've been Venom, a powerful steroid that gives the user superhuman strength. The supervillain Bane is best known for using Venom to enhance his strength, though there was a comic storyline where Batman became addicted to it. However, a recent art book from the film's production clarifies that it's epinephrine and not Venom.

@@chrisrusso3318 Many of the comics, animated and even the awful Batman and Robin movie's interpretation of the serum Venom have always been coloured green. I think that's why some people thought that injection was a movie version of Venom.
the green colouring is an accidental misdirect in regards to batman lore. The film uses that colour for a different narrative purpose, like green lens flares from white light sources, denoting the camera or "storyteller" putting that tint in. it runs through the film in scenes Riddler isn't, along with other nods to his mask in set designs (the green domed rooftops visible by the batsignal aren't accidental) and the occasional weird reflection. There's some very subtle stuff going on in this film that point to a layered narrative with a Riddler eye view of events, including subtle jabs at Batmans character and motivations. When you start seeing the little wtf, did he just do that bits, it's interesting finding more. Batmobile "stalling" is a good one, as you can see Batmans silhouette and he does not behave like a person who just stalled their car, scrabbling for the ignition or gear shift. He just sits dead still as if he'd revved it on purpose to provoke penguin into fleeing. Granted it's a little ambiguous, but you'll find similar little things like deflecting when Selina asks about the lenses being visible. He never says if they are or not, just says "i'm watching you" which is not an answer to that question.
sorry, i'm rambling a little there. I'm surprised and impressed by the layering in this film and hope more people will enjoy digging into it, another puzzle left by the riddler 😅
Or maybe calling it epinephrine is the real misdirect, to not give away any future plot points. Y'know, "I'm not in the new Spider-Man" stuff.

This movie is legit a masterpiece in nearly every respect. Literally cannot wait for the sequel.
If you want more Batman content, I highly recommend checking out some of the animated movies. Under the Red Hood is one of the best.

I love that this is the story of Bruce Wayne deciding exactly what he wants to be, what path he has decided to pursue. He will not be Vengeance, but something more. Maybe...Justice? What the Riddler pretended to be? And I adore the symmetry--that Gotham City begins to love Batman, just as Batman falls in love and some one falls in love with him.
I think the next movie will probably echo "No Man's Land" in much the same way this film echoed "The Long Halloween."

42:45 - That's all part of establishing the parallel between Batman and The Riddler. Both orphans, both have scenes with them looking through windows through binocular-type devices, both operate outside of the law enacting their own idea of justice. It's meant to highlight the ethical ambiguity that Batman operates within. I mean ultimately we know him as the hero because we get to see his virtue. But within the context of his own world, he's a vigilante that takes justice into his own hands. And that's something the character of Batman has to struggle with, both within himself and with how the world views him at times; he's constantly walking that line between hero and deranged vigilante.
THOUGHTS ON GOTHAM CITY
From a visual standpoint, loved Gotham looked amazing and fits with the lore of Gotham City. In 1840, Gotham underwent a major urban planning initiated by Judge Solomon Wayne and architect Cyrus Pinkney that laid the foundation of Gotham City. Under Wayne's commission, Pinkney's design was meant to invoke a "bulwark against the godlessness of the wilds wherein we may nurture the gifts of Christian civilization and be protected from the savagery which lurks in untamed nature."
This followed the Gothic Revival architecture (Popular at the time) and Pinkney himself went all in backed by Solomon Wayne who funded everything. If you have the money you can do anything so it's a pretty realistic reason on why Gotham is completely made up of Gothic Revival architecture more so than any other city they simply had the funding to finish such a project project. In the 1900s Art Deco became massive which explains the Art Deco aesthetic which you can see more so in Tim Burtons film's and the Animated Series but there is hits of it in this film such as the Skyscrapers. It did feel very Arkham Knight (Video Game) the mix of old meets new that 1930s Art Deco and 1880s gothic look meets modern 2020 with hints of 1970s/1980s. Wish we saw a little bit more art deco designs but this is more of a nit-pick.
WHY I PREFERED THIS GOTHAM TO THAT OF THE NOLAN MOVIES
This was something The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises lacked the look and feel felt nothing like Gotham with the city of Chicago (The Dark Knight was filmed) having very few Gothic locations, setting just never looked like Gotham. Batman Begins Looked pretty good with the Narrows along with the Art Deco train system connecting to Wayne Tower being the best aspect of the city for me which was gone in the sequel. As much as I love the Nolan movies they just had the weakest depiction of Gotham City and felt more like Batman in Chicago and New York rather than Gotham City. and I know people will argue "But Nolan wanted to go for a grounded realistic look" I've just proven that Gotham City is possible with the right funding.
also love the classic 1950s style diner where Riddler was captured just felt so much like the opening of Arkham Knight and it's Gotham in general which drew from every depiction of Gotham from the Neon Lights of Joel Schumacher Gotham to the more retro 1930s artistic from the Burton movies and of course the modern day artistic featured in the Nolan movies. This film nailed the Gothic look while also keeping it more grounded something The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises lacked both didn't really feel like Gotham but instead some random East Coast city with a lack of a personality.
THOUGHTS ON BRUCE WAYNE
One aspect i wasn't too big on was this rendition of Bruce Wayne felt movies like Mask of the Phantasm (Highly recommend watching it) did a way better job at dealing with the conflict between a younger Bruce and Batman. This film didn't highlight Bruce really at all but I can see this version developing overtime something the sequel hopefully dives into. I did enjoy the Detective side really the only live action Batman movie to showcase Batman as the "Worlds Greatest Detective" or in this case a much earlier version which even shows him making many mistakes.
BATMAN EARTH-ONE
This film drew heavily from the Batman Earth-One issues in one key area. Martha Wayne being an Arkham instead of a Kane pulled right from Batman Earth-One. In almost all renditions Martha is a Kane just like Bruce's cousin Kate Kane who is of course Bat woman. Maybe Kate still exists in this universe but as an Arkham but who knows. Alfred also trained Bruce in both Earth-One and this film with the Earth-One Alfred being a Royal Marine. Since Frank Millers Year One comic Bruce has spent his early years exploring the world coming back to Gotham like we see in Batman Begins which is where he learnt to fight. Side note the mainline DC comic's take place on Earth-0 ever since the Crisis on Infinite Earths event. Pre this event Earth-1 was the main DC Sliver Age universe with the Golden Age versions of characters were set on Earth-2.
MUSIC
The music Is very Shirley Walker who composed the amazing music for the Batman Animated Series. The composer Michael Giacchino who did The music for The Batman was inspired by her music something I wish we heard more of. There's also a track that plays at the funeral outside when Bruce gets out of her car that sounds very animated series more hopeful sounding.
WHAT I WOULD LIKE IN A SEQUAL
My ideal Sequel would 100% be a movie focused around Mister Freeze inspired by his appearance in the Batman Animated Series would both give us an interesting villain but also a fun setting go more for a winter theme with blue overtones instead of Red maybe add more colour instead of the film being dark 24/7. But each to their own lol I know people who adore this movie and others not so much mostly relating to how long the movie was or how some characters didn't get more time.
OTHER BATMAN MEDIA TO REACT TO OUR WATCH BY YOURSELF
If you want to see more Batman I highly recommend checking out Batman 1989 and Batman Returns the two Tim Burton Batman films which redefined the look and feel of Gotham. In terms of animation I highly recommend the Batman Animated Series from the 1990s it's one of the few mediums outside of the comic's that was able to highlight the character as it's a show after all that can develop these character over the course of seasons. This gave birth to the DCAU (DC Animated Universe) which included shows like Superman, Justice League, New Batman Adventures, and Batman Beyond all set within the same universe coming together in the Justice League show which is the DC version of the Avengers. You also have the DCAMU which is based on the New 52 these are all movies that take place in the same universe starting with Flashpoint.
I'm not the biggest fan of the DCAMU as some movies are great while other's aren't but I say check them out if you're interested, much prefer the DCAU. You also have one off films such as Under the Red Hood which is based on the comic but isnt connected to any of these universes. You also have Frank miller's comic adaptations like Batman Year One and The Dark Knight Returns both acting as their own elseworlds story which can be watched by themselves like The Batman movie.
As of Justice League Dark: Apokolips War the DCAMU universe has ended but now we have this now universe stating with Man of Tomorrow and Justice Society: WW2. Batman Long Halloween shares the same art style so that's why I've placed it in this universe. Out of all of these I'd recommend the DCAU as it's just the better experience even just watching Mask of the Phantasm (movie) should be enough if you don't want to dive into a show and then maybe jump into films like Batman Beyond: Return Of The Joker.

You reacting to the Riddler standing behind the mayor in the beginning was great! Pretty much the reaction I had too.
Glad you liked the movie! Pattinson does such a great job showing a Batman that's recognizable but that hasn't grown completely into his role as Batman or Bruce Wayne. He's a workaholic and doesn't care about his own wellbeing. This movie shows him he can't just be dark because he'll inspire darkness in others. He can't be a recluse because people need him. And Alfred and Selina teach him he can't be callous to shield himself from his fears of losing those he loves.
I may be nine months late for this comment thread, but let's give Addie a round of applause for surviving The Batman (2022). 👏👏 Brilliant reaction. The best part will always be when you freaked out over the Riddler hiding in the shadows, at 1:41. Overall, my girlfriend & I enjoyed seeing this movie in IMAX, last year and I'm looking forward to seeing the sequel in 2025.

This movie was quite a pleasant surprise. Pattinson was really good as Batman, and Paul Dano as the Riddler was absolutely INSANE..! o.O I don't think I'll ever be able to say that somebody surpassed Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker, but Paul Dano (and obviously Joaquin Phoenix) definitely shared the stage.
The movie was overrated...3 of 10 imho

Not only the use of light, but the use of him being the shadows and vengeance. When the Riddler goon says he’s vengeance you could tell Batman was unsettled by that. Moments later he jumps on the cord and cuts it falling to the water. That’s symbolic of him being baptized and reborn. He is no longer the shadows but becomes the light by lighting the flare.
Yup, usually i dont like cheesy transformations of characters. This one was good. Blinded by his own vengeance for years, the Riddler holds a mirror into his face. The flare and leading people out of the misery was visually so amazing.
I liked Greig Fraser's cinematography

Then I reached the age of reason and realized that's one of the dozens of reasons why he's the best.

Because that’s how human trafficking works. You bring someone in country with the promise of work, then you tell them they owe you money for the flight and their room & board. You put them to work to pay off the “debt,” which of course never gets paid off, and you hang onto their passport so they have no documentation. They can’t go to the cops, because they’re here illegally and you’ve told them they’ll end up in prison or a concentration camp where they’ll be brutalized, leaving them feeling completely powerless.
That’s how almost all human trafficking happens. You don’t get kidnapped off the street, you get tricked into an impossible situation.
I have to confess, I was one of those who was very very dismayed at the news of Robert (Trevor?) Pattinson was cast as The Batman. Boy howdy did he ever prove me wrong. The only actor I’ve seen take on the role and deliver a nearly completely satisfying interpretation of the characters Bruce Wayne/The Batman. And after multiple viewings now, I have to say, I think he’s the best embodiment of The Batman while wearing the cape and cowl. His Batman just feels very believable, not a caricature, and the same goes for his Bruce Wayne. Obviously, there’s things each and every fan would do differently, but at the end of the day, he crushed it. And let’s not forget to give plenty of credit to Matt Reeves and Michael Giacchino!!

I'm glad you noticed how they played with light in this movie. I love how Batman's first appearance in front of people was emerging from the shadows to beat them up but the last appearance in front of people was to light up the way to safety for the people in the floods.

Severed live cable near open water with people wading in it? Not a good thing, so Batman dangling from a safer height cut the cable, and his suit has voltage insulation (Im assuming). the armor took the voltage so that nobody in the water on the ground would die.
The movie is inspired by BLADE RUNNER, Se7en, Saw, Silence Of The Lambs, All The President's Men, Klute, Zodiac, Chinatown, The French Connection, Batman The Long Halloween and every single Hitchcock movie.

I found the music and setting to be perfect. I love the Batman theme, very powerful. I'm looking forward to the sequels but I want them to change their Joker design, I hate it.
Love this movie but the first time in theaters when the Joker scene happened my reaction was more or less "Seriously?". Would rather they just sidestep him entirely, do other villains like Fries or Clayface. I do think the deleted scene warms me up to Keoghan more but I'm still not too into it.
The joker design is more realistic. If you dropped into a tank of chemicals and survived you’d look like that
FYI, it's a common tactic of human traffickers/slavers to seize the passports of the people they're exploiting. Such people are usually brought in from out-of-country (legally or otherwise), and taking their passport means they're stranded in a foreign land where they have no legal status or rights and are thus completely reliant on their captors (a similar vile fate befalls those who are rendered "stateless", which is to say that they are citizens of no recognized government and, as such, are more-or-less completely defenceless if their rights are violated. E.g. much of the Thai fishing industry runs on such slave labour). For example, just about all the labour done for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, also known as the "Slave Cup", has been done by workers imported from India on false promises of decent jobs, who then find themselves imprisoned by their employers in a nation that has no interest in stopping the abuses. Seizing passports often also means that the person is left with no way to prove their legal identity.
A note about the Zodiac killer, on whom Riddler is partially based; while it's true that it took a long time to crack some of Zodiac's ciphers, it's not because they were sophisticated. Rather, it's because Zodiac was incredibly bad at translating his own code, meaning the messages were full of errors. This makes decryption difficult, as it's like trying to "decipher" a coded message that was gibberish to begin with; how would you ever know when you'd gotten back to the "original" meaningless jumble of letters? A simpler example might be word jumbles; "eret" can be re-arranged to "tree" pretty easily, because that arrangement of characters has meaning. If you were trying to unjumble "tygx" and the solution was "xtyg", how could you distinguish it from the other nonsensical permutations?
Pattison really disappeared into Batman, but I think he was topped by Colin Ferrell as Penguin. I had no idea that was him until it was specifically pointed-out.

This movie is awesome! It’s like Batman meets the Sopranos and Dick Tracy. So cool and badass. I can watch it over and over and never get bored, plus Peter Sarsgaard is one of my favorites.
If any movie is going to change the mind of general moviegoers about Robert it's this one. He's such a great actor that people only refer to as that guy from Twilight

Carmine Falconi mentioned a flashback scene from the Batman Long Halloween comics where Bruce remembers his father fixing Carmine's wounds on the Wayne diner table.
Hi Addie! This movie is inspired by 4-parts comics books story released in 1987 called Batman: Year Two. It's basically the beginning of his career, that's why the police officers in general do not trust him.
And at the final fight that was an adrenaline injection, so he could function again quickly.
Cool video. The whole point is that Batman IS NOT vengeance anymore. He learns that following that path the inevitable outcome is you become like the Riddler. So when he hears the Riddler clone say "I am vengeance" he realizes he has to change. So he lights the flare and becomes a Hero. This movie is the story of his journey to a vengeance filled shadow of the night to a hero. It is no mistake he is out operating in the daytime at the end of the movie.

By the end of the trilogy (hopefully not just two parts) Pattinson will definitely be considered the definitive Batman. They’re taking him on a bigger character arc than people are used to, the idea being; the emotional journey to becoming the quintessential Batman is more believable. A lot more nuance to that but IFYKYK.

The riddler didn't know Bruce Wayne is Batman, his problem with Bruce was just jealousy, if he knew he wouldn't be trying to kill Bruce while wanting Batman to be part of his plans
You mentioned you've seen the Christopher Nolan Batman films, and now you've seen this. If you haven't seen the 1989 Batman with Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson, you should definitely watch that next. It still holds up well today, Nicholson's Joker is a tour-de-force in chewing the scenery and being creepifying at the same time, and there's a reason people today still want to see Michael Keaton return as Batman (and will be getting their wish soon in the upcoming Flash movie). This was the first time Batman was seen on screen since the campy 1960s Batman, and really started the whole superhero movie rollercoaster we're still on today.
Batman is vengeance no more. That was the realization when the follower of Riddler said he was vengeance. They were similar, and he didn't want that. He was a sign of hope for Gotham.
I know this was a year ago but you really need to watch the original Batman movies, just the first two though, Batman and Batman Returns, the ones directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton as Batman. Ignore the other movies. Personally I consider this to be the worst Batman live action movie (not counting the horrendous DCEU movies)
I've watched this movie several times and I just absolutely love it. The 'Dark Knight' is the best overall (mainly because of Heath Ledger), but this one was incredible and I believe Pattinson is my favorite "Batman". He didn't have as much time as Bruce Wayne, but that's because he's consumed with being Batman at this time. And that Batmobile was by far my favorite. Loved it. And I loved this reaction too. Great job as always.
TDK is mid w no comic relevance
While there are some high points, overall I find this movie is the epitome of style over substance. There is excellent film making ability at play and so technically it is a good film, but I find the writing poorer and the execution of the Batman tropes and mythos far less effective. While the Penguin and Catwoman are excellent, Alfred, Gordon, and Batman himself are not nearly well executed as in the Dark Knight trilogy. This is strictly a writing assessment rather than performance. I also do not like this interpretation of the Riddles, nor the version of Joker we are briefly shown. I find the repetitive, droning score and the gloomy color palet has a numbing effect only compounded by the unnecessarily long runtime.
To me, there is almost nothing here that wasn't done better in the Dark Knight trilogy and most importantly, if this were anyone's first Batman movie, it kind of fails to tell you who the Batman is or make you empathize with him.

Hated this video ruined by too many commercials ruined my whole experience and I couldn’t get a grip would it be a film I wanted to watch it didn’t come across as a Batman film it came across as background noise - tv drama show playing but your doing something else more interesting and the constant commercials completely ruined any grasp of the film instead portraying it as a trashy tv show

Great reaction! Batman is my favorite superhero character of all time! And since you now know the character of Batman well, I think your going to like the other DC characters as well such as Superman and Wonder Woman. I highly recommend the DCEU movies, where they take a more bold and even darker direction with Batman. He is the most experienced Batman, and due to fight crime and injustice for 20 years, and suffering huge loses, especially his adopted son Robin at the hands of Joker, he has finally broken his moral code of "not killing" and has become more ruthless. The DCEU Batman's character arc is all about finding back his path of justice and hope in the good of humanity. Here is the list of DCEU movies in release date order if you're interested:

There's some subtle, but I think entirely deliberate, literary symbolism in the note Riddler left for Batman at what was intended to be Bruce Wayne's murder. It comes across as Riddler having the last laugh, the audience think he knows Bruce Wayne is Batman and is taunting him after killing him. But no, Riddler didn't know, he intended Batman to find that card when he went to investigate Bruce Wayne's murder. When Batman shows up at Arkham to talk to Riddler, Riddler says "I told you I'd see you in Hell," comparing Arkham to Hell (an apt comparison). And when you learn he thought he and Batman were on the same side, that they'd watch Gotham drown from the safety of Arkham's walls, I think that's where the literary symbolism come in. As Satan said in "Paradise Lost," "It is better to rule in Hell than serve in Heaven." If Riddler thinks of the rich, powerful, corrupt elite as the rulers of Gotham, then for them it's Heaven, but for those serving them it's Hell. By arranging to be arrested and incarcerated in Arkham, he's getting himself "kicked out of Heaven and banished Hell." But his plan is to pretty much destroy Gotham, then lead others like him into rebuilding something better. Better to rule in Hell than serve in Heaven.
Yeah one of the details that suggest the riddler doesn't know is that the "to the batman" card was in a fireproof envelope
Hi Addie! Great reaction! I really enjoyed this movie too. General audiences seemed to be somewhat split on this, I think a lot of folks were thrown off by the unexpected change in genre. People go to superhero movies expecting action, but this was more of a thriller than an action movie. Really heavy influences from films like Se7en, Zodiac, and Silence of the Lambs. Since you seemed to like this one, those 3 might be worth a look in the future.

Fun Fact: This Riddler is actually closer to Hush in the comics. They even had a scene in the movie where Riddler is talking on the news in the background and Hush’s name pops up on the screen for a quick second. An Easter egg for the next movie? Maybe so..
