Thank you for giving REAL world references. Appreciate your insights on these: 1. 80wh doesn't mean $h1t when in the real world you only get to play Elden Ring (or any AAA game) for only 40 MINUTES! (1:13) 2. Having a 20% bigger screen is a HUGE difference (6:25). I agree that on paper, 7.4" vs 7" screen seems like meh but in reality its a big deal. 3. That fullscreen- to-windowed bull$h1t that happpens everytime (12:24) on Red Dead 2 would annoy the F*ck outta me. 4. The SDcard issue (19:34) is a major ick for me about these Asus handhelds. 1TB SDcards are EXPENSIVE! Add to that the time & effort of installing, downloading, configuring games on these. Its a compounding loss if it gets damaged. Again thank you. I've watched hundreds of reviews on the Ally X, Steam Deck, Switch, etc. But your the only review that mentions these "Real World" experiences on the device. Keep it real bro. More power to you. 👍
The sleep issue you're having wouldn't really be much of an issue if you just use hibernate instead of sleep. You can change it by typing "what does the power button do" in the windows search. I have an Ally X and Legion Go and sold my launch steam deck. The Ally X handles windows the best out of those two devices. The steam deck does force you to do some tinkering as well in order to play games that you don't already own on steam. The fact you can play your entire gaming library including game pass is the value proposition for windows over using steam os. I use Ubisoft, Epic and Ea launchers for my games so the steam deck doesn't really work for someone like me.
Tbh on the Ally you can change this in the windows settings directly without going to the control panel. It works exactly like quick resume (fh5 crashes though 😂)
I have the Ally X. I used to have the Steam Deck Oled. I miss the Steam Deck. Don't get me wrong, Ally X performs better. The Steam Deck is just so convenient. I also miss the trackpads. It seems like almost every handheld is ditching trackpads and I think that's a huge bummer.
I know what you mean. A water pipe burst open on my roof and waterboarded my poor steam deck. Got an rog ally z1 x instead because some guy on fb market place was selling it 400 but managed to get it for 360 (awesome deal) And It's true I do miss the track pad which were goated for ARPGs, CRPGs, And strategy games. Another thing is miss is the customization the steam deck has over the ally.
Asus being scummy with their warranty is nothing new. I had an issue almost 20 years ago with one of their products and not only was their customer service AWFUL, they did whatever they could to not honour the warranty. I'm pretty sure I had to pay for shipping to ship the thing back, and when they finally sent it back to me it was the exact same component that I sent in to be fixed. I had to send it back in again, and this time they sent me a different but still broken item. All the while receiving some of the worst customer service I've ever dealt with. So even though their device is more powerful than the SD OLED, and with better battery life, I still went with the Steam Deck. Hell, even if their machine used Steam OS, I STILL would have gone with the SD OLED. Don't ever trust Asus, especially when you're going to be sinking $100s into one of their products that probably has a 50/50 chance of being total garbage and in need of repairs that they're too cheap to cover.
I had bad experiences with warranty too but with happy ending luckily Partner repair cnter are too shaddy Repair cost 585 and Amazon brand new cost 449 brainless 😂 They dont even use common sense
As someone who has never used a Windows handheld, and was curious about the idiosyncrasies that are often complained about online, you painted a great picture of why people prefer SteamOS. Your videos are very entertaining and in-depth. Thanks!
I have had the same fan issue thing with my handhelds and what I did is swapped out sleep with hibernation instead, the reason the fans turn on while it’s asleep is due to possibly getting updates/notifications & the handheld tends to detect heat changes so it automatically starts ramping up the fans to get rid of the heat. You can also just turn off background activity in sleep mode in your settings. There’s also a s3 sleep state but I can’t remember if the Ally has it
Ive been watching these videos back to back to back trying to find out wich one i want between the steamdeck and the rog ally x and im still struggling lol
dude i hear you its a tough call, the good news is they're both great so you really cant go too wrong. i PERSONALLY would look at the top 5 or 10 games you play, and check out how they run on each system, and have that help make my decision (and maybe think about the games you may want to play in the years you have the device)
That makes a lot of sense, thank you for the advice, and honestly if the rog ally x had an oled screen it wouldn't even be a question but I'm gonna check my steam library and find that out
@@JXER0so I have both recently got my ally x about 2 months ago and I’ll say this the steam deck is awesome don’t get me wrong but atleast in my opinion it’s awesome with the little indie titles and some big games but the ally x is honestly crazy like cod, halo, Fortnite these games you can actually play and not have an issue but Ofcourse you have to tweak the settings a bit and at first the window device seems overwhelming but honestly I think it’s cooler that it kind of forced me to TH-cam things because now I can learn to navigate it and I’m not very tech savy but I’m having a blast
Bro, you only have 2 place that you need to look out for updates as of now. 1. Windows update. 2. Armoury Crate. The device driver updates from AMD and My Asus are all consolidated in Armoury Crate updates. The Windows update is doing windows update. So IT IS NOT 4 places.
I sold my white Ally for a Steam Deck Oled, because my Ally had micro stutters in almost every game. And that was really annoying. With the Steam Deck Oled, the games sometimes look a little worse, but they don't jerk as much. I regret nothing. Thx.
Having owned an Ally (non X) for a year now, I have never had the battery dead when left fully charged nor had a game tell me I couldn't launch it because of out of date drivers (what game were you playing?). I never use sleep mode though. Not on my main PCs nor on my Ally. I'm just used to booting the PC whenever I want to use it. I also don't mind running updates in multiple locations. I also don't use an SD card (just use a larger SSD). Also .... the Ally X has 2 USB-C ports. That's huge if you want to connect a device and charge at the same time (like USB-C dongle latency free earbuds). Good points though. For someone that uses their Ally like you do, you make a good use case for the Deck. Such inferior hardware an no VRR though ... ugg my Deck has collected dust for a year.
Hey man! Love the videos! Just a quick question, have you ran into the “game already running” issue for Red Dead Redemption 2? I love my Rog Ally X, but I noticed that these little quirks with windows can make the experience frustrating
@ I agree! Also curious, have you ever thought about using bazzite? I have that dual booted on mine and games run significantly better on it in my experience. I only ever boot into windows for my gamepass games
@@DespyBlitz both steam and the rockstar launcher. I’ve tried ending task in the task manager and tinkering with the rockstar folder. Just need a permanent solution
I seriously considered an Ally X, but it's so much more expensive than the OG ally here in Canada, especially when rhe OG is easily found second-hand. Plus, I still main my SD OLED unless I'm playing a windows-only game.
Same, using hibernate, sleep works OK. With regard to tinkering, you have to do that on Steam Deck as well, if you want Tje game to run well, part of the fun is getting the game optimised to room well, default settings are rarely the best. If the Steam Deck wasn't so underpowered, I would still be using it.
To be honest I hated windows on legion go . It was a buggy mess . On ally z1 x it works great to a level that I wouldn't want to get steamos or bazzite in the future . Also don't use sleep on windows , use hibernation. Sleep on steamos isnt equal to sleep on windows . It's equal to hibernation
If that is the case, someone (whether its SteamOS or Windows) is not using the term correctly. Sleep (S3) - Goes into a lower power mode than being "awake" where everything other than the RAM is powered down. Battery will continue to drain since the RAM is still powered up. SteamOS should be using Sleep/S3 unless something has gone horribly wrong. Hibernate (S4) - Saves contents of RAM to the drive (generally in swap space on Linux or to your pagefile on Windows - which are effectively the same thing) and then powers the entire system down, which should let you keep it "off" for a lot longer*. Takes a bit longer to "boot back up" because the image of the state of RAM needs to be re-written to RAM (though the difference isn't as bad since most people aren't using spinning platter HDDs). To my knowledge, Windows doesn't expose Hibernate as an option unless you explicitly enable it, and by default uses Sleep/S3 as well. *Obviously, due to the way batteries work, neither will have literal zero power consumption (the battery will discharge even if the system is completely powered off - just veeeery slowly).
As far as I know, and available information says, the Steam Deck still draws power while sleeping, for the RAM. That is the exact definition of "sleep". Maybe it's just that Valve understands how to make sleep work, while Microsoft still doesn't?
@ Right, Deck definitely drains power when sleeping as you mentioned. Valve shouldn't even be having to do anything "special" to get sleep working on the Deck, Linux used to have a lot of wonky sleep issues but I can't say I've had issues for years - even when I still had an Nvidia card (which is where a lot of sleep issues stemmed from). What I will say is that Valve gets the benefit of being the maintainer of the OS *and* the hardware (like Apple), so they know that if sleep works on the Deck right before it goes out to customers, then it should still work afterwards (short of a bug coming up somewhere in the stack of course). Whereas Microsoft can really only have that guarantee with their Surface devices.
1h 11 min on the LCD Steam Deck is wild. I'm playing Elden Ring at mostly high settings and can reach 1 hour and 12 minutes while still having 50% left on the juice and it's safe to say it can reach almost 2 hours and 30 minutes. Granted I do have it undervolted bit still.
I like your videos but not going to subscribe until you give the ROG a real, fair shot…The steam deck shilling is incredible. I bought both devices a month ago and the Ally is just better dude. Windows is a strength, not a weakness. When they release their handheld OS, and they’ve already announced they will, it will be even more optimized than it already is. In the meantime, I’d take armoury crate + windows over SteamOS any day.
Fair for you to have your opinion but it's just that, an opinion. I have a Legion Go and the worst thing about it was Windows. I put Bazzite (SteamOS like variant) on it and never looked back. Has the pick up and go nature of SteamOS and working sleep...it's like a turbo Steam Deck with a massive screen. I'll probably upgrade to the Go2 for more RAM in the fall, but only if it gets Bazzite or SteamOS support. I'm not interested in Windows on a handheld and I think it was a fair callout.
@ Legion Go is also a WAY better handheld than the steam deck OLED. I don’t disagree with your point on Steam OS being more convenient. The issue is the inexcusable support for certain games on Steam OS (linux) + the lackluster desktop experience if you want to use the deck in “desktop mode”. It can’t come close to any device running windows.
@@510Live I have a Steam Deck OLED too. The Legion Go is better in some areas, worse in others. The Sream Deck murders it on low TDP games like indies for example. If you have an issue with SteamOS not running Fortnite or Destiny 2 or whatever, take it up with the developers of those games. Anti-cheat itself works on SteamOS (see The Finals and others), they just refuse to turn it on. I find the desktop experience just fine, btw. I pay my bills, edit my documents and videos and do all my general computing just fine on Bazzite. Your lack of knowledge in how to use Linux doesn't indicate a lack of capability. I actually used my Steam Deck docked as my computer last year while my main desktop was down for repair. It was fine. I have Windows, Linux and Mac machines and they're all good if you know what you're doing.
@@Invid72I had a legion go and the reason why windows sucked on it was because they didn’t optimise for use o windows. ASUS did so you could navigate properly with the controller and not just a tiny trackpad.
@@510Live Brother you cannot complain about the dude being a "steam deck shill" and then gargle the balls of windows. Windows is a dogshit, unoptimized, trash OS even on desktop, I can't even imagine having to use it on a handheld.
Seems like you are a little biased. You are comparing Steam Deck Oled to ALLY X, so you should compare both on thier own exclusive merits rather than thier predecessors. The SD card thing is no longer an issue for the X. I'm not sure how many places you are doing updates from. I only do them in Windows and Armory Crate. Hibernate works perfectly for me and finally you can play literally anything in Windows. Your only real criticism is ease of use, which is fair. Windows isn't the best for handhelds. However when Xbox OS comes out, it will super charge the Ally X and this will no longer be a talking point. The X is just superior. It just is.
Yeah you summed up everything tbh but when I saw his SD OLED vs Ally X comparison I knew he was biased towards SD OLED (and I own both and love my SD OLED)
I have completely abandoned armory crate and just use Ghelper now. I also tried using handheld companion but i just like the simplicity of Ghelper, but both are better than armory crate.
a good bunch of your problems can be fixed if you reinstall windows with a usb just like a pc and to not use armory crate and use ghelper and use rufus to make a windows usb key. the amd driver thing you need to take it from the asus website directly. plus the sleep problem is gonna be fixed to
I’m going to go out a limb and say this but I doubt he knows what any of that means if he’s having major using with the handheld just going on sleep mode instead of switching it to Hibernation mode
Windows store also has to be checked for updates, unless you've set it auto update. To be fair, updating the Rog Ally X is very easy. Steam OS just makes it easier.
11:40 , if you are updating AMD graphics drivers for Z1E with AMD directly then they obviously aren’t going to work. Any graphics driver updates will come from Asus directly, via armoury crate. I’ve definitely not had a single game refuse to load due to outdated graphics drivers.
When you update AMD drivers it messes the system. I have done this on all of my AMD laptops and I don't know why it does this! That's why I left it on the Ally. It doesn't seem to recognise it.
i have an rog ally z1e and i love it the battery life is trash but for my uses i power it up way more then my steam deck lcd ....minly cuz u use windows for more then just gaming
I would like the ally X, but i have the Asus OG Ally and i never trust asus again since my SD card issue it take forever to recognize there is a problem... Valve have a way more valuable warranty : they even replace my case when my dog eat it !! Full steamdeck (Years and years support : the even update lcd software and make battery life better after the oled is out) for me, and i wait for the steamdeck 2....
Yea Asus isnt even offering extended warranty for the Ally X here in Canada yet. Theres just a "sorry were not offering it at this time" message on their website....kinda like they are expecting the fucker to break. Its a $1250 handheld after tax here in Canada...i bought one anyway but i baby the bastard.
Dude with updates, like he never had a pc. Secondly, it's easier through asus app, it's like center for updates, and windows updates by itself, u don't have to do anything about it
cringe title. the 1% lowest fps and 0.1% are more relevant than that outlier second where the device dips to absolute minimum. as far as I remember, you're supposed to use the drivers from asus for z1 extreme. the RDR2 issue might be fixed by using "borderless gaming" tool. it's a must have on windows. maybe give bazzite a try.
Sorry but Asus doesn't consistently honor their warranty. Owned first ally worked great for 6 months then sd card died. They never fixed it. The best buy would no longer offer rmas for them which Asus forces you to use if you bought from Best buy. Now the power plug died and they still won't warranty it yet it's still "under warranty". There are going to be many options in this field. I had an issue with my steam deck they gave me a new one.
My Ally X is my primary gaming device and I dual boot both W11 and Bazzite. When I’m at my desk I have it docked in W11 so I can use my RTX 4070 Super eGPU. When I’m on the go or traveling I use Bazzite for its sleep function, low power settings and accessibility. You NEED to change sleep settings to hibernate I don’t know why this was never stated in the video. After that putting the device on sleep is easier. The Ally X has the best versatility compared to any handheld IMO. For someone who is not very tech savvy and doesn’t want to tweak settings to get the best performance and functionality than yeah the Steamdeck is more user friendly

Question: Should you buy the Ally X now or wait for the next Ally with Z2 extreme ship ????
i would wait
I'd rather get better 1%lows than higher framerates. The Deck is the winner for me.
It just is.
@@GreyishSoul Steam deck frame rate is GARBAGE in comparison to VRR + lossless scaling/frame gen. It is superior
Remember. This is this is this man's opinion. Does not mean he is right.
Why not test what runs the best at the lowest setting or medium? I never really use my SD on max settings. Maybe it's just me
a good bunch of your problems can be fixed if you reinstall windows with a usb just like a pc and to not use armory crate and use ghelper and use rufus to make a windows usb key.
the amd driver thing you need to take it from the asus website directly. plus the sleep problem is gonna be fixed to
I’m going to go out a limb and say this but I doubt he knows what any of that means if he’s having major using with the handheld just going on sleep mode instead of switching it to Hibernation mode
Windows store also has to be checked for updates, unless you've set it auto update. To be fair, updating the Rog Ally X is very easy. Steam OS just makes it easier.
Windows giveth and windows taketh. Here’s to hoping valve succeeds with their steamOS project giving us a genuine second option.
17:40 what kind of monster holds a controller like that? Do you want arthritis
You are blinded.
:15 i think its good that theres cheaper predecessor because the later models of both are pretty expensive.
I play a lot sm2 on deck, try using frame gen. I was getting constant 40-50 fps but of course everything was set to low
Nice review!
Thank you! Cheers!
I have rog ally x since 3 months, I've never faced that not load the game every time I play it runs immediately
i have an rog ally z1e and i love it the battery life is trash but for my uses i power it up way more then my steam deck lcd ....minly cuz u use windows for more then just gaming
yeah that was my experience with the OG ally too, but if you just get an extra batttery pack, not super convenient but its a work around
Hey all, Adaxum is an interesting project that could have potential in the E-commerce space.
Try bazzite
No just no. You have the ally x set up wrong. It does not ever stutter to 3 fps in those games. In red dead the lowest I got was 47
Took a measured position in Adaxum. Hoping the project delivers on its promises.
I want it with oled!
The Adaxum ADX presale is progressing well. Glad I got my tokens before it’s too late.
Glad I got into Adaxum during the presale. The project has some promising elements.
Dude with updates, like he never had a pc. Secondly, it's easier through asus app, it's like center for updates, and windows updates by itself, u don't have to do anything about it
There is no problem in a matter of fact I'm going to play fallout right now lol
cringe title.
the 1% lowest fps and 0.1% are more relevant than that outlier second where the device dips to absolute minimum.
as far as I remember, you're supposed to use the drivers from asus for z1 extreme.
the RDR2 issue might be fixed by using "borderless gaming" tool. it's a must have on windows.
maybe give bazzite a try.
I dual boot mine
Sorry but Asus doesn't consistently honor their warranty. Owned first ally worked great for 6 months then sd card died. They never fixed it. The best buy would no longer offer rmas for them which Asus forces you to use if you bought from Best buy. Now the power plug died and they still won't warranty it yet it's still "under warranty". There are going to be many options in this field. I had an issue with my steam deck they gave me a new one.
Feeling cautiously optimistic about Adaxum’s potential. Got my ADX tokens today.
my problem is i too poor
no serious person is using windows on the ally x tf?
call me a silly goose then 🪿
My Ally X is my primary gaming device and I dual boot both W11 and Bazzite.
Adaxum is still under the radar, but it could gain momentum soon.
ADX Adaxum is worth a look if you’re exploring new projects this year.
Took a closer look at Adaxum and decided to take a small position in the presale.
Joined the Adaxum presale early. Hoping it turns out to be a good long-term move.
so many bots in the comments
Took a chance on Adaxum during the presale. Let’s see how it plays out.
wow! shadow deleting comments that disagree with you. glad i commented now I know not to support anymore 👍
i haven't ever deleted a comment, doesn't align with my ideals, i would love for you to comment however you feel, especially disagreement
i dont know what was said, but youtube does delete or hide comments it views have broken their agreements.
Bro don't blame the author of the video right away because there are many reasons for the comment to disappear.
It happens to me all the time and I don't use hate speech or anything like that. Just YT...
TH-cam eats comments all the time. How is this still not understood? It's been going on for a decade.
Hi everyone, Adaxum seems like a project with potential. I’m keeping an eye on it after joining the presale.
Adaxum leads DeFi’s next evolution.
Adaxum stands out from competitors.
ADX Adaxum rewards early adopters generously.
Keeping an eye on Adaxum. The project seems promising enough to have potential upside.
Adaxum is still early, but it has the potential to grow into something significant.
The Adaxum ADX tokenomics look reasonable, and the presale seems like a good entry point.
Adaxum: The future is here.
Adaxum’s presale is selling out quickly. Might be worth a closer look for those interested.
Adaxum’s presale demand keeps climbing.
ADAXUM has a unique angle with its E-commerce focus. Glad I got in during the presale.
