- hey y'all! i'm back again with another edit, this time featuring everyone's least favourite character umbridge:)
this was super fun to make although I must admit, rewatching umbridge scenes for hours did start to get annoying very quickly haha.

She’s just so relatable as a villain. Not many of us have dealt with a magical Dark Lord, but all of us have had that _one_ teacher or person of authority over us.
I have dealt with 5 teachers like umbridge
I feel so sorry for you.
The different kinds of evil displayed. Voldemort struck fear and awe in his followers and used it as a means of manipulation, keeping sadists close to his side and encouraging the worst in his followers. Grindelwald did not rely on fear and had the respect of many of his followers who were not necessarily evil, he made use of their own fears and insecurities to point them in a dark twisted direction. Umbridge uses the system as a means to sadistically take advantage of people, she is not necessarily feared by people but can be deadly nuisance.
You can put the following comparisons.
Voldemort = Stalin
Grindelwald = Hitler
Umbridge = Whatever corrupt politician or person in power under a complex political/business structure you can think of

Fun fact: there’s an encyclopedia of magical animals from the entire Wizarding World, in which, a dark wizard tried to cast patronus to scare off another patronus, but the patronus became measles that ate the wizard instead, so for some odd reason, Dolores ISN’T A DARK WIZARD???

Look at Harry's hearing, the interrogation of Karkarov, etc. Due process is not guaranteed by wizarding law, so the ministry has the power to weaponize their authority at any time. Its only social pressure or personal prestige (Dumbledore) that make them listen.
Reminder that in the books, she happily sent muggleborns to a fate worse than death (Dementors) once she got the slightest bit of power in the Ministry.
In fact, she was SO happy with her job that she could literally produce a patronus charm.

Honestly I think the film did her better, in the books she looked like a toad, but in the movies even though she looks kind and charming, but when given authority, her facade quickly drops and shows how rotten she is

2 things. First, "dolor" is "pain" in latin, so "dolores" actually means "pains". Second, Imelda Staunton rocked the hell out of that part. Felt like the character had jumped right from inside the pages.
Dolores is a Spanish name meaning Sadness or woeful. Umbridge comes from the term "to take umbridge of something" which means to take offence. So her name literally means "sad/woeful/painful offence". Dang

I heard that her friend called her to say she would be perfect for the part of Umbridge and so she read it and when the description of "small, squat, ugly, toadlike" came up she was like "thanks a lot" 😭 her friend basically called her toadlike and ugly without calling her toadlike and ugly

@@silvernightray7701 It could be that a Horcrux affects her differently due to her already twisted personality. She probably already was sadistic in the first place, and since Voldemort is as well it didnt cause the same conflict and friction as it would in a good person. In fact it might have even enhanced her sadistic nature, but its hard to tell.
Even her patronus was pretty weak compared to that one of Harry or Snape.

Umbridge went from being a character we hated in the book, to a character we loved to hate in the movies.
Same thing with Lockhart. Kenneth Branagh pulled a great performance for him as well.

That scene with Snape and him having to be polite to her was priceless, not going to lie.
I don’t know if that during Harry’s trial, when the actor had taken very short pauses was intentional or if she was just remembering her lines, but it made the scene all the much better, like Umbridge was trying to hold in her anger and keep her calm and well mannered guise up.
Especially since she had to keep her secret, which isn't mentioned in the film at all.

They did the casting so well for her omg she perfectly captured what I imagine her to be in the book
What's funny is that propably most of the teachers could easily kick her ass, especially Minerva and Snape. Umbridge is truly a spitefull being and her actress nailed her utter evilness perfectly.

Let's just give Imelda Staunton her props. It is HARD to be so good at a villainous role that you literally feel yourself HATING the character. Umbridge is the rare character that truly transferred from the page to the screen perfectly and her portrayal was the reason why. She was incredible with that syrupy sweet EVIL that lurked within.
Agreed! Imelda is easily the best actress in the HP series. And that's saying a lot, considering how many brilliant actors are in this series. She plays Umbridge like she just sprung to life from the books,exactly how I imagined her.

I love the noticeable imagery of the film, especially at 1:21 because Umbridge takes a step on the stairs just to be higher elevated than McGonigal.
