- hey y'all! i'm back again with another edit, this time featuring everyone's least favourite character umbridge:)
this was super fun to make although I must admit, rewatching umbridge scenes for hours did start to get annoying very quickly haha.

She’s just so relatable as a villain. Not many of us have dealt with a magical Dark Lord, but all of us have had that _one_ teacher or person of authority over us.
I have dealt with 5 teachers like umbridge
I feel so sorry for you.
The different kinds of evil displayed. Voldemort struck fear and awe in his followers and used it as a means of manipulation, keeping sadists close to his side and encouraging the worst in his followers. Grindelwald did not rely on fear and had the respect of many of his followers who were not necessarily evil, he made use of their own fears and insecurities to point them in a dark twisted direction. Umbridge uses the system as a means to sadistically take advantage of people, she is not necessarily feared by people but can be deadly nuisance.
You can put the following comparisons.
Voldemort = Stalin
Grindelwald = Hitler
Umbridge = Whatever corrupt politician or person in power under a complex political/business structure you can think of

Look at Harry's hearing, the interrogation of Karkarov, etc. Due process is not guaranteed by wizarding law, so the ministry has the power to weaponize their authority at any time. Its only social pressure or personal prestige (Dumbledore) that make them listen.

Honestly I think the film did her better, in the books she looked like a toad, but in the movies even though she looks kind and charming, but when given authority, her facade quickly drops and shows how rotten she is
The actress did an incredible job portraying her.
What sucks is the actress of Delores absolutely hated playing her but the fact that she was still able to pull it off so well just shows how skilled she is

The wizard that Harry embodied with the poly juice was just as evil as her and wanted to destroy families and everyone was scared of him .. all I am trying to say is that Dolores wasnt alone or worse than many others - there were hundreds of here which is how Voldemort got to the power, only through followers that supported his doings and Umbridge supported them as well even when she never was a deatheater she was evil enough to be one
Still she was nowhere evil enough to be compared to Voldemort - she was just your average deatheater not any worse than Luciius etc and still better than Fenrir Greyback or Bellatrix Lestrange who were batshit insane
She also sent the dementors to Privet Drive to get Harry expelled.
Even the actress said her skin crawled when she said those lines. Poor woman… seriously deserves a medal for having to play this role

And that was while wearing a horcrux, when even Harry couldn't bear it. She had her Patronus, as she was condemning people, while still being under the influence of Voldemort's horcrux. AND SHE WAS HAPPY!

She probably already was sadistic in the first place, and since Voldemort is as well it didnt cause the same conflict and friction as it would in a good person. In fact it might have even enhanced her sadistic nature, but its hard to tell.
Even her patronus was pretty weak compared to that one of Harry or Snape.
The fact that the actor can make you hate their character so much on purpose shows how good she is at her job.

Even the ACTRESS who played Umbridge, Imelda Staunton, hates the character. She said the most difficult scene to do was the "I must not tell lies" scene because she actually felt bad. And yes, she did slap Harry

One time, I heard that a Dementor kissed her, and it died.
Funny thing is, the person who plays her is perfectly nice irl. It really shows her acting ability to make you absolutely hate her character so so much.
I heard that her friend called her to say she would be perfect for the part of Umbridge and so she read it and when the description of "small, squat, ugly, toadlike" came up she was like "thanks a lot" 😭 her friend basically called her toadlike and ugly without calling her toadlike and ugly
I don’t know if that during Harry’s trial, when the actor had taken very short pauses was intentional or if she was just remembering her lines, but it made the scene all the much better, like Umbridge was trying to hold in her anger and keep her calm and well mannered guise up.
Especially since she had to keep her secret, which isn't mentioned in the film at all.

2 things. First, "dolor" is "pain" in latin, so "dolores" actually means "pains". Second, Imelda Staunton rocked the hell out of that part. Felt like the character had jumped right from inside the pages.
Dolores is a Spanish name meaning Sadness or woeful. Umbridge comes from the term "to take umbridge of something" which means to take offence. So her name literally means "sad/woeful/painful offence". Dang

Let's just give Imelda Staunton her props. It is HARD to be so good at a villainous role that you literally feel yourself HATING the character. Umbridge is the rare character that truly transferred from the page to the screen perfectly and her portrayal was the reason why. She was incredible with that syrupy sweet EVIL that lurked within.
Agreed! Imelda is easily the best actress in the HP series. And that's saying a lot, considering how many brilliant actors are in this series. She plays Umbridge like she just sprung to life from the books,exactly how I imagined her.

It’s not a height insecurity it’s about power - she puts herself above her by stepping higher than her that was the intention and Mc Gonagall stepped back closer to the students as a gesture after saying „disloyalty“ to show her stand (not following Dolores)

And it wasn't that he cared about his education, he was afraid of Dumbledore and up until the end of Order he didn't want the ministry to know he was back, because you can see he clearly didn't care about attacking anybody shortly after Dumbledore's death, hence the short reign of Scrimgeor and the attack at Bill and Fleur's wedding.

Same I had a french teacher like Umbridge, she was a horrible person who enjoyed making students suffer, she was fired for her abusive behavior to students, I became a focus of her abusive behavior for some reason
My 6th grade english teacher was like Umbridge. ...At least towards me. She hated me for no reason and I actually mean that. It got so bad that I started refusing to do anything for her. I passed with a D (70). Needless to say I transferred after that year.

As a kid when reading the OotP book, i remember it being such a pain to get thru the darn book cause of how much of a pain it was cause Umbridge was in the book. Be honest folks, this is all of us least favorite book cause of Umbridge and the death of Sirius at the end.
