I have the highest respect for Dame Maggie Smith. She was battling cancer during the filming of Deathly Hallows, but the fact that you couldn't even tell, shows how badass she is. She owned the role of McGonagall.

Purple Queen ive always said that too! I called her the mother of hogwarts because if hogwarts or any of the students were in trouble she was always there to protect them
The most underrated character in this entire series... book 5 was great for her, but book 7 had my favorite scenes... her being the one to scream out when Voldemort declared Harry dead, and the fact that she took great pride having Harry in her house, not because of his fame, but because she genuinely cared about him, in sort of that stern grandmother way. Forever salute you Minerva.
Her fighting the auror's when they came to try and throw Hagrid out. Dueling the group 1 to (forget how many) and taking 7 stunning spells to the chest
I mean the woman spent a whole day outside the Dursleys' house without even knowing for certain if Lily and James were dead. She always cared much more than she let on.
It amazes me that this woman was going through cancer treatments later on in the series and she still managed to act her ASS off. She is an amazing talent and I'm so glad she was the one to play such an important character.
Half Blood Prince I believe. There's the scene where she says to Harry I thought you wanted to become an Auror. she looked very pale/aged in that scene but looks a lot better during Deathly Hallows :)
Kristie McDonaldYh. She looked pale and edited too but I thought it made her loon more ill..She did so well :) almost a metaphor. She was battlling cancer and her character was battling too. She looks a lot better now.
+Liam Geoghegan Just like her character, she cant be killed off that easily :D Seriously tho, McGonnagall and Snape were probably the most powerful wizards on Harry's side (well, besides Dumbledore of course). And there was no better person to portray McGonnagall than her. She fits so perfectly! (sry for my bad english xD)
Here's one book exclusive quip that I love. Minerva: “Did you scream at Umbridge?” Harry: “Yes, professor.” Minerva: “And you called her a liar?” Harry: “Yes, professor.” Minerva: “... Have a biscuit Potter.”
But was actually filmed if I remember, another of many deleted scenes that didn't made the cut. Also one of my favorite deleted scenes and moments with Harry and McGonagall, she always cared a lot for Harry and Dame Smith sure showed beautifully
i can imagine her saying the same thing to James if she found out they were Animagi... McGonagall: *you mean to say that yourself, Mr Black, and Mr Pettigrew all learned extremely dangerous and advanced magic, and managed to successfully turn yourselves into illegal Animagi?* James: *yes Minnie* McGonagall: *To keep Mr Lupin company during his full-moon transformations?* James: *yes Minnie* McGonagall: *hAvE a bIsCuIT pOttEr*
It took Umbridge one step and ghastly high heels to even get CLOSE, too. They did a good job blocking it so that McGonagall seems on the offensive, body langauge wise, the entire time.
When writers have their books turned into movies, they're allowed to give a "wishlist" to the producers. JK Rowling said she always imagined Maggie Smith as McGonagall. I don't know how many people were on her wishlist, but i know that two people who were on there for certain were Maggie Smith for McGonagall and Robbie Coltrane for Hagrid.
@@qwertyqwerty6099 I only just found out last month that Rickman was her first and ONLY choice for Snape. They almost cast Tim Roth before she got her way.
@@felmargego2534 A lot of the actors were picked based almost entirely on looks. Vernon, Ron, Hermione, Lockhart, Dumbledore (first one) Bellatrix and Malfoy, for example.
I love how when Shape has his wand out everyone just stares but the second Minerva has hers out everyone backs away and screams. They just know better for who to be afraid off
I don't mean to compare their skills, but I think Snape was avoiding a possible conflict as otherwise it is quite possible to cause collatoral damage. Look at how he deflects Mcgonnagal's attacks to take out two baddies at the back before he leaves through the window.
"'Hem, hem,' said Professor Umbridge. 'Yes?' said Professor McGonagall, turning round, her eyebrows so close together they seemed to form one long, severe line. 'I was just wondering, Professor, whether you received my note telling you of the date and time of your inspec - ' 'Obviously I received it, or I would have asked you what you are doing in my classroom,' said Professor McGonagall, turning her back firmly on Professor Umbridge. Many of the students exchanged looks of glee. 'As I was saying: today, we shall be practicing the altogether more difficult Vanishment of mice. Now, the Vanishing Spell - ' 'Hem, hem.' 'I wonder,' said Professor McGonagall in cold fury, turning on Professor Umbridge, 'how you expect to gain an idea of my usual teaching methods if you continue to interrupt me? You see, I do not generally permit people to talk when I am talking.' Professor Umbridge looked as though she had just been slapped in the face. She did not speak, but straightened the parchment on her clipboard and began scribbling furiously." - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
The true most badass moment is in the books when Harry is having his careers consultation and she says to Umbridge "I should have made my meaning plainer. I meant all defense against the dark arts test SET BY A COMPETENT TEACHER!"
@@in.meraki Snape qualified but Dumbledore never let him coz he knew that post was jinxed by Voldemort when he interviewed and no teacher would last more than 1 year and everyone knows Snape has to be around

@@assadarlingtoni McGonagall would turn you into a water goblet at once and then she just has to step on you. U think Snape would brew a Draught of Living Death in 5 seconds to kill u??
@@kristinvagula2821 Snape is a powerful wizard. Why would you think just because he's a potions wizard means he's not powerful? We all know he actually wanted to teach defense against the dark arts cause he knew so much of them. This dude has created his own spells such as Sectumsempra which is extremely dangerous spell and he's expert in it, he's the only one who can fly without a broom besides Voldemort, he's master at mind reading as well. He could block his mind from Voldemort each time he wanted to see into his mind. He has great knowledge in dark spells and helped Dumbledore not to die instantly after he destroyed the ring. He duelled with Slughorn, Flitwick and Mcgonnagall all at the same time. The reason he "lost" to Mcgonnagall was because he was on their side (watch Snape's memories) and didn't want to hurt anyone, he also eliminated 2 Carrows with one spell while being under attack so the school could be free. Snape is not to be underestimated. Before mcgonnagall can even say "Veraverto" she will be on the ground bloody scars all over her body
@@assadarlingtoni Yes, Snape is a very powerful wizard, but also is McGonagall, and I personally would back away the moment McGonagall even glares on me 😂 AND as Snape is on good side, I don't think he would use these Dark Spells so it is as scary as McGonagall and it does not matter who we fight because I would end up dead anyway
“And his name is VOLDEMORT! He’s going to try and kill you anyway Filius, you may as well use it!” That is by far my favorite McGonagall line from the films
The Duel at 5:24 always gets me a little emotional. Snape not daring to defend himself out of respect. And the pain in McGonagall’s face. Should have been #1

McGonagall: Five points will be taken from Gryffindor *Realizes shes the Gryffindor guardian* McGonagall: *_fIVe pOINtS wILl bE AWaRdED tO eACH oF yOU_*
According to the book, she definitely will take her house points without hesitation if she finds her own pupils do wrong things. Unlike Snape who intently favor Slytherin, his own house. This is what I like from Minerva.
It was in the book though. 'Is it true, Mr Potter?' 'Is what true?' said Harry rather angrily - 'Professor?' he added in an attempt to sound more polite 'Is it true that you shouted at Professor Umbridge?' 'Yes,' said Harry. 'You called her a liar?' 'Yes.' 'You told her He Who Must Not Be Named is back?' 'Yes.' Professor McGonagall sat down behind her desk, frowning at Harry. Then she said, 'Have a biscuit, Potter.' 'Have - what?' 'Have a biscuit,' she repeated impatiently, indicating a tartan tin lying on top of one of the piles of papers on her desk. 'And sit down.'
Three times that McGonagall became headmistress 2nd year after Dumbledore went away: a student gets taken away 6th year for a day after Dumbledore's death : performs her best and longest friend's funeral 7th year after flying off snape : leads the school to the greatest war in history
Now, say that 5 times faster... Oooh that's where the meme was born! Btw the italian translation for that was amazing. "Balbettante bambocciosa banda di babbuini"
No matter what anyone says, I will always have a deep level of respect for Minerva McGonagall... she is more powerful than people give her credit for..
Yeah, perhaps she’s the most powerful witch of her generation, being skilled enough to duel Snape and even Voldemort himself both of whom are masters of dark magic.
snape: Stands to fight with wand out children: Well shit. minerva: Grabs wand and gets ready for a fight children: FUCK. MOVE OUT OF THE FUCKING WAY. BEAST IS OUT. HIDE BITCHES HIDE!!!
I absolutely love how when Snape pulls out his wands the students are worrried, but when Mcgonagall pulls out her wand they panic and rush out the way.
Snape looks absolutely devastated when McGonagall attacks him. He sacrifices so much for the world and no one knows or gives him credit. Apart from Harry that is.
@@comedicsociopathy it's tragic, though, because he is a tragic hero that develops without anyone seeing his development, including the audience. His feelings about Harry, and eventual empathy towards Harry and disgust for Dumbledore's reasoning about Harry's need to die betrays Snape's shift into something totally different than year 1. He could have been a father figure to Harry but chose instead to remain attached to feeling aggrieved, separated, and martyred himself. He's what is known as a tragic foil.
I was so happy when the last book revealed she was promoted to Headmistress. If anyone could fill Dumbledore's whimsical shoes, it would be Minerva's firm yet kind hand.
My favourite scene with Mcgonagall is when she says “I’ve always wanted to use that spell” she says it like she’s young again, and she gets so excited it quite amusing, I think her confidence is tested in deathly hallows 2, given she’s the only strong standing teacher left 🙌🏻
I love how everyone backs the f*** up when Minerva draws out her wand in the duel. Even Snape looks terrified for a second like "Oh s*** this is happening."
et27able hence why i said he would have to severely injure or possibly even kill her to win. there wouldnt be a danger of killing her if she wasnt a threat. he would have to go all out.

Filch: “Students out of bed! Students in the corridor!” McGonagall: “They’re supposed to be out of bed, you blithering idiot!” Classic insult. Professor McGonagall is a badass... long live Maggie Smith. 🖤🌹
When I was in the cinema and watched the film for the first time and the scene with magical ball covering the castle (I don't remember this exactly) came I flooded with tears.
Because we would've loved this school to be ours. As far as I'm concerned, I started reading HP while being like 8 years old, so it's a huge part of my childhood. Hogwarts represented a new home and a second chance to the main character, who had always been an unhappy and lonely child back in the day. It's like a whole world that's about to be ended and to collapse.
No kidding i literally get goosebumps when minerva says "hogwarts is threatened, protect the castle, man the boundaries, do your duty to the school" 😭❤💣
And the funny thing is he was faking it. Notice how Snape deliberately deflects McGonnagall's spells to the 2 death eaters behind him, knocking them out before running.
The Battle between McGonagall and Snape always actually makes me emotional and sends shivers down my spine. McGonagall staring down Snape, someone she thought she could trust, and sending powerful spells his way in an attempt to kill him. And Snape, someone she actually can trust, defending himself, taking out the carrows in the process

Minerva McGonagall could've been a better headmistress than Dumbledore, she was unbiased, took the safety of her students seriously, was a badass witch and harry could have turned to her for help so many times but nvm. Thankful jk rowling didn't kill her off in the series.
Neha Ganji i know? it was also mentioned at the ending of deathly hallows that she became the headmistress. I just meant in case of when Dumbledore was alive.
Nah Albus was amazing, she’d be better then Dolores. Actually anyone would be better than her what am i saying lol Umbridge < McGonagall < Albus (Dumbledore)
i always loved her the most. she really did seem like she cared most about the students and the general nature of attending Hogwarts. Fun, learning, and adventure.
Fun facts about McGonnagall: She was married at some point during her life, though he died several years into their marriage, she played for the Gryffindor Quidditch Team, she was a prefect and Head Girl, she was seriously considered for Ravenclaw House, JK Rowling stated that she would have defeated Snape during their duel in the seventh book, though narrowly.
Minerva McGonagall If I remember correctly, Pottermore has these tidbits and many more. I think they even have McGonagall's entire life history as penned by J.K Rowling. Check it out, it's pretty cool!
everyone knows not to fuck with the teacher who puts students lives above her own lol (that and i'm pretty sure the only wizard at the school who was stronger then her was dumbledore)
Yes, in the book it was obvious there was no intent on his part to duel McGonagall seriously, he was still playing his part in Dumbledore’s grand design to defeat Voldemort and Albus knew that Severus is a key player in this.
Also, right before the duel ends, as Snape is apperating away, he goes and grabs both of their wands just to be sure they can't harm the students. Snape = the real MVP OG
Fun fact: Alan Rickman was told Snape's true motive from the very beginning by J.K. Rowling, but he kept it a secret from everyone and acted accordingly to that motive. So when you watch the movies, Rickman acted in a way Snape would with the motive we learned from the final book. It's quite brilliant.
@Amber McGonagall would be throwing hands and everyone would be chanting "FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!" Dumbledore would sit back and be all like "Yep, I'll allow this."

Forever salute you Minerva.
I cried so many, when I read that she screamed "NO!" My heart was broken 🕊 I love McGonagall so much

Liam Geoghegan thanks! I couldn't remember the specific film. I just remember reading that she had a wheelchair and would sit in it between takes.

Minerva: “Did you scream at Umbridge?”
Harry: “Yes, professor.”
Minerva: “And you called her a liar?”
Harry: “Yes, professor.”
Minerva: “... Have a biscuit Potter.”
I mean Harry WAS telling the truth so Minerva couldn't really punish him for that
It's a crying shame that line didn't make it into the final cut for the film.
"have a biscuit Potter" too bad they didn't include that in the movie
But was actually filmed if I remember, another of many deleted scenes that didn't made the cut. Also one of my favorite deleted scenes and moments with Harry and McGonagall, she always cared a lot for Harry and Dame Smith sure showed beautifully
And the "it unscrews the other way"
i can imagine her saying the same thing to James if she found out they were Animagi...
McGonagall: *you mean to say that yourself, Mr Black, and Mr Pettigrew all learned extremely dangerous and advanced magic, and managed to successfully turn yourselves into illegal Animagi?*
James: *yes Minnie*
McGonagall: *To keep Mr Lupin company during his full-moon transformations?*
James: *yes Minnie*
McGonagall: *hAvE a bIsCuIT pOttEr*

Not at all. Merely your medieval method
It was in the books.
Yeah, taken directly from the book.
It took Umbridge one step and ghastly high heels to even get CLOSE, too. They did a good job blocking it so that McGonagall seems on the offensive, body langauge wise, the entire time.
Yes and when umbridge said that loyalty was questionable, professor mcgonagall stepped down towards the students because her loyalty was towards them
"Take Weasley with you, he looks far too happy." Second best line after animating the statues- still gives me goosebumps!
This role was made for Dame Maggie Smith. She's wonderful

Many of the students exchanged looks of glee. 'As I was saying: today, we shall be practicing the altogether more difficult Vanishment of mice. Now, the Vanishing Spell - '
'Hem, hem.'
'I wonder,' said Professor McGonagall in cold fury, turning on Professor Umbridge, 'how you expect to gain an idea of my usual teaching methods if you continue to interrupt me? You see, I do not generally permit people to talk when I am talking.'

He could block his mind from Voldemort each time he wanted to see into his mind. He has great knowledge in dark spells and helped Dumbledore not to die instantly after he destroyed the ring. He duelled with Slughorn, Flitwick and Mcgonnagall all at the same time. Snape looks absolutely devastated when McGonagall attacks him. He sacrifices so much for the world and no one knows or gives him credit. Apart from Harry that is.
He did that for his obsession with Lily. Everything Snape did was selfish. He's the character that shows how to not deal with things, it's great.
Comedic Sociopathy I know, but he still does what he does, regardless of the reasoning behind his actions.
After Harry defeated Voldemort he made sure that the world know what Snape have done
@@comedicsociopathy it's tragic, though, because he is a tragic hero that develops without anyone seeing his development, including the audience. He could have been a father figure to Harry but chose instead to remain attached to feeling aggrieved, separated, and martyred himself. He's what is known as a tragic foil.
I feel like his selfish decisions lead to him being selfless, and we know how much of a drama queen he could be he wouldn't want to admit it.

Jackie McCann Actually everyone started parting like the read sea when Snape pulls out his wand
Minerva McGonagall could've been a better headmistress than Dumbledore, she was unbiased, took the safety of her students seriously, was a badass witch and harry could have turned to her for help so many times but nvm. Thankful jk rowling didn't kill her off in the series.
Yeah, but she became the headmistress after Snape. She is present in 'The Cursed Child'.
Neha Ganji i know? it was also mentioned at the ending of deathly hallows that she became the headmistress. I just meant in case of when Dumbledore was alive.
@@khushi4978 she was temporarily during chamber.
‘I agree but still i think dumbledore is so good, he and her should both be head tbh
Nah Albus was amazing, she’d be better then Dolores. Actually anyone would be better than her what am i saying lol
Umbridge < McGonagall < Albus (Dumbledore)
i always loved her the most. she really did seem like she cared most about the students and the general nature of attending Hogwarts.
How did you... Never mind, not going to question it.
Minerva McGonagall If I remember correctly, Pottermore has these tidbits and many more. I think they even have McGonagall's entire life history as penned by J.K Rowling. Check it out, it's pretty cool!
*Snape pulls out wand*
audible gasps
*Professor McGonagall pulls out wand*
RUN, RUN FOR YOU DAMN LIVES!
Love this scene!
They just know better.
everyone knows not to fuck with the teacher who puts students lives above her own lol (that and i'm pretty sure the only wizard at the school who was stronger then her was dumbledore)
Ookami inazuma nope snape was a really powerful and skilled wizard.
5:34 if you look closely snape deflects the curses onto the death eaters on purpose, foreshadowing that he is a good guy all along
IAmZeRealRiverr yup
yes he moves his wand left and right and the two death eaters die..
Yes, in the book it was obvious there was no intent on his part to duel McGonagall seriously, he was still playing his part in Dumbledore’s grand design to defeat Voldemort and Albus knew that Severus is a key player in this.
5:41
Also, right before the duel ends, as Snape is apperating away, he goes and grabs both of their wands just to be sure they can't harm the students. Snape = the real MVP OG
You could tell Snape didn't want to fight McGonagall. He didn't only respect her but she was his friend.
522nibbles She was his friend until he "killed" Dumbledore
Fun fact: Alan Rickman was told Snape's true motive from the very beginning by J.K. Rowling, but he kept it a secret from everyone and acted accordingly to that motive. So when you watch the movies, Rickman acted in a way Snape would with the motive we learned from the final book. It's quite brilliant.
Everyone knows it
she didn't look like she wanted to either...
@@zaffyxtr thank you!👌
"There are several things I would _like_ to say!"
She just can't say them in front of children.
She just can't say them in front of anybody
That’s what I thought too!
If she did it would stop being and all public movie
@Amber McGonagall would be throwing hands and everyone would be chanting "FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!"
Dumbledore would sit back and be all like "Yep, I'll allow this."
CJCroen1393 McGonnagal would instantly turn Umb*tch into a pile of pinkish dust 😂😂😂
