This video was made for me..my parents teach yoga all day and i must get ready for masters entrance exams so studying over 5 hours a day is essential!THANKS Derek
THANK YOU! I’ve been playing since elementary school & I recently picked it back up. To avoid being too loud, I’ve played outside (attacked by mosquitoes - sweat through clothes), in my truck cab(very uncomfortable), at my storage unit (there’s no AC!), and many other places. I’m gonna get myself one of those cloth mutes & then bury myself in blankets while I play. Thank you!!!
Wow.. this is GREAT, perfect timing we are leaving for a trip a week from today and I was concerned how I was going to practice inside the RV. Thank you Derek, keep up the good work.
For my alto, I took bubble wrap, rolled it up and put it in the bottom of the neck, and took that bristled stick cleaner thing (dont know what its called) and put it in the top of the neck where the mouthpiece would go, then put the mouthpiece on, and to my surprise it's actually quiet.
Great tips. For years, I've been using a rolled up T-Shirt stuffed down my bell; this works great, but as you mentioned, the low range of the horn is inoperable. Also, it throws off the overtone series for altissimo.
Good hints, bravo! I always lived in flats inside old XIX century houses and no neighborhood never complained for my sax practice. Then, six months ago, I changed my home and now I'm leaving in a "modern" flat: after only 2 weeks all my neighborhood began to hate me, so I stopped every practice. I must o go in a parking like a busker (I love the busker life, but it is forbidden in my hometown).
The struggles of wood shedding! So glad you posted! I thought I was the only one that had that problem.....lol. My neighbors hear my playing/practicing and comment when I run into them.
That’s great! Actually I’m in Germany and ja people don’t like listen the sax more than an hour a think (I’m in a flat) so I’m using my shirts inside the bell etc.
switching mouthpieces and reeds can also lower the sound volume I guess.. like mpieces which have large opening and reeds with larger number are harder to control, tougher and thus louder.. and If you can easily control your sound you can play softer and quiter.. I have a mpiece which sounds quiet and bleak, I always disliked it) and now I think I could use it to play more quiet... but the problem is that you need to practice on the mpiece that you are going to play all the time later
I wish me and the rest of the listeners could send photo's of our setups here :) I just received my first saxophone today and i'm playing on it for the first time underneath blankets. It's awsome! But my mouth just gives up halfway my inspector gadget :P
I know this video is old but do you have an opinion on the mutes that go in the bell, neck, and mouthpiece? It’s like 3 pieces of foam that go in each and I’ve heard they’re pretty good.
Very interesting this bag, but you never tested those cases (saxmute or partner)? I think it only has tenor and loud, because I never saw baritone. On TH-cam you have videos showing. Success!
I live alone with my dog...in a two bedroom apartment. I can’t practice at All. I’d have these people outside burning effigies of me🤣 I’m only a beginner and played one or two notes and I had two different neighbors banging on my wall and floor😳 Soooo I Think a mute like yours or the big white plastic one is in my future. Just need to save up enough to buy it. The Good one is a little over $500. So it’ll take a few months as I’m on a fixed income. I’m 56 and retired navy/law enforcement. And since it’s too cold to fish, I’m stuck in my apt 99% of the time. Can’t wait to start playing 🎷😁
Only if you play quietly, because it will project the sound much more back at you than a bigger room would- hence why many people like to sing in the shower
I found that mutes as advertised just do not work. I tried out many different ways of blocking and finally arrived at a satisfactory solution as far as my requirements were concerned. There is a type of scrubber available made of very loosely put together plastic fibre also available in stainless steel. This can be easily taken apart and a small loosely packed roll made of the material about one half inch in diameter and some two inches long. This is inserted in the neck of the instrument . It will be found to be very effective as a mute but there will be pitch and intonation problems. So adjust the length and where the plug is placed to obtain acceptable performance. The plug may be placed in the mouthpiece and contrary to theory the pitch instead of being raised is actually lowered. As alternative to the plug is a length of a small bottle brush with the handle cut off and the length adjusted to suit. The brush is about one half inch in diameter and so will fit into a tenor or alto neck. Adjust the length till the desired performance is obtained.
Matthew Fry Good question. As of now I’m planning on each being at their own place, but maybe sometime down the road. We’ll see, but thanks for asking.
Nice video. Finding places to practice has been a nightmare and the biggest impediment to my progress on the horn over the past 18 years. The last place I was renting wouldn't let me play, so I had to go to the park in the middle of winter to practice...
I made a mouthpiece silencer from a large vitamin bottle - carved out the front flap opening a little and the mouthpiece fits snug - put a wash cloth in and a hole in the bottom and it works great - costs ? $ 0 I think it reduces the volume at least by half . You cannot tell by the video, I guess because the phone recording volume is maxed out . Maybe if I put the phone farther away during the sound test it would be apparent . However, you can hear the sound resonate in the room at the end of the first test . In the second test, you can tell there is no resounding resonance present . Here is a video showing what I have . th-cam.com/video/yHIAxdTOvk8/w-d-xo.html Maybe I will try making a saxophone cover-all silencer with a cardboard box and some shredded newspaper ...
It's too bad they don't make some form of electronic saxophone like they do for drums, pianos and guitar. That way you could plug in headphones and nobody would hear. I had to give up the saxophone when I moved into my condo. It was just too loud.

That blanket over the sax reminded me of E.T. in Elliott’s bicycle basket.. 🤷🏻♂️ The struggle is real.
I just got a sax and your vids have really helped me a lot. Thank you,💖💖💖

Thank you Derek, keep up the good work.
You really pointed out everything~ I hope some people will invent something like this for the Venova as well~

I’m a music college‘s student. But I have class home because Covid-19 . So I think my neighbors hate me until I found this video.
Thanks dude, you give me some good ideas

Almost 100k subs Derrick!!!!! Keep it up man!!
Thanks for sharing this.
Would like to get one of the mute systems from the Bird Sax Boutique but I can't find a web site for them. Can somebody help?
some good ideas ,thanks derek
What's that bag called? I can only find hard case types..
That's are great ideas! Thank you!
Am I correct in assuming that Saxophonists go into, not come out of, the closet?
when i use toung slapping ,spit go through the reed and mouth piece an make some noisy sound. how to avoid that ?

Bonus Tip: I practiced all through middle school and high school in a bathroom because it sounds like a concert hall
That's through

Will all the series your doing (Facebook, Instagram,ECT) be on TH-cam eventually?

Actually there is something like an electric saxophone. I don't remember what it is called but it has the same fingerings as saxophone
@@davidmajernik7066 i believe it's called an ewi
hey
maybe you can try a roland aerophone ae-10
I used EWI, sligthly different fingering, but better than none.
E mano ... Vem pro Brasil ....

Get whoever you’re annoying to get you a mute
Cut a mineral plastic bottle and get the top portion of bottle put it into your sax bell
Lol, 'like a volume knob' - *pulls invisible lever* Typical woodwind player
Ur da best
Hello
Why do people who deal in sound have the WORST vocal audio (using the cam mic)? Invest in a lav mic, and some editing into your demo sections.
Because they're more focused on their sound than their voice
дерек ты офигенно круто играешь но выражай свои мысли экстрактно как играешь гаммы. очень много воды
Bad instrument if the volume can't be reduced 🤪
