Thanks for the explanation! I really didn't like holding it one the side, because I felt uneven stress on my back. Now I understand what the difference is.
Hey, I saw you a month and a half ago on February 4th in Oklahoma, I really enjoy your videos and you give great advice. I have been playing tenor sax for about 4 years now and I have been having trouble getting a good tone. I tried what you said, to tilt the sax back more and it gave me a way better tone, thanks so much. You are the best! I hope you create more videos and continue to do what you love to do. Much love, CGM
This is excellent video! For beginners at least. If you have just started playing, read this!! I keep my tenor sax on the side. It suits me well. These hints are essential. I do exactly like this video shows although I play very differently. But the singularities are these: My body and my playing position determines where I hold the saxophone, not other way around. The most important thing is to have a natural posture without any tension. In the beginning you should practise posture. Play whatever you like but focus on good posture. Get rid of bendimg your body unnatural ways while playing, for ecample lifting your shoulder up while hitting upper notes. Focus on staying natural and relaxed all the time. Practise in front of mirror and take a video from your play. Use cellphone or whatever. That way you can actually see what is happrning all the time. When you play eithout tension, natural posture, everything becomes more effortless. You can then feel the music, jam along it with your body and the Saxophone becomes a natural part of you. You are able to play from your soul and with your whole body. Then you can focus on the music and the sound, the handling of the saxophone happens automatically and effortlessly at background. When everything is natural your Saxophone becomes a part of you and serves you just the way you want it to.
This is the same type of ergonomics I practice and teach for guitar, sit on the edge of a chair, make sure your wrist is not bent, &C. I have been playing for 40 years w/o pain in my wrists or hands, whereas both of my biological parents have had carpal tunnel surgeries. My old physician and both of my parents assured me it was a genetic trait. Thank you!
This is just what I needed! I come to sax because I damaged my left thumb learning guitar. So I really want to do this right from the beginning! Thanks, Derek.
Derek, I've been playing the tenor for 52 years and every time I pick it up, I fuss with neck/mouthpiece angles. I'm obsessive and perfectionistic and I let it drive me nuts. That said, I agree with you on all points. My Trevor James SC also has a very upswept neck. It's supposed to facilitate altissimo but I prefer a more level neck; I think it looks like I play a damn bass clarinet. ;>)
Hey Derek, I am a pretty tall guy and play lead alto sax in my high school big band, and what do you have to say about getting a natural angle while dealing with fronts? I wear glasses, which further complicates the issue, and have never been able to comfortably play using fronts.

Curious to hear what you say
Hey 😁
Qual a marca da boquilha?
Okay so I’m not weird when I put my sax in the middle
I'm 2 months in playing and this actually helped me because I was doing both the neck and jaw thing
thanks a lot!
