the egg shaped ones are actually very good, I owe a chinese version of e-sax and if it wasn't for it, i woudnt be able to practice at all... not great for tone practicing thou, but for for all of the other 703.470.349 exercises, this is awesome. (the sax mute one seems better)
Came here for the saxophones, stayed because of the 1440p clarity. This is one of the first videos I'm watching with this resolution, and it's just crazy how much clearer it is compared to 1080p.
Got the tenor e-Sax 2 years ago, without it I would never have been able to practice in my apartment. I just rest it on a cardboard box laid on my bed so I don't have to bear its weight. It's true it's hard to get the lowest notes, but it was that or no practice at all. Now I can play whenever I want, even at night :)
When I was learning the saxophone in the 80s-90s these mutes would have been great. My mum used to yell at me to play quietly which I could never do. I don't play saxophone now. Moved on to Guitar, bass, ukulele and other instruments now.
It seems the sax mute one is actually better than the more expensive alternative. The only benefit of the last one is having the line in/out of which I certainly don't require
I have two problems. Firstly, my neighbors are very close and are kept awake by the volume of my playing, and secondly, I am a novice, and play very badly, which makes that volume even more offensive. My solution is simply to wear a large poncho I made from lightweight fleece. It tempers the sound sufficiently to allow me to play into the wee hours without disturbing anyone but myself. My solution for when I play at my apartment is that I created a portable set of sound dampening panels which I hang on the wall with those removable hooks. I have eight 2 x 2 panels with foam eggcrate type material which I put in the corner of the room. When I practice I simply stand facing the corner. I have free movement, and the modular foam panels disburse and absorb enough of my sound that it is not that annoying to anyone but the dog.
It would be a hugely useful comparison of mutes, if, besides “playing unmuted” / “playing with mute”, there was also a reference piece of Mike Brown speaking in his normal voice, but having the recording mic volume set at the same level, as used later for sax recording. Then we would be able to compare not just “sax unmuted”/“sax muted”, but put it in comparison with the regular voice level.
Very nice video. I didn't know there exists sax mutes at all (I have to admit, I didn't even try to search for it, so this random youtube suggestion was actually the best one in a long time) Thank you for showing and testing multiple mutes for us.
Wish I knew about these 4 years ago and I wouldn't have had to give up the sax after 7 years of playing! Well I'm finally moving to somewhere where I can play again but I might invest in one of these just incase
Thanks for sharing! I had complaints about playing instruments before. So I had tried making a compromises etc. I'm considering getting an alto sax eventually but because it's a loud instrument I need to find a way to reduce/quiet the noise when around people/neighbors. This is awesome!
Excellent devices I never knew existed. PERFECT for people living in condo's with super thin walls/ceilings. Where sounds easily bleed through the windows and out into the shared hall. Handy for a loud instrument like the horns where you can't simply plug it into an amp/headphones like you can with an electric guitar/electric acoustic guitar. And for people who can't afford to build a acoustically treated/sound suppressing room (as in a recording studio).
I’m buying the E-Sax Whisper Mute tomorrow. Being stuck in an apartment for two months with no way to play. I’m a beginner and being Locked Down in my apartment for so long, I need an outlet. And the E-Sax Mute is the way to go for me. Thanks for the video. After years of playing the guitar, I’m picking up the alto saxophone and my brother, being from the Beatles Era, wants to play the guitar. He’s an educator, but I’ll be mentoring him instead. Once he gets his feet wet, I’ll turn him loose on the world. 🥴
Much better was the Sonny Rollins approach..."In 1959, feeling pressured by the unexpected swiftness of his rise to fame, Rollins took a three-year hiatus to focus on perfecting his craft. A resident of the Lower East Side of Manhattan with no private space to practice, he took his saxophone up to the Williamsburg Bridge to practice alone: "I would be up there 15 or 16 hours at a time spring, summer, fall and winter". (From Wikipedia)
The last one is great😀 you can record yourself or play on backing tracks, or simply listen correctly to your improvement👍 the line out seems to be very effective
with the e-sax line out it seems you miss a lot of the surround echo or presence that can give the sax a nice tone - sounds thinner. I suppose it might be OK for practice, but I still like to hear my tone interact with the room - which can make practice a bit more fun.
Another slightly less portable option, but one that is less awkward, might be to build a small well-insulated sauna for your home (or perhaps use the one at your community pool). Playing in a confined space can damage your ears so if you choose this solution be sure to wear ear protection.
Some sax players I know have been getting into effects lately. They told me they have to fight feedback by using midi. As a guitar player, I'm trying to think of ways to get an analog signal into the effects/amp chain. My idea was to put some sort of mic in a sax mute. Then I remembered that many guitar players hate to even leave headstock tuners on their guitars? I imagine that idea of using this thing, live, for a sax player is out the window lol.
Jason Andrews, "Hognorant"...thank's for that great word. In Australia we'll change it to "Pig-norant" (cos we don't know what Hogs are). Ever notice that the neighbors with the LOUDEST Sound System always play the WORST Music? Don't worry, they're only jealous.
I never noticed this, in the intro, when the S glows, it makes a noise? Somehow that completely went over my head until I accidentally played the intro over and over again.
It'd be great if with the line out they could include a 3 band graphic eq, and maybe a bit of reverb (concert hall) effect just to add a bit of color if needed.
What if you use a rolled thick foam to cover the top of the bell (without blocking the bass notes keys) and let a small mic goes through the roll inside the bell? So you can connect the mic in to a recorder (for example) and connect earphones so you can hear the sound inside the bell before is muted by the foam? I will try this once I got my sax.
The neighbors would always complain about the noise when i practiced at home so I used to stuff the bell of my sax with a tshirt or a towel. Fortunately our new neighbors haven't said anything yet.
Naughty saxophones go into the Shame Egg.
Somebody, please, give me a dinosaur egg for a the naughtiest contrabass saxophone.

Shame! Shame! Shame!
Before you are good you will sound bad and everybody will hear it! :))
I would use one.

That urinal sounds fantastic!
Sarah Burrows Damn...lol....
Its wonderful~
I’m not a boy so I can’t really tell
You’re not wrong...
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Well my neighbours can't hear me playing, but they think I am kissing a penguin for hours.
aircanuck how?
Ex...excuse me?
@@Mechanical_Crow because the mute looks like a penguin
Lmao
😂😂😂😂😂
Funny story, a friend of mine gave me a straight soprano sax (a Lade in I think it’s either copper or rose gold) and it came with a *_trumpet_* mute.
lol
ThunderBuddy01 did it fit on the sax?
Alex K yeah, but it messed up the Low Bb (basically it made it a low Ab)
ThunderBuddy01 lmao the lower the better!!
so now it djents?
So, in order to mute my sax i have to turn it into an egg?
yes
well frst it goes into the microwave
Hank Hill lol and pay for a mute more than a ebay sax
Hahaahahhahaha!
It looks like the telepathic bean monster from HL2
I like how the Egg sounds like if you're sitting in study hall and someone is playing sax for the teacher in the next room
Okay wtf
We went from 3 pieces of foam to fucking alien space ship cartridges.
i dont even play sax. Why am i watching this
Rick Morks cause u have fingers and that finger clicked one this video and your eyes started watching this
Thats why
Same..
I play trumper and I don't care for mutes. My neighboors may hate me
tuba away
Marimba to the rescue
So basically your saying theres still no good sax mute out there....
weridcat85 yes there are no good mutes for sax
Just why would you mute it anyway?
Zargas413 when you live in an apartment, you should
the egg shaped ones are actually very good, I owe a chinese version of e-sax and if it wasn't for it, i woudnt be able to practice at all... not great for tone practicing thou, but for for all of the other 703.470.349 exercises, this is awesome. (the sax mute one seems better)
Any links to this chinese version that you are speaking about?
Bottom line is, if your neighbors are a pain, just head to a local park and practice there and save yourself 500 dollars! lolololol.
MARKLINMAN1 Might even make some money from generous people walking around
MARKLINMAN1 I would totally use the first mute just to get that subtone sound lol
More like if you bother your neighbours...
Go to a park? Can only do that when its not cold or raining out. And it sucks to not be able to play in the comfort of your own home.
I'd get robbed

360p club anyone?
I'm not that advanced yet. I still regularly watch vids on 240p.
its 2160p now 2022

you can allways get back to play sax

Sure feel sorry you have to go through all that trouble.
But I bet even if you played great and soft, the neighbors would still moan.
(saxist)
If you are keeping others from being comfortable/sleeping so that you can play, shame on you!
Wouldn't it be easier/cheaper/more fire resistant to just go in a closet? jmo. :)
Squidward?
Are you playing at unreasonable times? If you were you wouldnt have an issue.
It would be helpful to use a decibel meter and tell us the measurements.
Josh Jordan I
At 6:45. I bet even Houdini couldn't have got out of that saxophone straitjacket.

The mute made it heavily flat.
Noah Smith why every instrument needs tuning slides but there is always the adjust your mouthpiece and embouchure method.
mutes make all instruments flat
Darius Johnson no... trumpet mutes often make it sharp

Jacobo Lopez I actually laughed out loud inside of jus blowing air out of my nose
So how do i mute my bari?
Seth Lowe you don't. It's the Bari why would anyone want to mute it ??
Josh Chavez well said... well said
Seth Lowe
You buy a freaking huge Bari mute and put it in there. The same goes for the bass sax and contrabass and subcontrabass, etc
I would pay to see a subcontra mute and hear just how well it does or doesn't work.
Seth Lowe same
so you're saying i need to put my saxophone in an iron lung?
Matthew O'Mary correct
Make the Fight Against Polio Great Again. (and score it with a jazzy soundtrack)

I was going to say it'd fit right into 2001: A Space Odyssey. Who knew the 1960's were back...?

selfish and condescending.

I am going to have to do the same. Cover the beauty of your sax with .....well, anything??
You really have to label no mute WE CAN TELL WHEN THE EGG IS ON

Could you guys do a version of this video with a decibel meter? That would be really helpful!

I´ll stay in my 1.5 squaremetres broom chamber. It´s cosy there and the spiders are the best audience. They can clap with eight legs.
It's like your sax has Ebola or something....

Anyone realize that on the egg mute he goes from a selmer (without the mute) to a yanagisawa (with mute)
Any time he uses the mute it’s a yani and freely he uses the selmer
Thank you for this helpful review! You're very good at it.
The saxmute one is fantastic, recommend it for apartments
That mute reminds me of the series Get Smart's "Cone Of Silence".

Cherokee in Eb?? Tenor player BS-ing on alto LOL. I'm guilty as well
Does anyone else think his voice sounds like Eric Idle from Monty Python? Not that there's a problem, I love his accent.
True, and he also sounds like the main character from A Clockwork Orange. th-cam.com/video/kTuuXL8lakE/w-d-xo.htmlm41s

I used a trombone plunger mute with a baritone saxophone and it kinda worked, but made low notes a half step lower
Basically if you've been trying to master the tone of Stan Getz, purchase the first mute in this video...
