    Tell me your turtle cohabitation stories below!!! _Also_ I know a lot of you actually have two (or more) turtles living together. In my personal opinion, most turtles are happy in their own tank (although I'm slightly biased since Nemo is really nasty when it comes to other turtles lol) I'd love to hear your stories, both good and bad, and tell me your opinions!

    I am genuinely new to turtle keeping. I began with a want for fish and once I saved enough money, me and my family went to the pet store to purchase a school of fish that seemed easy and attractive. When we got there we saw the turtles and my family and I fell in love. We went home that day and I started doing research. And unfortunately I did not collect enough information about the work that goes into caring for these beautiful creatures. When we returned the next day the workers at the pet store convinced us that two red eared sliders could fit and would grow to the size of a 20 gallon aquarium. Knowing now and watching your videos I am SO upset that these store are spreading false information that can determine an animal’s future. After about three weeks with them in the tank I couldn’t stand it and scrapped up enough money that managed to purchase a 40 gallon breeder and am now searching for a 125 gallon aquarium. Sorry I’m just rambling now. My two turtles (one male and one female) have shown no aggression and love to dig in the rocks together. If you made it to the bottom of the enormous comment congratulations. And thank you for your amazing videos!! You are amazing!

      A lot of people start like you, so no worries. The awesome thing is that you still did research after the fact, and I applaud you for that! Really good to hear that they are getting along. Good luck on your search for the 125, let me know what happens!

    I have 5 turtle together, and before you go snapping at me, the have plenty of room, a large, breeder 75 tank, and a large basking area. I had one and I got two more turtles from the same place I got the first one, they were already kept together so they got along fine because they were grown together since they were babies. I got two turtles from a friend who could not take care of them anymore. I slowly introduced them, and they all got along perfect. I have a large male, female, and medium sized male, the two little ones are to young to tell still. They get along fine, but they tend to steal each others food, so when I would feed them things like fish I pull them out one at a time and let them grab their piece and set them back in the tank, I then scatter the remaining food around the aquarium. They all eat fine since I started doing that, although I always watch them each incase of an emergency. Things like floating pellets they never fight over. They all take a corner and I feed their corner and they eat right up with no problem.
    Encase you’re curious I have one red eared slider and the rest are yellow bellied sliders. The largest male tends to try to mate with the female but I think she’s to young still and the other male doesn’t have problems with the older male, it really depends on the type of turtle and their personality, I honestly got very lucky.

I currently have a male red eared slider - they are separate but was hesitant to bring them in together due to them not growing up together - maybe I will try and see how it goes - and do it slowly - daily. thank you

    I keep my two turtles in the same tank. Even feed them together, they never show any aggression towards one another. The only thing they do differently together as opposed to alone is when basking sometimes one of them will climb on top of the other forming a turtle stack. they switch who is on the top, and neither seems upset about the other one lying on top of them.

  • @OvargasSecurity
    @OvargasSecurity 6 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    Ok so... here goes. I basically saved two red eared sliders so no choice in just keeping one turtle. But I strive to give them all their needs. I purchased a 125 gallon tank and base, added two turtle toppers one on each side, two canister filters, one back mounted filter, a 3D back ground and large river rocks. Currently my two turtles love it. Do they fight? Very rare at best. This is due feeding them strawberries as treats and they are greedy. If I see any form of aggression I immediately pull them out and make them walk around for about 10 minutes and they forget all about it. I am lucky, my turtles have their own basking area and the tank is so huge that they hardly interact. Oh male and female. So they have their own space and when they do interact they are both digging through rocks and basically just looking for anything they can find under the rocks. I also have two feeder fish. Aggressive yes. I would not put another turtle in my tank. Because they can be aggressive. But they eat together and basically share lettuce with out issue. It’s only if I give them treats, Especially a strawberry when they become aggressive. So my practice is give them a treat... walk them shortly after then put them in their tank. They have been great. Mind you these turtles came from a half filled tank with over 5 turtles trying to share one basking lamp. Now they are living in paradise. I will make a video and share with you. Your videos helped me understand turtle behavior and because of your videos I now have my own saved turtles. This is a personal thank you. Keep up the great work. I will share the video with you some time this weekend. Thank you!!

    Painted Turtles can be kept together as long as you have multiple of each gender. They live in "communities" in the wild. You can see them basking together.

    • @LaNoturna
      @LaNoturna 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They live in communities in the wild because they typically have a large pond to cohabitate. A tank is much too small for a community of them.

    So I’ve had my red eared slider (male) for about 3 or 4 years now, and recently I got an African side neck! (Female) she’s a bit smaller but after a while of her being in her own tank I decided to put them together. Her tank was smaller than my red eared sliders and his tank is quite big. They both seem shy but they aren’t stressed or aggressive, i will update if anything happens! (I still have her tank set up just incase)

    I have a red eared slider and a peninsula cooter together in a 300gal, it goes to 500gal, and later I will fill it to 500 when I finish it, bc it is a custom enclosure I made, but I don't plan on finishing it until next summer. They are both 1yr old so they aren't aggressive towards each other, hopefully it stays that way. I didn't think aggression would be a problem until I saw something on reddit about it, so now I'm doing research. They have a pretty big enclosure, and like I said it's not even finished yet. I hope they will stay calm towards each other, they will bask together and I have plenty of guppies in there for them to eat plus I feed them extra stuff, so hopefully they won't feel the need to complete for food since there is so much of it in there

    I am a new turtle owner! This was helpful, thank you for posting! I rescued 3 baby Red Eared Sliders in the fall & they're 5 months old now. I have 2 boys, 1 girl. The girl is 4 inches now, one of the boys is 3", & the other boy is 2". So far they get along well!! They are together sometimes and sometimes separate. However, they like to sleep all smooshed together on one side of the basking rock at night (even though they have plenty of room to spread out elsewhere)! Lol. I have noticed sometimes when feeding they don't realize that they can all go for separate food around the tank, instead they kind of try to go for the same pieces. It doesn't seem aggressive thus far, but trying to watch that! May end up feeding them in separate containers as they grow older! Also am thinking about getting a divider once they are old enough to mate. @TheTurtleGirl do you have any suggestions for tank dividers?! :)

    I have a juvenile and hatchling red ear slider and they work really well together, The baby often sits on the bigger ones back.I feel like they work really well cause the juvenile (Crush) is shy and basically likes to hid in this one specific spot, and the hatchling is very adventurous and loves to roam around. There was one fight over Crush’s spot once, but I just removed the spot for a day and it sorted itself out.

    I had 4 turtles living together for years (3 years actually before we had to give them up because of moving) 3 red eared sliders and 1 Eastern painted. Maybe it was because they had been together since they were little but they were never aggressive toward each other and I just assumed this was the default. I appreciate the correction.
    Still I wonder if they took all the angst out on the crawfish and mosquito fish we kept with them (captured all those from the nearby pond were we lived and yes some got munched as expected). Heh they never did get the runt though, little crayfish started out as the smallest guy and I found him without any claws to boot. Ended up being the sole survivor years later and grew 3-4 inches, big enough to where even the turtles avoided him as he owned the tanks floor.

      @@gabrielllazo5639 it is not up for debate that what you're doing is cruel. 20 gallons is too small for most turtles if they were by themself. Your situation is a disaster waiting to happen I bet my house on it. The chances that all 6 of your turtles will remain complacent and friendly with each other is near impossible. Not trying to be mean just giving advice because I care about turtles. I'd try and seperate them, get them a much bigger tank/'s or a pond or find them a different home before they get injured or die. It's not fair on them.

    I had 5 turtles in one aquarium from basically birth. One georgia map turtle, a pink belly, and 3 yellow belly’s (2 males 1 female). Its been more than a year since ive gotten them all and sadly the Georgia map died from a sudden case of pneumonia that i didnt see in time, and the pink belly had a skin fungus since its birth and no matter how many doctors visits i took her and medications i gave her it always came back stronger after a month. I was new to the turtle caring and still new but at that time i still kept the pink belly in the same tank with the 3 yellow belly’s. Before she passed from the skin fungus i started introducing fish in the tank and the fish were too big and fast for the turtles to catch so they got used to them. As time progressed i added more and more different fish in the tank. The turtles arent big enough to lay eggs yet but they are from 2-4 inches in the shell. Ive not had any problems with the turtles fighting or being aggressive to each other or to the fish (except for the feeder fish and shrimp i put in twice a week) and in fact for some reason they enjoy being in a group. Idk if its a tactic they developed from there being other critters in the tank but they are almost always together. Ive never had problems with sexual rage yet and i give them a surplus amount of food because the other fish will eat the rest. Havent had competition at all yet but i do fear that itll occur within the next year. If you see any problems so far with what im doing comment on this text or any tips you can provide for someone who is still new to the aquatic care. This comment is a “life story” of sorts of what ive done and experienced with it and honestly its just rambling. Thank you

    I think based on the comments and my own experiences, if you get them together as babies they don’t mind.
    Mine are in a huge dog pool during the warmer days outside turned to a pond. They are both yellow bellied sliders girls but they have two caves which they can bask on separately.
    They do sleep together in a storage tub that’s maybe 30 gallons, it’s only for sleeping. They go in we cover it and one ticks herself under the tea towels we have in there and the other will lay on top her sister over the blanket.
    They do have a smaller kiddie pool inside that’s not turned into a whole pond but more of a tank setup. They only go in there while we’re cleaning or if it’s too cold to go outside or more than 100 degrees. That’s the only place where even with their own space they get upset. It’s too small, so it’s rare they go in. Sometimes will let one roam and one bask, then swap.
    They eat separately in this pool. There is one who is more aggressive and this is the only time we see it. They will free roam near each other and all is good, but that smaller pool turns into Lord of the Flies real quick if you put food in.

    I adopted 3 Red Eared Sliders & not a lot of past info came with although they had always shared a 50 gallon aquarium. Two females 10” & 8” plus one male a 9”. Shorty after one of the females bit the males neck when it was extended. I had to remove him to a different aquarium. It took awhile to heal but with daily cleaning & aquarium changes he survived! The two females are happy together in their 70 gallon tub & the male is in heaven living by himself in the 50 gallon. I didn’t know what I would be taking on. I didn’t discover Turtle Girl until after the adoption! I’m putting in a small pond for summer & have purchased a large troughs for the girls. Everything’s working out well & I had a couple of eggs but it seems like there’s so many sliders it might not be fair to let them breed.

    I have a regular red eard slider thats ive have for 15 years the first 9 years i was very young and new nothing about taking care of one im happy and lucky it survived its didnt grow much for not having a big tank or lighting but after 9 years and doing research I bought a 40 gallon tank and heat lamp with uvb and a Rio grande red eard slider that's I've had for 6 years now they get along great the first year the older one was a little aggressive with the smaller one till the Rio grande grew almost the same size as the res due to it having proper tank and lighting from a baby and they bask together all the time my mom brought a pink turtle she found far out from any bodies of water and they have all been getting along great 👍

    I had two male red ear sliders, both knew each other from hatching though and they never got aggressive, as well as two other adults(introduced at adulthood) who never minded sharing space with the other in the 55 gallon tank, lastly my favorite two, I had an adult red ear with a younger painted belly. ALL TURTLES IN PAIRED TANKS WERE FED IN THEIR TANKS TOGETHER WITHOUT AGGRESSION TOO!

    I did have a red ear eared slider and map turtle together for about 10 years and upgraded them to a 120 gallon for the last 4 years and they did fairly well for the most part and I would ensure they each had their own basking space and had a divider whenever I noticed aggression. Eventually though the red ear slider was too aggressive and I had to separate them so they each have their own tanks now. Good video! I never thought of the possible combinations before and thats a cool idea. I will still stick to separate tanks because that seems best.

    This is way off topic but I have a question: whenever I wear plaid, my turtles go crazy. Why? It's not the color because I have several different color plaids that I've worn, it's gotta be the pattern. They start splashing and trying to chase me. When my shirt gets close to their tank it's all they focus on (usually they calmly study my movements and my hair), but they try to bite at my shirt. I'm perplexed. They do the same thing with cell phones too..

  • @brianschultz6352
    @brianschultz6352 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    my res and ybs get along pretty well. big tank, constant rotation of live plants for the ybs to tear apart and a good number of fish to keep them exercising. res spends most of the time basking and/or hiding in the floating foliage. ybs spends most time swimming and playing with the fish, when they do bask together they are both having zen moments. res is smaller but he came first and he lets ybs know who is boss... give a kind of slant eye towards ybs and ybs backs off.

    I’ve had two male painted turtles in the same 60 gallon tank for almost 30 years now. They were actually fine together in the beginning then 10-15 years ago, one started getting aggressive towards the other. The smaller one go figure. Since then I just put a plexiglass divider with holes drilled in it separating the tank in the middle. Now they each have their own sides, one side has a Los Angeles back drop and the other side has NYC. Of course I named them Tupac and Biggie.

    I have 2 red ear sliders (1) female (1) male after watching your vids I have learned alot. Especially some things I didn't know were bad. I have had them both since they were babies (6 years old). They use to not fight until recent year or two. I have finally upgraded my filtration system, basking area, and heater. One thing I never did and will start doing because of your knowledge is feed them separately because it saddens me that they fight when they didn't before. Mostly it was my fault I learned along the way on my own but seeing a community has Def opened my eyes. So now the real test begins. They don't fight all the time it's a rare things but now that I am utilizing the entire tank I have a feeling things will be normal again also separate feeding forsure. ALL in all I believe turtles can have mates but be prepared first. Don't be like me and learn the hard way.

    My both turtles were together as babies till they gotten older my bigger turtle would always smell down below and go on top, and before I started keeping them separate my turtle would bite my other turtles tail and that's when I started keeping them separate. My other turtle is gentle but the other one always seems like he wants to fight. Even when I keep them separate and they see each other (which would be once in a while) he would stick his head up wanting to get to him/her. I once decided to divide there tank, it didn't work as my turtle tried going on the other side to get to the other one. Idk if he wants to fight or idk why he's doing it. If I could send pictures I would :/

    i have two male Macleay river turtles, in a 4 foot, 77 gallon tank, been together since babies, now about a year old and squabbled over food as babies for a few days, but soon settled im guessing they realized oh there is lots of food, okay, they sit happily basking together, but have always slept apart, they swim together and seen no issues so far, one is a lot larger so maybe thats why, maybe he is the boss, they also have a few generations of guppies, who i think use to be a food source, but lately seem to be more mates as numbers dont seem to drop anymore, bit concerning lol, guppies multiple fast :O

    I have a peninsula cooter and a yellow bellied slider together and the only time they show aggression is during feeding. They try to eat food off each other's mouths when there is plenty of other food floating around. So, I started feeding them separately. Other than that, they act like bffs! They bask together, piling on top of each other and even sleep together. Sometimes they swim together, the little one hangs on to the bigger one. They are quite cute 😊 they're still juvenile so idk their genders.

They always want to look at the back of each others head like they will follow each other around peep at the back of the others head then swim away or start the process all over again.

    Great video my dear. When I first got started with turtles, I had two reds together. Male and female. As they got older, they started with the sexual aggression and just the male always bothering the female. So naturally that led to getting another tank. Now they are happily separated. The I got two map turtles, again male and female. Same thing happened. Got a 75gallon for the female and a 20 gallon for the male. So they are now happily separated as well. And then there is one more male map and he is all alone with his Angel fish buddy.

    I'm wondering how long I'm able to keep my two res turtles together? They are about 9 months old and one is female and the other is male. Ive always fed them in separate feeding bins to make sure they never fight for food. I've never seen them fight at all and they always seem to be next to each other whenever I look at them. They'll bask and sleep next to each other as well. But they are still babies and I'm wondering if it'll work out when they get older? (Also the female is now almost the size of palm and the male is a little less than half her size.)
