    If you happen to know more about this confusing genetic history, please feel free to leave me a message and inform me on what information is missing. Thank you !
    The video I made several months ago on shrimp genetics has been a popular one, however a lot of people were confused on how shrimp breeding works exactly. As well as if the different color variations of neocaridina Davidi and neo. palmata (the "pearl" family) can split off and evolve backwards (revert) to previous color stages. Which, they can and this is know as " throwing" or "reverting", and can only be reduced via culling or removing those individuals from the population.
    Beyond this, I have also learned from breeders who have been in the hobby for many decades, that some of the information may have been mudded by incorrectly named shrimp such as Bloody Marys labeled as cherry shrimp or painted fire shrimp labeled as a bloody mary shrimp. Which then can end up throwing blue shrimp variants and confusing shrimp breeding hobbyists and myself alike, on what the true lineage is in this species.
    I will be talking about neocaridina palmata & davidii specifically and within neocaridina davidii, I will discuss the 3 wild types. A rusty striped phenotype, a dark brown to black version and the golden or more light gold or brown wild type that our yellow shrimp variants seem to stem from.
    This video includes discussing why decoding the genetics on these shrimp is so tricky and also will show the most likely pathways of selective breeding to produce each phenotype aka color variant.
    Variants ill discuss include the following-
    Neocaridina davidi
    Red cherry shrimp, painted fire, red fire shrimp, Sakura red shrimp, blue rili shrimp, blue topaz, blue dream, blue velvet, blue jelly, red Rili, orange rili, pumpkin shrimp, sakura yellow, yellow, green, jade, schoko, bloody Mary's, black rose, carbon and carbon rili.

    This is a really cool chart!
    Local stores around here couldn't tell fish and shrimp apart to save their lives. I've gotten everything from patternless milky white amanos to low grade cherries sold as sakura and rillis sold as cherry shrimp. This forced me to stop ordering livestock and only buy things that are in stock, so I can visually confirm what I'm buying. Of course the stock sucks, so I end up waiting months and months for something I really want, or get tired of waiting and hop on the train to buy livestock from another hobbyist, or a reputable store far, far away.
    At least now I know what quality different color gradings stand for, so I can recognize a good deal. Thanks!

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah thanks. My main issue is that I've attracted a great core 5 to 10k "loyal" viewers and I'm able to get them about 5 hours of content and 3 to 5 videos a week when it's vlog style production...however now that it's not just a hobby, I do want to draw those folks in, whom would watch discovery and history channel level shows...and not public access or NPR lol... thats kind of the crowd I WAS shooting for the last 4 years... the nerdy nerds haha.
      But in the last 6 months I've added about 4k in equipment to my standard gear, and I've had cheap mics, and 1080 filming from the start...however internet compressed my livestreams and I'm a bit stumped on getting those to look better (even an ethernet cable and the 200 internet doesn't guarantee me anything better than 720 or so about 50% of the time when i stream.
      But as for transitions and so forth, I used to spend time on about 20 videos to do an edited and typical TH-cam slideshow video...but oddly they always did worse than just speaking..
      The whole thing has been a very odd process. In that also, I got more subs on well edited content...but the minutes watched was half of those who subscribed to the lower tech style. "Barrier to entry" of interest I suppose...but at this size you sort of need to at least get it all in 4k HD and or mic & dslr it up.

    It’s a really interesting genetics experiment. Their colors most likely have many genes involved, so it isn’t like the dominant/recessive type inheritance most people are familiar with. This makes things more unpredictable. This is why their offsprings’ colors can hop all over the place - the genes are there, like you said. Some genes are also co-dominant, meaning it can go either way which one is expressed.
    Through intensive selective breeding and inbreeding, you can reduce the genetic variety of a population, and perhaps remove some of the color variants from the gene pool, if those genes also don’t code for some vital function that they need for survival. I’m guessing these are the “high quality” strains that mostly breed true that people can get.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes... their color is much more similar to human eye color, in how it works. With 3 alleles involved and co-dominance being common.
      There is a gene for flesh colors, translucency and then pigment in the shell

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's still somewhat uncertain until they DNA test all the color forms, but red and blue are fairly well sorted out now. I will likely do more on each color, but people get defensive (due to mixed lineages that led them to their strains, when they thought they had a wild cherrt 10 years ago but had a blue revert for instance...so there are many paths but this is the most direct or accepted info.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I net them at around 3 or 4 months old. When they are half an inch or 1 to 2 cm long by not saddled or able to spawn yet.
      No one that I know of buys shrimp under around that size. But as for catching them...in a heavily planted 20 gallon it gets tricky...often I use food as bait when it's the middle of the night, then come back and catch like 20 assorted shrimp all at once, then select what I need from that single scoop with a big net

      @Fishtory  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Haha yes there was one 3 years ago...but really the HUGE update is in caridina. I did an hour long video on tracing the wild roots and first breeders of caridina shrimp lines in a video called " the domestication of caridina shrimp- a genetic analysis " or something close to those words

  • @bluefin8087
    @bluefin8087 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    So if I’m understanding this okay… I can have yellow, green, and orange shrimp in the same tank & the offspring will be a mixed bag of those colors?

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So in theory, maybe lol. Sorry it's so confusing, but if the green and yellow mix... it'll be green and or yellow babies....sometimes light brownish ones ... if yellow and orange mix it'll be yellow and orange babies or some color in between... but if green and orange mix, it may create brown or tan to clear "wild". If you skip more than one mutation of color at a time with cross breeding, it may show for a generation or Two, but will get weaker and weaker until wild looking again.

      Just pull those offspring aside , then put them in their own tank, with the most blue 4 or 5 shrimp...and repeat until you get what you're looking for in a color. Sometimes it can happen in a few generations, sometimes it takes 20

    Helpful with what the potential outcomes for my "skittle" tank could be. I have one palmata female (white) and really bright yellow, orange, red, blue, and a very deep green male. She has spawned two batches now with interesting results - some almost white, others a pale peridot green, more with some wild traits of stripes/spots and casts of yellow or green.
    Besides her I also have an orange, a bloody mary and fire red holding eggs right now - can't wait to see what sorts of babies appear.
    I have older shrimplets I need to move out that are super dark green, almost black that were offspring of either the snowball or the orange female - now wondering who the dad was even more based on the chart!

    I was recently in your live with Father fish.
    I just got my first 2 shrimps, they were sold for dirt cheap and I came to ask ppl around and they said I have a Amano and a light green jade N
    Idk if it’s right but this one is pregnant and idk where to keep her so she can have her babies and thrive. I have a 55gal and in one section I have her in a breeder net box with guppy fry, but now I know that the guppy fry will eat the shrimp babies.
    I thought about put in a small tank but if it requires filtration. Just lots of questions I have and can’t really find the answers

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I've kept both species (neocaridina and amano) just fine in a planted fish bowl without a heater or filter. Just keep the water clean and if you have soft tap water add a few shells or some crushed coral so they shrimp get their calcium. Amanos tend to be little escape artists, though...so just a warning that sometimes you get one that decides it wants to keep crawling out of tanks or bowls

      Right now, my most interesting shrimps are the blue meat with red rili shell ones that I get. I just keep pulling them out into other containers...
      The genetics and phenotypes of selective breeding are so fascinating. If they didn’t mature and breed so quickly, i don’t know if I would have the patience!
      Mmm I take that back. I definitely am having the patience with my long fin green dragon project - some of the babies have amazingly long fins. They were hatched last year and are still only about 2 inches... but I have my eye on a couple that I won’t sell.
      This hobby is so fascinating.

      Yes! I've been logging what traits are dominate as well.... annnnd there are base chromataphores of 4 colors and then 2 layers of shell and flesh all which overlap to make a color...notice the color of a dead shrimp of specific breeds...for instance a dead jade turns peach and orange... blues turn clear blue.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yellow is genes are recessive, but wild color is co-dominant , as is red (since rusty red is a natural color variety and not just a newer mutation in pigment due to line breeding).
      Only spawning a yellow with another yellow creates more yellows usually
      I hope that helps, -Alex.

      Ive done plenty or punnett squares onnthe channel actually! Livestreams and shrimp related videos on breeding- but i don't remeber their titles off the top of my head.
      The odds using a wild type of getting rusty red or also blue/albino snowball are probably 1 in 500 or 1 in 2-3,000 , however with each, you need to keep refining and encouraging that. Only albino, black and oddly blue (like lobsters) are the only colors that could fully appear from one mutation (that we know of thus far.)
