He can't name them. That's part of being a journalist, so the source can trust you in the future (or other sources). Yes, the source was probably exaggerating or talking about a time in the past (probably a front office member of the Bulls would be my guess), but it's professionally unethical to name a source that doesn't want to be named.

And in my opinion, nowadays more players are talking to the media compared to before. Only organizations like the Patriots or people like Belichick keep everything in-house (That’s why he didn’t really care after Seth Wickersham said what he said about them, even after Brady said Seth was wrong). But NBA or some NFL players are always quick to tell their side of the story to the media or even on their own podcasts.
