The BONE-CHILLING MYSTERY I FOUND IN BAGS

  • A beautiful spring day, brings me to this beautiful graveyard, today's vlog ends in a shocking discovery, a secret tunnel that turns into something dark and shocking
    Thomas Kirby was executed in the hills of Rossmore, Tipperary on January 8, 1921 - a story that did not conclude until January 7, 1990 - almost 70 years after his execution.
    How Kirby met his death and came to rest in a lonely hillside grave for so long, has generated renewed interest locally. It is the result of deadly undercover activities by crown forces, operating in west and south Tipperary during 1920 and early 1921, and counter intelligence tactics by the local IRA companies.
    Kirby a native of Golden, Tipperary and a man with a strange past - he enlisted in the British army in 1901 at the age of 18, and was subsequently thrown out of the army a few months later on the grounds that he was a harmless lunatic
    In 1916 he reenlisted again in the British army - and once again this venture only lasted a few months. Around the 1919 - 21 War of Independence Kirby worked as a farm labourer in Annacarty, Tipperary and was noted for hanging out with the RIC and members of the Black & Tans stationed in nearby Dundrum.
    In the lead up to his execution, British military conducted a series of raids on houses in the Dundrum, Annacarty, Hollyford, Rossmore & Clonoulty area - that indicated clearly they had inside information. In response to this, IRA counter intelligence went into action.
    Suspicions about Kirby’s engagements and movements started to rise. The local IRA unit deliberately fed Kirby two pieces of information which were acted upon by crown forces. As far as the IRA were concerned - they had their man! Historian John Hassett stated “after four months of intensive surveillance and observation, conclusive evidence pointed to Thomas Kirby as the informant to British forces on the whereabouts and movements of the local IRA men.”
    The ground beneath Kirby’s feet was shrinking and IRA intelligence were closing in on him.
    Tadhg O’Dwyer, (Commandant of the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Tipperary Brigade) in his BMH witness statement takes up the story:
    “Although he (Kirby) disguised himself whenever he was out of the barracks with enemy parties, he was soon recognised. Then one night he ventured out alone and was followed and captured in a public house at Ballybrack near Annacarty where he was drinking.
    He was tried by court-martial and could give no satisfactory explanation of his movements. To the charge of spying for the enemy forces he pleaded insanity. He was sentenced to death and was executed by a firing party. Before his death we brought a priest to him, who anointed him and gave him all spiritual aid. We buried him up in the hills near Ballybrack. Kirby’s execution took place on or about the January 8, 1921.”
    BMH witness statements note that Kirby was held in a remote farmhouse for several weeks until orders came from IRA GHQ for his execution - other archival documents suggest that ‘he met his waterloo’ on the night after capture.
    Kirby’s court martial took place in a farm house in Foilmacduff close to the village of Hollyford. He was executed and buried in Ring hill, Turraheen in a spot where the parishes of Hollyford and Rossmore meet.
    Fr John Ryan, accompanied Kirby - heard his confession and offered him spiritual aid on his final journey. Local folklore suggests that Fr Ryan was shaken up after the experience and spent the evening in Daverns pub Rossmore, settling the nerves!
    Kirby’s remains lay in this lonely hillside grave in Rossmore for nearly 70 years. On Thursday December 6, 1990, after guidance from elderly locals, Kirby’s body was exhumed - orchestrated and identified by the state pathologist, the Gardai and the local community council.
    The Nationalist newspaper at the time reported - “The remains were surprisingly well preserved by the peat soil in which they were interred.
    He was buried in this graveyard

      Hi sue! I have been watching another channel out of Georgia called sidestep adventure. I thought you might be interested in. Robert cleans up these headstones in African American cemeteries. The mold on the headstones eats away at the stones. He uses a product called d2 It works with the elements to preserve them. I thought you might be interested in that. 🇺🇸

      @@crimthann-fathach Are those old coffin parts perhaps reused elsewhere? Are they curated collector's items? I wonder why people would even bother to clear such old vaults nowadays. Is there demand from the living to reuse these vaults for latter-day interments? In many places in continental Europe, a corpse may lie undisturbed for 10-15 years, after which the grave site or tomb is cleared out to accommodate more recently-deceased guests. I've never seen what they do with the remains in such cases, to be honest.

    Hey guys! Great video!
    Your reaction to the bags makes me chuckle a bit. You have to understand the reason for bagging the remains and the coffin parts.
    It is very common for cemetery workers, funeral workers, to bag the remains of the people who's coffins have fallen apart, including the coffin parts, when they are going to bring in a new coffin, with the family in attendance. However, they usually do it a day or two before the family is there. They will also ask if the family are satisfied with just having the bags, or if they want new coffins for the bones to be put into. Usually, they go with just the bags in the corner, and sometimes they buy one coffin for all of the bones.
    So you may have seen a Mausoleum being prepped for a new occupant! They will put the new coffin on the bars you see, as it keeps the coffin off the ground, so it doesn't decay as fast, if the bars are still good.
    Looking at the bags, they are fertilizer bags, which does not surprise me, with cemetery workers, so they may be just cleaning it up for resealing later? But I still believe they may have a new occupant coming soon.
    And the reason for the two bags, some keep the coffin parts separate from the remains, and some toss them all in one bag.
    Keep up the great work guys! I enjoy the videos you are making very much, and it makes me wish I could do the same!

    • @SerenitySueGraveyards
      @SerenitySueGraveyards  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Jeffrey, we don't have ground keepers here on the old graveyards and there is no way a funeral person would do that. Maybe a relative? So tell me this how are the going to move that huge graveslab out of there, the graveyard is packed tight together..I have never witnessed anything like this here and I've seen a lot, I can only think this was vandals or graverobbers, where are the skulls? Why not place the remains in the coffin instead? I've so many questions lol

    • @SerenitySueGraveyards
      @SerenitySueGraveyards  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm not so sure, how will they get them in there? How will they remove that grave slab?

    • @jeffreyyoung4104
      @jeffreyyoung4104 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SerenitySueGraveyards Well, it wouldn't be grave robbers, as they left the bags there, and to move large slabs, they do it the way they have been for centuries, poles and ropes, and big guys with lots of strength.
      Once they get the slab lifted, they put rollers under and can roll it off, or they can carry it if they have to. Once the stairs are uncovered, they have better access.

      @@SerenitySueGraveyards I would say using a Skid Steer using forks like a forklift has .. As for vandals or grave robbing i don't think so the place was neatly cleaned up i am sure there was more than 2 bags used to clean up the vault more like 4 or 5 bags were used where the rest of the remains go well that will be a mystery

    • @SerenitySueGraveyards
      @SerenitySueGraveyards  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Why would they leave them there, surely after bagging them up they'd remove them?

    • @shawnnewell4541
      @shawnnewell4541 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @SerenitySueGraveyards That is a good question. I think, based on your comments, that there were, at one time, other remains there, and people have been removing them either for reburial or resale to medical schools, etc. In the US, we have had funeral homes and medical school morgues sell bones and tissue for profit. The people who participated in this are going away for 40+ years if convicted. This is a life sentence for most of them. Also, since it's a federal crime, they have to serve at least 1/3 of their sentence before being considered for parole.

    In New Orleans, Louisiana, 1 year and a day, after a person has been entombed, they re-open the tombs. All that it left is bones(it gets way over 100 degrees fahrenheit inside and the bodies decay rapidly). They collect the bones, put them in a bag and deposit them in a well inside the tomb. That is how a multitude of people can be entombed in a vault no larger than a large closet.
    There is nothing new about bagged bones. Where you are at, somebody has done the deceased a kind service.
