    We know most of you will not have an LG G4 just yet, but you can make use of our settings for most LG OLED TVs as we show you how to set up SDR, HDR10 and Dolby Vision for all of your content, so you can see the content as it was mastered and intended to be seen. What are your thoughts? Tell us below!

It’s true this most people will like a more vivid brighter image because it pops. If that’s what they like, great, but others will prefer a warmer image that side by side doesn’t look anywhere near as good. It is more natural though, and over time you just forget about it and enjoy the content instead of constantly messing with it.

    Hey there just bought the G4 77 inch. I wall mounted it in my living room and this room can be bright at times and when i use the film maker mode on HDR and DV content, i find the settings to be extremely dark and glum. Some dark scenes in guardian of the galaxy for instance can't be viewed comfortably. We barely can distinguish anything that's going on. Since there aren't any ISF mode dark and bright, i figured i could use the vivid mode and turn down a bit the contrast and reduce the color a bit so it's not too saturated. It's the only way i can watch HDR DV content. I thought my display was defective but any content on youtube displaying colorful iguana, tiger and whatnut in 8K, really pops with vivid color. i'm kind of disappointed by the image preset like movie and film maker mode, i wish they could bring up more details in dark scenes. maybe that an update would remedy the issue. Thanks in advance for your input.

      Buy a Spears and Munsil test disc and use the pluge patterns to set the brightness for both DSR and HDR. It's about 3 notches too dark on HDR. I would not have known if not for the disc set that has both HDR and SDR discs. May also change gamma.

      I've faced exactly same. Although the good news is not all G4 have this issue. I'm sitting in front of my 4th replacement and last 3 units didn't have this issue. @@wolfura Agreed. I get that filmmaker mode is supposed to be the most accurate but that doesnt always equal the most pleasing image to most people. I do value accuracy, but not to the point I can't actually see anything. • @Animal_lives_matter
      @Animal_lives_matter หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Apparently there's an issue with the latest firmware which causes the brightness to drop really low and someone said turning off professional under Dynamic Tone Mapping resolved it. Try toggling that setting off and back on again and please reply to this comment as I'm close to pulling the trigger on the G4

    • @rishav_v
      @rishav_v หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Animal_lives_matter I'm afraid it's not a firmware issue. Majority of G4 are problematic. Some has green tint. Some has brightness issue, some has terrible banding. I'm on my 4th replacement of g4 55 & dealing with extremely low brightness even at 100 in HDR & dolby vision content. SDR is manageable but still way inferior than my 2018 sony oled that didn't come with MLA, brightest OLED, etc marketing fad

    For me Dolby Vison looked way too flat on Film maker, watching Avatar Way of the Water, I seriously doubt thats what James Cameron "intended" The Navi barely even looked blue, they quickly became Grey Aliens 😂 Cinema Home was the sweet spot for me. Beautiful rich colors that are not overblown. If you're watching anything in the scifi genre or with heavy cgi, Film Maker is not the answer... Might be fine for oldschool movies with practical effects like Temple of Doom. But Im turning the colors up a bit to watch Kong Battle Godzilla... 🙌

I see that when I apply HDR content, settings are applied differently, and I can see how each source like TH-cam, Sky etc have their own settings applied, but SDR?
    I want filmmaker mode and a few tweaks and that's it for regular content, but how do I ensure I am making bigger more significant calibrations that will only apply to SDR content?

      It sounds like you're talking audio, not video. When you start watching HDR and Dolby Vision, there's a pop-up in the upper right corner indicating it. If you're not seeing it, it's likely a problem with the external device you're watching it from (I had the same issue). Try watching the content from the native TV apps.

      Our 77" arrived yesterday. Early days but I have the same as you. Freeview HD content via the aerial looks dreadful in various ways. Artifacts all over the place, dodgy panning motion, blurring where there should be detail. It's a far more pleasant watch all round on our 8yr old Hisense 4k edge lit LED TV. To be fair when we switched up to Disney+ to watch Shogun we were blown away. The issue is, we watch a lot of terrestrial content too. I can put up with this hugely expensive TV being no better than the old TV but not worse.

    Hey love the informative content + community on the site I have some questions if you guys can and don't mind answering:
    As I understand from the video the General tab from the Settings menu is global and independent of what image profile you have selected / applies to every HDMI input right?
    The only setting in the General tab that's input-dependent being External Devices -> HDMI Settings?
    If I change from HDMI 2 to HDMI 1 or change from Filmmaker Mode to Standard image profile the same settings will be applied in General tab all the time including Energy Saver from what I understand, is this correct?
    You only need to do it once when you setup the TV regardless of input / image profile and after that the settings from the General tab are applied permanently?
    Same with Aspect Ratio setting?
    Also what are the default values of SDR / HDR / Dolby Vision image in FILMMAKER MODE? (Brightness, Contrast etc.)
    Are they those that appear in the video when you configure the image settings or those aren't the default ones?

    I’m sorry but I’m still a bit confused on what the SDR/HDR/Dolby signals are and how we get them. What should we do if we don’t have disks? Is there some specific app I can use to get each, if so where in those apps should I go?
    Edit: So I found out how this works so no need to answer the question. For those who don’t know, for SDR you can just go to Netflix and pick some sort of old show or movie as long as it doesn’t say HD or Dolby Vision or anything like that (same with Max or other providers) and once you start watching for a few seconds you can go into settings and I think, I’m not sure, for the select mode option it won’t say hdr or Dolby. You can also do the same thing with Dolby, just pick any new movie on a streaming service that says Dolby and once in settings, the select mode will say Dolby. The only problem is that it seems it’s harder to find hdr, and I’m pretty sure it will also say HDR in select mode. I hope this helps fellow strugglers who want their quality to be even more quality 👍

    Why does dynamic tone mapping even have an effect in 1000 nit content? If the TV has dynamic tone mapping on and it detects the content is mastered to 1000 nits, shouldn’t it just leave it as it is and perform no tonemapping since the tv can handle that brightness range natively? What would dynamic tone mapping even do in that scenario? I just don’t see a reason to not leave dynamic tone mapping on at all times (except in Dolby Vision and in games), since theoretically it should have no effect in 1000 nits, but should help preserve detail in high brightness scenes outside the capabilities of the tv.

    • @avforums

      They are used as client monitors, not critical grading monitors. LG boasts that their OLEDs are used in more studios as client monitors than all the other brands combined. I haven't seen any independent figures to back up those claims, but many people who I know working in grading environments use LG client screens, so can believe that is the case.
