Jimmy Johnson is an unsung hero of jazz electric bass he played with EVERYONE at the highest level, from Lee Ritenour to Allan Holdsworth. And yet few people ever mention him.
Andrew Karp, you are absolutely right. He is an Alembic man and like you said, strings very close together, narrow neck. Saw him last time with James Taylor in Melbourne (2016 I think). Landau was in gtr... What a gig 🤩
roger mills do you have a cassette collections of mr ritenour 's albums sir ? you know sir i also a fans of mr ritenour and i right now i do have 2 cassettes album of mr ritenour there are PORTRAIT released in 1987 and the other one is FESTIVAL released in 1988 how about you sir ? what album do you have ?
I was 9 years old and living just a few dozen kilometers away from Pori in 1985 ... I wonder if I would have liked it or understood the music, if someone had taken me to see this. :) Parents, take your kids to see live jazz!!! :D
I was there, in my mid 20's... the band was great, but the rhythm section guys especially left an unmemorable trace. Jimmy Johnson's playing with his five string (first time I heard a b -string bass) sounded so good... even his solos where he used the whole fret board instead of just shredding the highest notes. Me and my bass playing friends stared with our jaws on grass, who's the h**l is his hippie looking guy 😆 Thanks for posting this👍
I was so happy to see the late, great Carlos Vega. Also, Jimmy has always been a stellar bassist/musician. This same outfit was the driving force behind the seminal album "Harlequin." Albeit mournfully a short set, but thank you for posting such a gem!
4:17 - thanks to the cameraman for giving us this view a bit longer than just a second. Carlos Vega in the flow or should I write meditation or what is it? A true master giving his talent to the music and no doubt he loves what he does. 🥰 Jimmy Johnson is still touring with the wonderful band he formed with Steve Gadd and Michael Landau. These guys still bring their audiences to musical heaven. 🙏 Same with Lee Ritenour and his wonderful bands. Larry Williams is another heroe of mine. Had the chance hearing him a couple of times with Al Jarreau. Outstanding keyboarder, saxophonist and flute-player! In Al's late years Larry seemed to focus more and more on soloing with the flute, so awesome! 👍
Wow what a band and what incredible musicians. I've always thought that Lee Ritenour is seriously underrated. I keep replaying his Wesbound every so often. I stumbled upon this video and what a treasure it is. Jimmy Johnson is on fire. Thanks.
I remember this well, still have it on c-cassette. I believe the show was broadcast simultaneously on TV and FM radio, so that you could enjoy stereo sound. Television sound was strictly mono back then. Thank you YLE. Anyhow, I was just getting into jazz/rock fusion during that time, and remember thinking this music had a little too much of the 'elevator music' element to it, but kept listening because I liked the drummer so much. Then of course I became a Lee Ritenour fan, which I still am.
Yep! You can see Rit hated that, then bursted to laughter, then was ashamed someone played him out on his own song, turned his back at the audience laughing, composed himself - and waited fearfully for the Larry Williams synth solo (Larry was much more forgiving). :-) What a great band. :-) - They just don't make music like this anymore! Anywhere!
I love the "wtf" look on Carlo's face at the 14:48 mark. Been there before! Hard to distinguish what you ard hearing and hoping you're right with one. Which he was. But it is unmistakable - That look. Also his fill after the 1st verse which uses a displaced accent off triplets. They all come in after it but barely. Lee's smile and turn around say it all. Triplet messing. Hard to do that.
The section from 3.05 to 3.30 has an intense drive with Rit, Carlos, Jimmy, and Dave locked in like Fort Knox, absolutely killer. I am surprised how few comments appreciate Dave Grusin's contribution to the overall performance. Good to see so much respect for Carlos and Jimmy, absolute masters.
@@musopaul5407 been doing that since...well two years b4 my license, at 16, then legally since about’79, in Country Squire station wagon, 1956 GMC p.u. , ‘59 metropolitan, ‘68 triumph....
Just get born in ~1965, be curious, and this is the coolest thing in your life. And you'll bump into it in your ~20's. :-) - And what is sad is, that all the years after this, you keep wondering what in the world happened to music. Sigh...
Agreed bro. Ya knows these festivals if ya have played some like them the sound guy says ya, sounds good we dont have that much time to get sounds, well get em close and ill mix ya in as ya start your set! Haha, great and yes the middle of the day at some gigantic jazz somewhere overseas etc so tough to make it right, but i guess thats the fun of it in a wacky way its either gonna hit or suck or for these cats its gonna hit just about every time to us, but ya know dang wel that they feel close to us when it comes to perfection and surely the humble insecurities carlos seemed to feel quite a bit not being enough no matter how ya seem on the outside. At the worst part is when your set is done at s fest like this they want your asses off the staage faster than ya got there ...hate that feeling but thats how it works etc. Theres a bridge section in the first tune that reminds me of green earings steely dan sorta. Im a huge porcaro dork so its great seeing carlos play and i hadnt really gotten a chance to check out this lee ritnour era sound, his guitar tone reminds me of janne shaffer sweedish guitar player the porcaro fam played on a whole album of his and itz super fire hot!
Lovely to see Carlos Vega.
i realize it is kinda off topic but do anybody know a good place to stream new series online ?
@Watson Gael Try Flixzone. Just google for it =)
@Dayton Dario Definitely, I've been watching on Flixzone for since march myself =)
@Dayton Dario Thank you, I signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :) I appreciate it!
@Watson Gael No problem xD

I’ll watch him any time. He’s could play anything. I think he also happened to be the perfect drummer for James Taylor.
Alembic or Fodeira?

I believe every(musician)body misses Carlos Vega a lot...
Jimmy Johnson is incredible then and now! Carlos Vega is a terrible loss to the world of music and drumming.
Yes, and Lets never forget the goat Jeff Porcaro
CARLOS THE BEST . He left us too early, his phrasing at the Drums is just great.
Carlos Vega was a genius behind the drums with the best feel and mind blowing chops. Check out his lick at 2:38! Mind blowing!
Oh yeah, that was awesome!
Carlos Vega is absolutely equal to Jeff Porcaro. Every day of the week. Period.
Thank You! I am so glad I found this. I was there in 1985. Incredible energy...

Hey that’s Jimmy Johnson they guy who was playing with Holdsworth during that same period.
Correct. There are excellent bass work on Metal fatique album 👌
A Shure SM7 for a sax mic...there's that Finnish hospitality
What would be then better mic in that time?
@jari oh, it’s a good mic, just a lot of mic for that purpose. A Shure SM57 would be fine, if not better, considering the outdoor application.
best!
