I've tried both the Givi racks but found they interfered with the pillion space (even though my wife is of a relatively small stature and very slim) so then went for a Cymarc plate which moves the rack back 20mm or so which made loads of difference but the box when fully loaded bounced around along with the rack to a worrying amount. So in the end I fitted an Altrider rack (similar to the alloy Givi item) and moved the pillion saddle to the forward position. This seems to be the best compromise. On my previous 1250GS I had a vario box and rack which was really good but too square in its shape and of course, we could only fit one helmet in it. A foot note I see you have a Q-Bag below your rack, only have it fitted when you need it or make sure you've got paint protection on the silver plastic deck underneath as mine took all the paint off and made a right mess.

Hi Darren thankyou for sharing your thoughts on topbox options and mounting options, a lot of owners are not really aware the passenger seat has two positions, so your comments will help others. I will check my Qbag tomorrow and see if it has damaged the paint work. Thankyou 👍Carl

I am looking to replace my Vario topbox for something larger but was concerned that it may cause buffeting or weaving, so good to know it doesn't, I am surprised you didnt have a problem with it fully loaded with the weight all being behind the rear wheel spindle! I too have the R1250GS in Triple Black, I had concerns for the factory rear rack. It's a cantilevered design made of polymer (plastic) with metal inserts at the bolt attachments. The supports under the rear rack are soft plastic (?). I have the GIVI hard cases. If you can find one, SW-Motech makes a metal support that adds to the soft support under the rack.

2015 R1200GSA LC... More on this bike I picked up a while back, it also came with the aluminum box-style, Kappa (a Givi company) K-Venture 58 litre (PN KVE58A) monster top case (the Givi branded one is the Trekker Outback 58 and is effectively the same box) . This sucker holds 2 of the Arai XD-4/XD4 easily, but I very rarely use the top case solo as I don't like the change in balance and they look ugly. I prefer my side cases for everyday use. The top case is useful when riding dual or fully loaded as weight/balance is somewhat negated and with the big aluminum box, the extra large back pads (Givi PN 172) provide a nice backrest for your pillion. With this style, you cannot lock your keys in the box. The rear rack I've got is a PN SRA5112 and is basically the same as yours, minor cutout design differences and is actually a very practical & secure mounting for the top case. For those reading here if you're new to this, be aware if you use a top case and ride solo, don't over load/weight them, they will change the handling characteristics of your bike, the most immediate one is making your front end too light.

Hi D.A, thank you for sharing your experience so I.. and other owners can benefit. On tour my rear topbox was indeed heavy and you sure can feel it, but the suspension preload set to AUTO did a really good job. But I was aware of the extra weight way way back.

    Thank you for the video.
But this time I have a different opinion. The Givi Topcase can indeed hold 2 helmets and is cheap.
It may contain a maximum of 10 kg. And that is probably exceeded quickly with the capacity. Also regarding the recommended maximum speed I have found nothing. Thus, I assume a maximum of 130 km / h. Like pretty much all other sets on the market. But at the size and higher speed - I do not know 😬.
Nevertheless, I have decided for the sw-motech adventure set. It may not contain 2 helmets, but I am so excited! Quality, optics and ultimately capacity with the side cases is gigantic. And still expandable!
A helmet in the top case and the second helmet by metal cable (Wunderlich) firmly lashed. Or both helmets so lashed and the space in the top case otherwise used.
It is indeed more expensive but it is also worth it. In my eyes...

Hi Thilo... good morning, your solution sounds great and I imagine it looks much better than what I have decided to use. Hi Carl, I've just sold my V47NNT, as I couldn't fit 2 x flip front helmets (one size L + one size XS) in at the same time. I have an R1250 GSA and decided to move to the Givi Trekker Outback 58L top box. I also bought the Aluminium Givi GS Monokey base when I bought my V47NNT as it is definitely better quality than the crappy ABS plastic one (and it looks waaay better). I've just watched your video on the Givi Top Box. I had exactly the same box on my 1200GS. I have a 1200GSA now. You commented that the box was difficult to take off and carry with your big hands. I found that it was far easier to pack everything into a soft bag and put that into the Givi. When you go into the hotel overnight all you have to do then is lift and carry the soft bag leaving the Top Box on the bike. I found that to far easier the taking the whole box into the hotel with you.

You can indeed lock the key in the topbox (mine is a Maxia 55L). It can ruin your day (at the very least one, and possibly even your marriage.) Worth knowing: if this happens to you, hard to believe this, but it is possible to get a tyre iron, small jemi or piece of wood up inside the lip of the clam shell on the side and lever open a gap big enough to poke things out through. The plastic is much more flexible than you might think - and what have you got to lose? The case and lock is admirably indestructible. If this fails - perhaps your keys are inside something bigger in the box - then you are going to need an angle grinder.

Also I have exactly the same gear as you have because I used the part nos you supplied. I have the R1250 GS Rallye ‘22 build. Not having a go at you at all. Just providing feedback because I know you would be interested.

Hi Mark, good morning. it sounds like you have had to do lots of your own research to find a solution that works for your bike/rack configuration. Like you say it's a shame Givi dont make it easy to understand what is needed. I hope Givi help you out a little with the plate you need. Carl

Hi Mark, I think its great you are sharing your experience because it will help other owners that have the same configuration as you, and probably save them a lot of time trying to figure out what to buy and what to install. Thankyou Carl

Its definitely possible to lock your key in the top box and then have to ask your wife to drive 75 miles with the spare….a friend told me ;-)

Hi Marco...... LOL.... yes indeed, i once dropped my wife off for an appointment (she had the BMW key in her jacket) i then drove to a park to enjoy the afternoon and wait .... and then had to ring her and ask someone to bring her back to me. DDDdhhh. We all make mistakes. thankyou for sharing, Carl

Hi Fella. Really have enjoyed your vids on the GS with all the accessories etc. Just moved to Scotland where the roads are brilliant and intend to buy a GSA in the very near future and your findings and advice are a great help. Want a 1250 but funds look like it will have to be a 1200 and cant wait to start getting the accessories. Best and keep safe, Old Bloke.

Hello Old Bloke, and welcome to the channel, pleased to hear you are enjoying the series. the 1250 is expensive but if you could find a good 1200 I am sure you will be very happy. The slightly older 1200 Rallye with the blue frame looks stunning (2017 I think), and I was looking at one of these before purchasing the 2022 version. Let me know what you decide to buy and enjoy those lovely empty roads in Scotland. Best Wishes Carl
