Don’t forget The Rock also bought the XFL, after the Vince McMahon relaunch debacle. They then merged with the USFL and are now marketing themselves as an alternative product the NFL
So, I'm going through this now. A few things: In Vengence 01, Jericho won because Austin and Rock went to bat for him. They both liked Jericho and knew they would work programs with him. Austin had spent most of 01 rehabilitating Jericho, Angle, and Benoit and helped showcase guys like RVD. I bring this up because Austin was a mentor to the Rock, famously protecting him in '99 when Shawn and Hunter were trying to sabotage his push. This ended when Austin told them and Vince, in no uncertain terms, that the Rock was who he wanted to work with. He also gave Dwayne a piece of advice which stuck with him for the rest of his life. This is the reason why Dwayne, unprompted, will talk very warmly about Austin and Bret Hart, as they both looked out for him. As for HHH's win rate... well, I guess being married to the business will do that for you.... As for the Lesnar vs. Austin thing. Austin was absolutely in the right to tell Vince, Stephaine, and Hunter to take a walk off a cliff. 2002 was an interesting year because you could see how angry both Austin and Rock were becoming with the company. Little wonder they both peaced out.
@@lindseyf.rhodesii5407 I think it must have been enraging for Austin to put all that work into elevating guys like Jericho, Benoit, RVD, and Angle, only for Hunter to sweep in and undo all of it. What makes me even curious is the sudden ‘face turn’ of HHH, beyond the scenes. For many decades, he was seen as symbolic of all that’s wrong with WWE - nepotism, backstage politics, and a stranglehold over creative (much to the detriment of the product). Many of his peers - Jericho, Angle, Punk, openly spoke about how they never got along with him (instead backing Vince as the guy they preferred). But in the last few years, suddenly HHH is the true force of good backstage, whether it be creative booking decisions, backstage morale and talent relations - while Vince is seen as representative of everything wrong with the company.
The way I see it is that the moment he semi-retired (and again when he fully did), he stopped making everything about him, 'cause he couldn't go anymore, and instead started thinking about the future, with stuff like NXT
I mean, elements of the Old HHH are still there with the revisionist history (eg trying to convince us all that he was the reason for the success of DX)
nah, hes still the same. hes just not in the ring anymore, so he doesnt care to hog the spotlight as much. thats why hes actually liked more now, cause his ego doesnt need to be stroked as much as when he was an active wrestler.
Well he's retired from the ring, so its not like he can make everything about him anymore. And even then, he still finds time to come out to get that entrance pop.

2024 has been surreal, the massive WWE Netflix deal, The Rock joining the TKO Board of Directors and is wrestling at WrestleMania 40. Absolutely incredible.
Anyone else find the irony that despite trying so hard to push Black Adam as a hero and trying to make himself The Face upon returning to WWE... he ultimately just ended up playing the villain anyway?
Out of hogan cena austin and Michael’s, rock pulled the least politics when he was at the top. No story’s of him refusing to do business, no along his ball and going home, refusing to put people over, he lost matches A LOT losing his first 3 mania main events… let’s not try to even place the rock in that category of ego paranoid stars.
It pisses me off how modern wrestling fans (who didn't even watch Rock in his prime) are trying to rewrite history and portray Rock as a backstage politician on the same level as Hogan, HHH, HBK, Cena, and Austin, when in reality he was the least protected top face in the history of the company. Every top star has played politics at some point (including Rock), but judging by his weak booking, Rock didn't play it as much as the other guys I mentioned. He should've played it more to be honest because he lost way more than he should have during his run as the top guy.
22 minutes into the video, I think this is my favourite WrestleTalk deep dive yet. Very interesting learning about the Rock’s backstage politicking in Hollywood!
This didn't even cover the Steiner maths he, Diesel and Statham used to make sure none of them looked weak. From a WSJ article, "according to producers and crew members on the films, Mr. Statham, 51 years old, negotiated an agreement with the studio that limits how badly he can be beaten up on screen. Mr. Diesel, 52, has his younger sister, a producer on the films, police the number of punches he takes. And Mr. Johnson, 47, enlists producers, editors and fight coordinators to help make sure he always gives as good as he gets." They're planning fights like actual wrestling matches.
Thanks Oli & crew for spending so much time researching and all for this. Thoroughly enjoy these deep dives, and this might be the best one yet. Can't wait to see what else you have in store!

He might be pulling more strings now but his Final Boss character gave the bloodline a shot in the arm it needed and made Cody’s win feel even more special.

While I agree, I think the lighting change is there to set the long form content apart from the day-to-day videos - making them more dramatic. But they can brighten things up just a touch.

I always got the impression that WWE never REALLY believed in The Rock beyond his inability to get over as "Flex Cavana" or "Rocky 3rd Gen," as they pushed him. His title reigns were short-lived, he was constantly being undermined, I'm not sure I fully buy that Hollywood "taught" him how to politic any more than he was simply out from beneath the shadow of the guy who married the boss' daughter, so always had the boss' ear. It definitely feels like his fallback because Hollywood, ultimately, didn't work out on an executive level. And honestly, good on him: most people don't get to order around the guy who tried to bury their career 20 years later.

I was not a fan of the 10min “deep dives” that were replacing the news but these actually deep dives on Saturdays are my 3rd favorite thing- after 1) Survivor series and 2) Monday Night Wars.
For me The Rock(WWE character)was last seen in 2004 The person we've been seeing after that is Dwayne Johnson He's got shades of the rock in him But he's not "him" The Rock could potentially be called the GOAT!
Ha, I like the framing of Rock coming back and getting the Mania match with Roman as being the next best thing to what he tried to do with the attempted take over of the DCEU for a movie with Superman. That's a good connection.
The Rock is someone that I just feel like it's hard to hate. Though he may be more political now than he used to be, it always seems the man has good intentions, which can't be said about a lot of people that have been in the same or at least similar positions. He just seems like an overall good dude who just wants what's best for everyone. Whether the outcome goes as intended, that's can't be the case 100% of the time
Just goes to show you don't have to win every match and refuse to put others over to be a top star. It's a shame he's apparently forgotten his own good example.
"...The Rock had become head of WWE creative, Paul Levesque's biggest star, AND HIS BOSS!" Thank you very, very much for making that extremely clear. There are plenty of morons in denial about that. I like who HHH is now, but we should never forget how HHH used to treat Rock when they were the young stars, with Shawn Michaels' (and probably Vince's) help on top of it. Therefore, this is a form of long-term justice being served that The Rock now outranks them all and Vince is out in disgrace like he deserves. He might have had to play their game to do it, but sometimes beating someone at their own game is the only way to win, life's not always black & white, it's often very grey.
I love how you wrestling fans talk about the Rock as he TRULY IS the biggest star in Hollywood, when in reality, non of his success is because of HIM........Moana was gonna be a hit because of a great story, and the period that movie cameout the Disney Revival era, with each film making ton of millions in the box office, Rock or not that movie was an almost guarantee success, FAST FIVE wasn-t a mega hit because of the Rock, that movie broke all what the previous films did, creating a very unique experience that made audiences love the FAST movies again, the Rock have the luck he was on board but he made that success all own his ON LIKE he was the only reason the movie was successful.....how I know, because after that it was all he talk and people say, to the point he target to revive another action film series in desperate need success....GI.JOE......and all the marketing was around how maskable the Rock was and what happen.................it bombs, same with Hercules (oh omitting that one as well, great job guys), many of the Rock films happen to be assembles films that he is not the only star in liek Jumanji, ALL FAST films, etc, but naaaah is all HIM right, we forget that rule he have since F5 of him can never get a visual lose in his films and if the opponent last 10 punches he have to give the same.....this man can be my idol in wrestling, but in Hollywood is everything John cena cut on that promo......is all about THE ROCK not anyone else.
29:02 I'm going to say something before I know what they are going to say Rocks story has been going on longer than Cody's one And also of the topic if he wasn't on the board he still would be able to say bad words because he's still The mofo Rock
I enjoyed a lot of this thank you except its already been corrected by writers he went 30 seconds under his promo and he has corrected the fake stories about his language use. Im sure all got the point now as blood was shown. The show is moving to a new era away from pg13 and towing closet to the line. The Rock is well aware how far the line can go and we will see it edge to it until Netflix. Thats when it will be more like it is now.

These mini documentaries are great. Loved everyone so far
Just tremendous. Thanks for this video.
This series is awesome. Probably the best thing you've done everrr
ollie, i love your presentation!
also, 'spent way too long on the cagematch database...'. brother, i feel you. i go there several times a day.
To be fair, Dwayne Johnson becoming President might actually be a good thing.

Insert quote from Mean girls
"She doesn't even go here!"
Olli needs this.
I'm still mad about the rock beating CM punk
Love these videos!! Keep them coming!!
You could've been an investigative journalist, but you chose to cover pro-wrestlin' backstage drama, and for that, I am thankful.
Great video guys loved it 😍
I was not a fan of the 10min “deep dives” that were replacing the news but these actually deep dives on Saturdays are my 3rd favorite thing- after 1) Survivor series and 2) Monday Night Wars.
I’m a patreon member of a lot of channels including wrestletalk and without a doubt wrestletalks patreon gives most! It’s an unbelievable patreon
For me
The Rock(WWE character)was last seen in 2004
The person we've been seeing after that is Dwayne Johnson
He's got shades of the rock in him
But he's not "him"
The Rock could potentially be called the GOAT!
Another fantastic video
Love the little Pete-interaction moments too !
Love these long take videos keep them up ❤
When Oli asks to check out another video. You check it out.
Whether the outcome goes as intended, that's can't be the case 100% of the time
do you guys not do smackdown reviews anymore?
Great job Oli
I'm really liking theses videos.
Love the grocery store version of his nation theme.
Just goes to show you don't have to win every match and refuse to put others over to be a top star. It's a shame he's apparently forgotten his own good example.
"...The Rock had become head of WWE creative, Paul Levesque's biggest star, AND HIS BOSS!"
Thank you very, very much for making that extremely clear.
0:46 😂 love you oli
Forgetting he hadn't won the SuperBowl was spot on
Every day people find out that "FINE! I'll do it myself and it's gonna be better than you could ever make it" is very hard
I love these videos but I sure do miss seeing sat and tempest on my Saturday mornings❤😢
OLI ..... Make all The puns....I SAID ALL THE PUNS ...great video.... Keep it up
Rock made WWE cool again
Damn Olí you read that so amazing. I felt like something on WWE or at least NXTUK.
Wow this is actually interesting Wrestletalk 😊
This is a great piece Oli
Steiner math is better than the pipe bomb
I love these videos so much!
In your Video Essays playlist its missing the Bloodline and McMahon videos
29:02 I'm going to say something before I know what they are going to say Rocks story has been going on longer than Cody's one
And also of the topic if he wasn't on the board he still would be able to say bad words because he's still The mofo Rock
I enjoy listening to you ❤❤
I enjoyed a lot of this thank you except its already been corrected by writers he went 30 seconds under his promo and he has corrected the fake stories about his language use. Im sure all got the point now as blood was shown. The show is moving to a new era away from pg13 and towing closet to the line. The Rock is well aware how far the line can go and we will see it edge to it until Netflix. Thats when it will be more like it is now.
enough of these videos we want the smackdown reviews back, thank you.
I wonder does the element of pushback have to do a little bit with racism because the Rock is now essentially the boss
It is just an opinion
The Rock thought Shazam was a mid-carder in DC, but forgot Black Adam was a heel jobber.
I'm just glad Oli got to mention CM Punk somehow still
