As an American learner with my first 5 speed I’ve been binge watching these and then going out and driving around for hours after practicing 😅 I’ve gotten decent at rec matching but my older car is very precise with the rev locations between shifts so I have to make sure I’m on it! Also hill starts were terrifying to me until I realized the E-brake method wasn’t actually hard I was just scared to try it My advice for nervous learners is to just put yourself in the worst of it like traffic and stop signs then do it again because that’s all driving really is in the end 😅
Just passed first time yesterday! Thank you so much, these videos have been super helpful, especially the show me, tell me questions and details with the clutch! :)
The demonstration with the electronic screwdriver is the best! Makes things much more clear. Thank you. What country are you in? That you have the left side driving rules.
This is very vehicle specific. We have a Suzuki Swift that this applies to, but it also helps to press the clutch in as soon as you come off the accelerator. However on our other cars doing the opposite tends to be smoother, which I very much prefer.
I am so stressed out trying to learn manual. My driving instructor wasnt helping much either. This clutch method i was taught while on the road driving with cars. It scared the hell out me since he started shouting 'clutch clutch'. I'm a beginner man. He also told me to release the clutch immediately after changing the gear and then press the gas pedal.
I know sometimes when I engage my clutch there's like an oscillating judder. I assume it's because the engine and gear aren't quite at the same speed and the judder is the clutch plate dampening springs bouncing backwards and forwards.
when doing Full Throttle shift, I think its pretty much a quick "see-saw" method. The reason is because the travel of throttle is long compared to when you are just cruising. When cruising with just like 10-25% throttle, it can be felt that it is clutch down first then off gas. When going full throttle, there has been instances where my gas doesn't come off quickly enough when my mind is set to Clutch down first then off gas. Just as shown at 6:40 when you did it a bit slower with clutch down first/then off gas...your revs shot up a bit. That is what happened to me when going full throttle with the mindset of not doing a FAST See-saw method.
The jerking only happens when changing gear at the wrong speed from my experience e.g: change down from 5th to 3rd while the car going at 60mph without slowing down. It also depends on the car too, I drove a 2009 Golf that have the faintest biting point where you have to roughly guess where it is that the car gear changing is too good to mess up.
2:44 I once thought this would most apply to turbocharged engines but a few months ago I was merging into the motorway with a hard acceleration in 3rd gear on a natural aspirated. When it was time to change, I thought: "I better come off the gas first before the clutch or the revs will go up". I let off the gas and tenths of seconds later, the clutch is down and still the revs went up as I clutched in.
My car does exactly the same thing and it's naturally aspirated. I usually lift off and wait till I feel the power to the wheels neutralise and then press the clutch in. In my car if I do it right you get a millisecond of rev hang after pressing the clutch and by the time you change to the next gear the revs are matched perfectly to lift the clutch and smoothly transition into driving the next gear. If you're curious my car is a Toyota Aygo. I can imagine this is true for allot of cars though, I assume the intake manifold takes a split second to build back up a vacuum.
@@micheals1992 "Toyota Aygo" I think I know why yours does exactly the same thing. The car was driving was in fact a Toyota yaris with the 1.0 VVTI 69HP. I think the Aygo has the exact same engine with, if not the same, close power.

Hiya Richard, I'v been following & watching your videos for a while, & all your videos have helped me a lot in how to driver properly, I am currently looking for a good driving instructor to get back into learning to drive, but am finding it extremely difficult trying to find a decent good driving instructor. How much do you charge for a 2 hour lesson, also which area are you based at? My previous driving instructor was so terrible, even though i had only 2 lessons with them recently, i decided they weren't that good. I have already learned a lot from AA driving school previous to the recent driving instructor though, so I'm not exactly a complete novice, i know the basic stuff, basic routines i have to do, like Mirrors, signal, manouvere etc. Its just finding the right driving instructor. So far i'm having a terrible time of finding one good instructor to teach me properly. I would've already passed my driving test if a had a decent driving instructor like you richard. Thats just being honest. The majority of instructors i've been through are rubbish, except one, from AA driving school. But i lost their contact number, the last i spoke to them, they said they were going to apply for a job as a pilot, but that was many years ago now. Don't even know if they're still teaching or not anymore. Sigh.......😩
I'm sorry to hear that. I'm based in Colchester Essex and am currently fully booked. I recommend looking for an independent instructor with good reviews, if you are not happy with them, move on until you find one that helps you.
Watched the video and bought an automatic car :D Can't believe we are in 2022 and still learning how to drive manual cars. Sooo many unnecessary actions you need to do when you could just press gas/brake and enjoy the ride :)
Well explained. Sometimes, like 1 out of 5 times, when I am pressing the clutch down, I feel some vibrations. I can feel the spinning of the engine. Nobody feels anything except my foot on the clutch pedal. Is it because my revs are too high for a particular gear? If I'm not wrong I have observed this more oftenly when shifting 2 to 3 and 3 to 4. What I am doing wrong unconsciously?
If your engine revs are increasing when you press the clutch down, it means you may be staying on the gas pedal. Try releasing the gas as you press the clutch down. If you are coming off the gas pedal and this is still happening, then you may have a problem with your car.
What about with downshifting? I've found that when down shifting at higher speeds (say, 3rd to 2nd at 30 mph) the car jerks a bit. I assumed that was natural since the rotational energy is being cut off from the drive train.
30mph is still too fast for 2nd gear, hence the jerk. You should slow to a more appropriate speed (around 15mph) before downshifting to 2nd and reapply the gas as clutch goes through the bite point for a smooth transition. With practice you shouldn't feel any jerkiness.
There is a certain correspondence between car speed and engine revs for each gear. High speed at lower gear means very high revs, but when you downshift, your engine is probably at low revs. It can't suddenly go to high revs when you downshift due to the flywheel inertia. It will try to swallow your kinetic energy in a gulp (hence the jerk), but this is not a graceful thing at all.
I believe if you're going from 3rd -> 2nd at 30mph you need to rev match for it to be smooth. Depends on the gear ratios of the car though but I assume you would be changing down because your 3rd gear doesn't have the power you want. Anyone correct me if I'm wrong though
I don't really get jerkyness when pushing the clutch down unless like you said towards to end of the video i speed up then come off so the revs are too high.
I've never felt a jolt or jerk when depressing the clutch. Then again, my rubber clutch pedal covers look like they have 250,000 miles on them after 7000 miles of driving ...
wait i think im begining to understand so the clutch is kind of how a speed changer on a bike is, taking the chain off and replacing it at another plate[speed] i think its the same for gears , but well with gears.
Not original but it's doesn't wear out, it rattles at idle after a while which annoys me. It seems to be the damper springs that get lose and rattle, I guess from learners dropping the clutch and generally learning how to use it. I've measured it and it loses about 20% friction material per 40k miles. This video may be of interest: th-cam.com/video/0ZjSImbwo34/w-d-xo.html
Hi, when I apply clutch, half way mark pedal has slight pressure but after halfway mark it goes suddenly down feeling no pressure. Clutch Pressure plate change recently
In second gear you will still need to pause at the bite point but the higher the gear, the shorter the pause. In third gear and above you will barely pause at all.
Hello Richard I am a learner driver and I think I learn in a diesel car my instructor tells me to hold the clutch half way in second gear when I am doing a turn I don’t know when to do it and he get angry about it. I just don’t understand
@@ConquerDriving I just watched the vid it makes sense but I still don’t get why I have to put the clutch half way when doing a turn in second gear what’s worse is I don’t know when to do it because once I freewheeled around a uphill junction and nearly hit the island in the middle of the road
@@ConquerDriving shows. Decent maintence. Owner. All these modern cars even turbo supercharged injection can do 200k. A bad owner and the cars dead at 40k. TSi guessing yours is. 1.4.
With my Tacoma truck, it jerks - launching me forward - when I push the clutch quickly. Although I don’t hear clunking. But if I push it slower, it’s smoother. What could be the issue? I still want to push it quickly as I do see the benefit of it which is slippage doesn’t happen.
If it's smooth when doing it slow then I would do it slow. Do whatever is best for your vehicle, they all drive slightly differently, although I don't remember driving the car where pressing the clutch down slowly made it smoother.
Hello I have a quick question out of curiosity. (When on a driving test) If I go on a roundabout and take the wrong exit and I end up joining a motorway what would happen? Would I fail my driving test?
Going the wrong way is not a driving fault. But driving somewhere you shouldn't (like a bus lane or no entry) would be a fail. Usually the examiner will not let you go where you are not allowed and take the controls.
Failed with 0 minors. All because a bmw driver was speeding coming up to a roundabout. I merged when it was safe and obviously he caught up and I slowed him down. So I failed
I'm sorry to hear that. The examiner would not normally fail you if you couldn't see the car before you crossed the giveway line. However if you can see the car approaching at speed but still decide to go then that will likely be a fail. Also bare in mind you could have made decision too early and the situation changed before you crossed the giveway line. I wish you the best of luck with your next test, this video may help you: th-cam.com/video/_C2nV6vbazw/w-d-xo.html

Thanks
I don't really get jerkyness when pushing the clutch down unless like you said towards to end of the video i speed up then come off so the revs are too high.
Thank you very helpful🙏🙏🙏
The true secret which Mr. Richard doesnt tell us are those rainbow socks 😜
😂
I've never felt a jolt or jerk when depressing the clutch. Then again, my rubber clutch pedal covers look like they have 250,000 miles on them after 7000 miles of driving ...
wait i think im begining to understand
so the clutch is kind of how a speed changer on a bike is, taking the chain off and replacing it at another plate[speed]
i think its the same for gears , but well with gears.
The system doesnt work like that but it certainly helps to think that clutch down is the same as the chain being off the sprocket/gear.
Is your 188,000 mile Leon on original clutch? If I has I’ll be so surprised if the clutch is still original for 188,000 miles!
Some clutch pedals are like that in my experience. Some are much nicer than others. Same with gas, brakes and steering, all cars vary.
i sometimes get a clunk and jerk only with 1st gear no matter how fast I am....only 1st gear though, any idea on that?
is it important to hold at biting point even at 2nd/3rd and so on? thought I'd only need it to get the car going at 1st gear
To lift the clutch smoothly it's better to pause at the clutch bite point. This video may help: th-cam.com/video/AHna4amcsnE/w-d-xo.html
@@ConquerDriving I just watched the vid it makes sense but I still don’t get why I have to put the clutch half way when doing a turn in second gear what’s worse is I don’t know when to do it because once I freewheeled around a uphill junction and nearly hit the island in the middle of the road
i always thought it was the fact that people throw their right foot off the acellerator when changing
Has Leon almost touched 200k Richard ?
Not yet, not using it as much these days, nearly 188k now.
Driving a Manual Transmission does take Allot of Practice
400,000 Km on the same clutch, I'm not that fast on depressing it either, Ford Galaxy 2.2 TDCi.
@@ConquerDriving that’s it
I can totally understand why they failed me
But it’s a bit of a pain

But next time I’ll get it
Down quick and up slow, I am always doing both quick.......
clutch up jerk ? i mean when releasing clutch, car jerks.

I learned to drive way back in 1985 in a BSM Austin Metro. My instructor did a similar demo of the clutch v engine but with a couple of diagrams on paper! I got the message though.
First beeechas
PLEASE take the muffler off on your car
Where is the exact video for the clutch up? The video link you have in the video doesn't take it there.
