Not waiting on Justin Herbert's draft to draft a QB and signing Galloday. Honestly I Preferred shurmer over that bum Judge. You also can't have a bad offensive line for 10 out of the last 12 years. Trading odell leaving a Duke QB and an older Golden Tate to throw to.

Every year since 2011, when someone asks me, “how do you think the Giants will do this year,” I give them the same answer. “If the line can block, we have a chance. I don’t know if it’s a complete inability to draft OL talent, an inability to coach the talent, or a combination of the two but that unit has consistently stunk for THIRTEEN YEARS!!!

People say they held on to Eli too long, but I say they ruined the last few years of Eli’s career and possibly shortened it because of crap o-lines. And hasn’t gotten better since. Best teams of the past 10 or even 20 years across the league all had stellar offensive lines - SB Giants, 90s Cowboys, Brady’s Patriots, Favre and Rodgers Packers, even past couple of years of Eagles. All nothing special without those lines. Especially important as the league moves to favor the passing game. No blocking=no passing game

    • @Gungho73
      @Gungho73 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@billleeee I was going to say, when those teams with Eli had a chance people focused on the defense specifically the nascar package with that front 4. But people I think never gave that offensive line the credit it deserved. Not only did they give a young, learning QB a chance to win games but they often blasted holes with a physical run game. Their inability to reload either via FA trades or the draft on the line has set that team up for yearly failure. And they aren't talented enough on the coaching staff to circumvent that like a New England situation during a significant chapter of the Brady era.
Arguably the greatest coaching job by their rival, Joe Gibbs with Redskins, circumvented the importance of the QB position due to the dominance of their line. Their other rival, Dallas like you said, 90's featured the Great Wall of Dallas. The Eagles line of recent years. All 4 teams in the NFC East owe a tremendous amount to the hog mollies up front for their franchises best and most storied years. To see New York struggle to put together competent pass/run block units on a year to year basis is frustrating as a NFL fan who saw what they could be at their best.

Where the Giants went wrong is with a position that can't get fired and almost always escapes accountability- with the owner John Mara. Mara, I believe, held onto Eli 2 years too long probably in to get that consecutive steak record and perhaps hoping for a little magic left in the tank for one more run. Then he hires Gettlemen who didn't have a great reputation as a GM. He then okayed the Jones pick probably because he looked and acted like Eli. Mara is too old-fashioned and conservative while the rest of the league has evolved. Like, can you imagine Caleb Williams playing QB for the Giants?

People will say drafting a rb 2nd overall was huge mistake.. my argument to that is Saquon is that dude, his rookie year he showed he was worth the hype. Saquon had his best running and catching year as a rookie with Eli 1300 rushing and 730 catching.. I have no doubt had he gotten better qb play after his rookie year he would had McCaffrey numbers. Which leads to where it really went wrong...Since the 2019 nfl draft, when they drafted Daniel mothereffin Jones... He was always a backup at best. He always stank, even in college.

The problem is RBs just aren't that valuable anymore. As great as Barkley may be, they could have gotten similar production taking a RB in the 2nd or even 3rd round that year. That draft was stacked with RBs. That being said, had the Giants decided to draft a QB that year, there's a 50-50 chance they would have drafted a bust anyway. Mayfield was off the board, leaving the Giants with 4 options at QB: Josh Allen, Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, and Lamar Jackson, although taking Lamar at #2 overall would have been considered quite a reach at that time. The other 3 were considered better prospects, so they really had only a 33% chance of selecting a QB who actually pans out.

Interesting video. You bring up a few good key points about the Giants, but I feel you may have miss some of the reasons why the Giants haven't been successful.
    1. You mentioned the turnaround with the coaching staff/front office. On this You are correct, but where at the end of the video you already declared the rebuild was yet another failed one, I argue that this current rebuild was never finished yet. A true rebuild has a new GM, HC and a new quarterback and whole new roster. This is Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll second year here and they are still dealing with clearing out players they want to keep and those that don't fit what they are don't. Last year some are calling a fluke, but I would say it was more of the potential of the success due to good coaching and healthy players being consistent with their play that leas to a good season. That team showed that they can compete with the average teams, beat the really bad one, but the top teams they were still not talented enough to deal with. Going back to my rebuild point if we are being honest, the actual rebuild started back in 2018. The problem was that Dave Gentlemen wanted to both rebuild and compete at the same time, this resulted in overspending on subpar free agents and not focusing on protecting the most valuable asset for any any team, the quarterback.
    2. You mentioned that one of the team reasons for losing was the lack of drafting receivers or top receivers. Drafting receivers is important, but again, that is not the main reason. Going all the way back to 2008, Kevin Gilbride the Giants offensive coordinator at the time, warned the front office that the offensive line was get old and injured. Instead of heeding to his warning, they drafted skilled players during the 2009 and beyond years Instead of trying to rebuild the offensive line. Now they did get a few quality players for the line (Justin Pugh, William Beatty) but during Jerry Reese time, he unfortunately didn't do enough to get a solid offensive line for Eli Manning, resulting in his skills deteriorating. Gettlemen repeated the same mistakes his predsuccsor did in both the draft and free agency spending.
    3. During the 2016 to 2021, both general managers overspend on free agency, handcuffing the team, preventing them from getting quality free agents and forcing them to let go of good players who could have continued to contribute to the team. One example was a player the Giants got during the infamous Odell Beckham trade, a offensive guard from the Browns who was at the time he was with the Giants, one of their best. But because of salary cap, he was let go to free agency.
    4. As I mentioned earlier, drafting was poor during both the Reese and Gettleman years. Most of the roster were made up of players that would either be on a practice squad or not even in football. Gentleman in particular overreacted on a lot of his draft picks. For every Dexter Lawrence, there was a Kadiruos Toney taken. And when he drafted Daniel Jones, he should have seen that the 2019 draft had inferior quarterback talent.
Now I will say there is hope for this team as they right now have a few good pieces here. On defense, there's the tackle Lawrence, Kayvon Thibodeaux, a pass rushers capable of breaking games, something they did not have since letting Jason Pirere Paul go, Michael McFadden a linebacker they got in the later rounds of the draft and their rookie cornerback Banks. They have two cornerstone piece on the offensive line, LT Andrew Thomas and John Michael Smith. They have a speedy rookie receiver in Jalin Hyatt and they still have Saquon Barkley. I honestly believe they do have the right GM/head coach duo that can right the ship, if given time. Joe Schoen has already fixed their salary cap and Brian Daboll can still coach good enough to help the team. With having a high draft pick, the biggest thing that is needed going forward is patience to allow this current regime to finish the rebuild so the Giants can be a successful team and not a one hit wonder. Let's see where they are at the end of the 2024 which will give them three full years to get a nfl quality roster of players to compete.

The New York Giants offensive line has ranked at the bottom of the league every year, for a long time now. It's the reason Eli suddenly looked older, the reason Daniel Jones never got going, and the reason they lost a lot of close games. Even with one of the top receivers in Odell, or one of the top RBs in Saquon, our offense is completely dysfunctional. Injuries (everyone), bad drafting (Flowers etc), bad contracts (Nate Solder etc). Even now it's currently fighting for dead last in the league.
It's never been adequately addressed. Andrew Thomas is the lone bright spot and a critical piece, but injured often. The rookie center looks promising but he was also already out for injury so TBD. Evan Neil... we'll see. We need a core of offensive lineman to gel, and some depth for inevitable injuries beyond Justin Pugh from the couch (who I do love, but isn't the long term answer).

In my opinion, what went wrong was the development of Daniel Jones. Yes, A LOT of other factors play into this, but his stunted growth as an NFL QB is on John Mara and his impatience.
They should've kept Pat Shurmur and Mike Shula for the 2020 season, as Jones was their QB. By firing them and hiring Joe Judge and Jason Garrett, we will never know what Jones could've actually become. Think about it, Jones' simple TD/INT numbers are 24/12 in 2019, 11/10 in 2020, 10/7 in 2021, 15/5 in 2022, and 2/6 in 2023. No one knew how to coach Daniel Jones like Pat Shurmur.
Also, if Shurmur was the coach in 2020, and it all went downhill, they could've made a clean sweep by firing the ENTIRE staff, including Dave Gettleman. This would've initiated a full rebuild in 2021 that would've most likely included moving on from Jones.
John Mara's impatience of winning, not rebuilding, screwed the rebuild from the start. Plain and simple. Now he needs to sit on his hands and keep his mouth shut with this regime.
But again, that's just my thoughts and opinion.

Here’s my 2 cents on why the giants season is the way it is but it’s a little bit of a theory. I believe Brian dabs is intentionally not giving this offense the creative play calls because he wants fans and Mara realize dj is not the guy. Last year we had an arguably worse oLine and his offense was driving it down the field with Barkley and dj hitting open guys. He took them to the playoffs with that but he probably wants an elite qb to go the distance so I think he’s tanking this year and we can move on with a different qb. I know that coaches don’t usually tank but I believe he’s thinking long term and doesn’t wanna miss out on this draft class.

Also, in order to successfully rebuild, you need to hit in the draft. Look no further than 2021, 2022 and 2023. In '21, the Giants watched its two rivals make a trade so that the Philadelphia Eagles leapfrog them and take DeVonta Smith, Dallas then selected Micah Parsons. Who did the Giants get...Kadarius Toney! In 2022, the Giants used the extra first round pick from Chicago and selected...Evan Neal! Lastly, the Giants in '23 sat back again and watched wide receivers fall off the board - Jordan Addison, Zay Flowers would immediately be the no. 1 option in NY.

They haven't drafted well in forever. It's really that simple. No matter who the coaches are, we have drafted about as poorly as any team in NFL history. Shepard was the first WR to get a second contract w/ the team as far back as I can remember, and I am old as fuck. Name the last D-lineman we drafted who was an impact player. JPP? Linebacker? Carl Banks? O-lineman? Thomas had a terrible rookie season, a good second year, and a lost third season. One more year and he's gonna want a $150 million dollar contract.
Jerry Reese was a disaster at drafting. Gettleman lit the #2 and #6 picks on fire in back-to-back years, threw away our only All-Pro player cuz he dyed his hair yellow, and left the team w/ an empty roster of failed reach draft picks.
Go back to the Manning Super Bowl years. Name an All-Pro that Eli played with? An All-Pro offensive lineman? All-Pro WR? All-Pro anything? He played 290 straight games and had an All-Pro in the locker room with him for maybe 30.
This team hasn't had a stacked roster since Parcells left, full stop.

Gettleman was such an absolute moron and squandered so many good picks man. He totally blew it. He tried to start a rebuild with a RB…arguably the least important position on the field these days in Football that are often injured, offensive line dependent and have the shortest shelf lives. My god…then could have drafted Micah Parsons but came away ultimately with Kadarius Toney and Evan Neal…

There’s so much wrong with the giants but I have to disagree with you about “0 young talent on this roster to be excited for in the future”. The thing that people don’t understand and it says just how awful the Giants are at drafting and hiring GMs is that the problem is EVERYTHING. No WRs, No o-line, overpaid quarterback, and an RB that can’t stay healthy. What would one draft pick do to completely turn this team around?

The Giants have consistently been one of the most injured teams in the league over the past decade. Is it a strength & conditioning issues? The team signing injury-prone players? The MetLife turf? MetLife just installed new turf this year and it's still a problem. The team really needs to examine this.
Also, I really feel for DJ. He's a stand-up guy and I think he had the potential to be a good-to-very-good QB with the right supporting cast, but coaching changes, injuries, bad personnel decisions, and most importantly playing behind a terrible O-line destroyed any development potential. Dude is David Carr'd at this point from taking so many hits.

Have u ever had a boss that’s been a boss for 30-40 years go out and say hey let’s embrace modern cutting edge medical concepts and let’s get new technology?? This is why the Giants are always injured and always take forever to heal .. the injuries and how they have been handled this year alone should be enough to ask Mr Barnes to retire .. but the Giants love comfort so they won’t and the same exact thing will happen next year and the year after.. Andrew Thomas missed 7 weeks with a hamstring strain .. how ridiculous.

The glory days ended when Coughlin stopped being Coughlin and started letting Odell do whatever he wanted. The old Coughlin used to fine you for being "late" if you weren't 10 minutes early!
I know Daboll is having an awful year, but they can't just scrap the coaching staff again. They have to try to let Daboll and Schoen develop something over time. They were at least able to get the team to overachieve last year. And it's not like the owners are finally going to finally make the right choices for these positions the NEXT time anyway.
For the rest of 2023, let all the young guys get as much experience and learn from as many mistakes as possible. That'll also get you a nice draft spot. I like Jones personally and I really wanted it to work with him. But if Williams or Maye or some other impressive QB prospect falls into our laps (and that's very possible), I am all in. At the very least, whoever we draft can step in if/when Jones is hurt again in 2024.
See? It's that simple, haha. (Of course it isn't.)

The line needs a lot of work so whatever QB (jones, Taylor, Devito) is there can finally make connections to the newer and younger WRs. Hyatt has a lot potential but because the line is basically a turnstile it’s very rare for the QB to make dedicated targets to those WRs

Saying that there’s 0 young talent in the roster is a wild take. Kayvon is nearing a double digit sack szn in year 2, Andrew Thomas is like 25 and a top 5 player at his position, Deonte banks has been very solid as a rookie, cordage flott and Tre Hawkins have also flashed as both very young corners, Dexter lawrence is the best nose tackle in football, Hyatt doesn’t get opportunities unfortunately but when he does he’s insane averaging over 20 ypc, JMS has been very very solid for the giants as a rookie just had to deal with some injury issues, Micah McFadden in his second year has been consistently graded as a very good linebacker in the nfl this season in his second year now next to okereke who Is probably around 26 and has been a borderline pro bowl caliber player this year. Wandale robinson when healthy has also played well he just can’t stay on the field and Xavier McKinney for as annoying as he is he is a good safety who I believe has made a pro bowl and is still on his rookie deal. Jason pinnock from the jets is also only 24 and has been good for the giants as well. There’s also some more young guys who have flashed like jordon Riley and Isaiah Simmons. Azeez ojulari is an outlier because when he’s on the field he is statistically dominant but he is literally always hurt. Evan neal is one of the only young guys on the roster who has been a disaster. Daniel jones is a vet atp but I doubt he’s going to be the franchise qb moving forward so where do we get the idea they have no young talent? They have a decent bit of young talent already therefore this narrative really only comes because they don’t have a great young qb.

Drafting! Scary as hell to get a very good black quarterback. Example, when Scheon started at the helm of 2021 I believe. He was doing the Giants tradition of drafting bad players. Falele, Woolen , and Tyquan Thornton(upscale passing game). The need for speed on both sides of the ball. He could’ve gotten those players in early 2nd and 3rd rounds. Instead he let the Ravens,Patriots, and Seahawks get them when he was way ahead of them in line. That’s when I was convinced that Gettlemen was his uncle at least.

I agree regarding the Giants terrible draft record during this time period. Regarding Odell, Beckham, Jr., it’s easy to look back and say they should not have gotten rid of him. At the same time he became an absolute distraction. Add to this to the salary cap management. James Bradberry had one really good season in 2020. Otherwise Gettleman single-handedly put the Giants into the salary cap hell. This more than anything is contributed to the Giants current situation.

Not fair to criticize the OBJ trade in my opinion, the Giants had the best years of his career and they moved him on at the right time. Gettleman was much maligned, but I think that's unfair. D.Jones is a top 10 talent, if the Giants hadn't taken him he would have gone soon after. Barkley was the best talent available, and they expected him to juice up the offense from game 1. The Giants o-line has been terrible for a decade, Andrew Thomas and Evan Neil looked like smart, safe picks, it's hard to know why the o-line is still so bad.

When you have an old boys club and old mentality. Nothing will go right. Gettleman that’s it. I hope they let Barkley go, the kid deserves better. And yes again, they will get nothing for him but that’s the usual with the Giants. Right now they have too many moving parts so no one is developing properly. The rookie wr is lost out there. The 100mil qb is hurt, the OLine…… the defense is hodgepodge. Punter is inconsistent, Kicker is hurt, no return guy. I said it when Daboll was hired and they kept Jones. The year will be 2026 before they are respectable. New coach, new QB. It looks like I’m on track as much as I hate it. Let’s be honest when was the last time they beat the Eagles or the Cowboys? But here we go again a 3rd place schedule next year!!!! Yeah!!! Back to false hope. Gotta love it.

Last year was a Mirage. The N.F.L. has a Parity Ethos that gives weak teams SOFT schedules in order to give the Fan Base HOPE. The Giants benefited from playing Weak teams and Barely won a lot of close games. They faced the Bogus Viking team in the first round, then got SMASHED by the Eagles. The Giants should NOT have been FOOLED. But the Real downfall of the Giants goes back to the Gettlemen Era. Wasting two First Round Draft picks. Barkley was a Massive Mistake because that was the year where a Quarterback was to be had because Manning was running on Fumes. Then signing Jones, where that was the timing to get either a Top Choice Offensive or Defensive Line Man was the way to go. The Running Back position has been Devalued by Current N.F.L. standards because of the injury factor. And let's face it, good Backs can be had in the later Draft rounds. Barkley's best season was his Rookie season, then it's been Downhill ever since. And you guessed it, because of injuries. Then Jones, who at best would be just an N.F.L. Back-Up was instead given four years to prove just that. Winning N.F.L. teams will always do a 180 when Drafting Mistakes are made. And will rectify the error. NOT the Giants, they instead DOUBLE and TRIPLE DOWN on the Drafting Mistakes. Barkley should have been Traded or Cut after the ACL injury, Ditto for Jones who has been a TURNOVER MACHINE. Instead the Giants TRIPLED DOWN and made Barkley their Francise player and Signed Jones as a Top Flight N.F.L. Quarter Back!!!! Both got injured, with Jones tearing an ACL and out for the year. His Skinny Chicken Legs NOT able to support his bodyweight. Jones only attribute was his ability to run away from pressure. Now that he won't be able to run, good luck with his Pocket Skills. Lets face it, it's a total rebuild. From finding a Quarter Back, Receivers who can actually Catch the ball. Offensive and Defensive Linemen and a Running game too. It will start with Next years First Round Pick. Moral of the story is: ADMIT TO YOUR MISTAKES, THEN MOVE ON TO CORRECT THEM. The N.F.L. will always be about turning over team rosters A.S.A.P.

If you want to go back further Eli should have been replaced as early as after the 2014 yr when he threw 27ints. He was showing signs of fall off then, but picking up Odell and always being behind in games, helped Eli have two empty stat great years in 2014 and 2015. And by 2016 he couldn't throw beyond 10 yards anymore, yet we held on to him for THREE full years before the Daniel Jones Error began.

John Mara is to blame for all of this. In hindsight, McAdoo and Jerry Reese were on to something when they wanted to give Geno Smith a look. Not that Geno Smith was going to be our future because in 2017 he was not good, but in all likelihood they would have drafted a QB in the 2018 draft like Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson. John Mara fired them after the fan outrage towards benching Eli and there was no way Mara was going to let Gettleman and Shurmur draft a QB that spring at #2, he wanted to go all in on giving Eli one last dance. Then drafted a QB a year too late, Daniel Jones is a good guy but he wasn't worth drafting at #6. Mara has defended Danny the last 5 years and will continue to. Let's hope he doesn't fire Daboll & Schoen this off season because after 4 head coaches & 3 GMs in 8 years, there would be little reason to continue supporting this team.

As a Giants fan, I feel like there’s plenty of young talent to be excited about. That’s not the problem. Running it back with Jones, mishandling injuries, poor depth and key ingame decisions are the differences between this team being .500 or better and the current 2-7.
Daboll and Schoen took some risks with the way the way they approached this season and they’ve nearly all backfired. Jones’ regression from a competent game manager to backup level play and some highly questionable coaching on Dabolls part just compounded that problem.
This is a team that can be a QB away from having a .500 floor in my opinion. With them lines up to have a top 5 pick, drafting Caleb Williams or Drake Maye can change their fortunes overnight.

the personnel on this team is REALLY bad and the way that some of the important positions have been managed has been really poor, specifically QB, and we’re still paying for the sins of Gettleman’s dreadful draft classes, mainly 2021. Despite Evan Neal being picked Joe Schoen’s first two draft classes already look incredibly better than any of Gettleman’s. But I don’t believe that there is much that Dabes/Schoen could have done other than not given into Jones’ demands and brought back one of Gates/Feliciano. But also they obviously wanted to try to let Ezeudu make it into the starting mix and were planning to get younger at Center. Bobby Johnson is clearly a bad apple on this staff. If anything, after this year they should be commended for what they did last year. They already have accomplished more in their time here than any of the past 10 other years. I wouldn’t be surprised if this team improves next year with the addition of a new QB and more protection up front in the pass and trenches. The part that sucks is idk where Saquon is aligned in the future for us.

The problem is, the Giants have never committed to a full rebuild. At the deadline they did deal Leonard Williams but held onto Xavier Mckinney, Adoree Jackson, Saquon Barkley, Darius Slayton etc. All of those players should have been dealt because I know for a fact none are in the future plans of the organization, nor should they. During the Dave Gettleman era, he never did either (acquired Leonard Williams, sent picks to NYJ). I'll watch different games on Sunday (because the Giants obviously are a tough watch) and it's nuts to imagine anything but mediocrity from the offense. For one, they only have one capable lineman (JMS hasn't played enough). They have such a lackluster group of pass catchers. Wan'Dale Robinson, Jalin Hyatt and Darius Slayton aren't even a #3 across most of the NFL. Daniel is far from being absolved - too erratic, misses throws from time-to-time and has thrown some costly interceptions. The major difference - he can't have a so-so game and this team win which can't be said for teams like Philly, San Fran, Dallas and other playoff contenders.

The giants overachieved in 2022 big time the front office probably wanted a long term rebuild but ownership was sick of losing so instead of seeing that the team overachieved and couldn’t duplicate that success ownership was stubborn and forced the team to bring back saquon and pay Daniel jones ownership basically forced the team to try and duplicate that success but in reality the giants were just never a good roster

Micah McFadden is one of the most underrated linebackers in the National Football League.
That’s a ridiculous amount of players to build around. If they can just get a quarterback.

Tbf we didn’t rebuild , we didn’t even go all out for rebuild capable players. We signed a few decent players in Offseason but not a rebuild worthy kind of offseason. The gm is playing it smart by low risks

  • @jimglatthaar4053
    @jimglatthaar4053 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

It is hard to settle on one reason since there have been so many. Gettelman was a disaster as a GM. He foolishly let himself by charmed by Daniel Jones so he responded by overdrafting Jones, then lied to everyone saying he "knew for a fact" that another team was going to draft Jones so he was forced to draft him when he did. Three consecutive head coaches (McAdoo, Shurmer & Judge) were bad hires. None were leaders of men. As you pointed out, most of the Giants draft choices, particularly at wide receiver, did not work out. Whether this was due to bad scouting, bad drafting or bad coaching remains a point of debate. All in all, there are many reasons for the Giants' failed rebuild. Hopefully, they can turn it around.

Giants fans who say every QB coming out is overrated, or that they should build the roster and save QB for last, or that Devito or jones are the answer are so delusional. These are the same people that would have said pass on a QB in 2004 and build around Kerry collins or older Kurt Warner. Besides giants already tried that approach of drafting everything but QB,when they def needed one, when they did shit like draft Beckham and Barkley and it didn’t work
