    I first saw this film when I was 11 yrs old. I've always been a horror junkie and this film and it's sequel are easily some of the greatest of all time. The late 70s and all through the 80s were the golden years of horror. Practical effects, actual plots, and frightening story lines. Unbeatable.

      Mainstream?

    • @DennisSema
      @DennisSema 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I am pretty sure Cinemassacre will eventually cover this film. As James Rolfe said, there are still many horror films that they have not covered but will. Calling them mainstream or delving into mainstream things mostly is a huge misconception and their focus is classic horror, much superior to modern horror. There is more to love about Cinemassacre aside from AVGN too. Board James, Monster Madness, James and Mike Monday’s, and while I am not a huge fan of the rental reviews at all, they are still fun to watch.

    • @VVEmil
      @VVEmil 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DennisSema Cabinet of Dr Caligari, Mr Sardonicus and others films they covered are most definitely not mainstream.

    • @DennisSema
      @DennisSema 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      V. V. Emil I never said they were mainstream. Those films are far from mainstream, but Cinemassacre’s Monster Madness tends to cover mainstream horror as well as lesser known horror, and with the latter, they are phenomenal at that.

    Nevermind the sequel's explanation: if you look at the film as a standalone, the whole thing is a Jacob's Ladder scenario where the main character tries to overcome a major trauma and move on with his life through his dreams. Except in this case, he fails and is consumed by his fear and grief.

    This film's theme has haunted the dark corners of my mind since I saw it in the early '80s. The tune is a little reminiscent of Tubular Bells from The Exorcist -- some of the best spine-tingling music to ever score a horror film (alongside John Carpenter's Halloween, The Fog, and The Thing). Thanks for the vid!
    As an aside, have you considered doing an "Exploring..."-style commentary/review of film scores? (If such already exists, ignore me; just discovered your channel this morning and have been binge-watching all day. Love your work! Two dewclaws up!)

    I'm gonna say it here: LOVE your reviews, man. But this one struck a really particular string in me. The Phantasm movies, especially the first two, have always seemed to me so... Bradbury-ish. I mean, the atmosphere, the face of the evil, and the idea of overcoming one's fears... And you put my puzzle together because I didn't know that Coscarelli was initially planning to film "Something Wicked"! It was soooo rewarding. Thank you for your thoughts and appreciation for this masterpiece.

    Seeing the sequel last night, I couldn't help but think that this franchise was probably a big influence on Eric Kripke when he created SUPERNATURAL. The Winchester Brothers. The car. Traveling from town to town battling otherworldly evil. The gun collection. Honestly, a SUPERNATURAL/PHANTASM crossover would be totally natural.

      @no1 Jack
      I think that setting "OblIVion" in the desert was a very poor choice.
      But I did love the flashback scenes that utilized some of the unused footage from the original film.

      Hontoni Arigato... I don’t know if you belong on tik tok... Or you just haven’t seen many films! Either way... that’s one of the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard about horror movies! I bet you’re a fan of death metal too... you dingus!!!

    I REALLY need to see these movies in a marathon or something, never watched them all the way though since I caught them on cable TV not at the beginning. As a PC gamer in the 90s, there was one villain that the Tall Man reminded me of, and that was Henry Stauf form The 7th Guest. They both were genuinely creepy looking old men, only Stauf was an vagrant turned evil toymaker making a bargain with something "form beyond" sending him visions. Tall Man comes off as some kind of Lovecraftian entity like a Denizen of Leng or something. Great review!

    There are plenty of horror fans who are car lovers. Especially hotrods and muscle cars. A lot of horror accessories and themes are incorporated into classic car culture.

    ENTOMBED!!
    For my fellow Metalheads, Entombed come from the Gothenburg scene, AKA: Swedish Death Metal.
    Other notable bands with a similar sound are Dismember, Grave, Dissection, In Flames, At the Gates, and more recently Bloodbath (Mikael Akerfeldt's of Opeth). Check out this killer subgenre.
    Phantasmagorical!

    This was the first official terrifying film I saw as a kid (aside from JAWS)...I was 10 years old, at a sleepover in 4th grade, and this movie freaked me out SO MUCH that I couldn’t get to sleep that night and was afraid to go into my own room or any dark room in my house for days after. I just watched it again for the first time today, and I finally got to see again what was cemented in my brain as a kid. It isn’t nearly as scary now as it was then, but the effects still hold up pretty good. That flying ball with the knives and drill was one of the most horrifying things in my childhood, and that tall man haunted my imagination for years. I saw this at a sleepover in 1980 or 81, but wasn’t that before VCRs at home? I don’t know how we got to see it. Was cable a thing in 1981? Could it have been on a cable channel that long ago? We certainly weren’t renting movies in those days.
