So overjoyed to find your vid. Just watched one on another channel on TH-cam with a jeweler advising & demonstrating how to SCRUB vintage jewelry with a toothbrush, rinsing under running water. No mention of drying the piece. I even saved in my community file. I'd best go back & delete it! I even commented about how the technique scared me. The debunked info would ruin most of my collection... Listen to that inner voice, BookBwitched!! How many times have you denied your internal wisdom to your actual peril, let alone risking your beloved collection of foil backed rhinestone jewelry? Dumbazz, you even married him! Saved the jewelry but only just & it took a vid to stop you.
Thank You Dawn! Very helpful tips I learned the hard way about how to clean ab rhinestones 😢 I had never thought to use the rubber handle to re set prongs! That will definitely save some jewelry from accidentally getting scratched. Have a Great day 🤗
I thought I already knew the proper techniques and this would be a refresh, boy was I wrong - I have been using the wrong fabric textures, and completely killing my rolled gold! Amazing tip at the end re: keeping the dollar store cake tray/roll of Viva in the car for shopping adventures, and at home for storage. Thank you so much!
Hi~ I shared in the Texas Gal Treasures with Margaret fun. Great video, I learned some tips I did not know. I also love the upside down cake carrier idea. Perfect! Looking forward to watching more videos!
These were some great tips for cleaning jewelry! I've heard that the best way to store sterling silver jewelry to keep it from tarnishing is to store them in clear plastic bags, and also, wearing them keeps them from tarnishing. I have to confess, since I don't have a ton of jewelry, I keep each piece in an individual box or drawstring pouch. BTW, love that cake keeper idea! I already have a cake keeper, but I actually use it for its intended purpose, so will need to get one from the dollar store when I need to transport some jewelry ;) TFS!
Yes plastic bags are really good. You can also slip a little anti tarnish fabric into individual fabric pouches. Thanks for mentioning the cake keeper, it seems so simple but it really works. I used them to get my jewelry across country with no damage! XO~Dawn
Another great tool is a CHILDREN'S toothbrush. I've used them to clean hundreds of pieces of jewelry without a single scratch. They're very soft, so with a light brushing they dislodge dirt or dust or fibers safely. The brushing motion also reveals any loose stones. A soft brushing, followed with a gentle rub using a really soft cotton cloth, is often all that's required. I often use eyeglass cleaning cloths from the optician. If a rhinestone piece still isn't sparkling enough to suit me, I take one final step. I have to preface this by saying that I've never read about this method, and it's possible that experts would shriek in horror over it. I can only say that I've been using it successfully for over 20 years. However, great care must be taken because there is risk of deadening a rhinestone if any moisture gets trapped under the foil backing. Rhinestones are glass, so Windex makes them really sparkle. However, do NOT spray the Windex anywhere near the jewelry. Spray a FINE mist onto a cotton cloth -- so fine that the cloth does not feel wet to the touch. Hold the piece of jewelry UPSIDE DOWN, gently smooth the cloth over the surface of the rhinestones, then place the jewelry, still upside down, on a soft surface and leave it until it's completely dry. (The purpose of keeping the piece upside down throughout the process is to ensure that no moisture drips down to the foil backing.)
I've done that in extreme cases but with the cotton swab. The eyeglass cloth is also great, I actually meant to include it in the video but by the time I sat under the camera I didn't feel like untangling myself to get it. THANK you for sharing with all of us! I must say though, work up to the windex as a last resort! Excellent comment M. Wallace! XO~Dawn
I also store all of my jewelry in drawers lined with anti-tarnish cloth. I also keep silica gel packs in the drawers since I live in Houston and it is sooooo humid here!
Yeah, you are definitely one of my new favorite channels!!! It's like you read my mind. I actually have been wondering about the cleaning of my collection. BTW, what is your thoughts about keeping pieces in those little plastic bags? I've seen a lot of sellers do that?? Thank you again for sharing your knowledge!!! Lori
Welcome aboard! Those bags are good for moving things so they don't scratch each other, but bad for foiled stones or hand painted things, etc. Also you don't want to cram big statement necklaces into little bags, the wire or chains in some of them don't like that. Use discretion! (Or break down and get the trays and the anti-tarnish fabric, you'll thank me later) XO~Dawn
Hi Dawn, this is such a great video to watch with some great advice. I'm not sure why I haven't watched this yet? I use the proper cleaning clothes but always unsure of what to do with pearls. I have all my mummys pearls which I have cleaned professionally as I would hate to do the wrong thing by them. Thank you for all the tips! ✌💜xx
Hi p.r. Sadly no, they are goners.. If they have glass bases you can wash them in hot water and then just peal all the coating off. The base is kind of a transparent white glass that could be interesting depending on the piece. Or harvest the findings XO~Dawn
Great info. I just bought a beautiful pair of vintage gold plated Kenneth Jay Lane rhinestone earrings that need cleaned. What is your opinion on using rubbing alcohol with a q-tip to clean and/or brighten the rhinestones? Thank you in advance if you decide to answer! 😃
For plain silver jewelry you can use water with baking soda to polish it..mix the baking soda with water to make a paste, then rub it on the silver piece as if your a scrubbing it..leave it to stay for a while and then rinse it under running water..it gets shiny as new..😊 Love your videos Dawn..I thought initially that your pony tail is a big fluffy brush with which you will dust some of your jewelry pieces..😃 I love your authenticity and sense of humor and I cannot believe that you are 53..you look amazing..🌹
I HAVE SOME FAKE PEARLS THAT ARE EXTREMELY YELLOW, SHOULD I CLEAN THEM THE SAME WAY, HOW DO I GET THEM LOOKING ALMOST NEW AGAIN? THANK YOU, BLESSINGS TO YOU.

I also use a baby's first toothbrush nice n soft or even a super soft/fine artist paint brush what I like about that is the longer bristles
I also store all of my jewelry in drawers lined with anti-tarnish cloth. I also keep silica gel packs in the drawers since I live in Houston and it is sooooo humid here!

Hi I did a video on Caring for vintage jewelry, the answer is no moisture,! Thank you so much for watching Xo~Dawn
HUDSON VINTAGE your most welcome
👍
How do you clean real pearls
Never submerge them! A lightly damp cloth, almost dry :)
