Yes that we did. So our economy is diversified. We have natural resources like crude oil, natural gas & palm oil but we also have a good manufacturing sector. That’s what Malaysia been doing all this while. If you look at Asean the only country who depends on mining are the Philippines & Indonesia
Thank you for the info YB. However there are a few details need to be highlighted. 1. 40% of our export is E&E products, not semiconductor alone. E&E products include other products which are not semiconductor. 2. Our semiconductor industry mainly focuses on Testing and Packaging only. This means we IMPORT ' raw die' from other countries and package them here. Our involvement in wafer manufacturing, chip design and IC manufacturing is still weak. 3. Our involvement in finished products is also weak, for example communication system, power electronics, new energy system, etc.
The future is semiconductor, the industry is not going away short of global cataclysm. We have relatively small manpower so industry concentration is inevitable
Semiconductor is pretty solid investments, Taiwan economy is successful because of this sector too. I'm more worried of our over reliance on oil and gas. This shift toward SC is much more secure to me.
yea, semicon is solid investment. This is industry will not shrink, future will demand more of this as this is a crucial part of modern civilization. One cannot move forward w/o semicon, almost everything being produced today have some parts of semicon even thing as simple as hair dryer.
Distribute the area of industrialization to include East Coast such Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang. Don't only focus at same area like Penang and Selangor
Where are all assembling of final products that require IC chips are now located? Where is the biggest market? If China mastered the art of producing chips at various nodes at competitive prices in a few years, do you still need elsewhere to produce chips? Even if you produce, can you compete with China comparative advantage - integrated supply chain in one country, high STEM takents, cheap energy n water resources. Point you need to ponder as well....

Malaysia you probably need answer the boycott issues which doesn't seem like a stable foreign investment choice when the public have boycotted so many foreign companies like Mcdonalds and Starbucks. Also Malaysia is nowhere as neutral as Thailand or Indonesia when it comes to global politics. Nor is it a cheaper labour cost. While all I say here is rhetoric, I don't think the general Malaysian masses understand how hard it is to pull sales into country.
Semiconductor companies are not selling chips to local companies. Some are but the majority of them are not. They are invested here to be exported to the US, China, Japan, Europe, etc. So the boycott should not be an issue. The whole BDS thing also has been occurring for over a decade already & it hasn't pushed foreign investors elsewhere. For countries like Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam to reach Malaysia's level of expertise in semiconductors will take decades. Stop over exaggerating this BDS issue. I don't know why Chinese Malaysians are so pro the J land so much. The whole world is getting sick of them. BDS is happening all across the globe not just in Malaysia.
