Very Helpful thank you. I am an intermediate user so I still have a few things to learn and this video showed me something I didn't know, specifically the Circle Array. Now, you asked for suggestions. I have a big one. I am making Printers Boxes for family members and there is one aspect that is driving me crazy I can't figure out. Here it is, and I apologies if I use wrong terminology: I am using Cross Halving joints on 5 horizontal boards and Cross Halving 3 vertical boards so when slid together it will give me 24 boxes when set into the frame. Here's my dilemma. Evenly spacing the cross halving cutouts within the total box. When I design five 3mm x 38.1mm cutouts on the 11" x 3" slats, I use the evenly distribute feature in Lighburn, then I join the boxes with the slat and using the measuring tool to measure the distance between each cut out reads that they are never the same. The inner three are the same, but the top and bottom are off from the inner ones and each other. Now to be honest, they are only off by thousands of a mm so maybe it doesn't matter. example. 1.5249, 1.5272, 1.5272, 1.5272, 1.5236. It just strikes me odd that a computer program wouldn't be more dead on accurate. I'm somewhat of a perfectionist, so tell me the truth, am I making too much out of this?
First Thank you for watching and leaving such a detailed question! Love this! It sounds like you’re tackling an intricate project with impressive precision! LightBurn’s distribution tool should indeed be pretty accurate, but you're right that sometimes it can yield results with tiny inconsistencies, especially if the dimensions don’t perfectly align with the software’s rounding. Here are a few ways to address it: 1. Check Snapping and Rounding Settings: Sometimes, rounding or snap-to-grid settings can slightly alter spacing. In LightBurn, ensure these are set to your needs (or temporarily disable snapping if it interferes). 2. Use Exact Measurements: Instead of relying solely on the "distribute" function, you could try calculating the precise center points for each cutout and manually input them to match your exact measurements. 3. Consider Minimal Tolerance: With woodworking and laser engraving, a thousandth of a millimeter is often negligible in the final product, especially with wood that can expand or contract slightly. But, as a perfectionist, if those numbers are bugging you, feel free to double-check with a manual setup. In short, you’re right about LightBurn not always being perfectly accurate on such a microscopic level, but if the spacing looks consistent visually and functions well, you’re likely on track. That said, experimenting with the manual measurement method might give you the extra precision you're looking for!
I love that you include that little extra piece on top for the twine or ribbon! Absolutely incredible project today!! Thank you so much! I would love to see other holiday projects besides ornaments. Like a box or cutting board or game board of some kind. Thank you so so much! ❤

Thank you for the awesome Tutorial! I just recently purchased my first laser and feel like I'm to far behind for Halloween and Thanksgiving Crafts to make and sell, so starting straight with Christmas stuff. I don't have lightburn yet but plan on purchasing in the future. I currently use Xtool's XCS and it has almost similar features, I have to play with some of the settings to get them to do similar functions as lightburn but it is all working out. Knowledge is power and I feel confident enough to make pretty much anything already just by seeing it. Again Thank you again for taking the time to make these videos to help educate others!

Welcome aboard! A CO2 Laser, SWEET! You can definitely do more than me with that. I'll have more tutorials up soon. It looks like I can get about 1 uploaded per week so stay tuned for Friday.
Hi Steve, thanks for your great and detailed instruction, this was great. Kind of a newbie for laser stuff. I haven't got a machine yet, just learning at the moment. So thanks, trying to learn lots.
Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm thrilled to hear that my instructions are helping you as you dive into the world of lasers. Keep learning and asking questions!
Excellent beginner Tutorial...I will follow your steps and make an ornament...I am just starting to learn Lightburn so I do not have suggestions for additional tutorials...I don't know what I don't know...keep the content coming...
Still using the trial version of Lightburn. But learning what other functions do is very helpful. I use Flex sign for my sign shop so some of this is similar to me but, it's still nice to watch some of the more advanced functions. Subscribed.
Nice tutorial and thanks for the download. Very creative. A couple of things that I do...just my preference, that might make your design process a little easier. When I want to group/ungroup I select the image and then right click. The menu that comes up allows you to group/ungroup without having to go all the way to the top of LB. Also, I noticed that you were using your mouse by hand to do fine movements in lining up for the Boolean function. If you select something and then use the Ctrl + Shift HOLD and then use the arrow keys it will move your image in smaller increments allowing you to place it where you want just a little easier.
Awesome! Thanks for the tips. I usually use the hotkeys for Group (Ctrl + G) and UnGroup (Ctrl + U) but I thought the video would be better as an instructional video if I waited until later videos to introduce hotkeys. That being said I didn't know about the Ctrl + Shift HOLD for the adjustments I'll use that from now on.
Really nice work, dude. I wish that you would do something that so many people fail to do on TH-cam. Provide a really nice beauty shot of the product at the end that allows us to see exactly what the final product looks like, close up, and with all of its detail. Thank you.
Thanks! Great suggestion I find I often get excited toward the end of the process and I'll remember to take more staged photos of the product! Keep the ideas coming!
Thank you! I really appreciate your clear directions on using Lightburn! With tutorials like this I may just subscribe to LB now! Please keep the tutorials coming.
Thanks I know I have other projects in the works, Cutting boards, etc... but I'm sure I'll make some more tutorials of the projects I'm building for my upcoming craft show!

Nice design. While you are dragging your elements around, if you hold CTRL while dragging, it will not snap to points. Makes it easy to fine tune while dragging. Great work on your videos.

Nice that your doing Christmas stuff now, gives people time to practice and still have time to make items. Also like that you're including canva as well. Thanks for sharing...
@@wilmerwoodworks No, I'm pretty new, I'm just enjoying what you've done so far, I think maybe going into detail on layers, tool/fill/cut, and maybe how to save different settings and getting back to those settings would be helpful, but Im happy just following along :)
Thanks.... awesome video.. I see you are running version 1.7 of Lightburn. Please bring on more videos showing related... I should mention that I subscribed
Love it, thank you! Would love seeing more in the structure you have set up, could bring in alittle bit of the finishing process too. I am trying one but my snowflakes only have six points I guess and can not get to the point where I have three points touching the circles. Think it will be as issue?
Thank you so much for watching! Your snowflake shouldn't have an issue if it isn't too thin. I suggest you cut a small piece of cardboard and use that to make a "practice" cut so you don't waste your material. That's what I do with all of my left-over Amazon boxes 😂.
I'm planning on getting the Xtool s1 in the next month or so and know I will need lightburn tutorials so I subscribed for later. :) P.S. Years ago I had a CNC router machine that came with inexpensive pro or a free version software that was simple to use. To do the really cool stuff you needed the aftermarket very expensive software (don't remember the name) but OMG it was like trying to figure out how to fly the friggin space shuttle. Hoping Lightburn is not that ridiculous.
That's awesome to hear you're getting the Xtool s1! Lightburn tutorials will definitely help you get the hang of things-it's much more user-friendly than those complicated software programs! What CNC did you have? I had one of the CarveWright machines when it came out and it was a NIGHTMARE!
@@wilmerwoodworks I had the X-carve back in 2018 or so. I was doing mostly carves on expensive hardwood and it was very easy to ruin a piece for half a dozen different reasons including even a brief power outage. It was very frustrating. Anyway, laser cutting and engraving looks much more reliable with exponentially more possibilities.
Hi Steve! Love the videos super helpful. I'm looking to cut out words on the laser and have them joined together instead of cutting out individual letters. It seems simple, but I've been struggling with it. If you could do a video on this, it would be super helpful. For example, I tried cutting "Merry Christmas," and while I managed to do it, the connections between some letters were too thin. When pushing the letters out of the wood, they broke, so it didn't end up as one cohesive piece. Hope that makes sense. Thank you so much for being so generous and providing free downloads as well. Super nice of you!!!
Thanks for Watching! As long as the text is a script were the text is touching you could weld it together but the dot on the "i" will not be attached. I'll make a video covering different ways to handle text in the future. If you could send me an email with a design you are trying to create so I could see how you are trying to cut out the text that might be helpful. My email is in the video description.
Thanks for the video. Just found your channel through the TH-cam algorythm. Keep up the good work. Not shure where you are located, but if you ever come by Charlotte NC, stop by the MakerSpaceCharlotte and say Hi. Enjoyed the video, great information. I have one question - 'Once I weld the two outer circles and holding shift click on my snowflake I'm selecting the entire circle of snowflakes which doesn't work - what might cause this? I've watched the video and followed your steps a dozen times.. same results.. Any insight would be appreciated..
Thanks so much for you tutorial it was very well put together. I would like to know how to cut and engrave vegetable tanned leather. I have the Creality Falcon 2 Pro 40W. Thanks again!
Hey thanks for watching! I had to look up vegetable tanned leather lol. I have only cut wood and cardboard never tried leather before. What are you making out of it?
Thanks, I enjoyed the video and learned a lot in the process. I've designed a few of these now but am having trouble cutting them out without scorching on the top surface. I've tried several different settings to no avail. Can you do a video on ways to avoid that? Yours looks perfect. Thanks again...
Thanks for watching. I can definitely make a video on improving your cuts. My first thoughts are check that the distance from the laser to the workpiece is correct, make sure the air assist is on, and finally cut on a honeycomb bed. Hope this helps.
Hi Brilliant tutorial. I have been trying to cut a number from a frosted background, but every tutorial I watch, it doesn’t work when I try it. It’s just a frosted square background 12 in x 12in then a number 50 in the centre not frosted. If you could help,I would really appreciate it.👍👍👍😍
Thanks for watching! I'm glad you liked the tutorial. I think I understand your issue but if you could send me an email with the files you are working with or screenshots of the issue I will try to put together a quick video for you. You can find my e-mail address in the video description.
I am a new in the laser world. I have a P2 and the m1 ultra This is amazing I'm using the XCS and I was wondering should I get the Lightburn software and would easy to set up the project in Lightburn better then XCS. Is a lot to learn because I have to learn what setting and everything else. For sure do more videos on ornaments and Christmas idea. I will be asking questions for sure. Glad I found you. God bless you. Oh love the DIY. Thanks
I have never used XCS (I don't have an X-tool - but if they want to send me one 🎁👍) I like Lightburn it does everything I need it to do and works well with my current setup. Happy you found the channel and yes I have more Christmas Ideas I'm working on now so I'll have more videos soon.
It depends what you plan to do. If you are going to make ornaments like the one in this tutorial I would suggest 1/8" or 3mm because that is what I found works best. It will also depend on what type of laser you have a 10w or 12w would be fine with 1/8". I would start with basswood ply and don't forget to run a test pattern to get your settings dialed in.
I’m so glad I came across your channel! I’ve been trying to give myself a crash course on LB!😂 When following your tutorial for this awesome ornament, I’m having trouble with the Boolean Union of the small snowflakes. It will only work on 9 and then stops. I’ve created several from the beginning and it’s still the same results. The first 9 weld perfectly, then it just stops. Even if I jump around and pick in a different order, still Only does 9. Any ideas?
I'm not sure I understand the question. You can weld many shapes at once but you can only use the Boolean Union on 2 shapes. So you could group all of the snowflakes together and then use the Boolean Union on the snowflake and the ring. If you could send me an email with screenshots of what you are working with or even the LB file I might be able to help better. My email is found on the video description. Thanks for watching and I hope we can get this fixed for you soon.
In Lightburn you can type the in the inch value in the measurement box if you have it set to MM (as I do) and it will convert it to MM. I.e. if I type in 2.in (no spaces) in the measurement (when I have mine set to MM) it will convert that value in the Measurement to 50.00 (To MM). I have tried not this having Inches as my standard measurement but I would think if it converts it to my standard MM it would also convert 50.0mm (No spaces) to 2.0 inches.
There is NO WAY I would be able to cut that on my laser. All that little stuff would just burn up. Curious as to what wood you used. Great instruction.
You can definitely cut it on your laser as long as it's a 10w or higher. The key to getting a clean cut is to have the air assist on (if you don't have it you might be able to add it) and to cut on a honeycomb bed. What type of laser do you have? The wood I used is just basswood 12x12 sheets I found on Amazon - amzn.to/3XRHooO
This is great, thank you! I'd like to know how to change the cut settings for just part of an element. For example, around 11:30 you talked about the Boolean Union. Is there a way to change the edge of the snowflake to a score line while the rest of the snowflake does what the Boolean Union did? I can email you an example if that helps, it is hard to explain.
Great question! I think I understand your question but if you could send me an email. I'll take a look! My email should be at the bottom of the video description!
Here is how I would do that: Before making the union, make a copy of the elements you want to score (or fill). Put them on another layer. Set the appropriate properties for that layer - score or fill. Go back to the original parts and perform the union. You may want/need to toggle the visibility of score layer to make it easier. You MUST keep these layers all aligned. My thought on this video was that scoring the full shapes of the circle of snowflakes would look good. The problem would be where the snowflakes overlap with each other width-wise, To address this, I would change the order of what was done in the video. I would do a union of all the snowflakes before their union with the rings. Copy the merged snowflakes and make a score layer from that. Then go back and merge the rings with original snowflake-ring, all of which would be a cut layer. After these operations, you would have have a one cut layer with the union of the ring and snowflake ring, plus one score layer of just the snowflake ring. If you want the name bar, that would be added to the union of the ring and snowflake ring. The name could either be part of the scored snowflake ring, or, what I would do is add a third layer that is the name, scored or filled. As in the video, the last step would be to add the hanger.
Hello Steve. I have a question not related to this video, but since you asked for questions, I need to ask you to see if you can help me out. I made a cribbage board out of purple heart and maple and don't to mess it up. I want to engrave the lines around the tracks but my laser has only a 16" x 16" bed. I have a longer 5 10w laser. Do you have any ideas or thoughts on how to do that? Thanks
I would use register marks and the Print and Cut feature. I'll put a video out soon showing that feature but until then check out this video th-cam.com/video/n__saOKVupA/w-d-xo.html
so when i click the 2 welded outer circles then the exact same snowflake you have. the boolean function grays out. the only way i can get it to work is if i ungroup the snowflake and then click 2 circles then outer most vector of the snowflake. i can send you a video if you tell me where to send it
Hi. Iv'e being following this tutorial but have a problem. When you select the snowflake it literally selects the snowflake. When i select the snowflake, it selects it as an image with a box around it. So then when i put it into an array I cannot select the inner circle to do the weld because it selects one of the snowflakes. Any Idea what i'm doing wrong?
I imported a transparent .svg file. I think you have an image with a background on it. Try hitting Alt + t or right click and choose trace image. Then take the tracing and delete the image. This should fix your issue. Thanks for watching!
Instead of adding each small star in the ring one by one, select all and weld them all at once, then boolean to the rings. Totally unnecessary to weld the two circles first since they do not touch. Select all the inner shapes, (weld) then select that group and (union) to the inner circles.
Hey thanks for watching! Yeah I try to learn more every day. Just trying to keep things simple before going crazy with hotkeys. Don’t worry I’ll get better!

Nice work ! Thanks for the tutorial and sharing
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks for the video.
Now I know what I will do for my collegues for christmas :)
NICE!
It was a really helpful video, thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Would like to see a video on cut and print, like your sight keep up good work
This is a great suggestion! It could be very helpful since I think a lot of people don't even know about that feature!
Nice work.
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks.... awesome video.. I see you are running version 1.7 of Lightburn. Please bring on more videos showing related... I should mention that I subscribed
Thanks, will do!
Great Art!
Thanks I'm glad you like it!
Great video. Just a heads up in case you're an Amazon affliate; your basswood link in the description is pointing at the laser and not the basswood.
😱 thanks 🙏 for the heads up 👍
Love it, thank you!
Excellent video! Thank you for the free download. What is the thickness of the wood?
1/8” / 3mm
Tip: After you centered the second snowflake…holding CTRL will keep the second snowflake centered and resize it.
Thanks 🙏
This was awesome! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
very good video and extremely helpful thank you!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching.
My email is in the video description.
hold control when resizing and the selected element will stay centered
Good to know 👍
Thanks for the video. Just found your channel through the TH-cam algorythm. Keep up the good work. Not shure where you are located, but if you ever come by Charlotte NC, stop by the MakerSpaceCharlotte and say Hi. We just moved into a bigger building and have a much bigger space to build out our laser department.
Thanks, will do! I'm in SW FL so I'm not sure when I'll might be in the area but I'll definitely make a note!
@@wilmerwoodworks I was born and raised in Naples, Florida. Graduated from Immokalee High School 1989. Moved to Charlotte, NC in 2016. I am launching a business that will involve laser engraving, etc... My niche market is Bigfoot related merch. Hope you survived the hurricane. Frank.
@@wilmerwoodworks Thank you, it does help.
Good stuff!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Hi Brilliant tutorial. I have been trying to cut a number from a frosted background, but every tutorial I watch, it doesn’t work when I try it. It’s just a frosted square background
12 in x 12in then a number 50 in the centre not frosted.
@@wilmerwoodworks Thank you for your responding back. Which one of the Lightburn if I purchase the Pro.
Good tutorial and I'm just beginning. What I don't know is what wood/material is best to use for something like this? 1/8" or 1/16" - mdf or plywood?
It depends what you plan to do. If you are going to make ornaments like the one in this tutorial I would suggest 1/8" or 3mm because that is what I found works best. It will also depend on what type of laser you have a 10w or 12w would be fine with 1/8". I would start with basswood ply and don't forget to run a test pattern to get your settings dialed in.
I’m so glad I came across your channel! I’ve been trying to give myself a crash course on LB!😂
When following your tutorial for this awesome ornament, I’m having trouble with the Boolean Union of the small snowflakes. It will only work on 9 and then stops. I’ve created several from the beginning and it’s still the same results. The first 9 weld perfectly, then it just stops. Even if I jump around and pick in a different order, still
Only does 9.
This is a great tip! I had no idea thanks for sharing.
Try decreasing power and/or increasing speed. You could also try lower power and speed and making 2 passes.
Unrelated - not to be greedy, but would you consider putting the wreath & bow version up, too?
Great video_ what was the Cut time?
Sorry it took so long for me to respond. It was about 18 to 20 minutes.
Thank you very much for answering
the boolean union is not working for me. wonder if it's because i'm running ver 1.401
It should still work with v1.4. I'm using v1.7 myself. What is it doing? Did you select only 2 objects at 1 time?
so when i click the 2 welded outer circles then the exact same snowflake you have. the boolean function grays out. the only way i can get it to work is if i ungroup the snowflake and then click 2 circles then outer most vector of the snowflake. i can send you a video if you tell me where to send it
Weird, but we'll figure this out. Please send me a video and I'll see if I can see what's going on; Steve@WilmerWoodWorks.com
je n'arrive pas à répéter circulairement les brins de neige. Qu'est-ce que je ne fait pas bien?
Avez-vous cliqué sur le "Circular Array"?

Thanks for the tip! I find repeating certain steps helps with retention when learning or teaching new skills. Appreciate you watching!
if you would have done it as a virtual array you would only have to select 1 of the elements
I didn’t know you could do a virtual circular array. I know you can with a grid array. Where do you find virtual circular array option?
@@wilmerwoodworks You are correct it doesn't supports it. At one point I thought it supported it.
More videos
Will do!
Nice work but you yourself need to watch videos to get all shortcut functions buddy
Hey thanks for watching! Yeah I try to learn more every day. Just trying to keep things simple before going crazy with hotkeys. Don’t worry I’ll get better!
