I remember the early days of EFRT when Carol was camera shy and mute…
Then to see and feel her excitement has added even more natural energy to the videos like today’s episode.
And yes you need a bike of some kind, a battery pack for the engine compartment battery and cables (backup, you never know)
Although I am surprised that the company that built your truck didn’t include that kind of utility

    • @EFRT

I’m learning to just be myself 😊 Funny how shy I use to be.
I believe RossMonster does have that option we just didn’t think of it till now 😅 Definitely looking into a dirt bike or electric bike.

I believe that if I had to be stranded for a few days, that would be the best spot. So blessed that someone stopped by and jumped your batteries. Looking foreward to the rest of your journey. Stay safe and God bless!

You should carry a NOCO Jump starter, small but powerful doesn’t take up room but able to jump you off so you won’t be stranded.

    @ceetee2021 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

You should get a Jump Starter for your truck. You don't need another vehicle to jump you. They are small light weight and charge with USB. Mine holds a charge a very long time if unused. I have Ford E 350, it's my safety net when the unexpected happens. I've never had to use for my rig but I've used it on other folks. Thanks for the travels ✌☮

Hey guys, been watching you for quite a few years. What a life you’ve created. I have a diesel 3500 Dodge with a 1181 Lance truck camper. The battery died in a campground. I had to have someone come and jumpstart me.
After doing some research, I found an NOCO 70. It jumpstarts the big diesel engines. Amazon sells them for $199 and the case for $29. I just check the charge on them about every three months. Still vertical at 78 years old.

@@waynejackson3707 I bought the same NOCO GB70 model after trying and returning the lower power and cheaper ones from Costco. I had a faulty battery die on me so rapidly one weekend in Banff that I needed to boost it each time I wanted to start it even after driving for three hours. The NOCO had enough charge to start it three times without recharging it. I have a DODGE Pleasureway. I Don’t leave home without the NOCO and my tire inflator! Peace of mind!

Consider the 12v wiring for your new Water Pump and Filter should be drawing from your Lithium House Bank and not your chassis start battery. Also your exterior coach marker lights looked like they were on and those would draw down the starter battery. Love your stories and travels!! All the best.

After your battery problems on this episode, I just bought a battery jump start pack for our 6.7. Haven't had any problems, but our batteries are original and haven't been replaced. Like you we camp very remote.

Pete, please, consider a dual AGM (Odyssey) battery system. I run a Genesis brand dual battery circuitry.
If you opt for an AGM battery, be sure to have a means to adjust the alternator output to 14.5-14.8 volts DC.
I replaced the charging circuit fuse with a 1 ohm diode in turn, allowing my charging system to operate at 14.8 volts maximum.
All without any issues since the install. I has a professional install for the dual battery system.
Given AGM batteries operate there. Most systems operate around 13.8 volts. Which will shorten an AGM battery life. Cheers, Mate.

Morning Carol and Peter..... He have a F250 diesel and purchased a NOCO Boost PRO. We actually used it twice, first was with the truck, I was having problems with start batteries and used the NOCO to jump start the truck. The second time was with our toy hauler trailer, We were at a campground and when we were packing up to head home, I found that the trailers battery charger failed and the batteries ran down. Actually ran down to the pint where I could not bring in the electric awning or use the electric tongue jack to raise the front end up to attach the trailer to the truck. Again I just connected the NOCO to the camper batteries which allowed me to bring in the awning and operate the tongue jack. I just store the NOCO under the rear seats storage area and about every six months bring it in for a quick top off charge, So twice the NOCO saved us.... Have a great day and keep those videos coming. Jeff

Loved the beaches better than Washington, but that has changed since I took my wife to Seaside and the beach had so much garbage and broken glass in the sand, it was a big disappointment how it changed in 30+ years, now we don't mind going to Ocean Shores or Copalis beach.

I cracked up at the sudden stop of the music during Carol's fishing scene! 😂 If you had to learn a lesson in battery essentials, you sure were in the perfect place for it! Pete, couldn’t you have a cable run from your solar system up to your truck battery to charge it? You could have a switch installed that would only be turned on if you needed it. I’m no mechanic but it seems to be something to explore. Also one of those inexpensive batteries that you keep charged and plug it into a 12 volt port in the cab to back-charge the battery. I’m sure you’ve thought about that by now!!!

I hope Pete’s foot is ok. I must talk to my doctor sometime. Your battery situation made me add my mains battery charger and an extension lead to my checklist so as a last resort I can charge the vehicle battery from the lithium via the inverter to at least get enough power into it to start the engine. I would love to test this at home but don’t feel like deliberately flattening the battery for the test, so I Murphy’s law says I will never leave the lights on in the garage again😊.

It is very likely that your truck has some form of alternator charging for your house batteries and there is also likely a pretty big cable running from your starter battery to your house batteries by way of some regulator or battery management system. I can't say its a 100% safe thing to do but in an emergency you could have very likely bypassed the BMS and made a connection from the house batteries to the starter batteries to start your rig. It would only be for a few seconds and could get you out of a pickle. You might talk with Rossmonster about a built in way to do that.
On the other hand, carrying a jumper pack that you can charge from the house batteries is definitely also an acceptable solution and probably safer and easier on the whole house electrical system than what I am talking about so maybe that is the better option.

Gotta say, seeing the dead battery footage was great. It isn’t all perfect scenery and easy living. Experienced overlanders can get a little lost, and you do realize you’re not in total control! Always learning eh? Great video!

    Hola, pareja.
    Saludos, cordiales.

A few ups, and a few downs. That is what life is about. You folks are Great at taking it as it comes. Is there a way to run a dedicated power line from the back where your Li batteries are up to the engine compartment? Make it so you either can flip a switch to direct power to your engine battery, or physically attach wires to the start battery so it could naturally charge over an hour or two. I'm not an electrician, so I don't know if this would work. The music drop as Carol was casting and then picking back up was fantastic; a good way to add levity after Peter's accident with the nail. I hope your foot is better!!

Agree, you should be okay from the nail wound, besides your aired it so you must be good. Also you got your daily dose of Fe for the week. Great camping sites, thanks for sharing. To raise the bar on your fly casting skills when there are obstructions behind you, try the roll cast technique.

Rossmonster indicates that they offer a jump-start function on the Baja that allows the camper to jump-start the chassis if that battery is depleted. I'd contact Luke and team to discuss the option as we have a similar capability on both our 4x4 RV and Jeep house bank. It surely is better than carrying more devices or overly complicating a solution that may already be easily leveraged.

  • @1sheinz

I cannot imagine that there is Not a battery interconnect on your camper. Or that you'd not have 20ft jumper cables so you could go from your house bank into vehicle. My family and i had an identical situation many years ago at a secluded barely used forest lake. We stayed late sun nite for dinner thinking we would maximize the last day of a 10 day trip. I went to leave and wha wha wha. There had been No one visit during our trip, and the next lake was 20 miles down a very rough forest road. Luckily we had brought my bike so i could ride with the kids(road bike) it was now dark and no flashlight for the trip thru bear and cougar countey. Racing like our lives depended on it i got to an overlook to see the one and only camper left , leaving the campsite. Adrenaline surged and just barely got to the road entrance before them. Rightly so they were scared and didnt want too drive off into the woods with me, the Johnson-Bently family murders were still fresh in everyone's minds. After Begging and pleading the husband said well you go ahead and we will follow you. Did i say it was all downhill to place? I was already beat, but my family were all alone and i Had too save us all. Eternally later we could see our campfire, the husband finaly said why dont you get in! Really we are 100 yrds away i will ride. We rolled into camp my wife balling and kid's scared , finaly saved. I said them I WILL NEVER HAVE A AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION again. Being able to push start without a working alternator or battery, or a working starter even can be life saving. This was before battery jumpstarters, that have only in the last 5 years. Even still manual is the way too go for remote and off road trips. CHEERS AND SAFE TRAVELS Steve h

OUCH! And you said you would be careful.............. I can't wait to see Carol catch some fish using her fly rod! She has gotten so good at using it no comment about snagging the tree because every fisherman does that, some more than others. It's better than snagging another fisherman! That water there is so crystal clear. I don't know if you crossed the Colorado River when you were in Yuma, Ariz,. but it is just muddy ugly looking water. You all always seem to find places with crystal clear water. May you all continue to have safe travels, wonderful adventures, beautiful scenery, God's blessing, protection, and providing your needs.

Check with Rossmonster regarding your Victron Energy lithium system as typically when these systems are installed on an RV there is typically an option to engage a switch that allows a “jump start” of the starter battery from the house batteries. If Rossmonster installed this relay it may be the quick fix you need or have it installed and you won't need to carry more stuff!!!
