    Update 2023: These are still the settings I would recommend changing when setting up a new Windows 10 PC. For your convenience, *Time Stamps* are included in the video description... Thanks for watching!

    Good common sense advice. Very helpful. I'm retired now from doing this for customers in my own business, and I've used Macs myself since forever, so when friends and family still ask me for help - currently with Windows 10 which I've had no reason to even look at otherwise - videos like this are invaluable to bring me quickly up to speed with where everything is now and anything new. My sincere thanks.

    Personally, I check all of my Settings every time there is a Windows update... my Settings always change themselves. I talked to Microsoft about this & they don't seem to care that it is annoyingly UN-user-friendly. Control Freaks!!!

    • @MoonShadeStuff
      @MoonShadeStuff 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Joe Johnson this is misleading. Ubuntu asks if users want to send error reports and usage statistics, you are asked during the installation process if you are ok with that (it's one checkbox, not convoluted settings that reset after an update like in Windows 10).
      If you do agree, it collects data such as general information about the hardware (so they see what people use it on, so they can develop drivers appropriately), time taken to finish the installation (so they can optimize this process), settings selected during the installation process and non-identifiable stuff like that. This is far from what Windows 10 does and you have very clearly given the option to disable this during the installation and in the settings.
      Manjaro has a toxic community? Well that's interesting, I always though they were noob friendly and want to establish themselves as arch for humans. Must be different personal experiences.
      The argument for MX Linux is that is has a "complete graphical user interface" - that's just 99% of distros, that's not something unique to MX Linux. If you ask me, I recommend going with Kubuntu, as it is the most used OS (Ubuntu) with the best GUI that looks more like Windows with its defaults but can be made to look however you want to if you want to customize it at some point or another. But Windows users will feel right at home here.

    • @rodrigoacosta9708
      @rodrigoacosta9708 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, at first I was confused the first time I noticed this issue... until I realized its not an issue no no no... Damned control-freaks...

    • @MoonShadeStuff
      @MoonShadeStuff 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Joe Johnson "It's not 99% of Linux distros that have a complete G.U.I. because if you have to use the command line and or enter commands that should of been filled in already it doesn't have a complete G.U.I."
      Then neither Windows, Linux or Mac have a "complete GUI" - try disabling the default apps that ship with W10 (but not with the N edition) without a command line. You don't really have to use CLIs with Ubuntu derivates for what you'd expect are the use cases of typical computer users. There is advanced stuff with any OS where you have to edit either the registry, system files or enter some commands into a terminal/PowerShell to achieve your goal.

    Most of these I already knew. However, I did learn some new and useful tips. I often disagree with peoples suggested settings. There were no suggestions here that I disagreed with. Most of his recommendations I already had set but did tweak a few I was not aware of. The biggest problem I have with windows 10 is the automatic update and reboot.
    I have a home control systems that is running under windows 10. Occasionally it doesn't restart correctly due to not being shutdown properly. There is nothing nice about coming home at night and the lights don't turn on like they are suppose to because the home control computer was restarted. Not so bad on other PC's but a major pain on the home control system. I have actually been thinking about switching it to Linux just to avoid that problem.

    These are some really nice basic settings that need to be changed. I agree with most of these. The one setting is about auto-loading programs after restart. Firstly, a user should make sure everything is shut down anyways upon a restart. However, I do like having my email auto-load if there was a restart, planned or otherwise.
    The biggest issue with this setting is that it's really "2" settings in one. 1) Auto sign-in to automatically "finish" setting up device. 2) Reopen apps after restart
    With #1, if this option is turned off and the system needs to do more than 1 restart or login to finish updates, it won't. So even if it restarts in the middle of night when you are sleeping, you could come back to a system that takes 30mins or longer to "finish" updates after you login.
    I wish MS would actually separate these two options

    Change the Advanced Update settings update channel to the business setting for 'feature updates' (aka 'this is where we use the public to bug test new versions). This will delay twice yearly version updates by at least a couple of months while all the bugs are ironed out. You can't do this in the home version sadly.
    Alternatively go back to Windows 7 for a quiet life and none of this crap- sadly you may be out of luck on some newer laptops with drivers though.

    phasing out control panel? you mean the way they phased out notepad? well, ok, i have a tip. years ago, i created a folder called "quick". in it i put my most often used shortcuts- including calculator, character map, command prompt, computer management, control panel, eventvwr, internet options, msconfig, notepad, regedit and wordpad. i copied that file to a disk.
    each time i get a new computer or a new windows setup, that is the first folder i copy to my desktop. i then make a toolbar folder for it on my taskbar.
    this way, no matter how windows tries to hide those files, i can still find them. they are right there on my taskbar when i need them. i have copied those files repeatedly to different disks to prevent corruption.

    Turn Windows Features on or off: Uncheck SMB1.0
    For Pro users: Check Windows Defender Application Guard. Then do extra safe browsing with Edge by select Application Guard Window.

      You just told people to actually USE Edge...stop giving advice.

    • @AdamsTaiwan
      @AdamsTaiwan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@r13hd22 Sure, are you going to run any other browser in a VM for the extra security?
      For me the browser wars are over. I use browsers like I use Apps. If an app has a feature I use it for that feature. I use Chrome for most of my browsing and work. I used Firefox to view the CSS grid outline when debugging a webpage. I will use Edge when I need extra secure browsing and having it read websites out loud with mixed with Chinese and English at 1.5 speed.

    • @r13hd22
      @r13hd22 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chrome? Why would anyone ever use that memory hog. Edge is as secure as IE was, as in not...and im not surprised that you would use Edge for a thing that has been available long before Edge even existed. TTS software is not new and there are plenty of free options...MSFT has made billions off of the lazy and uninformed.

    • @AdamsTaiwan
      @AdamsTaiwan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@r13hd22 Again, I use the browser for the feature, I don't care about it's other problems. Chrome is first to allow me to install PWAs in windows from the browser.
      So you saw the word Edge and stopped there? Edge in itself may not be more secure, but what I said was to run Edge then select Application Guard Window. This runs the browser in an environment much like a VM (but not as large and slow), which means that even if the a hacker got thru it wouldn't matter because they can't get thru to windows. To get the same kind of security with another browser, you'd have to run it in a VM.

      Cannot figure out for the life of me why you brought up running a browser in a VM for "security" and now you are making excuses for using a browser that is weak on security just because of "features"...also, running a browser in a VM is no where near as secure as you think lol. VM itself is old and MSFTs VM software is one of the worst.

    I agree with turning "off" downloading from other PCs but I leave it on and allow the updates to only optimize from my local network. This is safe enough for me and as I have multiple computers on the same domain it seems redundant to download the same updates over and over again.

      @50PullUps 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly. Downloads are much *much* faster from one PC to another on your LAN. This setting should be kept on.

    I go into my control panel and select power settings and choose edit power plan. I edit it to the "high-performance" mode it uses a lot of power but my pc is plugged in all the time. in some pc's there is an ultimate-performance mode which uses a HUGE amount of power my PC doesn't have that because my pc is windows 10 enterprise I think the "ultimate-performance" mode is available on Windows 10 Pro edition.this is a very good setting you should change it now.

    new tip=In the search box on the taskbar, type settings, then choose it from the list of results. Select System > Storage > This PC and then scroll down the list and choose Temporary files. Under Remove temporary files, select the Previous version of Windows check box and then choose Remove files.
