Police in the south used firehouses on them back then. Also, our government forced tens of thousands to go die in an unjust war. Yeah, the 60's were awesome.

I grew up in New York City and when we were kids we would take the ferry to Staten Island we cut out of school near my brother, it was an adventure as a young kid, and every time I cross I would think of Gerry and the Pacemakers, because when we were kids these people were singing songs to us that was just so positive and inspiring, when we were growing up we listen to everybody's music we didn't restrict ourselves and Gerry and the Pacemakers the song that they did Ferry cross the mersey oh, that really is the most incredible song that lasts with you for the rest of your life ride the Staten Island Ferry and play Gerry and the Pacemakers it was a while ago but we had some good qualities because we didn't isolate herself and one type of music we yearned and we heard the British came to New York City with the Beatles all this stuff this was excitement as a teenager even young kids oh, but this is a song and it will last with me for the rest of my life

Great comment Jim and it's so true and I love all of those artists.
I would just like to add one, Roy
      Orbison.
I was out on a date with the sister of my friends girl friend. My friend drove about 15 miles to their house and then we separated.
Later my friend picked me up in his car and told me that his girl friend told him, that she was dating his brother and she didn't want to see him anymore.
We got on the road and there was a freezing rain storm and the roads were very slippery.
Then Roy Orbison came on the radio singing the classic song
ITS OVER and with my friend driving 50mph on frozen Michigan roads, because he was heart broken, I thought that it really was OVER ! luckily we made it home only spinning out a couple of times, but not hitting anything.
I will always remember THAT NIGHT and THAT SONG.
I'm 74 now and still remember all
      those good songs, but Especially

I once heard Paul McCartney say he wished he had written that song. I understand why. The lyrics speak about accepting and loving one's life, and loving one's neighbor. But it does so in an understated way, which I believe makes it even more powerful. At the end where Gerry does the final, "Here I'll stay," the instrumental ending (with the great George Martin producing) is music that makes you visually think of a ship crossing the Mersey, doing what it is intended to do, and Gerry being at peace with his life. Since we all desire that, I think that's one reason the song continues to resonate so deeply.

Certainly one of the most beautiful songs of the entire British Invasion! So is "I'll Be There" too, which Bobby Darin's original doesn't even touch. A great time to be alive-- RIP Gerry and thanks for contributing to the soundtrack of my life!

@@larryhillman3813 I haven't visited for 24 years now, and all things change. But the character of the people is most likely much the same, One of the factors that might impact things is the long war on pubs by British governments. Scousrers always loved their pubs which were (are?) places of social exchange, humor and wqorking class solidarity. I hope that's still in place. Wiching you a beautiful Christmas and prosaperous New Year buddy.

I used to regularly go to a night club on a Friday night, the Mersey View in Frodsham, Cheshire UK. I turned up one night in the 80's, and without any advertising or fanfare, Gerry took the stage and sang 'Ferry cross the Mersey', and 'You'll never walk alone'. It was such a great surprise for everyone, and a night I'll always remember. What a guy, RIP Gerry.

When I first heard this song as a teenager in the 60's, I really didn't understand its meaning. I just loved the melody and that unique Mersey sound. Later, as I got older and wiser, I began to concentrate more on the lyrics, and then, and only then, did I realize it's not the typical boy-girl love ballad, but rather a young man's confession of sentimentality towards his place of origin. It is a sort of recognition that the safety and camaraderie afforded by one's homeland, forms a special bond that can never be broken.

I was a teenager in Hong Kong when I first heard it in the 60s.
The quality of his voice is the same in singing as in talking. So, his ( Gerry? ) voice is a NATURAL. There's a little magnetic or metallic quality in it.
