One more mod I would recommend is removing the rubber nose piece from the face gasket because without it I could literally see my feet through the huge gap. If you decide to do this be very careful when peeling of the nose piece. It's held on with double sided tape which is fairly strong so go slow while being mindful not to stretch or tear the rubber but with some patience it will come off with the glue mostly intact and you can stick it right into the nose recess on the G2 headset. Doing this solved 90% of my light leak issues. I also use the Studio Form VR head strap and rear counter weight. My G2 now looks and feels like a proper high quality VR headset with improved fov! 👍

I'm confused. Your horizontal FOV measurement of the Reverb G2 was 98 degrees, and now after the mod is 100 degrees. How can two degrees be that drastic?
For my head shape, it is not a drastic change because my head shape already works with the original gasket really well. But some people only get like 90° because they cannot get their heads into the original gascet, so with this mod, they can get much more FOV!
Sebastian I'm lost as to what you mean by "edge to edge clarity". On my G2 the sweet spot is very very small, the spot in the center where it is most clear and focused. If I move my eyes around off of the center everything becomes increasingly less clear. Are you saying that you don't have that? If I keep my eyes always in the center, sure it looks pretty clear... but only if my eyes stay fixed in the center and only my head moves. Definitely not as clear as my Index was. The resolution is a huge step up, but I'm not able to say that about the clarity. Thanks!!
Hi :) I had the same issue, re install steam vr and mra. After that make sure the back headstrap the bottom plastic part is over the back of your head where the little bone is that sticks out just a bit. This help a lot for me as the headset was not on correctly otherwise. Tighten straps and it should be much better. Hope this helps
Thanks for this, I've just got my Reverb G2 (from a friend) supplied with an FOV mod and now i know how to install it while still being able to use the original face gasket (for my kids).
I have the G2 since 2 days and had to use Odyssey+ VRCover, because this facial cover from G2 is too narrow on sides and presses on my temples causing discomfort. IPD 67-68mm and normal not too wide face....luckily I kept one of my VRCovers from Odyssey+. I attached them just like you did. VRCover for Odyssey+ is not ideal. It is leather and causes sweating, plus it is way too thick on sides. At this point it is the best and only solution. Another issue with VRCover solution for Odyssey+ is strong light leak around cable plug and strap area in front, but this is HPs fault. That cable plug should not have been in front. Bad design by HP. They wanted to make G2 smooth and beautiful without plugs on side, but made things worse for mods and comfort. I used a self-adhesive black foam to try to isolate these light leaking places and it works to some extent, but it is a partisan solution and I don't like it after paying 700 EUR for G2. Odyssey+ cover because of cable plug placement is separated from the body of G2 and it causes problem with lenses/focus/sharpness/light leaks. I think I will try to make it better. I might find a proper upholstery foam to sink cable plug in that foam and make equal flat surface for face. Also, there are some 3D print G2 covers made by G2 users and I might try out to print one of these: www.thingiverse.com/thing:4673045 . I might add soon a short video showing VRCover on my G2.
@@kar6857 If you use SteamVR with the G1 at 100% supersampling then you have to change SS to 50% with the G2. This is a bug - blame it on G1 or G2, as you like. But blame HP for sure ;)

awesome timing buddy, just got my shipping confirmation for my g2 headset, should get it very soon!!!!! will definitely be doing this idea as well. I appreciate your videos and channel by the way :)
Extremely easy to apply and definitely looks better. Comfortable even with my eyes so close to the lenses. Just adjust the nose area to block out light
Added a piece of blue camp foam for the nose section, and added some extra velcro on the left and right of the display cable. Just a tiny one on the right (so it doesn't cover the magnet) and a big thic one on the left, covering the hole because who cares. Nothing uses that hole. With these two it eliminated almost all light leak. (which could probably just get covered by putting a small section of the loop side velcro under the display wire.
The Samsung Odyssey foam covers will be out of stock until at least February! I am still not happy that we have to "Fankenfov Mod" this thing, but I guess we have no choice if we want the larger sweet spot. Thank you HP for giving us such a SMALL sweet spot. :( I still cannot believe just how small it is. It is such a shame because the graphics do look great in the 15% of the lenses in the sweet spot.
i sold my G2 few days ago because face gasket on G2 is narrow for my wide face so it end up very small fov but now im watching this and im very pissed off because i just sold it. it sucks now i have to preorder again for January or Febuary delivery. i know why some youtubers said fov is terrible because they probably have big wide face cheek like me. im going for the velour leather version
Not really, for the most part its mainly Eyestrain, some may develope mysopia, but if they did, they could've got it from just reading books. Eyestrain generally happens because we blink less when exposed to a screen and should usually be back to normal within hours of break. Mainly if you don't have an underlying sight or focus problem, you should be fine, although knowing if you have it or not is another challenge in itself. But from a trial from Moorfields eye hospital, they did a survey on participants who used VR against those who hadn't, seemingly it showed to improve your sight/focus. TLDR: You should be fine unless you have an underlying sight/focus problem that could be intensified by constant use and ignoring eyestrain symptoms. If you feel sore on eyes or muscles while using it, take a break. One study from Moorfields stated it could improve your sight/focus.
I tried doing this. If you look in your original Vive box it comes with an extra narrow face mask with Velcro on the back. It kind of worked on the G2 but it left a hole on the bottom of your nose, I also felt like I was too close to the G2 screen and it was causing some light artifacts and I was seeing the edge of the screen too much.
Great stuff as usual! I was already looking for a thinner Vr cover to fit on mine. This is perfect timing as usual. Now we just need a mod to cover the headphones to direct the sound better to our ears. :)
What about HP reverb G1? Though, just by pushing the headset closer to my head I can see the edges of the screen(s) so doesn't seem like it would work for G1. Not sure how G2 is different, but those visible edges are breaking the immersion so I have to make sure my G1 is not "pushed" to my face
Found some samsung odyssey + covers on amazon that are 15mm thick ( 9mm slimmer that standard covers). I'm hoping these will get my face even closer. Only £9.99, worth a punt. The brand was AMVR if anyone intrested.
I think I'll just go with contact lenses also I see the argument of people trashing again has popped up all I can say about having my g2 is I actually feel more present and a greater feeling of height and width and depth. I e I was flying the 747 in X-Plane and for the first time really felt far away from the ground while sitting in the cockpit it was a cool feeling
@@mixedrealityTV I think that would depend on the prescription of the adaptors Sebastian. I have a G1 2nd gen and bought lens adaptors. Without the adaptors my eyes are clear of the lenses but with the adaptors my eyelashes brush the adaptors so I have to loosen the head strap way off so lose some FOV. I would suggest to Smurf that he tries the adaptors first before trying this mod.
I was actually taking the extra thick one from my O+ and putting it on there for fit just to see. A little velcro and it was like factory fit. Unfortunately it was not very comfortable.
Nice mod. Instead of sticking the Velcro to the headset, did you try using small Velcro strips to stick little metal washers or magnets to the face mask?
I prefer the antimicrobial cloth vs pleather or valuer on my face and Im sad that the aftermarket doesnt make anything other than valuer and pleather. The material made by Valve is the most comfortable face gasket material on the market. Especially for some one who has regularly spent 16 hours at a time in VR. Good mod tho. I have to wonder if you can just buy an extra stock magnetic face gasket and just cut the plastic with a Dremel at the corner and just have a flat stock face gasket you can Velcro on.
I'm confused. This video says that this mod drastically improves FOV in the Reverb G2. 114 degrees vertical and 100 degrees horizontal with this mod. In your other video (th-cam.com/video/9dzW3t6NVmw/w-d-xo.html) titled FOV comparison - HP reverb G2 vs Rift S vs Index etc.... the Reverb G2 Vatical is 114 degrees and the horizontal is 98 degrees. How is this FrankenFOV mod video demonstrating Drastic improvements?? The vertical FOV is the same and the horizontal fov is only improved by 2 degrees. Is 2 degrees considered "drastic Improvement"? What am I missing?
This is what I was wondering about. I don't have clear vision all the way, just in the dead center of the lens. And I also notice that I have to readjust the IPD whenever I look in the distance or when I look close by. Hopeful this will fix that problem as well.
Perfect! I haven't received my G2 yet but there is a definite risk it might not fit that well, which has been a major worry for me. Seems like this takes care of that!
Hey, thanks for the video. Did you use that same tool to measure the fov with the standard gasket? So that the FrankenFov numbers are properly comparable (rather than FrankenFov vs the G2’s spec sheet).
Test results unclear. Did he say it only improves from 98 (stock) to 100 (modded) degrees hFOV? I mean, that's better than nothing, but not by much.....
@Jeremy Zarfos yes but compared to his old video with G2's FOV, its only better by 2 degrees and nothing better vertically, which also confuses me a little
The rendering of the image is still the same, this mod only brings the eyes closer to the lenses, thus creating the "illusion" of more FOV. For most people this is good enough though.
@@thomastakahashi93 Thank you, Captain Obvious. Of course it's clear he's not modding / testing rendered FOV with this hardware and that app, just visible FOV. And no, that's not an "illusion", it's just the metric that he's comparing before and after. If he sees more FOV post-mod, then that improvement is real for him. YMMV. Also, there is no practical way for a user to mod the rendered FOV, and no reason to do so as long as the visible FOV is the limiting factor (which it often is for many people).
Hi Darryl, I said it in the video. I already achieve a good FOV in the device. But others are not as lucky with different headshapes, not getting into the face gasket as well as I do. So for them, it will be a big improvement to get to this kind of FOV. But even for me, there was a noticeable improvement.
Really franken interesting. I gotta say, if my kids came up with something to do with my headset involving glue and scissors it might not turn out as well.
Great vid Sebastian. Could you make a video comparing the tightness of the G2 vs the Rift S, Quest 2, and Index? What I mean is the diameter of the head strap fully tightened. I have a small head and I'm worried about the G2 being too big.
Great video SEB! 👍 Tell me this version is better for the FOV than the v10 version of the HP reverb G2 face gasket mod. ? Which one has the widest field of view ?
What about the nose shield and light leakage with this mod, as this is attached to the face gasket. Also, if wearing VR Lenses wouldn't they become too close with this mod? Just a couple of questions that stand out from my own personal perspective before buying the Samsung face cover. Please let me know. Thank you.
@@JohnJones-yk5qk well... I did not go back to the original cover. There is a small light leak around the nose but I like it because I can see the keyboard when I need it. The FOV is slightly improved. Very comfortable. Overall I think that its worth the try. Aside from a few bucks there is nothing to lose if you don't like it.
@@mixedrealityTV FYI.. HP just sent out an email about pre-orders. Pre-orders before Oct 25th will get them before year end. After Oct 25th in January 2021.
I am confused. How does this mod allow you to see more? Doesn't it simply eliminate more out of the binocular effect, by bringing the whole image closer to your eyes? Same number of pixels , just closer. Not to be confused with Wider FOV which is something dependant on lenses and screen(s) size and is different for DK1, Index, Pimax completely. By no means "drastically improve the FOV of your Reverb G2 and get it closer to Index levels".
@@mixedrealityTV nah i'm not planning sharing the device, just wondering if it's gonna be better velour when u play some "cardio" games like beat saber or boxing and you start sweating, dunno which would be more comfortable. I wonder if the Valve Index leather foam made by VR Cover would work the same way on G2? Thinking about the size difference between the Index and Odyssey covers? I’ve got the Index and the leather foams, but still waiting for my G2 to arrive from (surprise, surprise) Bestware.
I get really bad edge to edge clarity - if I look even 30° to the side it suddenly looks if someone's spread vaseline on the lenses. Definitely going to move my eyes closer to the screen.
I notice you tend to use the g2 controllers over the index. Is the tracking really doing that well on the g2 or is it a just hassle to use the index ones with the g2?
@@mixedrealityTV No worries I have watched all your vids about this. I just watch many videos and as you know some have different experiences. I am so excited for mine I already have all my extras ordered like my batteries and odyssey cover now.

I’ve got an IPD of about 68-69 and due to the single screen of the Q2 if I push on the headset to get it closer it just shows more of the screen edges... it all depends on your IPD I think.

For my head shape, it is not a drastic change because my head shape already works with the original gasket really well. But some people only get like 90° because they cannot get their heads into the original gascet, so with this mod, they can get much more FOV!
@@mixedrealityTV Oh I see. Thanks for the explanation. I heard you say it in the video but this clarifies it.
@@mixedrealityTV So this is for bigger heads?
@@eflaaten This is for heads that do not fit the original gasket so well, yes, like bigger heads.
@Davin S Even then it can't be more than 1-2 degrees more.
Maybe if I had received my pre-order I'd give this a go.....still waiting though!
You can also use one layer of sponge neoprene and HTC Vive Face foam you can get for cheap on Amazon. I've described it in one of my videos.
Which thickness of the HTC Vive Face Foam? 12mm or the 6mm. The mod in this video is 24mm thick.
Neat! Ordered!
I'm all about FOV, so this is great, even if it's only a small improvement with a medium sized head.
What software are you using to test your FOV calibration? Thanks for all the good work.
I have been wondering the same thing
Any luck
FYI I was bummed with small sweet spt and edge to edge clarity, I was running Steam VR at 50%, and this was main culprit
How do you mean at 50%?
@@kar6857
If you use SteamVR with the G1 at 100% supersampling then you have to change SS to 50% with the G2. This is a bug - blame it on G1 or G2, as you like. But blame HP for sure ;)
@@kar6857 steam vr sets render resolution at 100 percent, this is above the resolution of the headset, it does this to compensate for distortion, which also makes the sweet spot better and drop off in res as you look away from the sweet spot less pronounced
Still waiting for my G2, ordered in the 1st week of July from Bestware :(
Got mine. Not happy at all with the original cover. Big issue.
I too had pre-ordered from bestware in july, I was tired of waiting, I canceled and ordered from HP France 4 days ago, and the package is being prepared (in 10 days it was received by others)
@@squayssan5352 mines actually arriving today :D
@@CephDigital I'm happy for you ! I don't know where you live, I had to pre-order on July 26, I had paid 616 euros with delivery.
with my new order from HP France and with promotion I paid 558 euros, and for the warranty it's better for me.
have fun with it :)
I like how you are gesturing with your pistol in that video. :)
awesome timing buddy, just got my shipping confirmation for my g2 headset, should get it very soon!!!!! will definitely be doing this idea as well. I appreciate your videos and channel by the way :)
Thank you!
My face plate was too narrow, I used the heat gun on my smd rework station to gently heat and widen the sides and replaced the foam with some softer.
smart idea
Just a technical/medical question: Isn’t bad for the eyes being even closer?
No, why would it be? Your eyes are focused in the distance, it's not like the short focus of staring at a phone near your face.
Very straightforward mod. The FOV is definitely better AND the headset is far more comfortable. Thanks!
Welcome!
wow... 150^ diagonal with a very cheap mod!
so what else from a G2 headset?
good job mr. A!
Did it work ? VR cover is out of stock so that's interesting !
Thanks! I just ordered the O+ VR Cover, but I’m going to wait to see if your cable plug breaks before I try it :) The plug looks really fragile.
@@ji3200
Out of stock :( :(
Did the MOD work when wearing glasses or do they get too close to the lens
They would get too close to the lenses. If you wear glasses, I would go for lens adapters. That will work then!
3d printed gasket with a 22mm pad will make it comfortable with glasses
@@EverythingBattletech thank you but I think I'll go with contact lenses 🙂
Yeah I replaced that the first week on my O+ that thing was horrible. I bought this cover and never went back.
Great info as usual but you don't mention light bleed as there seems to be no nose guard.
Pssst... next mod is WIP for sure. Just wait that everybody has ordered the cover.
Been looking for some replacement covers for my new Reverb G2, got it this week.
Thanks for the tip, ordered some.
Whats the outcome?
Great idea, ordered my FRANKENFOV VR Cover now :-)
Looking forward to test it out.
i did the same but it needs to be velour for me cause i dont like the fake leather feeling
Is there any light bleed at the nose?
The ear positions seem to be where they are suppose to be also. So I am going to use my O+ face cover and head strap, lol.
I noticed that going this route, there is no nose guard to keep light from coming in. How is the level of light that bleeds in?
It is better in the original face gasket, but it is not as bad as for example with the Quest 2.
You can bend the gasket so there'll be ~0 room light coming in, it's fine.
Can you put a link to those scissors you used? Great stuff as always. 👍
Hey, thanks for the video. Did you use that same tool to measure the fov with the standard gasket? So that the FrankenFov numbers are properly comparable (rather than FrankenFov vs the G2’s spec sheet).
Purchased! Thank you Sebastian!
@Jeremy Zarfos So now with this mod, those people would get 72 degrees instead of 70.
It's better but not to the level of Index ,10° in VR make a big difference ! Thx for the test.
You are welcome.
The velour is for the Odyssey(non plus) though? Anyone tried it?
I was waiting for a simple, no 3 printing mod like this! Thanks Sebastian. I ordered these VR covers.
Great, you will enjoy this!
Whats the result? Has it worked well for you?
Really franken interesting. I gotta say, if my kids came up with something to do with my headset involving glue and scissors it might not turn out as well.
I sent a short email to VR cover about the need for an option for the Reverb G2. Please write to them so they see that it would be worth it for them.
I wonder, would this work with VR Prescription lenses? Or, is it too close? Will my eyes hit the lenses?
What about the nose shield and light leakage with this mod, as this is attached to the face gasket. Also, if wearing VR Lenses wouldn't they become too close with this mod? Just a couple of questions that stand out from my own personal perspective before buying the Samsung face cover. Please let me know. Thank you.
Samsung odyssey plus cover is still available as of today sept 29 2021. Will be trying this mod tonight!
Thanks!
Did you ever try this? Im wondering is this better than the HP one Vrcover sells ?
@@JohnJones-yk5qk well... I did not go back to the original cover. There is a small light leak around the nose but I like it because I can see the keyboard when I need it.
The FOV is slightly improved.
Very comfortable.
Overall I think that its worth the try. Aside from a few bucks there is nothing to lose if you don't like it.
Thank you for showing this. Looks like a simple way to get more FOV. Question though. Can you still wear glasses under it or even the inserts?
The inserts will work!

Hi guys, anyone knows where we can buy this VRcover in Europe? Thanks
Good point. Time and money and customs for shipping from Thailand is insane.
Great idea, thank you! Can you please link to the Velcro tape you used? I found some online but don't know which type/size to get. Thanks.
Can we just use our stock odyssey+ foam and accomplish the same thing?
So for sweating is better the leather or the Velour cover? I think velour but not sure
leather is more hygienic if you share the device with others.
@@mixedrealityTV nah i'm not planning sharing the device, just wondering if it's gonna be better velour when u play some "cardio" games like beat saber or boxing and you start sweating, dunno which would be more comfortable. Although I think the leather with sweat will damage the cover in the long term (?)
Thanks MRTV, my face cover is shipped. :D
Awesome mod Sebastian.
Thanks!
nice job finding this mod. just curious, how did come up to name it "franken"fov?
I am the guy who first came up with the Franken Mods... (FrankenQuest...). So I thought just keep it!
I will try it out as soon as I get my G2.....hopefully soon
I wonder if the Valve Index leather foam made by VR Cover would work the same way on G2? Thinking about the size difference between the Index and Odyssey covers? I’ve got the Index and the leather foams, but still waiting for my G2 to arrive from (surprise, surprise) Bestware.
Is there a reason why HP release the face cover at the distance it is, is they could widen the fov for no cost why did they not do it?
Because they want to make sure glasses wearers can use it.
I get really bad edge to edge clarity - if I look even 30° to the side it suddenly looks if someone's spread vaseline on the lenses. Definitely going to move my eyes closer to the screen.
Another very useful idea/video - has made an amazing difference thanks.
So glad to hear that!
I notice you tend to use the g2 controllers over the index. Is the tracking really doing that well on the g2 or is it a just hassle to use the index ones with the g2?
They are totally fine, check out my videos about them!
@@mixedrealityTV No worries I have watched all your vids about this. I just watch many videos and as you know some have different experiences. I am so excited for mine I already have all my extras ordered like my batteries and odyssey cover now.
I might do this when i get prescription lens covers.
Hey man!
Does this only affect FOV or also sweet spot? Sorry if these are similar terms or if I understood poorly! I just want to make sure before I buy it. Because I am really looking forward to increase sweet spot, more than FOV!
THank yoU!
I first need a G2 to do the mod. Thanks Connection and HP.
I wonder if you can do something with the Quest 2 to get closer
I’ve got an IPD of about 68-69 and due to the single screen of the Q2 if I push on the headset to get it closer it just shows more of the screen edges... it all depends on your IPD I think.
OK so it looks like VR Cover makes a face gasket for the HP Reverb G2. Is the mod in this video still relevant?
Would love to know this alsp
Cool idea, what is the software called you used to check the FOV, can't see the link in the description?
