People can have lovely personalities and the kindest on earth but when you see someone tattooed up it totally takes away from sophistication and elegance. @@ali-jean People do use it in a snobby way, really often. But it's also used as a way to distinguish between the cultural characteristics of people who come from the "old guard" or "landed gentry"-type families, and who have a very exclusive social set, that only other old money people can be in...and people who made their money and don't come from those places. For example, the whole book the great gatsby is about how jay gatsby can't break through into the "old money" social stratus and marry Daisy, the woman with whom he's obsessed.

Tailoring is going to be my watch word I have gone from a size 26 to an 18 on carnivore. I have 60 more pounds to go and being able to now choose clothes rather than settling for what fits means that being tailored will make it all look better. Hoping to get started back soon and have a successful story like yours! All the best. ❤❤
Build a tier of tailors... the very best for evening wear. A mid level for hard to change pieces (for when you cannot avoid a side zipper), and then a lower level for things that dont need much adjusting, or aren't very difficult

I've always dressed like this, but not because I am trying to look like anything. I just appreciate quality fabrics, and my style is kind of boring and timeless. The bonus is that I still have a lot of clothing from 20+ years ago that I still wear. I absolutely love cashmere, so I buy 1 or 2 pieces every year or 2 on black friday. Quality clothing just feels better and fits better. Of course, every so often I will buy something trendy, but I won't spend much money on it because I know I'm only going to wear it a few times.
Same here.... My daughters all agreed while looking through a family photo album that they couldn't tell the decade I was in by my dress. I wore the same style decade after decade starting in high school
I'm not an old money person by any means, I go for classic timeless pieces that can last me a good couple of years or as we say here "battle horses". I work with people, I am the face of my job so even if I'm dead beat tired or feeling lazy, I must look all put together and neat. I'm picky with colours because not all of them fit my skin tone and undertone well. I do use the colour palette you suggested but with a few changes: I wear a darker and cooler shade than the classic beige, dark green and red. Whenever my spirits are low, I wear red and it's like an instant boost up.
Of course real money does not care and wears whatever they want. Plenty of women wear big statement pieces with plain clothes but the real confidence comes from wearing what you want and owning it. This and having impeccable manners😊
No, that's not true. Their peers are constantly judging them. The need to conform is very strong. You want to be seen as "above" certain things. "Old money" does not mean confident. Those are two different things.
While it's true OLD money wears what they want to. What she's saying is that OLD money WANTS to wear well made classics made of natural fabric that stand the test of time. She's talking about generational wealth, like the Kennedys or royal. Although the young do have a tendency to dabble in trends, albeit expensive trends. Those in the fashion industry industry might also sway to bolder pieces also.
If you buy whatever that make you fell happy then it's extremely Harmful for the environment . Polyester dresses are extremely unhealthy for this environment. This is reality. Polyester fabric are made with plastic . So people need to think about buying dress not just a small happiness. Disrespecting the environment is not a very happy thing for this world.
This video isn’t saying “this is what everyone should wear”…. It’s a video for those who want to dress elegantly- and there are things to avoid if you’re wanting to dress elegantly. There’s nothing wrong with learning elegance
I tend to wear clothes without patterns and prints except for some pieces with small checks or stripes. I do like to accessorize my solid-colored clothes with patterned scarfs with the same color palette. As for color, I wear lots of greys, whites, creams, and beiges, but I also like jewel tones. I avoid neons because they don't look good on me, but I think they look great on some women.
I pair my Walmart finds with Chico's or Ann Taylor and accessories from thrift stores. Sometimes wearing all Walmart and no one knows. The secret is confidence in your look and attitude. As an 81yo Latina, my wardrobe is classically timeless with items from 20 years ago.
You nail it! Synthetics are the death of style (and of the environment, too). I admit that I sometimes wear them but not as throw-away items but in classical and well-fitting pieces to last several seasons.
Bless your heart for not understanding that most of the world can only afford synthetics. You talk about the death of fashion when many people, even those with jobs, can't afford their bills!. Your world sounds like a nice place to visit
@@bellareid3488 I'm an European of rather low income and I can even afford cashmere sweaters. Of course I must look for bargains, and have to make smart choices and treat them well so I can wear them a long time. My oldest one is from 1996 and still alive and kicking😄
I have always followed these basic rules as my mom taught me from early on that "classics" and "tailored" looks were the best, and that buying "for the long run" was the best and smartest thing to do. She was from the NE, and despite my being a "California girl" from birth, I wasn't allowed to buy so many "fad" items that my girlfriends had in middle- and high-school, other than for some casual clothes. Drove me crazy that I couldn't have "the latest and greatest" in shoes and clothing styles, but in retrospect, I'm glad that I had "my own" sense of style. Mom's lessons have followed me all through life, and I was able to adapt no matter where I lived, be it in NYC, across The Pond, or visiting cousins in the Deep South. I never felt "out of place". Nor did I ever feel self-conscious at special events I've had to attend over the years. I find that having a "classic" wardrobe is even more important when one works in a male-dominated field, like Wall Street, when I often found myself being the only woman around a table of well-dressed men.
You forgot to mention No tattoos No piercings in nose, lip etc other than the ear (1 or 2 max) The nails !!!! No extremely long pointed nails as belonging to a witch !!! Short nails, maybe a few mm long with neutral colors and no prints or stuff glued onto them !
i love my long Pointy witch nails. In Nude. it's so nice to scare people away in puplic with them. because it Shows you do not have to Do the mundane Tasks . 😈😏
No tattoos is a rule I wouldn’t be caught dead following. For me I like to think of it as a symbol of strength, endurance, and resilience because apparently they are painful.
Loved the suggestions. I have been studying classic outfits for a while now and I know it's time to revamp my wardrobe. However, here in Ahmedabad, it's pretty difficult to find such quality clothing. Everything around me is in line with some sort of trend. But one piece a time, wherever I find it, will have to do for now. I loved the colours you showed - tan, beige, white, black and I would suggest browns too; especially the darker shaed go beautifully with white and beige. And also, finding a good tailor is key to the entire wardrobe. Hard to find these days.
I agree. Originality is key. Older women, even with tattoos (like them or not) are still making a statement of what they believe in, and that's the most important.
I love quality, but have little money for clothes. My first tip is to save up for things rather than repeatedly buy something that will 'do' for now. I have great luck (and a lot of fun!) shopping estate sales, vintage shops, and thrift stores--and no one knows how little I paid unless I choose to tell them! 😊 Just the other day, I got several compliments on my tall leather boots which are not only on their 5th year for me but supremely comfortable, and cost me $12 US at a local charity shop! I have an assortment of colorful silk scarves that were $1 each; I'm still learning 1,000 ways to wear them, thanks to videos online 😊
It is always better to buy quality because it is going to last longer than having to replace items all the time because they were poorly made. Of course when menopause hits, you have to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe thanks to weight gain.😜
I don't care what anyone says, I like prints and bright colors...and I get compliments... clothes should suit your personality (I'm not "boring")...Yet, I don't wear tight or tasteless clothing...
So exactly true… But “ old money woman attire “ can be somewhat “ BORING “, there is a difference in LOUD clothing attire and SUTLE TASTEFUL attire… For that tasteful classy look always go for a SUTLE ( If you are not sure what “ SUTLE “ means in fashion )… LOOK IT UP 💫. Class never goes out of style… Check out the movies from 1900- 2000. 1940 particularly, Those ladies ( and men ), really knew how to dress. On stage, off stage, everyday life, and the hugh majority was not wealthy . Good article, quite a few individuals really needed this ! Great job 👏😌👏
No skinny jeans or big big floppy ones. The classic gently broke in five pocket jean never goes out of style - paired with a chic linen white shirt, to die for. No big clunky athletic shoes. Instead, wear a pair of Keds or a leather loafer. These are my go-to for shopping on my day off.
Agree in theory about natural fabrics, but wool and cashmere have to be carefully stored in cedar cabinets or closets so it doesn't get moth-eaten. Both woolens and linen fabrics often require dry-cleaning. Dry cleaning can get expensive and it's an environmental hazard. I continue to hope that more blended fabrics - cotton, hemp, bamboo, and linen - will trickle down to the mid-priced retailers, but so far, not much joy in that respect. I have certainly seen wealthy women wearing chunky jewelry, but it's paired with clothing that makes it work well and looks very sophisticated. Being well-mannered and having good social skills goes a long way even if you can't afford to dress upscale or struggle with getting a tailored look.
We grew up near the best consignment shops on Long Island. Gently used cashmere sweaters ,a treat to find wool jackets ,Corderoy pants ,great boots and loafers ! A blouse selection for three seasons too. Trendy just didnt do it for us. Lucky to be size 8-10 it was easy and reasonable to buy clothes that would be in style for year not just months. Comfortable, natural fabrics, Understated clothes to live in. Mother frowned on showing too much skin. She was so right!. Not rich but thrifty and comfortably retired now. Love clothes! Dressi is on it!
Since I was little, clothes have always been my toys. That's how I play. Wanting to come across as "old money" or "classic", or "chic", is making others the center of our attention... It's making sure we come across to them in a certain way (or don't). I am French, and was raised with classic, flawless style. Booooring! Like is too short. Enjoy yourself. Play! 😊
@MadamoftheCatHouse I do too. Even as a French person.... The perfectly cut pair of jeans, the white button down, the impeccable classic blazer, the scarf and the sensible classic loafers. Blahhhhhh
On a minor note: my father got a car from a dealer and they put the dealer logo on the car. He said "take it off unless you are going to pay me for advertising for you". I was just a kid but I remember that and to this day, I despise "logo" clothing.
I love these tips. But I do love loud colors and prints. I love turquoise jewelry. I hate logo clothing. But I did love that little alligator on my chest in the eighties.
Denise, frankly, you sound like you're too good for these silly tips. You know what you like and you wear it. You don't care about conforming, you like to have fun and do what makes you happy. And you can still buy the alligator shirts! They're from the French brand Lacoste, and they're made from cotton, which is a great natural fabric not mentioned by this snobby narrator.
The best style for you is what makes you happy, comfortable and confident. Plenty of wealth doyens of style wear prints colours and chunky jewels. Key is quality in harmony
What does that alligator do for you? What are you trying to tell others... that we got suckered into 1980's over the top consumerism... that made shoppers poor & textile conglomerates wealthy. [Now we know better: If you have stock in the company instead of wearing the logo, you can be in a better place)
I agreed with everything except color. I could never live without the color red. Not in everything but a red trenchcoat or red pant or skirt suit. Love!
This style is definitely my preference - the emphasis is on the woman rather than what she is wearing. Staying away from fast fashion is also important for humanitarian and environmental reasons. Unfortunately, my body size has changed so much over the years that I can no longer wear any of the timeless pieces I have purchased over and over in multiple sizes. 😔. Having a timeless wardrobe really only works if you don’t have changes like my double-mastectomy, or fluctuating weight.
And Cindy Lauper and Iris Apfel and countless other wealthy creative brilliant women with their own unique style couldn't care less about these rules. 😂
My son calls me "Abercrombie old." I think is a compliment because i wear what i have worn for decades - not the clothes, but the lovely & comfortable.
Wear what makes you feel like you. Designer clothes don’t mean better. Following your rules and feeling good about yourself always works. Old money tips are for old money people but for us that are not in that 1%, be yourself and you’ll look radiant.
It's about never having food, living a life of someone else's money to pay so much to look well dressed. Most stores don't sell natural fabric clothing and most people can't afford to buy natural fabrics anymore. Synthetic fibres were promoted by the oil industry and took over the market and wool, cotton and linen got a bad wrap instead of being naturally the best for humans to wear. They breathe but Synthetics don't.
Not true: "most people can't afford to buy natural fabrics anymore." The day a person stops buying crap for the sake of buying buying buying, then that person is on the way to saving/investing It's about CHOOSING quality It's about wanting things that are well made, feel great on & are not made solely to fill a landfill. If you pay for any streaming service, or ever eat in a restaurant, or buy any food that is not on sale... then you already have the funds to buy QUALITY (not quantity). Bad clothing habits are something that any one can change... it's a CHOICE to not buy garbage, only to complain it's garbage.
Another thing that is not mentioned is old money, they watch thier weight. They dont fluctuate so buying quality stable pieces of clothing, that is timeless cause once tailored, they have to do so..
I'm retired and live in Florida now. I wear shorts and a tee shirt most days, and flip flops. I have a couple of nice outfits to wear to events, and a few to wear traveling. Thats all I need. I save so much money, and I'm very happy with my life. So, bottom line, who cares what wealthy women wear?
@GoddessBlessYou It was of interest, but it's comedic interest. I think it's funny that people put so much importance on what wealthy people wear in an attempt to impress others.
@GoddessBlessYou Of course it's about impressing other people. Isn't that the point of this video, to help people dress like "old money" so people won't think they're nouveau riche?
@@kathleenstoin671 That could be one reason, of course. Perhaps if you're clever enough, you could come up with three or four additional reasons why this might be of interest to someone.
I'm the poor version of wearing classic clothes. Can't afford the natural fabrics but always hated logos let alone loud ones. I love dressing up xx ❤😂 xx
@@joyceellis9722 I completely agree with this. I've gotten to where I can't stand the way cheap fabric feels, and it definitely doesn't wear the same. Quality clothing just hangs right. It looks tailored without needing to be tailored. It feels right against my skin and it moves right when I'm moving.
@@angelasims2759 I think you got that wrong. Particularly in the UK, you can never can cross class barriers. Even the current Princess of Wales knows that.
Malakies!!!! People wear what makes you feel good, happy and what Is affordable to you!!! A.I telling humans what to wear, please take a seat behind me!!!
Outside labels were invented as a segment for the population who can’t afford couture. When you are wearing labels on the outside, you are screaming that you’re too poor to afford the higher end couture version. Nothing screams mid like a walking billboard for a design designer.
TLDR version so you won't waste 10 minutes of your time. 1. no logo to flaunt 2. no overly trendy items 3. no cheap synthetic (polyester, acrylic) fabric 4. no loud colors or prints (not about commanding attention, it's about inspiring admiration) 5. no overly revealing clothing (less is more) 6. no flashy jewelry 7. no poorly fitting clothes 8. no overdone makeup or hair I also don't like the 'old money women' idea. Old money does not make someone elegant. Elegance comes out of within, authenticity sincerity, not something superficial. I see this video as a guide to express your inner elegance. One can dress elegantly as much as she wants (here all models are women), but if she doesn't have empathy, grace, humility, her elegant clothes are nothing but a shadow of snobby 'old money'.
When I hear the word "brand", I think of cattle getting branded and that's basically what they're doing -- showing their logo shows you belong to them.
When you invest in quality clothing and take proper care of it, it lasts a lifetime. You don't need a closet packed with clothes either, just a few well-chosen pieces. I wear wool socks all winter, and the best part is you can wear them more than once before washing. Don't try that with some cheap acrylic socks.
If confidence really comes "from within" as she says, it doesn't matter what you wear, as long as it is appropriate and comfortable. Buy something responsibly made (or vintage, even better) and you'll be confident knowing you are a person who cares about other people, not what class other people think you're in.
I think one thing to add to the list is: symmetry. While there's some natural asymmetrical things (you're not going to carry *two* handbags just to achieve 'symmetry') in general you don't tend to see much if any asymmetry in classic, "old money" styling. So the things I'm seeing in the other comments, like complaints about heavy piercings and tattoos, could just as easily fall under complaints of a lack of symmetry (very *very* few people even *try* to have perfectly symmetrical tattoos from one side to the other of the body.) Tattoos would also likely fall under "flashy makeup," too.

My mom used to say Classic attire never fades because it’s not a trend or a fad. If you wear jewelry, make sure you don’t overdo it. The whole point is understatement in fashion is better. And my mom was told she looked very regal.
Tailoring is going to be my watch word I have gone from a size 26 to an 18 on carnivore. I have 60 more pounds to go and being able to now choose clothes rather than settling for what fits means that being tailored will make it all look better. I love the tips to help me build a well put together look I can be proud of. Thank you,
Congratulations, and good for you! You will reach your goals. 😊
Congrats on your hard work! Keep it up, go, go, go!!! I believe in you! ❤
Congratulations!!! Very exciting!
Congratulations. I’m proud if your success. I love tailored simple clothing. Never a fan of trendy clothes. I’m short and curvy. So trendy clothes look ridiculous on me. I was on carnivore and was losing weight and feeling good. But with the last several months and a few surprise surgeries, money is tight and carnivore is more expensive.
Elegance and class are the keys
Its good for this temporary earth.Rather focus on Eternal things.Where will your soul go when you no more here? Nobody is promised tomorrow.Do you know Jesus Christ? He is coming soon,
I've always dressed like this, but not because I am trying to look like anything.
It’s not boring, it’s timeless
Same here.... My daughters all agreed while looking through a family photo album that they couldn't tell the decade I was in by my dress. I wore the same style decade after decade starting in high school
@@bluesageful Exactly!!
It’s also important to take good care of the clothes so that they last.
I am 65, follow most of these rules. I love to coordinate scarves and classic accessories. But my heart does go out to hot pink and animal print 😊
Of course real money does not care and wears whatever they want. Plenty of women wear big statement pieces with plain clothes but the real confidence comes from wearing what you want and owning it. This and having impeccable manners😊
Totally agree and well said!
Well said..and of course.. they can afford it😅@@bboggs1277
No, that's not true. Their peers are constantly judging them. The need to conform is very strong. You want to be seen as "above" certain things.
"Old money" does not mean confident. Those are two different things.
Wear what you want with class!!
Great video !!!! You made great points!!! Thank you!!!
Just wear whatever you feel happy in,and stop worrying about what other people think , Judge people by their attitude not by their appearance 👌

I have always loved dainty jewelry. At the same time, I do love some vintage costume jewelry and will wear it with a really plain outfit.
Lovely video, thank you. Absolutely true.
You nail it! Synthetics are the death of style (and of the environment, too). I admit that I sometimes wear them but not as throw-away items but in classical and well-fitting pieces to last several seasons.
In Ontario, Canada, l have a hard time finding natural fiber garments such as wool blended dress pants. Any suggestions?

@@bellareid3488 Cotton is a natural fabric, and is cheap, warm, long-lasting, and versatile.
Great points! Thank you so much for your video!
People need to stop buying clothes that wear out and fall apart!

I bought a red silk blouse, used. I have had it for years, wear it during the holidays each year. Still looks like new.
Don’t forget affordable 100% cotton! Also some skins suit jewel colours and look washed out by beige, so a pop of colour works well.
To each his own. Be yourself whatever that is. One does not need to follow certain ranks
I agree. Originality is key. Older women, even with tattoos (like them or not) are still making a statement of what they believe in, and that's the most important.

Well put together 👏 thank you!
I believe that one should use whatever one likes and can afford, obviously . It's difficult to choose quality when one is trying to make ends meet...
Just the other day, I got several compliments on my tall leather boots which are not only on their 5th year for me but supremely comfortable, and cost me $12 US at a local charity shop!
I worked in a boutique many years ago and whenever I hear of understated elegance it always remind me of one Designer and it's Ralph Lauren.

Class never goes out of style… Check out the movies from 1900- 2000. 1940 particularly, Those ladies ( and men ), really knew how to dress. On stage, off stage, everyday life, and the hugh majority was not wealthy .

No skinny jeans or big big floppy ones. The classic gently broke in five pocket jean never goes out of style - paired with a chic linen white shirt, to die for.
No big clunky athletic shoes. Instead, wear a pair of Keds or a leather loafer.

Good solid advice used on the right occasion.
Since I was little, clothes have always been my toys. That's how I play. Wanting to come across as "old money" or "classic", or "chic", is making others the center of our attention... It's making sure we come across to them in a certain way (or don't).

Not true: "most people can't afford to buy natural fabrics anymore." The day a person stops buying crap for the sake of buying buying buying, then that person is on the way to saving/investing
It's about CHOOSING quality
It's about wanting things that are well made, feel great on & are not made solely to fill a landfill.
If you pay for any streaming service, or ever eat in a restaurant, or buy any food that is not on sale... then you already have the funds to buy QUALITY (not quantity).
Bad clothing habits are something that any one can change... it's a CHOICE to not buy garbage, only to complain it's garbage.

True. ❤
It’s all about how it feels.
All those women shown were young, slim, and beautiful.
TLDR version so you won't waste 10 minutes of your time.
1. no logo to flaunt
2. no overly trendy items
3. no cheap synthetic (polyester, acrylic) fabric
4. no loud colors or prints (not about commanding attention, it's about inspiring admiration)
5. no overly revealing clothing (less is more)
6. no flashy jewelry
7. no poorly fitting clothes
8. no overdone makeup or hair
I also don't like the 'old money women' idea.
Buying logo clothes makes you pay someone to be a walking billboard. Hard pass.
Exactly!! If they want me to he a walking billboard, they glance give me the item, and then pay me to wear it.
When I hear the word "brand", I think of cattle getting branded and that's basically what they're doing -- showing their logo shows you belong to them.
@@janetplanet8678 That is precisely why people buy logo items... they want to belong to a group
Isn’t “I don’t care” old money?
Nice advice
When you invest in quality clothing and take proper care of it, it lasts a lifetime. You don't need a closet packed with clothes either, just a few well-chosen pieces. I wear wool socks all winter, and the best part is you can wear them more than once before washing. Don't try that with some cheap acrylic socks.
Not to mention they let your skin breath!
And those fabrics (wool, silk, organic cotton) aren’t as toxic. Good luck finding those natural, nontoxic, fibers.
