    SD-1 is a TS-9 with asymetrical clippnig and a bit more gain -- and a much friendlier price. Get it.

    • @stevenburvenich168
      @stevenburvenich168 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ^ this
      it's all very subtle, but the assymetry really brings it closer to a preamp tube harmonical spectrum. Do you hear it? Yes, but not that much in a gig in a shabby pub. It is a bit more responsive as well because of the (assymetry) difference in clipping treshold.

    Adding the SD1 to a Marshall is like adding gas to a fire. It takes it up a notch. The DS1, when set right, is awesome with Marshalls as well. There's a reason Satriani, Vai, and Doug Aldrich all used it for years. I recently saw a "That Pedal Show" where they played a DS1 through a Plexi half stack and the tone was simply stunning! They couldn't get over it. IMO, it was better than any boutique amp on the show to date.

      No reason to buy amps with douple overdrive chanels, you can use a straight amp and the SD1 takes you to
      the Brownsound. Even my tiny 5 watt Marshall amp sounds awsome with a SD1 Not to mention adding this
      baby to a none master volume Marshall, or Highwatt, Orange (th ones without OD and Masters) it takes
      you to where you want it. its a TONE monster all for $60

      Lol the point is to use it rather than just own it brother. That being said my over drives don't include an sd1 and never have. I use a treble booster/fuzz face dual pedal I built(sorta like an analog man Sunlion but reverse order) first in the chain for hi end boost or for Hendrix fuzz face clean tones next is a TS9 I've modded for extra bass boost/gain boost options which stock covers my mid boost, and next is a klon clone I built that covers my low end boost. With those three I can cover a ton of ground and that's not including my other 13 pedals in the signal chain out front an in the fx loop. With that said I'm probably gonna buy a second hand sd1 and if I like it(I think it will be a good boost for my 7 string with fishman moderns) build one from scratch so I can make it an ideal addition to my board. With that many pedals I really prefer each pedal built a certain way so it plays nicely with the pedals before an after it. Sometimes I get lucky and the stock configuration works though.

    And SD-1 has two qualities:
    1. It is all a tube screamer is, but with its assym circuitry it has more output, gain and touch responsivity
    2. It is an everlasting boss pedal which you can buy for 25 to 35 bucks second hand and still work with it for the next 20 years.
    and if you buy on with classic thru hole electronics, you can repair and swap components in no time. It is a Willys Jeep.
    The only major quality the tube screamer has is its colour. But it does not explain the 40 bucks extra.
    I've added switches and circuitry to swap between SD and TS clipping before, but i noticed i never really liked the TS setting ... So why bother?

    • @bushleague3472
      @bushleague3472 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To me the TS on its own has always sounded as if its just putting an overdrive tone overtop your clean signal, IMO the SD1 sounds like its actually overdriving the signal. Imo its a much more natural, amp like overdrive. These days when I play a TS it makes me think of the thin, grainy tones that Emo bands were somehow getting out of perfectly good amps in the early 2000's.

    Love my SD-1. I use it as a constant clean boost or slightly dirty boost with my Crate Blue Voodoo 60H. Really gives it a nice thick saturated tone and can also tame the shrill sizzly high end along with a focused set of tubes (Sovtek, Ruby High Gain and Tung Sol 12AX7s and EHX 6L6GCs). Can take on a sound reminiscent of a 5150 when dialed in right. Not exactly like, but can get some of that growl.

    So I'm playing through a fender hotrod (so not the EL34 type Marshall amp that you always hear pairs well with sd-1) and I already have a ts9. I thought I needed some fancy boutique for 2nd stage od so I've been kinda snubbing the sd-1. But I bought it the other day on a whim - its cheap enough to just try it out, i figured. And woah! am I impressed!😊 She got grunt! While the ts purrs, the sd snarls! Together, they cover so much tonal range. New convert here! No need for a klon/llama/OCD etc etc now.
    Although...(! that's the GAS gremlin talking now!)

    This video actually helped me in a studio context last night.
    I had a mix with a lead guitar track that was kinda harsh in the top end. The guitar had already been recorded through an amp and a cab into a mic and into the DAW by the client, so I couldn't change the tone. But I threw a plugin of this pedal onto the lead track, and it did the trick to sooth the harsh top end and provide a mid bump that lifted the solo out of the mix. It sounded fantastic! I ended up diming all the controls, and it just worked. Typically, I'd advise against diming the controls due to noise when the guitarist isn't playing, but in this case the guitar had already been recorded so that wasn't an issue. I cut out anything in the track that wasn't his solo, and that's like a manual noise gate.
    Gonna do a mix minute video on that at some point on my channel, and I'll reference this video for sure. If anyone's curious, I used the Plugin Alliance bx_yellowdrive

    Absolutely one of the best demos ever. Really captures just want this pedal can do, and why it's so popular. It's the right way to use it, to boost an amp that already has a bit of grit. They don't do much for a clean amp, and I like using them in front of the amp. I never liked distortion pedals in effects loops. I want distortion pedals to interact directly with the preamp, as a kind of EQ, to really help shape the tone in radically different ways. I always felt other effects sounded better through effects loops. But in general, I almost never use effects loops. I use a fuzzbox, usually a Boss Turbo Distortion or my WazaCraft SD-1. I love what the Waza mod does for this pedal, but it's still a great pedal without using the custom mode.

Most over drive boxes and distortion boxes are just straight up copies of the sd1, ts9, rat, big muff and tone bender circuits anyhow. When you get right down to it theres less than ten original dirt boxes everyone copies. If your into pedals just get stick with the classics and save yourself some money.

    The Boss SD-1 also sounds beautiful as a high gain boost in front of certain solid state amps as well. Because it doesn’t compress in the same way as a Tube Screamer, you’re able to get a lot more dynamic attack out of your playing on top of the added mids and adjustable treble, making it perfect for more modern styles of music like Djent.

    Dude, so correct on half of this. I've been chasing a better overdrive pedal for years, and I'm 1 for 10 on my search. (Jetter Gain Stage gold is only better pedal on my board). Yes, this is a pedal we should all have, especially since it's a better od than pedals three to five times the price, but I strongly differ with your use. 1) your demo shows why I chase other ods--the top of the mids and the highs are harsh on this pedal; bad on its own, but good in a mix if controlled w/ tone knob (2) the gain is excessive and noisy, but ez fix by dialing back below noon and crank the level (3) I really question use of this pedal straight to power amp in or fx in or in the loop for solo boost altho i could see it as in case of emergency, like your example, in which you play great to show off the special tone of this pedal . 4) Overdriving the already driven amp is a blast, but maybe doesnt sound as good as it feels....nice playing on those riffs tho...you sure nailed the Zach Wylde, and yeah, i think he uses this pedal into a Marshall....one more thing i've noticed is this pedal plays great with all kinds of different guitars with the high level and rolled off tone and drive....

    The only reason I could ever think of for people hating on the SD-1 is if they are running an especially clean rig where they really want to preserve high end detail - this pedal is notorious for its bypass noticeably rolling off some high end. sound-wise, it's like a more aggressive tubescreamer... find the tubescreamer too soft and rounded sounding for your needs?... get the SD-1 instead, it'll do what the tubescreamer does, only with a bit more grit around the edges.

    I just picked up a Waza SD-1w and love it. Works like a champ with a Recto, Yeti, Orange and Vox. Turns them all into very angry sounding amps (even the Vox!).

    • @LeonTodd

      It's so good with a Recto. Tames the flub and turns it into a tight metal machine.

      @@LeonTodd Amazing playing and tone man!!! How do you think the sd1 would pair with an Orange Rocker 30? I play in punk rock band, using Dirty channel volume at 12, and gain at about 2 or 3, and have always struggled for decent lead boost... (Rocker 30 has no loop) Cheers

    • @LeonTodd
      @LeonTodd  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@metomyoujane it should do the job nicely. Either that or a graphic eq would be a great choice to bump the mids

      @metomyoujane 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LeonTodd I used to have a boss EQ. Sold it stupidly.... It's the closest I've gotten to a good boost. Had a slight split second delay it kicking it on and it working though.... Anyway sounds like a standard sd1 is the go. Is yours new stock? Not an old 80's MIJ or anything? Thanks again mate

    Ok, soundman here. The SD-1 might not be as good a smooth overdrive/clean boost as a Klon; tone aficionados might not find it as good a blues-solo train as, let’s say, the original MJM London Fuzz (which totally worth the 225 bucks for 2 knobs, fight me, this thing is the best analog fuzz ever made, apart of the Analogman). It might not be as powerful as a Colorsound overdriver. It might not be as well known as the 808 or 909. It’s also not as versatile as a EQD Plume, not as hi-fi as a morning glory... a mojomojo might be a bit more dynamic... you get the point. *But it’s the most usefully versatile overdrive ever for classic rock and blues tones*. It’s the most well-rounded, no frills, smooth OD pedal I know off. If you have to buy only one OD pedal... get an SD1

    This pedal is relatively cheap, and has a lot of potential for mods or upgrades, to make it even more versatile, the true bypass mod, is great and eliminates all the components who damp the sound, after that is very clear, by mistake I disconnected a Drive wire and all of the sudden the pedal had an incredible distorted sound, it was amazing, but the Drive couldn't be adjusted, so, I soldered back and I regret it because I cannot figure out how to replicate this, I guess a bypassed potentiometer could do the magic

    This is an amazing pedal. Love the Boss SD-1 or SD-1w Super Overdrives. must have rock pedals. Zakk Wylde used it before MXR cloned it and it became the MXR Wylde ZW-44 Overdrive pedal. All 3 sound the same. Great Dirty Marshall Amp pedals. they sound so good. I like MXR brand but the Boss Sd-1 or Sd-1w Super Overdrives sound just like it.

    Overdrives are great pedals, sometimes better than distortion pedals. I have an FBM1 Fender Bassman Boss pedal, which simulates the original amplifier and I tell you it has the same quality as SD1 but with parametric equalizing. Anyway, boss overdrives are great. : )

    Love my early made in Japan sd1 ..i use it instead of tube driver .they are cheap and sound really good. Mxr classic overdrive is like a true bypass sd1 and ts in one package .it has an internal switch that changes the clipping .mxr doesn't tell u this but it really is in there.lol .Boss rocks
