I listened to a lot of demos of both these pedals and played both at GC. Both do different things VERY WELL so instead of choosing one over the other I bought them both and I'm happy I did because when they're stacked together they give you an amazing tone and separately they're unique enough to make each worthwhile to purchase and use on their own! I love that little bit of flubbiness of the SD-1.
Very nice. I would really have liked to hear both in a mix, and how they both clean up with guitar volume and picking attack but that wasn’t the scope of this, so still gave a good sense of the tonal differences.
Great demo and done with the right amp. I love both pedals. The Blues Driver has a generally smoother, creamier overdrive. It doesn't have the aggressive diode clipping like the SD-1. But both pedals can be used for hard rock and medal. It's just that the Blues Driver works better from a blues kind of tone.
My blues driver has been going strong for about 17-18 years. I'm still in the market for a gain pedal that's doesn't necessarily have that midrange push.
Yesterday I paired the Boss GT-1 with the SD-1, and they worked very well together! I kept the Level and Tone around 12 and put the Drive at 9. I use the JC-120 preamp model in the GT-1, and the SD-1 does a great job of pushing it - I was pleasantly surprised! Now I have to add the SD-1 to my board, haha! 🎸
what's interesting is through your rig the BD2 sounds more natural at noon, whereas with my practice rig at home it's the opposite. the bd2 is definitely more level and gain, but the gain sounds artificially fuzzy to me through a black face. that marshall as your base tone is nice! and yeah, i find the bd2 is good for kicking in and boosting drive channels and other drive pedals to another level or givn a nice round boost to a clean (gain is down and drive is up on the pedal) and the sd is better for a channel 2 approach with the gain up to taste--i use it like a "green pedal" and prefer the boss sound to the green one in most instances....the sd definitely cleans up nice with volume knob roll downs....
sd 1 gets a nice tight chug in front of the gain tone, whereas the bd really sings in front of the lead channel. When I see demos of things like the OD-200 and the ME-80 (which run through all the boss pedal sounds), the BD really stands out each time.
Have both of these and for quite a while they were next to each other on a large board. I tend to find the SD1 more usable across a wide range of sounds and the BD2 is more excitable if that makes senze, a little more brash but feels more powerful.
The segment at 4:33 displaying the blues driver with settings is different to when the camera is panned down to the pedal at 4:55, I dare say the pan down is obviously correct
What a nice comparison... I'm looking for that 80s Rock tone and a little fuzz for some of gilmours late 80s work... Plan to pair either of these with a mooer e-lady and an mxr carbon copy or TC flashback... So what would you recommend? I have money for either the BD2 or SD1
Well both sound absolutely amazing. Youboob is not allowing me to hear 'mid hump' difference, added bottom or add'l transp. My SD1 is amazing, and stacks amazing with DS-1 4a. I have tones way down and gain way down on DS-1. Works great with transp compression like ross (xotic sp), and high headroom boost of choice at end of chain before delay/reverb
Good comparison but a guitar with single coil pickups should've been included for a fuller picture. Also, the sounds they were made to produce are probably not what these pedals were primarily designed for, although, it proves their versatility! I have an SD-1 and a BD-2w and when playing a single coil Tele, I prefer the SD-1. Speaking as an "advanced beginner" :-) the SD-1 is just a lot more approachable. I was forever fiddling with the settings on the BD-2w but never was 100% happy. When I got the SD-1, everything just fell into place. It was all very simple and it was easy to dial in whatever sound I wanted. A pro might have a different take but for me, SD-1 all the way. With a Tele... ;-)
I had the sd1 for years until I bought my tube works amp which had a nice tube preamp so I no longer needed the pedal, however I did notice it sounds amazing with my Morley wah so I wish I had kept it for that. I tried the DS 1 and to be honest I prefer the super Overdrive for a distortion sound. I use to yse it with a small marshall for solos, mixedwith the marshall distortion
My brother uses a BD2 that he pushes with a TS9. It is one of the smoothest high gain lead tones I have heard. I would imagine that it would be similar stacking an SD1 into the BD2 as the SD1 is very screamerish.
BD-2 is good for faking a 2nd channel to a single channel amp where it doesn't take out your lows, where the SD-1 and its low cut/mid boost is good for solo boosting with the drive down and level up, With these 2 pedals and a TS-9 type pedal, your good to go.
@@frankscassi4960 The clipping is the difference: TS-9: Symmetrical clipping SD-1: Asymmetrical clipping TS-9 is smoother, (especially the 808 variants) better for single coils, where the DS-1 is more open and works better for humbuckers
@@sisoldi the difference between the two clipping is very subtle. You can put a switch on one of the two pedals to hear the difference and though present is not the most recognizeable difference. Also: when used as boosters (gain at zero) diodes aren't even clipping the signal, so even less difference
@@frankscassi4960 I've had pedals with the switches and when I've used a small board its what I've used. Actually the biggest difference is the SD-1 has more hi pass filtering than a true standard TS-9 variant, so its more open and a less rounded top end compared to the TS-9, whether the gain is on or not. I happen to like just a touch of gain with these, just at the point where you can tell its there, otherwise might as well use a Boss EQ pedal :)
la SD1 sert a booster une autre overdrive , c est comme ca qu elle est ultra efficace ; peut etre meme la meilleure ; elle n est pas faite pour etre utilisée seul , je la preferre a une tube screamer type TS9 .
The SD-1 is not the DS-1, both serve different purposes to the BD-2. The BD-2 is a decent option for faux low to medium gain at bedroom volumes, the SD-1 is a boost to push an amps distortion (like a Screamer), and the DS-1 is harsh distortion and a great Punk pedal.
I love boss but they have so many drive/metal pedals that sound more or less the same, I have the sd-1 but I’m sure I could have the bd sounding the same or very close. Extreme marketing.
Always a pleasant surprise to hear an Aussie accent on these videos. Great that my countrymen are putting out quality videos like this. Great job!

Two of my favorites. I use the SD-1 into my marshalls for 80’s and the bd-2 into my fender for blues rock.
How's the sound if you reverse the combos?
Get both and stack them together. They sound great paired.
Agreed these 2 are a mainstay on my board! They're great!

Great comparison. I like the input you offer in addition to a straight up shoot out between these two pedals.
I'm leaning towards the BD2
Blues driver is more full range, while super overdrive is a mid push with bass cut. Super stacked into the Blues is a great useable tone.
Exactly what I was about to say. They should not be compared but stacked 🥳
I’ve done the same thing. Great tone - they compliment each other.

Sd1. Sounds like all my classic rock albums.
An SD-1 into a Marshall played on a guitar with humbucker pickups is THE classic rock sound.
was sceptical because of the amp sound, but great demo and explanation. thanks
I think you did a good job at demonstrating each of the pedals unique strengths ty

la SD1 s utilise pour booster une autre OD , pour ma part je booste une Nobels ODR1 et c est exeptionnel .
The BOSS OD-1 was released in 1977 & the SD-1 in 1981.
This is the best comparison
I like them both. I find the BD2 has more of a volume boost. Booth are nice.

Same thing here. I use a TS 808 into a BD-2... Great stuff. I always use, on every pedalboard, 2 overdrives, a mid-bumped OD, and a full-range OD.
I’m learning toward the overdrive because the blues driver doesn’t sound different enough to me
Blues Driver has more range and has that low vintage vibe going while the SD-1 is for the poodle hair thrash 😎
Why not use both on a clean channel and stack the SD1 INTO the BD2? Use the Blues Driver as your rhythm channel, and step in the SD1 for solos.
SD-1 for me!
Thanks for this man it helped me a lot...
