    Appreciate the advice about the metal edging. This was something I had been planning for with my eventual home, so I'm glad I could learn from your mistakes.
    The flowers look absolutely stunning. The supertunia is just beautiful! Everything is thriving in your garden! Thank you for sharing your garden and the advice :)

    I almost swooned when I first saw that exact Pugster at HD. It is on my must-have list, those blooms are HUGE! The worst spreading grass is Bermuda, nicknamed wiregrass or satan grass. It is the absolute worst. Your gardens look awesome!

    My metal edging has been in for 6 years now and it is wonderful. Bought it at an Edmonton AB Landscaping outfit, it was not cheap but is like the day I installed it, no rust to nothing. It just gives a beautiful crip edge/ division between lawn and bed. Landscaping fabric, cheap for a reason, weeds will find their way through. You have a very beautiful garden, really enjoyed your video

    Hi Matthew! It was really interesting to hear your thoughts on using the metal edging. I use cement pavers (rectangle shape) that fit together, kinda like this (_____(. One end is in a "half circle" and the other end is indented to fit the rounded end into. The nice thing about them is that because of the way they fit together, you can make a curved edge. We have landscape fabric under it, so the weeds/grass isn't too bad. You have so much going on that it will be fun watching your progress. Thank you so much for sharing!

    Loving how lush and green all your plants are. I am really starting to believe that drip irrigation is going to be a must in my gardens. We get so hot and humid here in Delaware. It's almost impossible to keep up with watering. I've never used metal edging here. Not because we have freeze thaw cycles, but because of the rusting. I just use natural edging or rocks. 🌹

    I’m in southern Indiana, and would have the same challenges you listed. I had been considering a natural edge, and you’ve convinced me that I will be much happier if I go that route. I love the natural look, and it won’t really be more maintenance, since I would be pulling crabgrass out of the bed even with the edging.

    We had metal edging professionally installed 9 years ago in our previous home. I won't use it again. One of my kiddos fell on it and got injured, also I've heard dogs often get hurt on it as well. Beautiful garden!

  • @gardeninggrandma5247

    I just ordered some edging for a new small garden I installed. I got the "rusted" look edging. It's a different style than what you have -- it's a corrugated metal style from Dakota. I really don't mind the installation process. I find that to be one of the "fun" chores in the garden. I have flat rock that is stacked 2 rocks high on the rest of my garden beds and yes, grass does creep into the garden, but it's not terribly invasive. I like the look of the stone and I don't mind picking a little grass here and there when I'm out in the garden. I thought I'd try the metal edging this time to change it up a bit, since the new garden is bit removed from the rest. It's reassuring to know I didn't select the edging that you have as I would have been disappointed. I may have problems with heaving in the winter, but I'm okay with making some adjustments in the spring. Fingers crossed my selection for edging will work out fine. If not, I didn't invest a lot so I can always change it up.

    I am really enjoying and learning from your videos. Are you a Master Gardener? You are so knowledgeable! Are the David Austin roses high maintenance? I’d love to have one, but I’m worried about having to use sprays on them.

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not a Master Gardener, but I have thought about becoming one. I just do a lot of research and watch a ton of TH-cam myself! :) I would say the David Austin Roses are no more maintenance than any other rose - some years are better than others. This year all of mine were being eaten alive by something, but last year I had no problems at all. But, they're definitely no pickier than any other rose.

    I use a rubber edging that looks really nice. It's sold at Lowe's My favorite edging though is rock and like you, I don't want to spend a fortune on it as I upgrade. I did find that a mason supply sells stone for very very low prices. I was shocked at how low it was compared to anywhere else. Aside from that, I think it's worthwhile to just add rocks, a few at a time. Eventually you will have a beautiful border.

    Everything is looking so beautiful! Do you know the name of that bluish grass in front of the hibiscus (around the 6:00 mark)? I bought two of these this spring and think they may have been tagged wrong.

  • @rusticanrefined
    @rusticanrefined 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the input on the steel edging. I have been reconsidering my rock borders for some time now, and was thinking to do that. I probably have enough small, medium and big boulders to put a huge dent in your garden beds LOL. BUT, I will tell you ..... the down side of a rock border (unless you mean stone paver brick type borders). The rock borders really eat up your trim line on your weed eater and grass, weeds usually get thru the cracks a lot as well. Plus if you have any creeping Charlie weeds.....they love to crawl over the smaller areas and try to get into your beds as well. I usually end up using a small garden torch to burn around instead of trim. It does leave a small yellow strip but those weeds are such vigorous growers that unless I move the boulders....every month? Something to think about...

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Absolutely! Rocks were considered at the same time I was considering the metal edging, so I've learned a lot since then. What I have seen locally and seems to work is putting the rock edging, but also coming out half a foot or so and putting a decorative gravel (presumably with an underlayment) in front of the larger rock so that you have a nice and tidy edge to work against when trimming and weeding. That is probably what I would do if I was to ever do a rock edge. It's very nice and clean looking.

      I answered your David Austin question in your other comment, but yes in my zone I will need to lift my dahlia bulbs or they won't return. That's the only pain of growing them around here.

    Enjoyed your video again, but how do you care for fig trees? I've been thinking about planting them, but not sure if they will survive in our zone 6a for winter. Do you protect them for cold weather?

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't. It is a Chicago Hardy and this is their second full season in the garden. They woke up really late this year. I'm not the kind of gardener that wants to baby plants over winter. So if it doesn't survive being left out as is without protection, I'll find something that will! haha :)

      @pc0086 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @The Southerner's Northern Garden thank you for answering, I'll try to get one this year. I pre-ordered donut peach tree, heard that the peaches are very tasty. I can't wait for spring to come faster🙏
      Been watching your videos to catch up, but haven't yet seen that you have magnolia. Or could you direct me to your video if you do? Interested to learn more from you, thank you.
      Oh, one last question if you still spray anything to winterize the whole garden bed to prevent or kill mold/ fungus, so the soil is healthier for the next year?

    FYI: for anyone considering metal edging it can work, but not with the "cheap" stuff from Lowes or Home Depot. There is professional landscaper-grade edging that is aluminum, (therefore rust-proof) and comes in several natural colors..black, brown, natural aluminum). Because it has professional grade weight and spikes, it does not lift up out of the ground. It is a bit more expensive, but is maintenance-free once installed. I do like natural edging but it is a lot of work and upkeep to keep it looking nice and neat.
