    Laura & Aaron I just wanted to take a moment to thank you SOOOO much for your channel. I am new home owner, who just moved to the suburbs after living most of my life in apartments in Boston. I went from not even knowing how to turn on a lawn mower to falling in love in love with gardening, and it's all thanks to your videos. I am always excited when a new video comes out. I rave about your videos to my friends. Please continue with the amazing work you both do.

      Valerie, ha ha ha, so you definitely know my pain. And of course there's another Nor'easter headed our ways, so it sounds like we'll have to be patient this season (-__-) . But I cant wait to get started! Keep posting videos Laura. We absolutely love it!

    I'm always excited to see your videos! Living vicariously through your videos right now. lol. Still snowing here in Southern OR, we had 2 days that melted the snow and then 2 days of snow again that just pilled up to about 2-3 inches and blanketed everything. I love your raised beds and cant wait to see what else you put in them and the harvests you get.

I'd love to have a cup of coffee with you and just plant stuff...I think you would be so fun to hang out with (your Mom, too! She's the sweetest). TFS :)

    Oh thank goodness you broke down your soil mix- I've seen too many videos lately that use peat (??) and perlite (??!!) in their raised bed mixes. Those are fine for potting mixes but vegetables need something with umph. I love watching your channel - I'm a horticulturalist out East and wish there were more great gardening shows in the US. I love your finished products and how you accomplish projects the professional way with beautiful planning and foresight. Thank you for the work that y'all do!

    • @GirlyHR
      @GirlyHR 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Here in the UK there's a big push away from peat because of the impact on the environment and I agree with your (??!!) for the perlite lol. I'm not sure why someone would mix perlite into a raised bed mix - that seems odd to me :-) I would use it for sowing seeds and so I guess it ends up in my beds but it would be super expensive to add it to the whole bed.

    • @tulipsmoran5197
      @tulipsmoran5197 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Peat holds moisture and Perlite holds/releases moisture but provides "space" for drainage which desirable for raised beds. Your local rainfall, morning dew humidity will determine which you would use. Heavy composts will cause root rot for areas of normal/high raign. Ideally her beds would need some coir or perlite for drainage.

    • @TheGyreMadHatter
      @TheGyreMadHatter 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, yes, peat and perlite have their place. I know they're great for moisture holding capacity and for providing soil with air pockets but in raised beds, that seems to be an expensive and non-renewable choice when compost, well-rotted manure, grit, and other additives would do the job fine. I just don't understand why some professionals are recommending a potting mix (ie things based in peat with perlite) for a raised bed that sits on top of the ground. I could get it if the bed was on legs but not for ones just up 12-24". I live in an area with weekly rains out East (can't speak for the temperate rainforest in the West) and a good percentage of manure and compost mixed with soil seems to do beautifully and doesn't create root rot issues. But to each their own.

    This black picket fence is going to be interesting. I want white but have been considering green. Maybe a fern green. I know whatever you do it will be classy.

(Not in raised beds of course 😂) Oh, and maybe a video on how to go about burning stuff that needs to be burned, like I know we have a lot of dead limbs from an old Oak tree... and some odd plants. Like, it would be cool to know what can be burned, and what shouldn’t be burned etc.

    Hi Laura! I've noticed comments regarding those labels on your garden cloches. Have you tried any products like "Goo Gone"? It's made to remove adhesive labels and a lot more. It doesn't scratch or damage plastic or glass...
    I've never been that crazy about gardening, but when I stumbled across your videos last year everything changed. My garden was the best it's ever been though it still has a long way to go! I still have a lot of snow (what can you do it's Minnesota) but I am doing garden planning!!! What fun!!

    • @megandcochrane
      @megandcochrane 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Submerging the item with the annoying label into water and baking soda will remove everything without damage or elbow grease. Depending on the label and the item, soaking for 10 minutes to an hour should do.
      And yes, Laura is just that inspiration to get outside and make it happen! I love in the hot southwest and thought I couldn’t grow anything pretty with our summers. Watching her garden kick butt through 100+ degree summers without humidity inspired me to just get up and do it. 🌹

  • @GirlyHR
    @GirlyHR 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    When I did raised beds I also used a mix of top soil, manure and compost but I had to do it all myself (perhaps I should open a Company in the UK selling raised beds mix!!) Also, are you intending to rotate your crops? I use a 5 year rotation so that brassica's go to Legumes & squashes which go to Onions which go to potatoes and their family which go to roots which go to brassica's. It works really well for me and helps to reduce the pests and disease that comes with vegetable gardening :-)

    Hi Laura & Aaron, I’m new at building our raised garden beds, growing lots of veggies, fruit trees, blueberries, and such. I was wondering where did you buy your dooms for your broccoli? What kind of gravel did you guys use to walk on in the garden area? We are building our first raised garden bed and I have bought the raised bed mix for our soil. My raised beds will be taller ones and I was going to do layers of wood, ground clippings, then the raised bed mix. Do you think this will be okay for our raised beds? Hi Laura, as you planted your north poles last year and this is their first full growing season, what percentage of their total (to mature) growth do you think will happen in this first year? Will they grow quickly and then peak and slowly “fill out” over the next few years - or will they grow and spread slowly over a few years? Xx

    When you built the raised beds from garden supply, what did you use to prevent soil from seeping through the cracks of each slat of wood? I am going to build raised beds on a hill where I am going to need to place another slat of wood in the front to keep the bed level. I am planting it near trees so I don’t want to disturb the tree roots.

    How are you planting so early? I live in central oregon, also considered the high desert, and its been in the 20s at night and we woke up to snow the past two days. How do you know when its okay to to start planting? I just ordered a raised bed from garden supply. Should be here next week and my mom and I are starting seeds in her green house next week also. But seeing you start planting makes me feel like I’m way behind when i had originally thought i was on time with everything. Any advice would be awesome. I watch all your videos. So i saw the one where you tested the temperature of soil before you planted but doesn’t the temp change? Or once it is warm it stays warm? This will be my first raised bed planting I’ve always just planted in ground before. Thanks for all the info you are giving on raised beds.

    Are you using pea gravel directly on the ground or did you place a cloth covering underneath in the walkways? How do you keep all the debris (weeds that might grow and fall leaves) off the pathways so nicely?

    What is under the raised beds in your veggie garden??? What’s under the gravel? I have a soggy back yard and want to convert an area to look like yours but about half that size.

    We are so excited to plant our first veggie garden at this house, but it is still pouring rain, thunderstorms, even marble size hail yesterday! A very late winter for us. Will everything still be okay if planted late?? Zone 9a

    Hello! I was just wondering, do you use garden fabric at the bottom of your beds?

    Will the wood on the beds eventually rot if they’re not treated? I need to replace my raised beds due to that reason.

    In the future will you just amend the soil in the raised beds each year, or will you at some point replace it?

      Emily R I too would like to know. My husband built some standing raised beds for me so I didn't have to crouch on the ground. Bas knees. Anyways they did great but not sure if I should replace the soil or amend it.
