- Welcome to the August Hydrangea Garden Tour! We are currently in a mild drought and combined with the excessive heat the garden is in a slump, but the hydrangeas are trying their hardest! I have over 70 hydrangeas in my garden, of all shapes and sizes, and will be planting more this season reaching upwards of 100. I hope you enjoy this shorter garden tour focused solely on the hydrangeas and another garden tour will be available at the end of September where hopefully the weather will have cooled and I'll have even more plants getting settled into the new beds I created for them.

The Original in Endless Summer group is only the name of the color blue or pink (probably not the best choice of name, so people get confused). It blooms on old and new grows as well. I have it in my garden for several years and it is a stunning bloomer with sky blue color. Became one of my favorite so far among hydrangea macrophylla. I would highly recommend it. I love your garden, it is very beautiful.
Thanks for that correction! I didn't realize The Original bloomed on new growth as well, but I looked into it and it says it does. It must not have as hardy of buds as BloomStruck, because I still hear consistently in my Zone it called "Endless Bummer". This is good to know though for those in lower Zones (more southern) it may be an option. I still prefer BloomStruck because of those red stems though! I'm pinning this so everyone will know that was my mistake.

You have beautiful hydrangeas, they are definitely a favorite of mine too, I have to try and control myself because that is all that I would buy and now there are new ones for next year. I was looking last night in the garden and thought there is a place for 2 new ones.. I have extended my gardens to the point where its almost a full time job looking after them but I love it, garden therapy.
Thank you for showing different hydrangeas in beds for perspective. In spring I planted 'Ruby', 'Tiny Tuff Stuff' and 'Little Lime'. They are small but thriving so far. Your video helps me visualize how they will mature! You do an excellent job of presentation for any type of gardener (newbie or more seasoned). I also appreciated seeing clematis 'Stand by Me' which I just got this summer. Looking forward to it growing to full height too. Thanks for taking the time to do these videos. I garden in Zone 5.

Your hydrangeas look great! My hedge of Bobos are burned as this is their first year and full sun! They are my favorite. My Quickfire fabs are gorgeous put them in pots as they were purchased small last fall. The firelight tidbit are in the ground the have huge panicles very healthy. Great information. Stay cool. Love love all your hydrangeas - I too love panicle & smooth hydrangeas….the only one that do not do well in our northern Canadian climate is the macrophyllas….they don’t usually bloom well for us (even the ones that bloom on new wood as our season is too short for them to form buds on new wood). Wished I had as much garden as you to plant more hydrangeas. 💚🪴🇨🇦

Lovely Hydrangea plants there. I've grown cuttings for Hydrangea, Hebe, Buddleia, Spirea & Lavender. Most of these are on my channel header and I made a new Hebe video which shows these cuttings on their journey into big shrubs/plants. Happy Growing :)

My Endless Summer Original Hydrangeas bloom on new wood in Nebraska. I just be sure to cover them to protect them from late spring freezes.
i love all your hydrangeas.... they look so happy where they are... i have two pinky winkys and I have zero blooms on them this year. I was told they do not need full sun, they get around 4 hours...I fertilized... I just don't know what i am doing wrong.
Oh no! At what size did you plant them? If they’re new this year and a bit stressed they may not bloom well, but it could be they’re not getting enough sun. Very odd!
Hi Matthew! I don't have any hydrangeas because I don't have room for them, but they are so pretty and the detailed information you gave on each one was fantastic! I didn't realize there were fairly small varieties available. I may look into getting some for containers. Where they would be would get either full sun, or morning shade and afternoon sun. I am fairly new to your channel..:. And love it 😀!! I want to know about that gorgeous block patio you have. Is there a video where you talk about what that is made of and how you constructed it? It almost looks “castle-esk”. 🥰
I had it installed - it wasn't a project I could have ever completed alone because of the slope of our backyard. It had to be built up quite a bit, but it does look very castle-esk and I love it! Now, I just need a pergola to go over it. Maybe next year!

Have you ever dealt with spider mites on any of your hydrangeas? Spider mites have eaten up my little limes this year 😭 Gorgeous hydrangea landscape you have!!
I haven't thank goodness! I don't think I've ever had any insect problems with any hydrangeas at all, which I'm thankful for because I have so many. If organics don't work, you may have to try a systemic soil drench as a last resort.
Best information on hydrangeas I've come across so have now subscribed. How can you tell if a hydrangea is overwatered?

stems can be a sign. Over watering isn’t typically a problem with hydrangeas - it’s sitting water that’s the issue in my experience. It needs consistent moisture, but free draining soil.

Well after watching your gorgeous display of Hydrangeas I think I’ll see what Natorps has available. They reopen 9/2. I have a new Oakleaf Hy that died & they said they will replace it. Is it ok to leave them in their containers & plant next spring? I want to plant them after we move.
I would not leave them exposed in their container all winter. They may be ok depending on the hardiness zone, but I heel anything into raised beds over winter in their containers if I can't get it planted. They would likely be fine that way. I've done that with hydrangeas for the past couple of years and they've done really well.
I bought proven winners firelight tid bits in June on line from Home Depot. They started wilting the next day. They have a one year warranty so I will give them a chance. I pruned off the dead and now a month later new little buds are coming out. I put them in indirect sun. Do you think they will do well and what steps should I take for success? You have a beautiful garden and I will follow you.
One of my gardener friends recommended Fire Light Tidbit (new variety) for those who want a bold panicle hydrangea, but don't have the room for the massive full sized Fire Light. Have you tried it? I'm going to plant a few in spring to see how they do before planting a hedge of them at my property.
Proven Winners sent me out one to try a couple months ago. I planted it around my Rising Sun Redbud. It didn't bloom this season, but should next season. It looks like a very promising variety for small areas!
This was most helpful. We are starting a new garden after moving to WV, next to Ohio. I do like hydrangeas a lot and have been dreaming of planting different varieties and colors. Thank you for all the info you provided. We have a lot of deer coming to the property. Would they eat and destroy hydrangea? Would we have to put up a fence? Any info from viewers as well would be much appreciated.
Deer love hydrangeas. I luckily don’t have a deer problem. Liquid Fence apparently works pretty well but has to be sprayed pretty consistently and it can be expensive I believe.

Great video! We have recently installed drip irrigation to our flower beds. I’m trying to find information that would give me a guide on how much water my Hydrangeas need per hour. I live in southern Oklahoma,( zone 7), our summer temperatures have been in the mid 100s for over a month with no rain! I think 6 of my Little Lime Hydrangeas to are in trouble. They seem to be burning up even though I’m hand watering after the plants have been watered by drip.
I know it’s difficult to offer advice on our extreme conditions, but any advice would be helpful!
Watering advice is extremely difficult because I don’t know your soil type and you didn’t mention whether these were newly planted or their lighting conditions. Either way, hydrangeas will probably always burn somewhat their first couple of years until their root system is more established. Even if they’re not knew if they don’t have any break in temperatures like that they’re highly likely to burn without some sun protection. The best I can recommend without more information is two 2-gallon per hour emitters on either side of the rootball and water for a full hour per day in conditions like that. Potentially twice a day if that’s not helping. But if they’re new plants, their root systems just won’t be developed to take up that much moisture at once so watering more isn’t necessarily as helpful.

Do you know of any hydrangeas that can stand zone 8b heat? I love them, but it's been a struggle for me to grow them down in FL.
Limelight states it will grow all the way to 9a. Little Lime to 8b. You can look on Proven Winner's website at the zone for each type, but Limelight stretches the most zones. The zone only indicates winter hardiness so all hydrangeas would likely all survive in your zone (given enough water), but anything that isn't listed in your Zone may not get enough cold hours to bloom reliably. I would definitely recommend having them on drip or some other consistent moisture to battle the extended heat.
How much water do you apply on your drip irrigation for your hydrangeas ? We just installed the drip so trying to figure out the application rate how much and how often ?
This varies so much by soil type and how much per hour your emitters are emitting. I typically put two two gallon per hour emitters on all my shrubs. They’ll need more water when getting established. During the hottest part of the summer I sometimes water everyday for 30 minutes, which gives them two gallons per shrub. But during the rest of the season much less. You’ll have to experiment to find what makes them happy.

GreatGardenPlants.com is a great place to purchase small shrubs for planting. All of their shrubs come in small quart sizes which make them easier to plant and they're cheaper if you catch them on sale.
Your hydrangeas are beautiful!, But I saw another striking plant at the 14:01 mark, It's a full Chartreuse color, with no flowers. Please tell me what is. Thanks!
That’s a Sun King Aralia and they are an awesome shade perennial! I planted them last fall so they’re still fairly small.

I picked up a ruby slipper oakleaf hydrangea about a month ago. It says filtered sun/partial shade. I thought I had the perfect place and sat the container in the area to make sure it would be ok. Next to a circle of large trees, where there is morning sun and afternoon shade. All the leaves on the back side near the wooded area dropped off. I haven't planted it yet because I'm afraid it will die. I'm in 7b/8a area. Any advice?
I would just keep it moist. It’s a tough time of the year to have any plants sitting outside in a nursery container without water twice a day. I would get it in the ground as soon as possible as that will be it’s best chance. It probably won’t do well this season, but keep it well watered and it will hopefully make a come back next year after it’s acclimated and rooted in. Trim off any blooms just below the bloom if it has any to help it along and not have to support those blooms.
I’m in zone 10a and have a hard time with hydrangeas. Most of my garden is full sun. My house faces west. 😑
I don’t know any hydrangeas that are marked to grow in Zone 10.
Hi ….. I watch your videos and I like the content of them. I am located in Michigan and I recently have been planting incrediball hydrangeas. I would like to learn more about them and I have Two questions for you …if you don’t mind.
Am I expecting flopping for the first two years ? Am I expecting wilting from them for the first two years ? Pleas assist me because I am not sure what to do as I am seeing flopping and wilting from them. Thank you
Hi! They do have stronger stems than Annabel, but if you’re pruning them correctly they should develop some stronger stems in a few years and hold their blooms up pretty well. There will always be some that flop on brand new growth, but the older thicker stems should hold up better. Depending on where you plant them (full sun) they will probably always wilt during the day. I have mine in only evening sun and they still wilt even after 4 years with the dry weather we’ve had. I wouldn’t recommend them in full sun unless you have a drip system and you water them probably daily depending on your climate.
Hi Matthew …thank you ….I was freaking out because I had purchased 15 incrediball hydrangeas for my huge garden area I have. I wasn’t sure I had the right plant is why I was worried. I have most of them in full sun and some in partially sun. So for the ones that are in full sun you do recommend dripping? I water them every other day as I am afraid I may rotten the plants …. @@danielcabrera6333 drip would probably be preferable. Unless you’re planting in heavy clay that doesn’t drain, drip isn’t going to cause any plant rot. But, realistically I wouldn’t recommend them in full sun all day at all after how I’ve seen them perform. The tags may say full sun, but arborescens, macrophylla, and serrata type hydrangeas will all likely wilt during the day in full sun unless you’re watering often. It’s just how they behave. Paniculatas prefer more sun and won’t wilt on you because their stems are much stronger, but they would still burn and would need drip as well.
Hi Matt ….thank you ….I started planting them in the front of my house which gets sun all day till probably 4 pm and when they are well water they won’t wilt but when they aren’t they do. And yes I have clay soil in most parts of the garden. Do you think I will have issues with the películatas hydrangeas ? I have two on the ground since last April and they are growing and ready to bloom. I have a few more of the pineculata I want to plant this week and am making the wholes and the soil is very clay ….. I am using cow manure at eh bottom of the whole and adding the garden soil with fertilizer……. Is this going to be ok? Please let me know. Thank you
What’s it mean when standard limelight hydrangeas get a few yellow leaves ? &also brown crunchy leaves Not sure if watering enough or to much, also a few looks like they were burned they had a tint of brown on them , they are in full sun & it had been really hot here in Indianapolis. I believe I’m in zone 6a
Definitely not watering enough if the leaves are brown and crunchy. Paniculata leaves, like the limelight, will yellow on the very lowest leaves if it’s heat stressed and thirsty.

Your hydrangea looks stunning! I am a big fan of hydrangea however I seems not have lucky with them. I have limelight , firelight, incrediball, big leave but they are all doing terrible. They are pretty new. Some of them I planted last year and some of them I planted this year. What will be some reason that my limelight is not blooming? They (the leaves) do look much lighter green than yours. Could be a iron deficiency issue?Could that cause no blooms? I heard it could be too new… I think I brought them 3 gallon size. I am very frustrated this year.
Did you fertilize all of your hydrangeas in early spring also for your limelight hydrangea did you cut it back in early spring?

All the things Cathy mentioned are important. All of the varieties you mentioned should bloom on new growth. If they're not on drip they may need to be. If you have really heavy clay soil it could be getting too much water causing yellowing foliage. Limelight's have lighter leaves naturally than many other paniculatas which have been bred to have darker foliage because it appears healthier. I would give them some more time to settle in, check the moisture levels, fertilize well, and see if they perform better next year. The first year for any hydrangea will be slow growth and fewer blooms. They take longer to establish good roots if they're not in ideal moisture levels and conditions to put on significant growth.

What hydrangea would you recommend for part/full shade?
I don’t know your Zone so I can’t answer that question fully. There’s not really any hydrangeas that are going to enjoy full shade. Your best bet would probably be an arborescens variety (aka smooth leaf), but they’re still going to need some sun to perform and bloom well. Big leaf may work as well depending on your Zone. Choose one that is reblooming .
What about your cascade hydrangea! How’s that doing?
Still no blooms! I didn’t include it because I haven’t had experience with it but a few months and only wanted to include items that have grown reliably for me so far. I’ll will do an update on it in a separate video later in the season. It may need more light than it is getting, but I also don’t want it to burn in a container so it’s a delicate balance. 😂
Ok, same, all my incrediball had no blooms the first year and now they look fabulous. & i just had to have the fairytrail because it looked amazing in photos, but worried about light too... seems like we will see next season. Looking forward to more from you. We have a ton of the same plants so love seeing how they look in your beautiful yard.
