Creating New Flower Beds: Step 2 (The Natural Edge)

  • Hi, everyone! Today is all about the natural edge. After my discussion of why I don't like metal edging in my garden (see • Metal Edging is the WO... ), I thought it was time to show you how I create the edges for my new flower beds. In my opinion, they're easier to maintain with regular grooming with a weed eater and basically FREE, which is the best price, right?

    I am a retired teacher and teacher supervisor. So I think I am qualified to say that you are an excellent teacher! You are clear and precise, which ensures that your students - viewers like me - are not confused at all at the end of your lesson. I am deeply appreciative of your exquisite teaching. Also, what is the variety of the hydrangea in the foreground while you were digging? That is the one I saw at the park that I want in my yard. Esther

    Highly recommend this method!!! Ever since I discovered no-dig I’ve been a fan. I normally make my new beds in fall anyhow so that takes care of the time they need to break down. This year I added another step in there. Under the mulch I put shredded leaves (grass clips would be great in spring and summer) to break down into compost. I will see if I like this come spring.

    Thanks! I definitely enjoyed. I used the cardboard method with my last flower bed, and will stick with that method. I am always ordering cat food and dogfood online so usually keep a supply of cardboard. I was going to extend my bed was was not sure how to do the curves. It takes a lot of mulch. Since Lowes delivered my lawnmower around when I built the last bed, I had them deliver a pallet of Evergreen compost also. It took every bit plus more! So may have them deliver two next time. Here in SC with the 95 degree heat and high humidity, this will definitely be a fall project.

    Hi Matthew! I love the way your natural edge turned out. I've tried to picture it when you talked about it. It was nice of you to show the actual way to do it, and the way you explain everything is awesome! You explain it in such a way that anyone should be able to do it. Unfortunately our back area is gravel, but weeds and grass come up and needs to be pulled, or dug up, which is hard for me because I have arthritis in my hands. Can the cardboard method be done without mulch and water? Probably a silly question, but thought I'd ask as my only other alternative is using a ground sterilizer on it. You're such a tease! I'm looking forward to seeing what you have coming and where you put/plant it. ;-) Thank you so much for sharing! BTW, loved seeing one of your pups out with you, so cute!

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much! The cardboard will eventually break down, but you can put soil or compost over it as well instead of just mulch. There’s a new organic weed control called Dead Weed Brew by Bonide that works pretty well if you mix it at the highest rate, if you want something organic to spray.

    Thank you for the Contractor Paper tip. Didn’t know that. I’m making a bed with retaining wall bricks either 3 or 4 bricks deep. I plan on putting bags of soil in to create a raised bed. Do I need to put a mulch or compost over the cardboard/paper layer? Area is where I had a large Azalea removed.

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can put soil directly over the cardboard instead. It may be deep enough that you don't need to put anything down before the soil is placed on top, but it doesn't hurt to add cardboard or newspaper first before the soil.

    Looks great! What do you do with the grass that you took out? It’s so heavy and seems such a waste to throw away although I do throw mine away sometimes. I also have edged my garden and dug a deep trench that I can then place the grass upside down and cover it with many inches of soil and then mulch. Crossing my fingers that I don’t regret it. Seems like a built in compost in theory

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden

    Great job on the Edging. I was wondering if you have clay soil how do you amend the soil for plants with this method?

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I discuss this a bit in my next video that airs on Thursday. The mulch will breach down over time and amend the bed. I don't fully amend any beds unless I notice a severe problem that could present issues. I also try to plant smaller plants to begin with, so they can grow into and acclimate to the clay soil easier that way.
