Spike's accent does get better, throughout the show he got coached by Anthony Stuart Head, so the accent he develops is basically ASH's real accent
All hail the moment the show would never ever be the same again.
Yay Spiiiiike
Actually, we do know he was a vampire in the 60s, because he said that. He fed on A flower child and spent the whole night watching the tracers from his hand.
GENUINELY thought he said 'fell off'. This makes a lot more sense, though! XD
Ah, the introduction to one of the best characters in Buffy! I will never get over Spike.
One of the most iconic scenes in the whole show when Spike ( one of the greatest characters in The Buffyverse ) rolls into town and drives right over the Sunnydale sign. School Hard is one of the greatest episodes of S2. James Marsters was so impressive in the role, he became an instant fan favourite. Some great writing in this episode, when Xander goes to get Buffy's bag and pulls out a yoyo, tampon and then stake, this shows Buffy from child, to teenager, to adolescent showing how she is growing up. Great too when Joyce clobbers Spike on the head with the axe. All in all a great episode for early S2 with Angel/Spike/Drusilla who have a shared history through the centuries to add to the arc of the Season.
This is usually one of two mpments people reference as the turning point of the series. Spike literally kills off all S1 remnants by killing off The "Annoying" One, and he tells him just before he does what direction the show will be taking. The other turning point is _Prophecy Girl,_ but I consider this episode more of the actual turning point and _Prophecy Girl_ more of an idea of where the series could go.
To me the two real starts of the series are 2-3 or 2-6. I grudgingly give it to 2-3, but 2-4 is so ‘ok’ and 2-5 is my worst episode of the series, as it starts with the antithesis of what the show was conceived of as.
The first 14 episodes are really the (important) preview before chapter 1
@@RLucas3000 There's a difference between turning point and start. I don't look at either episode I referenced as a starting point. Everything beforehand still has to happen in both our comments. Therefore they are turning points to me. It may feel like splitting hairs, but it took me a moment with your comment with the word start, so I feel turning point works better than seeing the moments as starts of anything.
A lot less ritual, and a little more fun. Perfectly defines what he brings to the series.
Spike & Dru are here!!
👏👏👏👏👏
I would say that the average for a slayer is somewhere around fifteen or sixteen max. I think that buffy is already an exception. In fact, I would say that she was bound to die with the master. It puts her past the age where she should be dead. Not that it's a should or shouldn't be thing. Tince it's probably wrong to die that young on average. So that's bad, but, that's the common thing. If you stretch it out over the thousands of years or whatever it's supposed to have been.
Drusilla’s parents in real life are Martin Landau and Barbara Bain
THAT. IS. AMAZING!! WHY HAS NO ONE TOLD ME THAT BEFORE?? (I love watching old Mission Impossible epsiodes XD)
@@VeggieGamer I know them from Space 1999 mostly
Ah, I haven't seen any Space 1999, but am mildly obsessed with classic MI! XD Landau is my favourite character!
@@VeggieGamerYou didn't know!? You know all the trivia, I also can't believe no one told you
@@alicequinn505 Maybe someone did but I missed it, but I will DEFINITELY be bringing it up in the intro to the next episode I record XD
Spike is the best character on the show. Drusilla's pretty great too.
Seasons 2 and 3 are SO GOOD! Spike ends up getting a much bigger role in the series than initially intended, because he was so popular.
I really like the movie, but it's very different than the show. It's just a fun, goofy time. (And actually, it would be fitting to watch it soon in honor of Donald Sutherland.)
It’s so weird seeing quark from deep space nine as a teacher 😂
Principal, not the same as a teacher. Administrative duties, not educational.
But yeah...I keep expecting his ears to be larger... 🤣
Spike ❤
“..he sounds Australian..” 😎
Yeah.. I just tell myself he has been around. I think boxer rebellion was china and was Woodstock US?
As you already know, Spike's accent and dialogue improves significantly as the show goes on. This episode is where the show turns on its head and takes a new, better direction. And Go Joyce with the axe!
Great reaction, pretty much how I felt at the time. The arrival of Spike and Dru really marks the beginning of the incredible heights the series achieves.
Most Slayers are "Called" in their mid-teens. Few make it to 18...
Spike, unlike other Vampires, actively hunts Slayers. He references the one in the Boxer Rebellion when he's bragging to the Annoying One.
Drusilla-mad, loopy, psychic and vicious-is one of the most consistently terrifying vamps.
Love the soft reboot on the villains in the second season :P
Spike, my favorite character in the series, arrived, we can say that things finally "turned on"
Saw this pop up while I was watching your HP book club (I'm at the end of Prisoner of Azkaban, amazing btw, you are such a joy to listen to). But I had to speed over here to watch this first hahaha
My favourite episode of the series
I watched Buffy the movie when it was new and I was 12. It's worth watching once. The plot was a great idea but it was also an early 90's comedy, so it was very silly. Lots of potential, but it really needed a series to give it justice.
Yeah, SCHOOL HARD is phenomenal, a legendarily good episode. And Spike is my favorite vampire of all time, I'm so happy you've met and approve.
Oh, and the actors who play spike and dru are both American stage actors, so their accents are fake and their acting is fantastic. The fee, fi fo, fum line is from something Shakespeare, their idea. They're fun to have around.
And they had to get rid of the teenage vampire, as he was due for a growth spurt and vamps aren't supposed to change. Besides, showed you what a badass Spike was.
Hi bruddaaaa
Love this reaction and just wanted to respond to 14:05 and say there is an episode later this season which you’ll see that (I personally believe) is the best prompt/moment to watch the movie. You’ll know when you watch it. Thanks for the reaction!
Regarding vampire accents - one thing to consider is that over the course of a century or two, many vampires will have wandered the world a bit, and their accents will likely gradually evolve, as they adjust to the way the folks speak in the area they are currently hunting.
James Marsters who plays Spike was born in California, in Greenville.
Juliet Landau who plays Drusilla was also born in California, in LA.
This is too funny to me because I know a guy who comes from around where Veg must live(they even look alike with similar accents, it's very bizarre to me lol) and he watched this episode years ago and was shocked that Spike was suppose to even be English. He thought he was from New York or something. I explained to him exactly what you just said, that people lose their accents in America over time. Now he's been in America a very long time and his accent has faded so much it almost started to sound fake! 🤣
@@Gwenhwyfar7 LOL he has become what he once mocked!
Amusingly, I've heard Giles' accent is a bit more posh than Tony Head's actual accent, and apparently he coached James Marsters in something close to his normal accent!
"Die Hard reference maybe??" Good guess!
Manic Street Preachers is one of my favourite bands!
Awesome! Me too! The number of bands I have seen live is next to zero, but I managed to see them in Camden a few years ago on a Holy Bible anniversary tour! 🙂 Have never heard of PCP outside of them and this episode! XD
@@VeggieGamer I'd love to see them live, but they've never been to my country =( I guess I'll have to go to Wales!
