Every now and then, you come across a person who you can really identify with. I have been rebuilding cars since the early eighties, and have been inspired by Hot Rod magazine my whole life. Steve, thanks for all the tips and knowledge over the years. Can't think of a better way to spend my free time than in your garage.
So many cars get the backyard bench cocktail of fiberglass and fillers. It'll hold up for a while. That cardboard absorbed alot of the essentail resons and epoxies needed to be durable. Im gonna hate to see that hood in a couple years though. If it lasts that long. Prob be changed over again in a few months. Steve and Dave are super cool cats that are livin the dream. Ive watched that car be built like 7 differant ways over the years. I was a kid when frieburger found it at the scrap yard and done the first build. Still got the magizine somewhere. I would love to come cali and be part of their crusher camaro shanannagins. Steves house is the coolest mopar safe haven in the world. I wonder what hes got hidden they havent showed us. Im sure there's somethin extremly cool and valuable hiding out in those weeds. Awesome show! Thanks guys

They sell wax paper onion boards for a reason. Notice the oil like ring left on the cardboard after done wipin the filler? Thats the resons that need to be in the product not the mix board. Ive done it too, and it bit me in the ass a few years later. Whatever floats ur boat though, you arent paintin any cars for livin. Not for too long anyways.
J Rod I've mixed on cardboard for years and my coworker has done so for over 20 years.. we make top fuel drag car bodies put of fiberglass and also carbon fiber.. I think I'm familiar with it.. have you ever even seen the inside of a can of that stuff? It's never mixed perfectly.. you're just stupid and pretentious.
Cardboard makes zero difference, that is something salesman tell people to get them to buy mixing products and materials. The quality of the filler & the way its applied are what makes it last or not last. Get some real experience and stop parroting what you read or hear!

Push it up threw the hole from the bottom, rough up the mating surfaces and secure it with resin and pop rivets. Setup maybe takes a little more time, but you get to keep the 2" flanges and blending is so much easier...
a neat trick a seen once was someone trowing the thickened resin intoo a thick plastic bag and then cut a small corner of one end he then used it as a cake decorator and squeesed the plastic bag laying down a nice bead al along the part needing to be bonded , saves a lot of mess and time too he used some sort of glass beads intoo normal resin to thicken it enough to use it to stick the deck and the hull of a speedboat together , whent on like squeesing toothpaste out of a tube
Thanks for the tips sir, question though - why not push the hood scoop in from the bottom of the new hood? Wouldn't the edges of the hood then butt up against the scoop? Thank you.
Why did you not install the scoop from the inside instead? Wouldn't it be cleaner and easier to do it that way and with almost no chance of it flying off if any one of those epoxies / fillers didn't set right? Epoxy it from the inside and use the screws exactly the same way you did on the outside, except on the inside. You could leave them there forever this way and have both the epoxy as well as the mechanical fasteners in place for extra security. Then on the outside surface you'd have a lot less filler and bondo to add to smooth it out so it should look better and be stronger overall. If I'm wrong on that please tell me why. I'm not a body guy but it seemed logical to me to do it that way.
I picked up a couple years ago, the neighbors a 64 1/2 hipo mustang, it spent most of its life as a drag car. It has a 'vintage' scoop like this on it, BUT it has the LARGE hole in the front. (hood was cut to be functional ram air). Which is 'time period correct'? ram air or Cowl induction? My hipo IS a old drag car, and Ram air.
would it work if you cut a slightly bigger hole and and fitted the scoop from the underside so you don't have to blend it in from the top? that way any blending you need to do would be from the under side where nobody would see it?
When I saw the thumbnail for this vid in my feed I nearly thought you'd roped Edd China in to do some stuff with you... on that note, that would be a super cool crossover!!
I also colour the area under the scoop so when you cut the hole from the underside you can just paint the cut edge and the bonding material for a neater finish.
Why do it from the top? Flip the hood (leave the 2 inch lip on the cowl) and glass it into the the hood from the bottom? The only thing needed on the top of the hood would be to fill in any gaps between the cowl and the hole made in the hood. That would leave the lines of the hood clean instead of raised around the cowl. Just a thought.
Exactly! And use proper tools and saftey for starters. Then use ITW Plexus adhesives. Dish out the radius to apply mat to prevent cracking then a ultra thin skim of filler. That would prevent hidius build up and questionable structural integrity

Why weren't the hood flanges bonded from under the hood for a flush finish and rigidity? Personally, i would have cut slots to feed the flanges into, bonded from the inside.
In no way an expert, but was wondering why you wouldn't cut a slot for the scoop to slide into the hood and attach it from the bottom and inside. The hole is cut afterwards from the underside. I think it would be a much cleaner look and less body work.

Steve it will not last long, Why you say? Because Long Strand is not a bonding agent. that scoop will go air born someday. You need to remove all signs of gel coat or tool gel coat you need to get down to fiberglass, than mix up some laminating resin wet areas to be glassed use some Fiberglass mat several layers than let cure than grind until you itch like crazy than body work it. man this made me cringe...no prepping of either surface, no cleaning off the gel coat/ primer on either panel before bonding it. You need to take each panel down to the raw exposed strands in order to get a good bond between them.
Yeah, that's not how fiberglass works. That thing will delaminate . Laminating resin and mat bonded to the fiberglass parts with gel coat removed from both parts first. That's from the top and that's the shortcut way. But it should be done from the bottom to be right, but that's the long way.

that is probaly the way i would have done it. that way if it does manage to brake loose, it wont fly away.

Why not to mount it from under the hood? That way the bonded surface is hidden under the hood and the whole setup can be built to look very neat.

I use a 1/2 to 3/8 drill bit in the 4 inside corners before cutting for radius corners. Easier than a jigsaw.

why not bond from the bottom of the hood so the flange is on the under side?

Why not fit it from the underside I always do it can be a really tight fit and then just use paintable silicone sealant it gives a factory finish.
