Hi Satori, Ive watched a few of your videos and think you do a great job. I don’t quite agree with some of your points though. I’ve read through the comments here and while I understand you were trying to show what can be improved about the logos delivered. It is not fair to comment on what the designers did or did not deliver as your brief is pretty vague. You do not mention what file formats you would like delivered and if the tagline is required in the final product. These terms are also sometimes outlined in tiers somewhere on the sellers fiverr page which is not noted in the video. I guess my problem is that this video frames fiverr in a bad light. Jon Sorrentino, I feel you man, I do. However, the way I see it is the following: You, as a designer, if the client does not provide details, should dig in to try to find the last bit of useful information you can get to try to align your concept with the business. So, in this two cases, they were not squeezing the client for info. They took whatever was given and worked around it. Big mistake if you ask me. Cheers.
That is unless they did ask and he intentionally left it out of the video. Because anyone who is been on fiverr or ever try to set up an account on forever knows that part of the set up process that it automatically guides you and recommends that you outline your what the client gets for what they pay for as a matter of fact if I’m not mistaken I think you’re going to have to in order to post your services. So the thing is he knew from the moment he chose those people what he was going to get and what he wasn’t going to get. I’m pretty sure that for five dollars they mention what file types he would and would not get which just goes to show that drawing with jazza did this comparison way better because if my memory serves me right he chose a $50 service, $150 service, and a $250 service with the same parameters for all three. Well defined parameters as well. The whole video just reeks I don’t wanna spend more than $10 to prove that he can’t find good designers on firverr which is further further from the truth because I know people that personally use forever all the time and have great experiences.
Great video! I like the whole concept of it and think there are plenty of benefits in it for both designers and people looking to hire a designer. Some of the benefits I noticed are that: 1) We get a good idea of what a $5 logo gets you (design itself and deliverables). 2) Your critique of each logo is fair and comes with insight that other designers can immediately apply to their work. 3) You actually show what a more seasoned or knowledgeable designer would come up with when you redesign each logo. Thanks for the awesome vid!
For the people who say how he expects a masterpiece or raw file for 5 dollars : He doesn't. He just tested this to see what happens. Keep up the great work Satori, i watch your videos regularly! :)
The people doing these designs are people who can easily live on the $20 USD per day that they might pull in from doing such work over an 8-10 hour day. They are typically located in places like India and the Philippines and their graphic design educations (if any) pale in comparison to that of a western-educated designer.
8:44 "and again its not finished, its just me spending 10 minuets quickly working on things." The fattest middle finger to another designer I have ever seen.
Dude...love your critic, especially how you edited the the first logo. I enjoyed watching this video, very informative. I am actually pissed at how those $5 logo designers boast about their professionalism and still can't do much . Some guys even beg you to give them the job, and they waste your time. Thanks for this video.
I've been waiting for a video like that for some time, I loved it. I'm a graphic designer from Peru and here there are also many pseudo designers that offer works of that quality, practically pulling their prices to the floor. We need to better educate people about the importance of a good logo. A hug.
Nice video of showing the quality of the cheap Plattform fivr. Thanks. Sorry to say but your logos were not a big improvement. You included way to much text and the contrast of the sublines is very low. I recommend some easy testings for crating your own logo. Like contrast, readability, uniqueness and remindability test :) hope I could help.
What is the best practice? - Setting measurement units to mm or px? - What width size should be the border around elements in logo to look good on small and bigger sizes? - Is the best practice to start doing logo is making it from small size and then scale to bigger? - What measurement units should I use for logo elements, border, text?
I really like some of the points you make, however, the video as a whole comes off as kind of condescending. First, the brief you made was not a well informed brief. You didn't say what formats you wanted or needed and you didn't say if you wanted the tagline to be incorporated with the logo. Second, you provided nothing of learning value to us viewers. You brought the logo onto the screen and you ripped into it calling out weaknesses instead of opportunities and not in a very helpful way like the second one with the pattern inside the b. Maybe something that would have been more helpful would be "Okay I see where they were going with this and it isn't a terrible design but lets think back to design fundamentals and see what would have worked a bit better" so not much deconstructing going on there more like "this design is bad, im gonna do one in 10 minutes and wow look how much better mine is and in only 10 minutes" Third, you put your logo on the screen but you didn't provide your logo in 3 different sizes the way you did theirs. Personally, I'm not sure your first logo would not have worked at a smaller size because the gray was so light that the tagline would be completely illegible and so would the name. But we'll never know because we only saw it at a larger size. Finally, you didn't show the offerings. You ragged on them for not including files but I don't know anybody that would send all of those files for 5 dollars to a buyer who has no reviews, no past history of success or anything. How do they know you weren't a scammer? Sorry to come across so critical of the video, but it seems as though most of these Fiverr videos are being made to put a designer or artist on blast without them even knowing it. Its like the teacher showing your project to the class and saying "here is what NOT to do" without you even knowing the teacher is doing that. Its kind of embarrassing. Hopefully in the future if you do remake this type of video, you can at least let the artist know their logo is being used as an example on a youtube video of what NOT to do and being deconstructed and compared to another designer in front of 208,000 + viewers. But since you didn't go into licensing and usage rights for Fiverr or if its included in the 5 dollar price, Im not even sure what to do.
I was thinking the same exact things. What can you expect from a person who's making you a logo for just 5 bucks. Tom comes off as way too condescending sometimes
Amem. As I was wathing this video I had to pause it and say to myself "Damn, this dude is kind of a douche" I mean, both logo, as not super professional as they were, at least they were original and you can see that the person at least tried to do something. And he goes on, puts an W inside a square and goes out like "See how awesome I am?"
The first logo was probably from a software logo generator. The blue and orange compass circling the pointer had two shades to show depth. I doubt anyone would go through such lengths for $5.00 What I've noticed about the pro designers and the amateurs is that pro designer's images can attract your attention with relevant colors and a simplistic design to describe a business. The amateurs want you throw everything and the kitchen sink in your design with colors that clash most of the time.
really great tutorial, yeah I called it a tutorial, count me as your loyal subscriber ..carry on bro.recommended to all who are interested in the logo design industry
Great video!, Thanks. Very interesting. I've been wondering about how Fiverr works, and was good to hear how you're thinking. You could say the first guy actually did a good job in being creative. I wouldn't expect to get a finished logo for that price, but some ideas. With your adjustments, that first one turned out quite cool in my opinion (Navigatinon compass and everything). I'll check out more of your videos; you have an inspiring and nice approach to the matter.
For how long has it been 'standard practice' to include AI files for free, lol? I would have thought you would always charge like half the logos worth for the AI format. Too much can go wrong by sending an editable logo to a client, if they pay for it then you know they most likely will know how to use it.
I’ve been doing GD for 16 years and NEVER have heard of a completely editable AI file automatically being given!? Ridiculous notion. I do provide a font-outlined EPS, allowing for minimal changes for printing variations. But once a logo is created no one should be playing with it and it’s your creation.
At least the designers each turned in something different. BOTH your logo designs look EXACTLY the same. The $5 logos are more memorable than yours in my opinion. Easier to recall. I think that this is a fail on your part.
Nathan Runda I actually liked the first logo and thought for $5 he didn’t have much to complain about. I didn’t like the second design but him putting a W in a blue box was uninspiring and wouldn’t even take me 10 minutes. At least the bad design of the second logo was original.
.. I like all logos, for the $5 ballmark price creativity is certainly all there. Well done to those people who created these logos for $5 and kudos to the youtuber who refined their logos. Impressive work. 👍👍👍👍
I know, what Opaque, translusent and transparent mean in real life, but when you say, export png to opaque is with white background, just like JPEG right? Transparent png has transparent parts in image. Am I right?
Yes. But an opaque PNG is not the same as a JPG. A JPG has a strong compression and quality loss, generally works well for web insertion. PNG, on the other hand, is lossless, meaning that the thing you render is the thing you get, no compression. The problem is that the files can upweight in the several magnitudes.
You made it bro, I was shocked after seeing the thumbnail that you finally made a videoike this and you must have seen the results for your video. Moat of the people like this type of videos.😊 That's great man.
Man.. You just nailed... Logos made by the other designers took more than an hour each for sure!!! You modified their design in 10 mins and yours are more eye-catching!!! I can feel the pain for those 5$ valued designers.
You gotta know that you are paying 5$ That id the amount for not buying that starbucks coffee for 1 lunch. You shouldnt expect what a proffesional designer does. I dont really know how much you pay a proffesional but Im guessing at least 100$ which is 50 times more
@@SatoriGraphics Hey Tom, as you know creating anything one line or commenting about anything online it is so easy to have miscommunication in 15 or 20 words. I guess I was a little shocked to find out that you can buy a logo for $5 online and my curiosity was simply should I feel compassion towards somebody working at such an insanely cheap rate and if so then how do I feel about the fact that they are undercutting and exploiting designers higher up the chain trying to scratch a living too? I know you didn't want to get into all this and I really didn't either - I was just simply asking a question where they lived for my own awareness. Your lesson plan was perfect in highlighting their work as what not to do for your own students so don't mistake my question and comment as criticism please!
Hi again! In how much price should a designer sell a logo? And can you please make a video on price setting techniques for all the graphic designing stuff like book covers, brochures, posters, business cards etc.?
There is no straight answer to that question. The price of a logo ALWAYS depends on a lot of factors. Who is the client, the size of the company, the value of its market, etc. You need to take all of these into consideration. I also take into account what the deadline is (if there is one) and how my schedule looks.
exactly. I always wonder how the hell (in the age of instant access to unlimited information) this colour theory bullshit is still pushed around as fact.
@@paulh2343 Well obviously not. But where it comes to Western marketing that culture is pretty much universally understood. Of course if you're marketing to Japan you'd be stupid to use white to mean life.
@@KaitouKaiju so culture in florida is the same as culture in california and texas and new york? Or England and Italy? You're using a very broad brush to paint a vast array of perspectives. This is why user testing exists. There are way too many psycholigical variables to state a colour "means" something. There are very few colours which have wide representative understanding but its non-emotive, simplistic and evolutionary (like greens for nature)... and even then, its more about colour tone/vibrancy and context than simply a hue.
Totally agree with what you said and the designs you came up with. I’m currently designing a vehicle graphic for the first time... good to know about the 5 file types... I saved those!
That's what you should do. If you used a font that is not in the client's PC, which is the case 99% of the time, illustrator will just look for the most similar font that the system has and use that one instead. This is not good.
I clicked on this video randomly but came away learning a lot! I liked that you did the 'scaling test' to prove your point on why the logos just wouldn't work. Well, as the saying goes, you get what you paid for lol
Totally agree, this saves crucial time for pro designers. logo at 5$ for other variation of your main which you combined and analyze the cheap ones to make yours, perfect!
Jpegs work better for eg photos, png work best for online logos and non photo like designs. Zero compression on png, smaller file size. But much bigger filesize if png format is used for photos, hence jpg
There is only two types of people that can be "happy" with $5: designers from very poor countries where money conversion gives them enough money to cover their work time on the logo or a person who does not even need to be a designer and uses logo generator for a quick result and $5 for 5min of "work" is a good deal for them.
Bloody hell I enjoyed this video. As an HCI Designer, logo design is an area i am looking to have an understanding of. Very well presented. Speed of speech 100% spot on. Thanks Satori dude
The detail in the second logo is clearly representing a cursor action but you are right it's too small. But that's about right for 1hrs thought and 1hrs design render. Aka $5. Your version is much more generic. I would certainly scroll over your logo. I would take the cursor click motif and enlarge it into a radiating circle from the B in web. Which would surround all the text.
For 5$ these logos are incredible. The price is just absurde. So they tried well .. are the logos good? Hell no, But even for 50$ the logo should not be the best ... Nice video man. :)
What a great idea. I’ve often wondered what you really get out sourcing graphic work like this. Same thing happens in my industry building websites. A lot of these low ballers simply cut corners to deliver extremely cheap services.
Hi... Thanks for all of your videos, it's really helpful. Make a video on how to write a contract with 1 or 2 example contracts. And explain in which format I should send the contract on online. And what is the process of the digital signature? Should I have to register myself legally as a graphic designer to write a contract? And after contract and work have done, if the client refuses to pay money where should I lodge the complaint?
This video was super helpful. Always wondered about fiver and what you get. This made me feel much better about my work!!! I really appreciate you taking the time to make your own changes to the design as well. Great move. Would you be interested in doing the same with user submissions? Could be a cool video
3rd world countries unprofessioal are doing it for money. Coz if they increased their price they don't get any offers from buyers. That's why they are frustrated and ruining market place. But some smart guys who are professionals used them to generate ideas. Actually Pro's higher them in 5$ and ask them to make a logo or trace a logo. After finishing that they got paid and happy. On the other hand Pro get an idea and have his work done. Pro sell it with modification and boom he got hundreds of dollars. 😉😉😉
@@naono9715 But most of the time they thought if they charge less people will buy their services. Biggest problem is that they can't even realize how things happen in the Developed countries. Cheap is not the solution, excellence what it takes to the next level. Professionalism can make differences.
Thanks Tom, another great video! It looked like the first designer used some sort of bevel filter on the logo - something I haven't seen since about 2003. That second logo is even worse. The sad thing is there are clients out there that would take these and actually use them feeling like they had received something of quality! We need to get this message out to more designers and clients.

Some of the benefits I noticed are that:
1) We get a good idea of what a $5 logo gets you (design itself and deliverables).
2) Your critique of each logo is fair and comes with insight that other designers can immediately apply to their work.
3) You actually show what a more seasoned or knowledgeable designer would come up with when you redesign each logo.
Thanks for the awesome vid!
Industry standard for $5 logo? No way! They definitely gave you a $5 worth of logo, so they meet the mark 👏😏
For the people who say how he expects a masterpiece or raw file for 5 dollars : He doesn't. He just tested this to see what happens.
Keep up the great work Satori, i watch your videos regularly! :)
@@SatoriGraphics Yeah, we got it man, no worries, thank you too, keep producing amazing content, i watch you daily! 😊👌👍🤜
The people doing these designs are people who can easily live on the $20 USD per day that they might pull in from doing such work over an 8-10 hour day. They are typically located in places like India and the Philippines and their graphic design educations (if any) pale in comparison to that of a western-educated designer.
8:44 "and again its not finished, its just me spending 10 minuets quickly working on things."
The fattest middle finger to another designer I have ever seen.
Dude...love your critic, especially how you edited the the first logo. I enjoyed watching this video, very informative. I am actually pissed at how those $5 logo designers boast about their professionalism and still can't do much . Some guys even beg you to give them the job, and they waste your time. Thanks for this video.
Fivver is an insult to the hardworking graphic designers like myself that have been in the business for over 20 years
I've been waiting for a video like that for some time, I loved it. I'm a graphic designer from Peru and here there are also many pseudo designers that offer works of that quality, practically pulling their prices to the floor. We need to better educate people about the importance of a good logo. A hug.
also in the second version the dotted line circle isn't properly aligned within the "b" letter, ugh )
oof. yeah... that hurts me... lol
It was $5.
And I thought there's something wrong with my vision. 😄
Great insights for both budding designers and clients seeking professionals. Loved it!
SVG is also great for web design logo use, purely because it scales and keeps its quality at all screen sizes.
He did say that he only spent 10 mins correcting the logos
Love you
I was thinking the same exact things. What can you expect from a person who's making you a logo for just 5 bucks. Tom comes off as way too condescending sometimes
Amem.
As I was wathing this video I had to pause it and say to myself "Damn, this dude is kind of a douche"
I mean, both logo, as not super professional as they were, at least they were original and you can see that the person at least tried to do something.
And he goes on, puts an W inside a square and goes out like "See how awesome I am?"
This guy pays 5 bucks and expect the logos to be the next Apple or Google logo
The first logo was probably from a software logo generator. The blue and orange compass circling the pointer had two shades to show depth. I doubt anyone would go through such lengths for $5.00 What I've noticed about the pro designers and the amateurs is that pro designer's images can attract your attention with relevant colors and a simplistic design to describe a business. The amateurs want you throw everything and the kitchen sink in your design with colors that clash most of the time.
really great tutorial, yeah I called it a tutorial, count me as your loyal subscriber ..carry on bro.recommended to all who are interested in the logo design industry
I recon super critical review of a logo that you only payed 5 dollars for.
Robbie Byron dude, he is HELPING out everybody here! I recon you criticizing him
Great video!, Thanks.
Is that not just basically the Microsoft word logo
2:50 it looks like the logo of ISRO(indian space research organization)
Yes
Definetly want to see more of these. Make it a series!
Thanks for this video. I'm a graphic designer for 10+ years and sometimes I could cry seeing all the useless, amateur cheap logos sent in JPG...
glad you enjoyed it Noémi, do enjoy your Monday
The problem is that the files can upweight in the several magnitudes.
i mean, *ofcourse* you’d think your logos are improvements😂
this is so helpful! love to see more video of you doing professional and detailed analysis on what is a good/bad design!
Thanks Tom for improving us. Big up
You made it bro, I was shocked after seeing the thumbnail that you finally made a videoike this and you must have seen the results for your video.

@@SatoriGraphics a clean one. You think im an animal?!!

I loved this one man, combines graphic design with a little bit of entertainment. Worth the 10 bucks you spent on this, lol.
Very critical but I like the honesty and it helps people learn! Thanks for the video
Man.. You just nailed... Logos made by the other designers took more than an hour each for sure!!! You modified their design in 10 mins and yours are more eye-catching!!! I can feel the pain for those 5$ valued designers.
I loved this type of video. It really is insightful and helps brought in my mind when it comes to creative design. Please do more of these.
I'm also a logo designer, and designing a good logo take some time, 5$ is just ridiculous if someone want something clean
You gotta know that you are paying 5$ That id the amount for not buying that starbucks coffee for 1 lunch. You shouldnt expect what a proffesional designer does. I dont really know how much you pay a proffesional but Im guessing at least 100$ which is 50 times more
Knowing where the designers lived geographically would be very helpful to understanding the big picture...

Hey Tom, as you know creating anything one line or commenting about anything online it is so easy to have miscommunication in 15 or 20 words.
Would you charge 200$ for a logo for a multimillion dollar company?
There is no straight answer to that question. The price of a logo ALWAYS depends on a lot of factors. Who is the client, the size of the company, the value of its market, etc. You need to take all of these into consideration. I also take into account what the deadline is (if there is one) and how my schedule looks.
The colour psychology stuff you keep bringing up isn't really grounded in reality.
exactly. I always wonder how the hell (in the age of instant access to unlimited information) this colour theory bullshit is still pushed around as fact.
It's grounded in culture. Culture is reality when it comes to behavior
@@KaitouKaiju and culture isnt universal. Hence why its bullshit.
I really like the humble ,authentic and professional way you speak in your videos !!!
Totally agree with what you said and the designs you came up with. I’m currently designing a vehicle graphic for the first time... good to know about the 5 file types... I saved those!
I suggest to add .SVG file in your list because it is a popular vector solution for web development.
You give native AI files? Do you outline type? I’ve always outlined any type and given an eps file.
I think that this is good way to start a logo design if you are suffering a creative block
Totally agree, this saves crucial time for pro designers. logo at 5$ for other variation of your main which you combined and analyze the cheap ones to make yours, perfect!
Question: Why should one send an opaque PNG if you’re already sending a JPG? Great video by the way, earned my subscription.
Png is better quality for web than jpg
Jpegs work better for eg photos, png work best for online logos and non photo like designs. Zero compression on png, smaller file size. But much bigger filesize if png format is used for photos, hence jpg
Also, one sends a CMYK jpg usually as well, whereas png is only RGB
I learned alot from this video. Your explaination is straight up to the point. Kindly do more on such content. Thank you.
There is only two types of people that can be "happy" with $5: designers from very poor countries where money conversion gives them enough money to cover their work time on the logo or a person who does not even need to be a designer and uses logo generator for a quick result and $5 for 5min of "work" is a good deal for them.
Another great video mate. Really interesting for me to watch as I'm on a Graphic design course.👍
Bloody hell I enjoyed this video. As an HCI Designer, logo design is an area i am looking to have an understanding of. Very well presented. Speed of speech 100% spot on. Thanks Satori dude
Fiver pisses me off,
Just a bunch of dudes in India charging everything for less than $20. I wouldnt bother
Worst thing, if u said 'unlimited revision', fiverr buyers would make u work like a bull... 🐂🐂
and pakistanis doing everything for 5$ with unlimited revisions.😂
The detail in the second logo is clearly representing a cursor action but you are right it's too small. But that's about right for 1hrs thought and 1hrs design render. Aka $5. Your version is much more generic. I would certainly scroll over your logo. I would take the cursor click motif and enlarge it into a radiating circle from the B in web. Which would surround all the text.
My thoughts exactly. Both his logos are okay but they are way too generic, the second one looks like Woolworths logo.
Do a video about this man!

I really appreciate you taking the time to make your own changes to the design as well. Great move. Would you be interested in doing the same with user submissions? Could be a cool video
What a shame... 5$ per logo... These people are destroying our jobs!
Obviously, there are new. When you don't have much confidence because you lack experience you tend to charge less.
@@naono9715 But most of the time they thought if they charge less people will buy their services. Biggest problem is that they can't even realize how things happen in the Developed countries. Cheap is not the solution, excellence what it takes to the next level. Professionalism can make differences.

One of your best videos man - this is so so helpful in understanding the client/freelance relationship
Logan Pinney aaah really? So I am happy I wasn’t enlightened with average one....
