      I've heard that word spanner I believe first in Star Wars though Han Solo asked for a hydro spanner so that may be some sci fi invention. Then later in the online game World of Warcraft. The inventive Goblins and Gnomes use Spanners. This is from the internet, and I can't say for certain how arcuate it is, and yet I don't think it clarified to me as to why they exactly called it that unless it's like for spin? I heard it can mean stretcher, roughly.
      'Spanner' came into use in the 1630s, referring to the tool for winding the spring of a wheel-lock firearm. From German Spanner (n.), from spannen

    There's lots of talk about how red grabs out attention because it incites thoughts of passion and/or violence, and is often used as a cancel button, or to signify something to avoid. But I think it's also important to remember that lots of fruits signal their ripeness by turning red. A leading theory for why primates evolved to see red when most mammals can't is that it helped us find edible fruits more easily.
    I thought of this when you used McDonald's as an example. Red is often appealing to us because red means ripe.

      the same goes with purple and yellow
      yellow is psychologically one of four primaries for us too

    Women see a different spectrum than men hence the colour choice. Red, black, and white together is very powerful and it was no accident that a certain political party, back in the 30's, chose this combination along with an angular symbol. If you study some of their visual propaganda you will notice they were masters of the game on many fronts.

    As a video editor trying to move more into motion graphics and graphic design, I found this extremely insightful! There are so many color theory vids out there that might list how colors make us feel, but don't explain how that feeling might affect someone's interpretation (or consumption) of the final work, let alone provide specific applications. Great stuff!

    0:30 Ug, seriously about the red room? I have red light bulbs for my kids because I read that was easier for them to fall asleep than blue light. But if it is elevating their heart rate, that's no good.

    • @SatoriGraphics
      @SatoriGraphics  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bluelight (commonly from computer screens) mimics sunlight which prevents melatonin production. Melatonin is essential for sleep. Red light however does not prevent the production of melatonin, and thus helps with sleep in this regard. Sorry for the visuals in the video, but by red room, I think the study related to the paint on the walls, not the light. There is a key difference. So I wouldn't go changing your bulbs yet, see how well your kids sleep and if they are sleeping just fine, no changes needed :)

    • @lydialutz
      @lydialutz ปีที่แล้ว

    It is worth noting that the is almost always a inherent physiological or cultural reason that we react to certain colours. Red indeed heightens our awareness as a direct response to the fight or flight mechanism. This is because red is the colour of blood. Picture this scenario, early man is out hunting and stumbles across a fresh killed beast, the sight causes several immediate responses - firstly hunger, and then a hyper alertness to their surroundings as they now have to be aware of what predator may have caused the carnage at their feet. So essentially the colour red makes us feel hungry and slightly uncomfortable. So where are these responses best used in a commercial setting? Fast food restaurants, where you will see many restaurants use the colour to evoke hunger while also making the customer’s heart rate to rise so they begin to feel uncomfortable and want to leave - and thus we have ‘fast’ food. Other sensory experiences are all brought into play to speed up these commercial encounters such as cold, laminated surfaces, audio tracks and of course lighting. As for red also signifying love, this too relates directly to blood, as aroused people experience an increase in blood flow as it is sent to certain parts of the body and can result in swollen reddish lips and flushed cheeks - physiological responses that gave birth to the make up industries.

    As a woman I'd avoid text on chest for the left cover and chin on text for the right one. Putting the text blocks higher on the left side of left color and both of them lower for right cover would have been on point. Are the bar codes standardised on that side in your country? If not, I'd probably have gone for placing them in her back rather than front. There's a subconscious notion that an object before a person looks more hindering than one in her back. Since the picture has a subtle sense of being mid-motion.
    That said: these were just some thoughts that jumped out of me in a nostalgic moment of going into designer mode, from my time in highschool (German school system). You did not ask for advice and this is just a quick example graphic. So please, by all means, take it with a grain of salt.
    It was a good educational video on the topic. I could not help and ask myself though, if us seeing things these ways doesn't have more to do with years of design choices building on initial experiences from living in nature. Aka if we'd change the rules for long enough, I wonder of our physioligical responses would change aswell. 🤔

      Interesting thought in the last part. I can imagine that the response can possibly change, but that would take a looooong time, maybe thousands of years. But the principles how we came to the way we react to colors are the same I guess, it's all serving the purpose to survive in this world. But since we fundamentally face different challenges nowadays, maybe it's already slowly in the process of changing. But as you said, we still base many design choices on our primal instincts routed in nature, so we are basicly just reinforcing these.

    Most of the studies are not suitable to take it as is. As you mentioned a cultural and biological differences, color emotions are vary from person to person depending on their cognitive background. Human brain picks up black and white colors first, then a red, but otherwise, color is a very subjective thing. Any theory won’t be fully applicable.

    I'm curious if there have been any modern follow-ups to those color studies or if they've been replicated elsewhere. I'm sure culture can have a major impact on color perception. For example blue and pink as the traditional boy and girl colors were completely swapped in the 19th century, and linguists have found that almost universally, when languages first develop, all colors are categorized as shades of black, white and red.

    • @DynastyUK
      @DynastyUK ปีที่แล้ว

      Researchers have found that different cultures and societies can have distinct associations and interpretations of colors. These associations can be influenced by a variety of factors, including historical, social, and environmental contexts.
      Regarding the specific example you mentioned, the association of blue with boys and pink with girls is a relatively recent phenomenon. Prior to the 20th century, these color associations were not as prevalent or standardized. Cultural shifts, marketing strategies, and changing societal norms have played a role in shaping these color preferences over time.
      In terms of linguistic categorization of colors, the Berlin and Kay theory is often referenced. This theory suggests that there is a universal pattern in the order in which colors are named and categorized across different languages. According to this theory, colors are categorized into basic terms in a specific sequence: first black and white, then red, followed by either green or yellow, and so on. However, it's worth noting that the extent to which this theory is applicable universally has been a subject of debate among linguists and researchers.
      As for modern follow-ups to color studies, there continues to be ongoing research on color perception, color psychology, and the impact of color on various aspects of design, marketing, and human behavior. Color theory remains a fundamental aspect of graphic design education and practice, and designers often explore the emotional and psychological effects of color in their work.

      @@DynastyUKit's only because of goal not core understanding of colours lol
      girls had blue to get calm boys to not be calm as desired culturally
      the natural perception was that boys are more rational and cold why girls are more irrational and hot in thinking
      chaos was always black and red
      while order was heavenly so blue and yellow
      we shouldn't consider revolutionary aberration as lack of historical agreement ever existing
      humanity gets progressively abnormal
      so truth stay in past aren't discovered so often or at least not more often than deformed without understanding

    There is one more thing, to this logo. Deep inside us we connect food with fire, and the big M are the flames and the red and yellow are the color of fire. A blue restaurant is perhaps less nice the a warm, braun, red and yellow, pub colors.

      that is interesting.. I think these days subscriptions are less important, and when a person subscribes they stop their viewing sequence from video to video, which ends their watch session. They want people to stay in viewing sessions as long as possible
