+billy Siravo jr Anakin kept it to himself until he talked to Mace Windu, telling him he knows Palpatine is the Sith. Windu asked if he was sure, and Anakin said he knows Sith Legends and other things so yeah...
+billy Siravo jr The whole plot of this movie and scene specifically was for Anakin to spy on Palpatine. The Jedi order knew someone close to Palpatine or perhaps himself was the sith they were looking for and he confirmed it to Anakin when he was told this story; unfortunately Anakin was seduced and killed Mace Windu.
I mean, you ever see the way Sith "train"? In Clone Wars, it shows Dooku literally using Force Lightning on his apprentice to "train" him. Probably a LOT of pent up anger there.
I love the sheer relish with which he says “It’s ironic”, said more to himself than Anakin, as though he’s looking back and thinking “Plagueis, you old fool.”
You can just tell Palpatine is re-living the experience of murdering Plaguies in his sleep and it's bringing back some fond memories. Sort of like when you reminisce with a friend about the 'good old days'. Palpatine's good old days were killing his master and taking over his power and Ian acts it like he's thinking back to the big game they won back in high school. Incredible.
@@friendlysperg1372 the only reason why people think prequel acting is bad is because George Lucas didn't want it to feel "natural" as he had explicit instructions to act in a 1930's theatrical style.

What I love about Palpatine's manipulation here was the fact that he doesn't straight up sell the idea of the dark side to Anakin, if anything he's almost discouraging it. "The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural" is basically him telling Anakin "yeah the dark side gives pretty dope abilities, but at a disturbing cost". In addition, he goes on to explain Darth Plagueis's downfall and how even his own powers couldn't save him, to tell Anakin that the dark side, or at the very least anyone who uses it, isn't all powerful. By doing this, not only does he deflect suspicion from himself, he tempts Anakin with this information, by taking advantage of the mind's natural tendency to want what it can't have, causing Anakin to brood about it more and more than he probably would've if he thought there were no consequences.
He also knows that Anakin is arrogant and believes (not without reason) that he already has the power to protect himself from any dangers. He knows that the disclaimer won’t stop Anakin from considering the option, and might even goad him into it by attacking his pride.
I don't think he tried to hint that the dark side has a disturbing cost, but rather wanted to say it's really powerful and the Jedi don't understand it. Also as Anakin is taught to avoid the dark side at all costs and its users are practically highest level criminals, Palpatine has to be subtle about it.
Me but the title should be : The Tragedy of The Wise : A Sith Legend I think the movie should be based on the Darth Plagueis novel . It should be a really dark and disturbing film . Also I have an idea for the ending : After we see Palpatine killing off Plagueis, he cut to events righf after the ending of Revenge of the Sith, Palpatine sends Vader into his first mission to hunt down the remaining Jedi, Emperor Palpatine goes to sleep . Then we enter Palpatine's dream : Palpatine is in his teenager years in his dream, on Naboo . He meets Chancellor Vellorum, Maul and Padme but they're still children, he doesn't understand what's going on . Then he hears a voice from a house, he enters the house . As he entered the house he suddenly was in his Senator age, there he meets Anakin who has his Revenge of the Sith outfit who turns to him, and says : "Have you ever heard the Tragedy of Darth Sidious the Mortal ?" As Anakin says this his voice gets distorted and Anakin's flesh gets rotted and the he turns into a pile of rotten flesh . Palpatine in the first time in his life looks horrified and hears voices, Palpatine, terrified, runs away . As Palpatine runs the screen gets distorted, while we hear demonic and ghostly screams and we see flashes of signs though, signs which human language can't translate like a secret writing , and Palpatine falls over on the beheaded corpse of Dooku with Dooku's head watching him, asking : Why have you did this to me ? Palpatine looks even more terrified . He finds himself running in the lower levels of Corusant, and he hears distorted voices, he sees zombified versions of the people who died by the hands of his manipulations and the zombies of his parents and sisters who he killed personally . He tries to escape the zombies, but the zombies seem to be faster, when he gets catched by the zombie of Windu he gets pulled into the horde and we hear Palpatine's painful and dying screams . Then Palpatine suddenly wakes up, but this time in his Supreme Chancellor age . He finds himself in a cave, with lava rivers, he sees a platform far away from him, where he sees a Dark hooded figure . He approaches this dark figure . He asks : "Who are you ?" . The figure slowly turns to Palpatine, as he turns, the screen gets distorted with little flashes of many death scenes seen in the prequels but the ones who died this time were not the people who actually died, but rather Palpatine . When the figure finally turns to Palpatine, it is revealed that it's Plagueis and Plagueis says : "How did you say that ? He could save others from death , but not himself ? " and Plagueis lunges at Palpatine with a demonic scream and Palpatine wakes up . Then he returns to sleep, as we hear an ignited lightsabre, and when Palpatine wakes up, Darth Vader kills him . Then Palpatine finally and this time really, wakes up, screaming . An Imperial Guard quickly comes in, he asks : " Is everything alright my Lord ?" Palpatine replies : "I'm sensing a powerful and dark Force which could've caused this nightmare from the outer rims, tell Tarkin to send Scientific Bases of Operations into the Outer Rims, at once !" The Guard nodded and left the room Palpatine looks out to Corusant . Then he cut to an acient temple . Were we see 2 yellow glowing eyes, and we hear a dark, mysterious voice saying : "Ironic ."
@@WhyTho525 The joke was that you'd written a huge explanation of what Darth Plagueis the Wise: A Star Wars Story should be, which seemed to be nonsensical and written while tired or on some sort of drug, so I removed the explanation of how I arrived at this conclusion, and instead asked how much, creating humour. Furthermore, Lego Yoda takes ketamine and runs over minorities in his 2001 Honda Civic, and viewing this TH-cam video makes users more likely to understand this reference, creating additional humour.

Ironic... he could see the corruption in others, but not in himself..." "Is it possible to learn this power?" "Not from a Sith..."
It's even funnier with the context of the Darth Plagueis novel where James Luceno establishes that Palpatine and Plagueis watched the same opera sequence as the one in the background of this scene before the actual "Tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise" part of the novel so Palpatine might as well have just said "This is what I was doing on the night of..."
I think he's smiling because Anakin is showing his interest in the story by asking questions about it displaying how he is engaged in the story. Palpatine realizes that his story is working making it easier to lure Anakin to the dark side
@@kuldeepdas799 it's a Sith legend, Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midi-chlorians to create life.
"It's ironic, he could save others from death...but not himself." Hands down the best moment, he is gloating about killing Plagueis in front of somebody who can't yet know who he truly is.
What's so incredible in this scene is that Ian McDiarmid (Palpatine) tells three stories in one. His words tell the physical story, his tone tells the thematic story (a hidden legend, accumulation of power, possession of power, fear to lose it, downfall) but it's his face that portrays the emotional story. The half-hidden smirk at the word "Ironic" is beautiful acting. Every look at Anakin is punctuation to his words, emphasis to his tone. Masterfully done.
I keep coming back to this one. To me, it is possibly the greatest short sequence of acting (on the part of McDiarmid particularly), in terms of depth, ambition, and as you seem to agree, layering of story, that I can even imagine existing. It almost makes me stop searching for anything of its caliber, but then I realize I'm just as seduced as Anakin is here--which effect reinforces my perception of greatness in the acting as if to compensate for my own narcissism. In watching the scene, I find that the layers of meaning seem to themselves break the 3rd or 4th wall, somehow inviting the viewer in to the experience, which in my mind conjures up what I think being bitten by a black mamba would be like--their venom is locally not painful--I imagine more like a mosquito bite--if the mosquito was snakehead sized--with a kind of tingling being the primary symptom until the spreading neurotoxin simply shuts you down. Likewise, McDiarmid's poison wafts gently in the air, waiting patiently till Anakin's sensibilities have been arrested, convicted, and beheaded by a false judge, jury and executioner.
Palpatine: Did you ever hear the Tragedy of Darth Plagueise the Wise? Anakin: Yes Palpatine:....oh Anakin:...yep Palpatine:....so you wanna kill the jedi and rule the galaxy? Anakin: sounds good
Palpatine : Have you ever heard the Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise ? Anakin : No, but I've read the book . His apprentice looks just like you . Palpatine :............ Alternative 2 : Palpatine : Have you ever heard the Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise ? Darth Plagueis : Yes you treatrous, manipulative asshole ! Palpatine : Well shit
Say what you want about the prequels, but Ian McDiarmid gave a world class performance in reprising his role. You can tell he has so much joy in playing his character. Hate the Emperor all you want, but he definitely is always having the most fun in his role.
He does sell it just subtly. He knows Anakin is afraid to lose Padme (something he has been receiving visions of) so he would be quite receptive at the possibility of saving her. The last line seals the deal because is essentially saying " either you learn it from me or not, because the Jedis won't teach it to you and will prohibit you from learning." (Wich was true).
Except the only reason he's telling Anakin this story IS to sell the dark side. He names it explicitly even. LOL. You should be arguing that he does it in a somewhat subtle and manipulative way, but that's sales 101. Convince your client that the thing you're selling is not only their idea but that they should be grateful they even had the opportunity to buy it at the price you yourself set.
its even better in the full scene. After Anakin rebukes his initial attempts to use his frustrations with the Jedi Council's apathetic elitism to make him turn, still maintaining that "the Jedi are selfless, they care only for others", Sidious changed gears and begins telling Anakin about Plagueis, preying on his fear of losing Padme. Fear turns to anger, anger turns to hate.
Is Darth Plagueis The Wise Jesus? He was so powerful he could raise people from dead (Lazarus). And he was betrayed by his apostle (Judas). And on the cross, one of the thieves was mocking him "He saved others, himself he cannot save". Tragedy of Darth Plagueis is the story of Jesus. And Anakin is also Jesus with Immaculate conception, being child with powers, but then he turned against his own people, which is the opposite of what happen with Jesus. And Obi-Wan is also Jesus, because he looks like him

Well it wasn't really Disney's fault as much as it is the directors fault for not having a fucking road map and just doing whatever the hell they want.
Interesting, I always saw this scene as a rare example of "tell, don't show" being done to great effect. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that this scene is one of the greatest expositional scenes I've ever seen, perhaps even one of the best in modern cinema. Sidious says so much to Anakin in this scene - he explains how the Sith 'Rule of Two' works, he gives him an insight into how the Sith operate, but he also indicates how the Sith are not limited by dogma as much as the Jedi are, and that they are free to explore and experiment with the Force in ways that would terrify the Jedi. He's feeding all of Anakin's negative emotions - fear, envy, hate, anger - all while appearing as simply a pragmatic politician who is interested in galactic history. Masterful.
1:09 "He became so powerful, the only thing he was afraid of, was losing his power - which eventually, of course, he did." I love that line, Sidious doesn't realize that it is his destiny too.
The whole point of the Rule of Two is to teach the apprentice everything you know, then ultimately be challenged by said apprentice. At least, until the Sith are strong enough to wipe out the Jedi. From that point of view, you could argue that Palpatine fulfilled Bane's vision. What he did from there was up to him, I guess.
@@Ncholasbloom Ben did what his grandfather could not. That is starring in a bad movie. His grandfather had the opportunity to destroy the sith and he did. Then J.J. Abrams f@(#ed up a good movie by bringing back Palpatine. Instead, J.J. Abrams should have redone episode 8 and release the movie in December 2018. Title the movie, "The Lost Jedi." and it could be totally different. The knights of Ren could be in the movie. Han Solo is found alive by Rey, Finn, and Chewbacca. @@mariabatti7356 Just remembers that Star Wars 7 begins with Kylo Ren attacking a village, and one of his first stances is "Kill them all" (the villagers). Showing him happy after that would be "a bit" problematic. For a happy ending, things should have been different from the start.
Darth bane worked very hard to keep the existence of the sith a secret after he killed all the others. I'm not sure how his apprentices did in staying in hiding but a direct line of apprentices go down to palpatine. Bane's idea was each apprentice would be more powerful than the last and stay in hiding until the sith were ready to conquer the republic. And palpatine was ready so he put together a plan and executed it very well
Ian McDiarmid absolutely killed this scene. One of the most important scenes in all of Star Wars. This is when Anakin really questioned the Jedi way and wondered if he was on the wrong side. This scene was incredible
I think what really sold it was “not from a Jedi.” That no matter how much you train and learn, this is something inaccessible or cannot be provided by them. The one thing you have come to truly want out of all this.
I love the way that Sheev is clearly struggling to contain his laughter during this scene. Without needing to be told anything directly, we know that Palpatine is the apprentice of this story.
I never thought about it like that, I always interpreted palp’s cackle as him beginning to psychologically unravel, the Jedi are being wiped out by his new apprentice and the new would-be Emperor looks like a gramma with pizza the hut’s skin complexion; he has no desire nor need anymore to play politics he’s completely gone all “THE WORLD IS MINE!” Shtick but on a galactic scale.
*Palpatine:* Not from a Jedi. *Anakin:* Aight well you're totally a sith lord, and I've been recording this whole conversation on my phone, I'mma just take this to the jedi council, k see yaaaaaa *Palpatine:* No, no, noo-
This scene is a meme, but imo one of the best scenes in cinematic history. In just 2 minutes you learn Palpatine's backstory, his motivations, emotional state and pride, and his intentions of pulling Anakin using power...and it worked. Hook, line, and sinker, and you can tell Palpatine knows it at the end of that conversation. All without ever actually referring to himself or any sort of exposition dump. Perfect directing, writing, and acting.
@Salmon Give me a break. Those are all that matter to make a scene great? Shots, editing, and... lighting? What about Charlie Chaplin's speech in The Great Dictator? Zero of those things are exceptional but it's still one of the best scenes in cinematic history. If you play games, I imagine you'd be a "only graphics matter" person.

1:31 as a kid, I can 100% say this moment lit a switch in my brain that he was the villain. Amazing actor. Looking back I now realise how naive Anakin was to not pickup on any of this.
Most cheesy, childish shit I've ever seen. Rise of Skywalker seriously lowered the quality there. That's cos it used the same writer who gave you "Save Martha", "why did you say that name?!" Scene. No wonder the sequels went downhill with imagination like that.
Of all the casting decisions George Lucas made for Star Wars, Ian McDiarmid as Palpatine might just be the best one. This scene is an acting masterpiece on his part
I always thought the reason Luke did turn to the dark side is because was told before he faced Vader & the emperor that the woman he was digging was his own sister. That kind a threw Luke. This made his attachments more tenuous. Han went from a romantic rival to the dude who wants to bang his sister and has a walking shag rug for a companion.
@@pkmntrainerred4247 The scene depicted Anakin getting baited to the Dark side because of his strong attachment to Padme and sought the Dark Side for a means to save her. Luke in effect understood that they are his friends but that there is a larger framework in place than what's personal to him. His learning that Vader is his father and that Leia is his sister made him understand that strong attachments can be used to lure someone to the dark side.

@@liamniemann7236 Exactly. He was the thing in the prequels I always looked forward to and as soon as I heard he was going to be in The Rise of Skywalker I was afraid they were just going to have him sit around and do nothing but talk and shoot lightning. 1:32 the way he plays into Anakin's instabilities telling him exactly what he wants to hear while also congratulating himself still gives chills to this day
Something I just realized for the first time when waching this... Between 01:32 to 01:40, the moment he looks away from Anakin and instead looking into his own memories... this is the only part of the entire movie series where Palpatine is being sincere and not playing a part. Think about it; whenever Palpatine is talking to someone else he has an air of insincerity about him. When he's still pretending to be a good person during the prequels, you can tell that everything he says and how he says it is carefully planned out and acted, as if he was playing a part. And once he becomes "The Emperor" he starts acting in an extremely theatrical and condescending way, as if he is mocking whoever he talks to. Even when he talks to Vader in the original trilogy, he talks in this phony "pretending we are friends" sort of way, like a true sociopath who never reveals his actual feelings. Even in the scene in the video, for the MOST part he is still acting out a role when talking to Anakin. Obviously, he planned well ahead to make this speech. And whenever he is looking straight at Anakin, he is as phony in his facial expressions as always. He is playing his part. BUT, for those few moments when he looks away from Anakin and tells him about how he murdered his master... he is being genuine. You can see it in his eyes. He is still telling the story, but for a moment he is not focusing on Anakin or judging Anakins reactions. Instead he is genuinly reminiscing about an important event in his past. This is the only part in the saga where Palpatine is not observing his current surroundings or the people there, but instead for a brief moment he is only observing his own mind. Then he immediately goes back playing his part. Chilling.
Such a Great analysis, I love how killing his master is the one part of his memories of Plaguies that he relishes recalling, to the point Where he is almost lost in the moment and has to control his smile (ISTG Palpatine's little smile on that part is *priceless* ) to avoid making Anakin suspicious.

Yea wow
The dark side truly is the pyramid scheme from hell
I don't think he tried to hint that the dark side has a disturbing cost, but rather wanted to say it's really powerful and the Jedi don't understand it. Also as Anakin is taught to avoid the dark side at all costs and its users are practically highest level criminals, Palpatine has to be subtle about it.

Who would want to watch "The Tragedy of Darth Plaegious the Wise. A Star Wars Story"?
Me but the title should be :
The Tragedy of The Wise : A Sith Legend
I think the movie should be based on the Darth Plagueis novel . Then we enter Palpatine's dream :
Palpatine is in his teenager years in his dream, on Naboo .

I love how, when Anakin asks what happened to Darth Plagueis, Palpatine smiles, clearly relishing the memory of himself killing his master.
“Good times.”

Ian McDiarmid is truly a wonder...
You can kind of tell that he was the one who killed him, with him clearly holding back amusement at the memory of his death.
Likewise, McDiarmid's poison wafts gently in the air, waiting patiently till Anakin's sensibilities have been arrested, convicted, and beheaded by a false judge, jury and executioner.
i see you have a a doctorate in Darth Plageius the Wise Studies
Still can't believe he didn't tell Anakin Plagus really wasn't that powerful and learned everything from lesbian space witches while hiding in a cave.

This was brilliant. He doesn't try to sell the Dark Side. He wants Anakin to deliberately go there on his own.
@@MundaneThingsBackwardsI was gonna say THIS is how you sell someone "this pen" and you beat me to it
its even better in the full scene.

Masterful.

This scene is a meme, but imo one of the best scenes in cinematic history. In just 2 minutes you learn Palpatine's backstory, his motivations, emotional state and pride, and his intentions of pulling Anakin using power...and it worked.

- Did you ever hear The Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise?
- No.
- I thought not. It's not a story your mother would tell you.
- What is it about?
- It’s a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life… He had such a knowledge of the dark side, he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying.
- Is it even real?
- The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural... He became so powerful… the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from death, but not himself.
Then I had to explain to my young apprentice some star wars nomenclature. Well, it wasn't the best idea to mention "killing in his sleep" in that circumstances, but pasta is pasta.
A week later I met his parents who were angry at me, because they foud out I told him about killing and other dark edgy stuff. That I shouldn't say such things to a child. I was quite embarrassed, but I said that it is them who are mistaken about a great many things about raising a child.
