I remember updating an old huawei u8180 phone from Android 2.1 to Android 4.0, rooting it, installing clockworkmod, flashing the ROM (RIP CyanogenMod), bricking it once, trying again and eventually booting succesfully, it made me so happy, it's what ignited my love for reparining/refurbishing old devices, sadly most apps today detect when you're using a custom ROM or a rooted device and block their access to them, making this process kind of useless today.
The people that uploaded custom ROMs to forums will always have my respect, I remember how unstable some ROMs were and how they updated them until they were stable and ready for everyday use.
It really was a special time.

Back when I was using Anrdoid 4.3 and 5.0 I rooted every device I had, because it was needed to uninstall preloaded apps and change hosts file to block ads system-wide. Rooting android 4.3 was simply - one-click root by TowelRoot, android 5.0 needed kingroot or kingoroot but was also doable without PC. Then I switched to Samsung S8 with android 9 and I didnt need root anymore, because ads are blocked used system setting - private dns and there is much more memory and Samsung also still allows to install and move apps to micro sd card without reformatting it to use only with one phone. But I was shocked when I saw in my brothers' Samsung S22 Ultra with Android 13 that you cant enter android/data dir through file manager on phone and it says that you need pc to browse android/data. What will be next? You wont be able to personalize or install apps outside of play store on your OWN phone? Android was getting really better until version 9, then it started getting worse again update by update
