idk if it's a fun fact but TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project) is the 1st custom recovery to involve touch controls. Which is far better instead of mapping navigation to hardware buttons.

Until it isn’t, if you have an obscure device chances are you will be porting twrp and in most cases touch doesn’t work. Than you gotta pray otg will work while having volume buttons that do nothing

Clorkworkmod recovery is truly iconic. The first ever recovery to modify system with whatever you like. Too bad it died shortly after TWRP appeared. But TWRP is still the best

CWM: first heavily modified AOSP recovery
TWRP: first fully touch UI
After that it's quite hard to do something really powerful until some UI upgrades are done (e.g. gestures, smooth animations & better UX)

you can also have a custom TWRP phone (converting a regular one to a TWRP phone will wipe all of your data.)

I have never used any Android recovery though I updated my phone with ZIP two times.
First one : OPPO A57 = Android 6 to 6. It just appeared in the File Manager. No need to open TWRP.
Second one : Redmi 9 Prime = Android 11 to 12. I did it from Settings. Choose update package.

One thing I forgot to mention. Singe these are Chinese brands, their official ZIP are available in their website, with variations.
Redmi 9 Prime was my secondary phone.
