Harvesting Heart of Palm (cutting a fallen chonta)

In this video we cut a spiky chonta palm to get the delicious heart of palm from the center of the trunk right below where the leaves come out. We use a chainsaw and a machete. Peter and Boris chop and hack their way into the center of the tree to find the heart of palm which has a texture kind of like string cheese, and a very delicious flavor. You'll often find this canned in "civilized" countries, but raw in the jungle it's way better. In Ecuador they call this "palmito."

Hey thanks! You guys might like to try the electro chainsaw like we use, my husband swears by his rechargeable, it goes real well for 1/2-1 hr! He says he would get a Stihl for his next one.
