    These two series are some of the best rebuild series ive seen on both the SM465 and the NP205.. very much thanks!

    These videos are awesome. I found out that a Dana 44 front wheel bearing locknut socket works for the shaft retaining nut! They call it the small 4 prong one.

      I should have a GM book on the 420. If you go to my @GebBuilt Facebook page you can comment and I will try to post pics of that rebuild from my book! I’m not on fb often but I will keep my eyes open for you. The only problem I see with my info is figuring out the other name for your SM420. Chevy calls the SM465 the “117mm transmission” in my books. Hopefully we can figure it out.

    I've rebuilt this transmisson before, but between my fuck ups and a few of yours, I think I'm getting a really professional rebuild this time. I do have a tip for you though. The lock nut for the back of the main shaft with the 4 notches in it. If you have a dana 44 or a GM 10 bolt front axle, the socket to remove the bearing nut that holds the bearing in those hubs will work on the transmisson as well. I can't remember really, but I might have had to use a file on the socket a little bit when I used it on the transmisson because I bought the socket to change the u-joints on my front axle yokes.

    Just a " correction " from a tool and die guy . *** Never drive a ball bearing in by the center !!!!!! You want to drive it in by the biggest outside race !!!! If it's a press fit on the center bore to you would want to drive them in on both surfaces at the same exact time / contacting both races with a driver ! Heating the bearing and cooling the shaft with dry ice prior helps alot to . If neither is practical , motor oil , wd, anything helps to help get and keep em moving . Just trying to help , but hiting the inside race can easily distort the bearing leading to noise and premature wear and possible failure .

      I really appreciate that and I did get it sold to a good guy the other day. The money from it has put my family in a much better financial state Which is something I ignored while building the truck. I was choosing the truck over family and it was doing damage to all of our hearts. My future dream is to make performance and fabrication my full time career (instead of trying to squeeze it in every night and weekend) then fire this TH-cam channel up to full speed. Very nice work brother, I know I'll be coming back to your videos again and again.
    We've got three rigs with the Muncie 465 and all I can say is they seem to be virtually indestructible - Love that box!
    Here is a piece of info I just picked up that you may find interesting - A front mounted overdrive box that jumped in between the engine and the 465
    *****" It's a "Double Torque 2XT" , and was made by Power Torque Industries, Inc. Company, in Arlington, Texas..
    It was made to bolt onto this SM465 G.M. four speed truck transmission that we are using..
    We understand this company sold out to "Advanced Adaptors" and they continued building this same unit with very little changes.. They are now called the "Ranger Torque Splitter". .
    They no longer have the Eaton electric solenoid though, as the earlier units did, and have gone to strictly manual shift.. Although we have the electric solenoid, we decided to manual shift ours also.. "*****
    I dont know a thing about them but it looked cool in the video I watched.
    Keep'em Rolling!

    Good job, looks great. I did exactly what you did about to the T. If you ever get an itch to run a Braden pto winch off that side cover on your tranny, Ive got the complete set-up. gearbox for tranny, just hangs off bolted cover area, control cable that actuates it, wich with 3/16 cable rated at 10,000lbs.(they say these older winches can pull down a house) and a nice roller fairlead to cut through your front bumper and mount to. Oh and both driveshaft u-joints have been well greased and are tight as new. It came on a 1 ton 1970 Chevy 4x4 from Boring, Oregon. Very, very rare!!! By the way I am in Waukon Ia. Jim. (P.S.,not to be bossy but I really believe in running Royal Purple 90w-140w gear oil. in that 465). I even ran Royal Purple in my tractors and implement gear boxes the last years I dairy farmed.

    hows' everyone's main input bearing large outer snap ring thickness effect the proper flush fit of the retainer? mine will only go flush if i remove the outer clipring. same deal with the rear main and the 4x4 adapter. its like i could just have the two machined out to fit the bearings and their clips just a litte to fit. everything fits perfect and works. just cant get past thinking there must be thinner clips? or let the bearings "float"?
    mine look the same thickness as in this video btw

    • @GebBuilt
      @GebBuilt  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well usually those are just a typical gasket made of either cork or the other stuff gaskets are made of - place it on, install top cover, ensure gasket stayed in place, if not, line it up - torque top cover down. I think I've posted top cover removal/installation instructions straight from the GM manual on my Geb Built Facebook page. If you go there and it's not posted, just send me a FB message and I'll try to help you out there. BEWARE there is a proper way to remove the cover that will save you a headache!

      @@Mwellmac You could use a thin layer of the sealant of your choice. If I use anything for stuff like that it would be Permatex Aviation Form-A-Gasket. Put it HALF WAY into reverse. Put the shifter in the slot and only drag it half way back not the whole way.

    How different is a sm 420 build? I have a 63

      kevin schettler good question, I think they are similar, but not sure if the rebuild would be the same or not. I would check with Novak Conversions.

    You mentioned the socket to torque the rear mainshaft lock nut, after looking for the factory socket I was floored by the $250+ price of the bosch tool. Did you end up making one or find another solution? Thanks

    • @GebBuilt
      @GebBuilt  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually found a spanner socket in my tool box that was close enough to do what I needed it to do. Got lucky!

    What kind of oil is recommended for the sm465

      +joshua cravens good question! Gl5 is what I've always used and my rebuild kit instructions recommend it too. If it is bad for the synchros then I've never experienced it nor have I heard of it. I won't say whether your info is correct or not, I will just say what has worked for me. Thank you for commenting and God bless!!

      Thank you for the kind words and thank you for asking! To make a long story short, the truck became an obsession and the obsession was contributing to the neglect of my wife and children. I finally realized what is most important in my life!! I hope to someday start building and videoing again but only if I can manage it as a family venture! I am so grateful for your support of my channel and I will keep all of these videos up and continue to answer comments and questions! God Bless You!!

      Hi Geb, great videos. I have been using them to rebuild both my transfer case and tranny. I know you were taking some time off to refocus on you family 👍. I wasn't sure if you had ever done the video of the top cover. If not it's all good. Take care.

      @@GebBuilt Did you put anything on the bolts like loctite we've changed mine and it's seeping around the bolts and I have a seeo around the counter shaft cover gasket more of a significant leak but im going to re do it all.

    • @GebBuilt
      @GebBuilt  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dr Johnson Hungwell yes any time the bolt holes go all the way through the case you should clean the holes and bolts and use good thread sealer like loc tire brand. Great question. I hope this helps

      @@GebBuilt I bought the loctite blue that is oil resistant , the motiv gear PTO gaskets and the pernatex grey rtv that is for gear oil so maybe it won't leak now .
